It was a cold white day in High Street, and nothing to stop the wind slicing up from the docks, for where the squat and tall shops had shielded the town from the sea lay their blitzed flat graves marbled with snow and headstoned with fences. Dogs, delicate as cats on water, as though they had gloves on their paws, padded over the vanished buildings. Boys romped, calling high and clear, on top of a levelled chemist's and a shoe-shop, and a little girl, wearing a man's cap, threw a snowball in a chill deserted garden that had once been the jug and Bottle of the Prince of Wales. The wind cut up the street with a soft sea-noise hanging on its arm, like a hooter in a muffler. I could see the swathed hill stepping up out of the town, which you never could see properly before, and the powdered fields of the roofs of Milton Terrace and Watkin Street and Fullers Row. Fish-frailed, netbagged, umbrella'd, pixie-capped, fur-shoed, blue-nosed, puce-lipped, blinkered like drayhorses, scarved, mittened, galoshed, wearing everything but the cat's blanket, crushes of shopping-women crunched in the little Lapland of the once grey drab street, blew and queued and yearned for hot tea, as I began my search through Swansea town cold and early on that wicked February morning. Era un día blanco y frío en High Street y nada detenía el viento que venía desde el puerto, pues donde los negocios altos y bajos antes protegían al pueblo del mar ahora sólo había tumbas planas y bombardeadas, cubiertas de nieve como mármol, y con cercas como lápidas. Los perros, delicados como gatos en el agua, caminaban con cuidado sobre las ruinas de los edificios, como si tuviesen guantes en las patas. Los niños, a los gritos, jugaban sobre una farmacia y una zapatería arrasadas por el derrumbe. Una pequeña niña, con una gorra de hombre, lanzó una bola de nieve en un jardín frío y desierto que había sido el salón Jug and Bottle del bar Prince of Wales. El viento avanzaba por la calle con un suave ruido de mar como una sirena lejana. Podía ver la colina cubierta, que antes nunca se divisaba con claridad, elevarse al salir de la ciudad, y los restos de los techos de Milton Terrace, Watkin Street y Fullers Row. Cientos de mujeres de compras, frágiles, con bolsas de red, paraguas, sombreros puntiagudos y zapatos de piel, con las narices frías, los labios morados y la vista fija como caballos con anteojeras, con bufandas, guantes y galochas, y usando todo lo que podían vestir menos la manta del gato, tiritaban en la pequeña Laponia de la calle alguna vez gris y monótona.
