Source text - Catalan Torredembarra és una vila turística i comercial molt ben comunicada: per carretera (N-340), per autopista (A-7, a la sortida 32) i tren. Amb una situació privilegiada, en ple cor de la Costa Daurada, es troba a molt poca distància de la ciutat de Tarragona, coneguda pel seu llegat romà; Reus, ciutat natal de Gaudí, amb la seva ruta Modernista, i a uns 80 km. de Barcelona. El seu entorn divers va des de l'encant natural del Delta de l'Ebre, la ruta del Císter - que cobreix els més importants monestirs cistercencs de la província de Tarragona - i Montblanc medieval, a l'ambient nocturn més mogut de Salou i la Pineda LLOCS D'INTERÈS PER VISITAR El nucli antic de Torredembarra, de gran importància històrica, destaca per les seves construccions, com el Castell dels Icard, de mitjan segle XVI i que és l'únic castell de nova planta del renaixement català que es conserva a Catalunya, la Torre de la Vila, del s. XII o XIII, i d'estil mudèjar, l'Església Parroquial de Sant Pere, que es va acabar de construir el 1680, tot i que als anys 1705 i 1771-1778 es va acabar de dotar d'alguns elements arquitectònics. Dins de l'església destaquen El Quadre de Santa Rosalia, que va salvar el poble de l'epidèmia de la pesta, i l'orgue Barroc. En el nucli antic també hi destaquen el Portal de Padrines i el Portal de la Bassa, restes de l'antiga muralla que envoltava la vila al segle XVII. Al barri marítim, Baix a Mar, hi trobem l'antiga llotja de pescadors o Societat Industrial de Pesca: 'El Pes', del 1929, i que es troba al passeig marítim. Al carrer Indústria també hi podem trobar l'edifici modernista de la Cooperativa Marítima, del segle XIX. Des del barri marítim podem agafar el passeig marítim, que ens durà fins al Port esportiu, vorejant gran part de l'extensa platja de Torredembarra. El port esportiu és de construcció recent, i disposa de 820 amarratges. Força a prop del port, hi trobem l'últim far que s'ha construït a Espanya durant el segle XX, i que es va inaugurar l'1 de gener del 2000. Val a dir que el far de Torredembarra és el que té la torre més alta de tots els fars de Catalunya, superant en 7m al del Llobregat. Les zones d'interès natural del poble són: la platja d'Els Muntanyans, platja natural típica de la costa catalana, on hi trobem dunes (muntanyans) i salats (maresmes) ben conservats; el Roquer, entre la platja de la Paella i la platja del Canyadell, amb els seus impressionants penya-segats; Les Antines: les barres de roca submarines, que consten de tres barres de roca, a diferents distàncies de la línia de costa, i que surten, en direcció nord-est, des del davant del que és ara l'estació del tren de Torredembarra. FESTES I TRADICIONS Torredembarra és un poble ple de vida, i disposa d'un bon cartell de festes, tant del poble com diades de caràcter nacional i tradicional, que s'estén durant tot l'any, com per exemple : 20 de gener : Sant Sebastià - Festa Major del barri de Sant Jordi Voltants de febrer : Carnaval 23 d'abril : Sant Jordi - dia de la rosa i el llibre 24 de juny : Sant Joan - Festa Major de Baix a Mar (Barri Marítim) 15 de juliol : Festa del Quadre de Santa Rosalia (Festa Major petita del poble) 4 de setembre : Santa Rosalia, Festa Major del poble 11 de setembre : Diada Nacional de Catalunya Una de les facetes que fa de Torredembarra un poble essencialment mediterrani i català són les celebracions i la manera com s'han mantingut i recuperat les tradicions. Avui en dia, Torredembarra compta amb un seguici popular molt extens, gràcies a la gent del poble, grans i petits, que han ajudat a recuperar diferents balls populars que s'havien perdut. Així, el seguici popular de Torredembarra consta de: Colla castellera 'Els Nois de la Torre', Ball de diables, la Virgília (drac), l'Àguila, Ball de Bastons, Ball de Pastorets, Ball de Cavallets, Ball de Serrallonga, els nans i els gegants: en Joan i la Rosalia. LA PLATJA DE TORREDEMBARRA L'entreteniment principal a l'estiu, tant de la gent del poble com dels visitants, és anar a la platja, i gaudir dels diferents espais i paisatges que la platja de Torredembarra els ofereix. La platja de la Paella, més propera al Port esportiu i que disposa d'una zona amb l'equipament necessari per a la pràctica de diferents esports, sense haver de renunciar a una remulladeta de tant en tant. Sobretot a l'estiu s'organitzen diferents torneigs i campionats que són molt ben acollits i que tenen una gran participació, sobretot per part del jovent del poble. També hem de dir que aquesta zona de la platja és la més ampla, i pot arribar a mesurar fins a 90 metres en alguns punts. La platja del barri marítim, de menys amplada, està situada a l'antic barri de pescadors, i també disposa d'algunes instal•lacions per a practicar tennis o volley platja. La platja dels Muntanyans, d'una amplada mitjana de 85 metres, i que posseeix muntanyans i salats, amb la seva flora i fauna típiques. Aquesta platja està inclosa dins del PEIN ( Pla d'Espais d'Interès Natural) de la Generalitat de Catalunya. La platja de Torredembarra sol obtenir any rere any la qualificació més bona, la bandera blava, que assegura la higiene i les atencions que es dediquen al manteniment, diari a l'estiu, de la platja, que fa que la sorra i l'aigua quedin lliures de brosses.

