日本で洋蘭の栽培が始まったのは、1884年頃とされる。早稲田大学の創立者・大隈重信は洋蘭に魅せられ温室で栽培、日本における洋蘭栽培の先駆者の１人として知られている。
1906年、大隈邸の洋蘭（オンシジウムやカトレア）をモチーフに京友禅の千総が染色柄に取り入れた。大隈邸が早稲田にあったことから、その柄は「早稲田の薫」と呼ばれ、売り出された振袖や帯が人気を博し、一世を風靡した。
それから約100年。当時のデザインを基に大隈講堂に用いられている大隈家の家紋「裏梅剣花菱」をアレンジした文様とを組み合わせ、復刻したものが本品である。 | Translation - English
The cultivation of Western types of orchid began in Japan around 1884. Charmed by their beauty, Waseda University's founder Shigenobu Okuma started growing orchids in a greenhouse and became one of the pioneers in orchid cultivation in Japan.
Inspired by Okuma’s orchids, including oncidium and cattleya, Chiso, a leader in the Kyo-Yuzen style of dyeing, created a series of floral patterns in 1906. Since the Okuma residence was located in Waseda, those patterns were called “The Scent of Waseda.” Kimonos and obi sashes with the patterns created a sensation and became extremely popular.
After a century, this scarf marks a revival of “The Scent of Waseda” -- a beautiful fusion of one of the original designs and a motif inspired by Okuma’s family crest Uraumekenhanabishi, which also embellishes Okuma Auditorium. |
