The organic tactility, refreshing scent and minimalist aesthetics of bamboo lend the notebook an arresting aura of spirituality, warmth and old world charm that synthetic materials and cold, impersonal metals will struggle to replicate. | English to French: The limit between life and death General field: Art/Literary | Source text - English If it’s possible to say that we have a neo-modernist turn in our contemporary condition, then I would dare to argue, it is in a form of mechanized mass-production. The neo-modernist turn is a new kind of lobotomy. And lobotomy is, as you already now, a method of a technical adjustment of our feelings and was used as a quintessential mark of the modernistic time. Lobotomy was born in the beginning of the last century and corresponds perfectly with another sign of modernity, with the Fordist mode of production, the serialized type of production within the capitalistic industrial mode. Similarly to the Fordist serial product, emotional situations are repeated (slightly re-adjusted) over and over again.
The outcome of lobotomy is a cataleptic condition, a frozen state of mind, a frozen state of the body. A situation that stems on a certain logical way of thinking, on some structurally naive mode of believing (as such it is possible to think about a certain utopian moment in our contemporary condition), but in the end it shows clearly that feelings, reactions, stances are only reproducible, without possible solution, rather leaving a situation of complete resignation. Emotions, suicidal perspectives, destruction, poverty, misery, drug abuse, murdering etc, the list, too long to sum up all psychosis of the modern time, contain facts, without morality, without surprise.
If it is possible to think about a resistance, then it is not resistance against, but within the field of art, in a form of “deejay-vu bit” with in the end a formalistic touch that is near to a theatre of grotesque.
And what about the return of the great narrative as another element of the neo-modernistic turn? The great narrative today is the separation between life and death, about the question what is life, and what is the distinction between man and the animal, and even more, what is the distinction between art and life (the great thesis of the neo-avant-garde), or as this separation is precisely captured by the paradigm “Between angels and cadavers” (XXXX). Isn’t this the position of our body and feelings in the time we live? We are half angels, but in the end just ready to be cadavers!