Translation - English Torredembarra is a very popular and commercial spot. Its location, in the heart of the Costa Daurada, is excellent and it is very well communicated: by road (N-340), highway (AP-7, exit nr. 32) and train. Very close to Tarragona (well-know thanks to its Roman legacy) and Reus (which has a lovely route paying attention to the main buildings of the Catalan Modernism that exist in this town). Torredembarra is also very close to Barcelona, 80 km approximately. Its surroundings go from the calmness and the natural charm of the Delta de l'Ebre, the Cistercian monasteries route, the medieval town of Montblanc,... to the lively cities of Salou, La Pineda and Cambrils, which are basically known thanks to their night life. If you want to know Torredembarra you'll have to take some time to have a walk and you will discover the beauty of Els Muntanyans(one of the most important humid areas of Catalonia), the Mediterranean nature surrounding the cliffs that hang over the sea, the charm of the old fishing quarter and the marina, where people usually go for a drink and where you can find restaurants, pubs and discos. Torredembarra is not as big as a city can be, but it is divided into different quarters: Clarà, Els Munts, the fishing quarter "Baix a Mar", Babilònia, Sant Jordi and the old town. INTERESTING PLACES In the old town we can find many remarkable buildings or constructions: the Castell dels Icard (the Castle), built in the XVI th century, the Torre de la Vila(the Tower) built in the XII-XIII the century and the XVII th century church. Inside the church we will find a picture of Santa Rosalia, the saint patron of Torredembarra (who saved the town from the Black Death) and the baroque organ. In the old town we can also find the Portal de Padrines and the Portal de la Bassa , which are two gates of the old defensive wall that surrounded the town in the XVIIth century. In the fishing quarter, Baix a Mar, you can find the old fish market house, also called Societat Industrial de la Pesca (the Fishing Industrial Society) built in 1929. In Indústria street we can also find a XIXth century building (Catalan Modernist style) which was the headquarter of the Cooperativa Marítima, the Shipping Cooperative. The promenade will lead us from the fishing quarter to the marina. The marina is a recent construction, providing 820 moorings for motorboats, sailing ships and other types of ships. Very close to the marina we can find one of the last lighthouses that were built in Spain in the XXth century and inaugurated on January 1st, in 2000. The Torredembarra lighthouse is the tallest in Catalonia. The most important natural areas of the town : the beach of "Els Muntanyans" (which is a typical beach of the Catalan coast with sand dunes and salt-marshes), the "Roquer" (between the beach of La Paella and the beach of Canyadell, with its amazing cliffs over the sea) and "Les Antines" (submarine rock bars). FIESTA AND TRADITIONS Torredembarra is a not only a quiet town. There are many events over the year, some of them are the own fiestas of the town, others are national celebrations: 20th January: Sant Sebastià (Saint Sebastian) – celebration day of Sant Jordi's district February: Carnival 23rd April: Sant Jordi (Saint George's day) – there is a Catalan tradition which consists on an exchange of presents between the two of the couple: the woman offering a book to her man and the man giving her a rose. 24th of June: Sant Joan (Saint John) – celebration day of Baix a Mar (fishing quarter) 15th of July: Festa del Quadre de Santa Rosalia (celebration dedicated to the Picture of Saint Rosalia) 4th of September: Santa Rosalia, Major celebration of the town 11th of September: Diada Nacional de Catalunya, celebration day of Catalonia One of the features that makes Torredembarra a Mediterranean and Catalan town is the way in which the traditions and celebrations have been maintained. Nowadays, Torredembarra has got an important "seguici", which is formed by all the popular groups, who make street processions and performances: "Colla castellera Nois de la Torre" (the ones that make "human towers"), "Ball de diables" (the ones that walk, jump and go around holding a stick with firecracker, pretending they are devils who come from Hell – "diable" is the Catalan word for "devil") ; "Virgilia" (a female dragon that comes from the sea), "Àguila" (the eagle), "Ball de Bastons" (group of people who performs dances with their wooden sticks, hitting the ground or the partner's sticks with them, always following the music), "Ball de Pastorets" ("pastoret" means little shepherd), "Ball de Cavallets" (group of fighting people who are divided, pretending to be Arabs and Christians), "Ball de Serrallonga" (group of people who fire their blunderbusses in the air), "nans" (the dwarfs) and the "gegants" (giants), who are called: Joan (male giant) and Rosalia (female giant). THE BEACH OF TORREDEMBARRA The main entertainment in summer in Torredembarra, both for its inhabitants and visitors, is to go to the beach, enjoying the different activities and landscapes it offers. The beach of "La Paella" is the one which is closer to the marina . It has got an area in which you can practice different beach sports. Many sport competitions (beach volleyball, tennis, etc) are celebrated in this area, above all in summer. This beach is very wide, up to 90 metres at some points. The beach of "Baix a Mar", which is not as wide as "La Paella", is located in front of the fishing quarter, and it has also got some sport facilities to practice beach volley or tennis. The beach of "els Muntanyans", approximately 85 metres wide, has got many sand dunes and salt-marshes. This beach is included in the PEIN, which protects the natural areas of Catalonia and is promoted by the "Generalitat de Catalunya" (the Catalan government). The beach of Torredembarra gets the Blue Flag almost every year. This means it is awarded by the European Union for its quality. A special attention is paid to the maintenance and hygiene of the beach. All the objects and litter which has been deposited in the sand during the day is swept every night in summer, so that the sea water does not get dirty.
