AMSTERDAM - De Europese aandelenbeurzen stonden maandagmiddag in de plus, nadat ze een groot deel van de dag op kleine verliezen stonden. Een duidelijke aanleiding voor het lichte herstel was er niet.
“Een kleine plus of een kleine min maakt weinig verschil. De handelsvolumes zijn vandaag erg laag”, zegt beleggingsadviseur Sijmen Plomp van Dresdner VPV. Dit komt vooral omdat de beurzen in New York en Londen maandag gesloten zijn. Verder is er weinig richtinggevend nieuws voor beleggers.
Met nog een klein uur handel te gaan, noteerde de AEX-index van meest verhandelde fondsen in Amsterdam 0,4 procent hoger op 261,20 punten. De MidKap-index van middelgrote fondsen won 0,2 procent tot 371,65 punten. De graadmeters in Frankfurt en Parijs wonnen respectievelijk 0,2 en 0,6 procent.
Duitsland
Beleggers reageerden in de ochtend teleurgesteld op macrocijfers uit Duitsland. Het optimisme van Duitse ondernemers is minder groot dan analisten hadden verwacht. De index van het Duitse onderzoeksinstituut Ifo dat het vertrouwen weergeeft, steeg van 83,7 in april naar 84,2. Analisten gepolst door persbureau Reuters gingen er vanuit dat de index zou stijgen naar een stand van 85.
“Er heerst wel optimisme dat het ergste achter de rug is, maar de huidige situatie is uitermate somber”, aldus econooom Michel van der Stee van Van Lanschot Bankiers.
Wall Street
De handelsdag verloopt verder vrij rustig. “We hebben geen steun van Wall Street en er komen geen belangrijke cijfers”, verklaart de econooom. In de Verenigde Staten is het Memorial Day, een gedenkdag voor Amerikaanse militairen.
Elektronicaconcern Philips maakte voorbeurs bekend een akkoord te hebben bereikt met Saeco over overname van de Italiaanse koffiemachinefabrikant. Het aandeel noteerde 1,2 procent hoger op 13,96 euro. “Het is niet schokkend. Op het hele concern maakt deze overname niet zo veel uit”, aldus Van der Stee.
Porsche
Autofabrikant Porsche was een van de grootste dalers in Europa. Het noodlijdende concern bevestigde zondag een lening van 700 miljoen euro te hebben ontvangen van Volkswagen. Het aandeel Porsche stond bijna 4 procent in de min.
De prijs van een vat olie daalde met 0,9 procent tot 61,12 dollar. Oliemaatschappij Shell noteerde een vlakke stand op 18,53 euro. De euro noteerde op 1,4000 dollar. Bij het slot van de Europese beurzen op vrijdag stond de Europese munt nog op 1,3990 dollar.

European exchanges showing minor gains

AMSTERDAM – The European exchanges were in positive territory Monday afternoon, having shown minor losses for most of the day. There was no clear reason for the slight recovery.
“A small plus or a small minus does not make much difference. Trading volumes are very low today”, says investment-advisor Sijmen Plomp of Dresdner VPV. It is mainly because the exchanges of New York and London are closed on Monday. Moreover, there is little direction-setting news for investors.
With less than an hour to go the AEX-index of most frequently traded funds stood 0.4 percent higher at 261.20 points. The MidKap-index of medium-sized funds gained 0.2 percent to 371.65 points. The gauging exchanges of Frankfurt and Paris gained 0.2 and 0.6 percent respectively.
Germany
During the morning investors reacted disappointedly to the macro-numbers from Germany. German entrepreneurs are less optimistic than analysts had expected. The index of the German research institute Ifo that measures confidence rose from 87.3 in April to 84.2. Analysts sounded out by the Reuters press agency had taken the view that the index would rise to a level of 85.
“There is optimism that the worst is behind us, but the current situation is extremely subdued”, according to economist Michel van der Stee of Van Lanschot Bankiers.
Wall Street
For the remainder the trading day is rather quiet. “We do not have support from Wall Street en no important figures are expected”, the economist states. In the United States it is Memorial Day, a day of remembrance for the American military.
Before opening electronics concern Philips announced to have reached an accord with Saeco about taking over the Italian coffee-machine maker. The share was 1.2 percent higher at 13.96 euros. “It is not exactly shocking. This take-over has little impact on the concern as a whole”, according to Van der Stee.
Porsche
Car maker Porsche was one of the biggest losers in Europe. The ailing company confirmed Sunday having received from Volkswagen a loan of 700 million euros. The share stood almost 4 percent in negative territory.
The price of a barrel of oil fell 0.9 percent to 61.12 dollars. Oil company Shell stood virtually unchanged at 18.53 euros. The euro stood at 1.4000 dollars. At the close of the European exchanges of Friday the currency was still at 1.3990.

