Features of the asynchronous motors
The three-phase asynchronous motors do not require particular maintenance, since they are not subject to problems of wear due to the absence of brushes and manifold.
The stator is on the internal perimeter, and housed in special slots on the ferromagnetic core are triads of windings arranged in an equidistant manner, on which the power supply is applied.
The rotor is a ”squirrel cage” rotor with a system of windings composed of conducting bars axial to the rotor, housed in slots along the entire external perimeter of the ferromagnetic core, in a circular form, composed of a sheet pack stacked axially to the axis and separated by thin layers of insulating paint (see drawing to the side).
The ends of the bars that emerge from both faces of the rotor are short circuited and mechanically fastened with two conducting rings.
With the motor axis fixed, an extremely compact and robust rotor is obtained.
When the stator windings are powered with a balanced system of three-phase voltages, a magnetic field is generated that induces currents in the rotor conductors that produce a reaction field.
As long as the relative velocity between the inductive field and the rotor is non-zero, the moving field cuts through the lines of current flowing in the bars, and thus a torque is generated on the rotor, causing it to move.
But its speed can never reach that of the rotating magnetic field, since this would eliminate the relative motion between the rotating magnetic field and the induced system, and thus the current would no longer be induced which gives rise to the motion.
The rotation speed of the inductive magnetic field is also called the synchronism speed.
The following figure shows the mechanical characteristics obtained with constant voltage and increasing frequency.
The motor works with "constant power available", while the useful torque decreases as the speed increases.

The curves show how the motor is able to start by itself by providing a certain starting torque; the torque increases with the rotation speed up to a maximum value near the synchronism speed where it reduces rapidly to zero (because when the rotor rotates at the same speed as the rotating magnetic field, their relative velocity becomes zero as does the induced electromotive force and induced currents).
With the increase of the relative velocity between rotor and magnetic field, the induced electromotive force increases both in amplitude as well as frequency.
Electrically the rotor windings are equipped with a given impedance that increases with the increase of the frequency and thus decreases the amplitude of the induced currents and the phase; for this reason, the torque is reduced.
Changing the power supply frequency appropriately varies the synchronism speed and maximum torque, thus it is easy to change the stable working speed.
During the starting phase, using a low frequency allows to obtain a smaller relative velocity, thus the rotor impedance decreases and the currents have larger amplitudes and phases, thereby obtaining a larger torque.
The following figure shows the mechanical characteristics obtained with a variation of frequency proportional to the voltage, in the operating range with constant torque available.

Les moteurs triphasés asynchrones ne nécessitent pas d'entretien particulier car ils ne sont pas sujets à des problèmes d'usure grâce à l'absence de balais et de collecteur.
Le stator se situe sur le périmètre interne. Dans des encoches spéciales, sur le noyau ferromagnétique, sont logées des triades d'enroulements, disposées de façon équidistante, auxquelles l'alimentation est appliquée.
Le rotor est du type « cage d'écureuil » avec un système d'enroulements composé de barres conductrices orientées selon l'axe du rotor, logées dans des encoches tout le long du périmètre externe du noyau ferromagnétique, de forme circulaire. Ces barres se composent de feuilles empilées dans le sens axial et séparées par de fines couches de peinture isolante (voir le dessin en marge).
Les extrémités des barres qui émergent des deux faces du rotor sont court-circuitées et mécaniquement retenues par deux bagues conductrices.
Avec l'axe moteur fixe, on obtient un rotor extrêmement compact et robuste.
Quand les enroulements du stator sont actionnés par un système équilibré de tensions triphasées, un champ magnétique est créé, induisant des courants dans les conducteurs du rotor, lesquels produisent un champ de réaction.
Tant que la vitesse relative entre le champ d'induction et le rotor est différente de zéro, le champ en mouvement recoupe les lignes de courant qui circulent dans les barres. Cela produit une poussée sur le rotor qui lui donne son mouvement.
Mais sa vitesse ne peut jamais atteindre celle du champ magnétique rotatif car cela éliminerait le mouvement relatif entre le champ magnétique rotatif et le système induit, ce qui arrêterait l'induction du courant qui accélère le mouvement.
