A plasma processing apparatus is used for dry etching and the like typically used in a process of manufacturing semiconductor devices. The plasma processing apparatus introduces a gas into a processing container and excites the gas with a high frequency wave, a microwave or the like to generate radicals and ions. Then, the radicals and ions generated by plasma react with a targetsubject substrate and a reaction product, which is a volatile gas, is exhausted to the outside by a vacuum exhaustion system.
