Der Durchmesser des Virions wird mit 25-Mikrons angegeben. Das Virus besitzt haemagglutinierende Eigenschaften und laesst sich im Huehnerembryo sowie auf Gewebekulturen zuechten. Das Virus verursacht vor allem bei Schaf,Ziege und Rind viraemische Krankenheitsbilder. Die Letalitaet ist bei Jungtieren gros. Traechtige Tiere aborftieren. Beim Menschen, fuer welchen das Virus ebenfalls pathogen ist, kommt es nach einer Inkubation von 4-6 Tagen zu einer ploetzlich beginnenden, fieberhaften Krankheit, die durchschnittlich 1 Woche dauert, biphasisch verlaufen kann und eine gute Progose besitzt.
Waehrend der Erreger durch Vektoren von Tier zu Tier uebertragen wird, infiziert sich Menschen meistens aerogen an tierischen Produkten. Die aetiologische Diagnose wird durch Virusnachweis gestellt. Das Virus ist fur kleine Versuchstiere pathogen.
Das Rift-Valley-Fieber ist endemisch in weiten Teilen vovn Zentral-Sud-und Ost Afrika.
Schutzimpfungen bei den Tieren haben nur Teilerfolgen gefuehrt.

The virus diameter is reported to be 25-50 microns. The virus has the ability to grow in chick embryos and tissue cultue and possesses the ability to produce hemagglutination. In sheep, cattle and goats, the virus presents as a viremia. In young animals the mortality is high. Pregnant animals abort. The virus is also pathogenic for people. After a 4-6 day incubation period the disease shows itself with a sudden febrile onset that on average lasts 1 week and can run a biphasic course with a favorable prognosis.
While the agent is transmitted from animal to animal through vectors, humans become infected mostly by aerosols derived from animal products.
The etiological diagnosis is made by demonstrating the virus. The virus is pathogenic for small laboratory animals.
Rift Valley Fever is endemic in large areas of central,south and east Africa.
Vaccinations in animals have only been partially successful.

I am a graduate veterinarian who conducted a small and large animal practice for 20 years. Presently I work for the United States Department of Agriculture and have experience with animal diseases foreign to the US such as avian influenza and mad cow disease. In 1988 I wrote a book about my practice experiences titled "The Boxer Rebellion and Other Tales". It was published by J.I. Fine and Co. of New York, New York. I backed into German by wanting to learn Yiddish. I was in my mid 40s. I have also studied Spanish, Japanese and Hebrew; however, German is the language in which I have the most expertise. Try me.