La vitesse de rotation du champ magnétique inductif est également appelée vitesse de synchronisme.
L'illustration suivante montre les caractéristiques mécaniques obtenues grâce à une tension constante et une fréquence croissante.
Le moteur fonctionne avec une « puissance constante disponible ». La poussée utile diminue à mesure que la vitesse augmente.

Les courbes montrent comment le moteur peut démarrer par lui-même en fournissant une certaine poussée de démarrage. La poussée augmente avec l'accélération de la rotation jusqu'à une valeur maximale proche de la vitesse de synchronisme d'où elle retombe rapidement à zéro. En effet, quand le rotor tourne à la même vitesse que le champ magnétique, leur vitesse relative devient nulle, de même que la force électromotrice et les courants induits.
Par l'augmentation de la vitesse relative entre le rotor et le champ magnétique, la force électromotrice induite augmente tant en amplitude qu'en fréquence.
Electriquement, les enroulements du rotor ont une impédance donnée qui augmente en même temps que la fréquence et, par conséquent, diminue l'amplitude des courants induits et la phase. C'est pourquoi la poussée est réduite.
Changer la fréquence de l'alimentation de manière adaptée modifie la vitesse de synchronisme et la poussée maximale. Il est donc simple de modifier la vitesse de fonctionnement stable.
Pendant la phase de démarrage, l'utilisation d'une basse fréquence permet d'obtenir une vitesse relative plus faible. L'impédance du rotor diminue alors et les courants possèdent des amplitudes et des phases plus grandes, augmentant ainsi la poussée.

Keeping Your Customer in the Driver’s Seat
When customers bring their vehicle to a facility for specific repairs, the bill may represent several hundred dollars. Some front counter people may conclude that the already large bill is “enough”, and it is not necessary to inspect the whole vehicle and get into additional work that will drive the bill even higher. They think….”we will do that the next time”. Their perception may be that the customer could be “scared away” with an even larger bill, or the vehicle is not worth a higher investment, or the customer does not look like they can afford it. The truth is, omitting a proper inspection and failing to communicate the true condition of the vehicle will lead to dissatisfied customers and lost revenues. If you want them to consider your shop as the “best”, return in the future, and even refer other new customers to you, your opportunity lies in “how” you communicate with that customer.
It’s the Customer’s Choice
John X, Manager, XX, shared some insight with me, into how leading service providers use effective communication to maximize sales and customer satisfaction. Communication starts right at the outset of the visit with a simple statement …. “If we find anything else wrong with the reliability of your vehicle, we will inform you.” It may seem silly to make this statement, but it is not! (NOTE –this statement becomes meaningless if you are over booked with too many vehicles for the staff on hand) When service advisors hesitate to add to the bill, often out of fear of upsetting the customer, they take away the customer’s “right” to know. Keep your customer in the driver’s seat. Your professional attitude in communicating facts and NOT deciding for them what service they can afford, is what allows them to make an informed decision…..and if they are coming in for “only” an oil change….make it an even higher priority to make that statement !!!
Standard of communications
Motorist Assurance Program (MAP) of Canada sets standards for communication. Members of MAP keep the customer in control of the work completed on their vehicle. The program provides accredited facilities with “Uniform Inspection and Communications Standards”, which helps to provide a written report for the customer, outlining repairs “required” for safety and reliability reasons, and “suggested” repairs which will provide benefits ranging from improved fuel efficiency and better environmental friendliness, to straight forward enhancement of comfort. Furthermore, the communication describes what should be done when and it becomes a feature that reflects on the professionalism of your shop.
Customers want a Safe and Reliable Vehicle
Consider that all consumers do not see vehicle service as a grudge purchase! Customers rely heavily on their vehicles and are relieved when their automotive problems are solved. They want a safe and reliable vehicle. They also expect to avoid break-downs and expect you to be the one that warns them otherwise. Another benefit is that when they choose to have “suggested” work completed during their next service visit, they are able to budget for these repairs in advance.
