Welche Möglichkeiten des Variantenmanagements ergeben sich durch die Verwendung von XML in der Technischen Redaktion? Stellen wir uns dazu zunächst die Marketing- und Vertriebsabteilung eines Waschmaschinenherstellers vor. Der Hersteller möchte eines seiner Erfolgsmodelle mit geringem technischen Aufwand auch in einem höherpreisigen Segment anbieten. Dazu definiert er eine neue Maschine, die sich von einer bestehenden Maschine nur durch die maximale Schleuderdrehzahl unterscheidet. Er erhöht sie von 1500 U/min auf 1800 U/min und verpasst der Neuschöpfung einen klingenden Namen, findet einen höheren Preis und hat damit seine Aufgabe erfüllt.
Aus Sicht der Technischen Dokumentation fangen damit jedoch die Probleme unter Umständen erst an: Je nach verwendetem Werkzeug bieten sich mehr oder weniger elegante Möglichkeiten. Im schlimmsten Fall wird das ursprüngliche Handbuch schlichtweg kopiert und die Zahl 1500 durch 1800 ersetzt. Für eine vergleichsweise geringe Varianz der Produkte wird eine hohe Redundanz der Informationen in Kauf genommen.
Konstruktiv oder destruktiv?
Wie so oft kommt es darauf an, einen gesunden Kompromiss zwischen der Anzahl der Module und der Redundanzfreiheit zu finden. In der Praxis haben sich zwei Prinzipien etabliert, um einer hohen Variantenvielfalt bei gleichzeitiger hoher Redundanzfreiheit gerecht zu werden, die konstruktive und destruktive Methode.

Let us first consider the Marketing and Sales division of a manufacturer of washing machines. The manufacturer wishes to offer one of the successful models in a higher-price segment after a few technical modifications.
