What, exactly, is ageing all about? It’s the subject of hot debate among scientists.
Some see it as an unavoidable process that we can only slow down by postponing ageing-related diseases as long as possible. Others see it as a specific biological process that one day we may learn how to switch off.
For decades, it was thought that ageing was a way of getting rid of a generation of people who had already reproduced and so were no longer useful to the survival of the species. But in 1956 US scientist Dr Denham Harmon came up with the theory that ageing wasn’t simply a sign that our time was nearly up – it was the result of the build-up of faults in the body. And these faults are caused by damage from unstable molecules called free radicals.
Free radicals are by-products of normal bodily
processes – like breathing, eating and drinking
– which are ‘unstable’ as they lack an electron,
so they career around the body looking for
spare electrons to bind with. In optimal health,
the body simply mops up free radicals and
makes them harmless. But if the body’s selfrepair capabilities weaken, free radicals, and the damage they cause, can accumulate,
leading to serious diseases, muscle and bone
wastage, reduced skin elasticity, weakened
sight and hearing and slower mental reactions. Everything we associate with getting old. But this can be slowed down by eating more vegetables – they contain antioxidants which bind with free radicals and make them harmless.

Waar gaat het bij ouder worden eigenlijk om? Dat is een onderwerp voor verhitte discussies tussen geleerden. Sommigen zien het als een onafwendbaar proces dat we alleen maar kunnen vertragen door aan ouderdom gerelateerde ziekten zo lang mogelijk uit te stellen. Anderen beschouwen het als een specifiek biologisch proces dat we misschien ooit kunnen leren uit te zetten.
Tientallen jaren heeft men gedacht dat ouder worden een manier was om een generatie kwijt te raken van mensen die zichzelf al hadden voortgeplant en dus niet langer nuttig waren voor de soort. Maar in 1956 kwam de Amerikaanse wetenschapper Dr. Denham Harmon met de theorie dat ouder worden niet alleen maar een teken was dat onze tijd er bijna op zat – het was het resultaat van de opeenstapeling van foutjes in het lichaam. En deze foutjes worden veroorzaakt door schade van instabiele moleculen die we vrije radicalen noemen.
Vrije radicalen zijn de bijproducten van normale processen in het lichaam – zoals ademhalen, eten en drinken – die ‘instabiel’ zijn omdat ze een elektron missen, waardoor ze door het lichaam zwerven op zoek naar losse elektronen om zich mee te verbinden. Wanneer je perfect gezond bent, veegt het lichaam de vrije radicalen gewoon bij elkaar en maakt ze onschadelijk. Maar als het zelfherstellend vermogen van het lichaam afneemt, kunnen vrije radicalen en de schade die ze aanrichten zich ophopen, wat leidt tot ernstige ziekten, spier- en bot verlies, verminderde veerkracht van je huid, slechter zien en minder snelle geestelijke reacties. Allemaal dingen die we associëren met ouder worden. Maar dit kan vertraagd worden door meer groenten te eten – ze bevatten antioxidanten die de vrije radicalen aan zich binden en ze onschadelijk maken.
