The Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education will soon be announcing the accountability determinations required under the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) for all schools in the Commonwealth. This annual proficiency standard is known as Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP), which is designed to chart student progress toward achieving 100% proficiency in English Language Arts and Mathematics by 2014.
Each school’s AYP status is determined by examining student participation and performance data on the Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System (MCAS), as well as attendance and graduation rates. All (Name of the school system) schools have earned the top level of distinction, with performance ratings for every one of our schools in the “high” and “very high” categories. At the same time, the preliminary data indicate that four (4) of our schools have not met AYP targets for
at least one student sub-group for the past two years. These four schools are now designated as “Year One Improvement Status,” meaning that each school will be completing an improvement plan to address the concerns for student learning in these sub-groups.
Furthermore, parents and guardians in schools assigned “Year One Improvement Status” also have a school choice option, meaning that they may request that their student(s) be moved to a school that does
not have an improvement status.
We wholeheartedly support the overall goal of NCLB, which is to provide children with a quality education and to close the achievement gap. However, we will continue to carefully examine this data, along with our other measures of student and school achievement in order to construct a more complete picture of our system. As 2014 approaches, it appears that nearly every school system in the Commonwealth, including those traditionally considered to be high performing, has or will have schools designated as not meeting AYP.
The formulas used to calculate AYP can be complex and confusing, and we encourage you to learn more about all that this federal standard entails. より質の高い教育を提供し、児童、生徒の達成度の差を埋めようというNCLBの全体的なゴールを私共は心から支援します。しかしながら、私共の教育システムにより詳しい全体図を作り上げる為、私たち独自の基準も取り入れて生徒と学校の改善度をはかりながら、今回のデータを引き続き慎重に調べて参ります。2014年が近づいておりますが、伝統的に高学力を保持する学校を含むほとんどの学校が、現在「AYPの基準に達成していない」、または、将来的に「AYPの基準に達成できていない」と判断されることになると思われます。
