Leaving friends and family can be one of the hardest parts about an international move. Agreeing on a plan for keeping in touch may help you and your loved ones. Your plan could include phone calls or e-mails. This may be a good time to help a friend or relative get used to using e-mail if they don’t know how to do so already. If possible, make plans for friends and family to come visit you or for you to visit home. Your company may pay for occasional trips home. Here are some ideas for staying in touch:
• Ask a friend or relative to record your favourite television show and send you tapes.
• E-mail pictures of your home and neighbourhood or set up a Web site.
• Exchange newspaper articles and other bits of news and information.
• Establish a weekly or monthly phone call.
You may also want to discuss how unexpected events will be handled. Who is available to manage any family emergencies that come up? Discuss in advance the best way for someone to contact you if this occurs in your family.
