Mery was born and raised in The Netherlands and educated in both The Netherlands and the United States. After teaching in The Netherlands and Tanzania for several years, she moved to the United States, where she earned an M.S. in Physics in 1997. Since then she has taught physical science and mathematics at several secondary schools in the U.S. and at the University of Colorado. Mery is currently working as freelance website designer and translator.

In 2003, Mery co-founded the first Dutch school for language and culture in Colorado (De Petteflet.) Students, ages 4 - 8, meet one afternoon per week to learn the Dutch language and its culture. Mery served on the school board for three years and is currently working as classroom assistant in the classroom of her two sons.