Combining Effective Practices creates Results
In our previous articles we discussed two important best practices. The first was scheduling. By bringing in the correct number of vehicles per day for the staff on hand, vehicles are properly assessed, and potential sales are not missed. The second was have clear objectives (every vehicle gets an inspection) to ensure your staff understand their role in the business achieving its goals. Quand les clients apportent leur véhicule dans un établissement pour des réparations précises, la facture peut atteindre plusieurs centaines de dollars. Certains employés de réception peuvent en déduire que le montant de la facture est déjà suffisamment élevé et qu'il n'est pas nécessaire d'examiner l'ensemble du véhicule, car cela peut entraîner du travail supplémentaire pouvant augmenter encore ce montant. Ils se disent « On fera ça la prochaine fois ». Ils craignent d'effrayer le client avec une facture encore plus importante ou considèrent que le véhicule n'en vaut plus la peine. Ou bien, le client leur semble manquer de moyens. En réalité, l'absence d'inspection correcte et le défaut de communication à propos de l'état réel du véhicule conduit au mécontentement du client et à la perte de revenus. Si vous voulez que le client considère votre atelier comme le meilleur, qu'il revienne dans l'avenir et, même, qu'il vous recommande à d'autres, vos possibilités dépendent de votre manière de communiquer avec lui.
Le choix appartient au client
John X, directeur des centres d'entretien automobile XX, a partagé quelques impressions avec moi quant à la manière d'induire les prestataires de services dans une communication efficace, afin de maximiser les ventes et la satisfaction du client. La communication commence précisément au début de la visite par une déclaration simple : « Si nous constatons quoi que ce soit qui menace la fiabilité de votre véhicule, nous vous en informerons ». Cette déclaration peut paraître oiseuse, mais elle ne l'est pas ! (REMARQUE : cette déclaration perd de son sens si votre équipe est surchargée par de trop nombreux véhicules à traiter.) Souvent, par crainte de contrarier le client, lorsqu'ils hésitent à faire grimper la facture, les conseillers de service omettent le « droit de savoir » du client. Laissez votre client aux commandes. Votre attitude professionnelle, en communiquant des faits aux clients SANS décider à leur place quelles prestations ils peuvent se payer, est ce qui leur permet de prendre des décisions en toute connaissance de cause. S'ils viennent seulement pour une vidange d'huile, faites de cette déclaration une priorité encore plus importante !!!
Normes de communication
Le Programme de Protection des Automobilistes du Canada établit des normes de communication. Les adhérents à ce programme placent le client aux commandes du travail effectué sur son véhicule. Ce programme propose des établissements agréés répondant à des « Normes d'inspection et de communication uniformes » qui facilitent la rédaction d'un rapport écrit destiné au client. Ce rapport détaille les réparations nécessaires pour la sécurité et la fiabilité, ainsi que les réparations conseillées pour des raisons telles que l'économie de carburant, le respect de l'environnement et l'amélioration du confort. En outre, la communication décrit ce qui doit être fait et quand cela doit être fait. Elle devient une caractéristique du professionnalisme de votre atelier.
Les clients veulent un véhicule sûr et fiable
Gardez à l'esprit que tous les clients ne considèrent pas l'entretien de leur véhicule comme une dépense dont ils ont à se plaindre ! Les clients comptent beaucoup sur leur véhicule et se sentent soulagés quand leurs problèmes automobiles sont résolus. Ils veulent un véhicule sûr et fiable. Ils souhaitent aussi éviter les pannes et comptent sur vous pour les avertir des éventuels risques. Autre avantage : lorsqu'ils choisissent de faire réaliser les travaux conseillés lors de leur visite d'entretien suivante, ils peuvent prévoir le budget nécessaire à l'avance.
La combinaison de pratiques efficaces donne des résultats
Dans nos articles précédents, nous avons abordé deux importantes pratiques d'excellence. La première était la planification. En confiant quotidiennement le nombre correct de véhicules à l'équipe, ces véhicules sont correctement évalués et aucune vente potentielle n'est manquée.