The Dollar experienced a mild trading session in yesterday's trading. The USD experienced a relatively flat day as it steadily rose against all of its major currency pairs, except for the Japanese Yen. There was a quiet day of news from the U.S. as there were no economic data releases on the calendar. However, Federal Reserve Board Chairman Ben Bernanke spoke about the state of the U.S. economy and the stress test for banks. He pointed out specifically that he was pleased with banks for raising capital. Investors were optimistic as he said that additional capital from the Federal Reserve will be provided if needed.
Despite this positive news from Bernanke, the stock market in the U.S. and around the world experienced heavy losses. However, part of this may be the start of a correction to the global stock market rally in recent weeks. As a result, the Dollar gained against most of its major currency pairs. The USD took 70 pips from the EUR to close at 1.3591 and a healthy 125 pips from the Pound to close at 1.5095. However, against the JPY, the Dollar lost 100 pips, extending its 3 day loss vs. the Japanese currency. The USD gained against the former 2 currencies due to fears of economic instability.
Today we can expect a higher amount of volatility and instability when it comes to trading with the Dollar and its main currency crosses. This may be even more so due to a heavy schedule of economic data releases and the ambitious economic recovery plan of President Barack Obama. The Trade Balance figures will be published at 12:30 GMT, IBD/TIPP Economic Optimism figures are expected to be released at 14:00 GMT, and the Federal Budget Balance results are scheduled to be published at 18:00 GMT. De Dollar bevond zich gisteren in een wat rustiger vaarwater. De munt rees gestadig tegen alle belangrijke valuta, behalve tegen de Japanse Yen. Het was ook een rustige dag wat betreft nieuws uit de Verenigde Staten, want er stonden geen economische bekendmakingen op het programma. Niettemin, Federal Reserve Board Voorzitter Ben Bernanke sprak zich uit over de toestand van de Amerikaanse economie en stresst test voor de banken. Hij wees nadrukkelijk op zijn tevredenheid met de banken over het uitgeven van nieuw kapitaal. STUTTGART/WOLFSBURG - In das Übernahmegerangel bei Porsche und Volkswagen kommt wieder Bewegung.
Die Gespräche über eine Verschmelzung der beiden Autobauer liefen auf Vorstandsebene weiter, sagte ein Porsche-Sprecher am Montag. Wann die Verhandlungen über die Schaffung eines integrierten Autokonzerns abgeschlossen werden, sei noch offen.
Die Wolfsburger hatten vor gut einer Woche nach ersten Treffen weitere Verhandlungen auf Eis gelegt.
Sie hatten Porsche vorgeworfen, nicht mit offenen Karten zu spielen und kein klares Bild über die tatsächliche Lage abzugeben.
Neun Milliarden Euro Schulden
Porsche hat sich bei der geplanten Übernahme von Europas größtem Autobauer verhoben und eine Nettoverschuldung von rund neun Milliarden Euro angehäuft.
Die Porsche-Eigentümerfamilien Porsche und Piëch hatten sich daraufhin vor einigen Wochen geeinigt, einen integrierten Autokonzern mit Volkswagen zu schaffen. Strittig sind unter anderem die Machtverteilung zwischen Stuttgart und Wolfsburg sowie die genaue Struktur des Unternehmens.

Talks between Porsche and VW continue

STUTTGART/WOLFSBURG – Movement in the take-over wrangling between Porsche and VW.
The talks of a merger of both car makers continued at Board level, a spokesman for Porsche said on Monday. It remains open when the negotiations about creating an integrated concern will come to a conclusion.
Just over a week after meeting for the first time the Wolfsburgers had put further negotiations on ice.
They had accused Porsche of not putting their cards on the table and of not providing a clear picture of the actual situation.
Nine Billion Euros of Debt
Porsche had overreached itself with the planned take-over of Europe's largest car maker and accumulated a net debt of around nine billion euros.
The Porsche and Piëch families, which are the major owners of Porsche, agreed a few weeks ago to create an integrated car-making concern with Volkswagen. Among remaining points of contention are the division of power between Stuttgart and Wolfsburg as well as the exact structuring of the compnay.
