Dandong port is located at the northern part of the Liaodong peninsula. Backed by the northeastern areas of China and facing the Yellow Sea on the south, it oversees the Korean peninsula across the Yalu River on the east. It is the international port that has the closest distance to the Far East areas of Russian and the islands of Japan. Dandong port is located in the central area of the Northeastern Asian economic community and is an important component in the Bohai Sea economic ring. As one of the members of the group of ports on the coastal area of the Liaoning Province, Dandong port carries the mission of a hub port in the social and economic development and the comprehensive transportation system in the east area of northeastern China.
From the point of view of the status of Liaoning Province’s opening to the world, Dandong port is the only port on the east coast among the group of coastal ports of Liaoning. Although the current construction scale and handling capacity of Dandong is lower than those for Dalian and Yingkou ports, its strategic position and role are not replaceable by any other port. Dandong port is the closest to the west coastal port cities of the Korean peninsula in terms of distance. The location and economical role of Dandong port is unique among the Liaoning ports not only from the point of view of people and geographic advantages but also from the point of view of mutual economical complement. Analyzing by economical hinterland, the direct hinterland of Dandong port is Dandong City and its surrounding areas. The deep sub-hinterland is the east areas of the three northeastern provinces of China. The economical hinterland has no overlap with other ports. As the only important entrance to the sea in the east part of the northeast at present, the port not only greatly shortens the distance between these areas and the sea for the import and export of goods, but also links the group of cities in the east of northeastern China to form a “big dragon”, which reaches the economical zone of the Yellow Sea and Bohai Sea, and further extends to the southeastern coast of China, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Southeast Asian areas. That is very beneficial to promote the local economical development. So it is of great significance to build up Dandong port in order to serve the local economical development in the east of northeastern China and to make Dandong port the key link that connects the northeast Asia, especially the Korean peninsular, to the inland areas of our country for economic exchanges. In their strategy to revive the old industrial bases of northeastern China, the Central Committee of the Chinese Communist Party and the State Council has made the decision “to join up the railway system that runs through the east of northeastern China and to form a new corridor towards the sea for northeastern”. This will provide a precious opportunity for the development of Dandong port.
