When she moved into his tiny house in Stroud, and took charge of his four small children, Mother was thirty and still quite handsome. She had not, I suppose, met anyone like him before. This rather priggish young man, with his devout gentility, his airs and manners, his music and ambitions, his charm, bright talk, and undeniable good looks, overwhelmed her as soon as she saw him. So she fell in love with him immediately, and remained in love for ever. And herself being comely, sensitive, and adoring, she attracted my father also. And so he married her. And so later he left her - with his children and some more of her own.
When he'd gone, she brought us to the village and waited. She waited for thirty years. I don't think she ever knew what had made him desert her, though the reasons seemed clear enough. She was too honest, too natural for this frightened man; too remote from his tidy laws. She was, after all, a country girl; disordered, hysterical, loving. She was muddled and mischievous as a chimney-jackdaw, she made her nest of rags and jewels, was happy in the sunlight, squawked loudly at danger, pried and was insatiably curious, forgot when to eat or ate all day, and sang when sunsets were red. She lived by the easy laws of the hedgerow, loved the world, and made no plans, had a quick holy eye for natural wonders and couldn't have kept a neat house for her life. What my father wished for was something quite different, something she could never give him - the protective order of an unimpeachable suburbia, which was what he got in the end.
The three or four years Mother spent with my father she fed on for the rest of her life. Her happiness at that time was something she guarded as though it must ensure his eventual return. Julgo que nunca tinha conhecido ninguém como ele. Este homem bastante altivo, com a sua cortesia devota, os seus ares e os seus modos, a sua música e as suas ambições, o seu charme, a sua conversa inteligente e a indiscutível beleza, fascinou-a desde o primeiro momento em que o viu. Perdeu-se de amores por ele e assim permaneceu para sempre. E o facto dela ser graciosa, sensível e adorável, também atraiu o meu pai. E não tardou muito até que se casassem. When my wife told me she was pregnant, I got that stomach-churning sensation that hits you on a plunging roller coaster. I was excited, yes, but... oh my God. Parenting was for, well, parents.
So here I stand, bug-eyed and sweating buckets like some poorly-drawn cartoon character, the question marks floating in the air around my head while I try to prepare myself for the complete care and responsibility of another living being besides my cat. I'm responsible for making sure this little human doesn't grow up and turn into a complete monster. If the child turns out a social moron-- my fault. If the babe can't find Luxembourg on the map, blame me for not providing a better education. They'll need therapy, and of course that will be on my head too. So many opportunities for wrong turns!
I remember the day my father sat me down and awkwardly told me about the birds and the bees; it was perhaps the most excruciating and embarrassing half hour of both our lives. I can't do that to another human being.
Maybe I'm getting a little ahead of myself here. I can do this, I say; I'll be a great father. My child will be reared a well-rounded, educated, upstanding citizen of the world, and he or she won't hate me.
And then I imagine the baby, still safe within the confines of my wife's belly, suddenly opening an alarmed eye as the thought enters his or her mind: "What if my dad just can't hack it? | Translation - Portuguese (EU)
Quando a minha mulher me disse que estava grávida, senti aquele friozinho no estômago que temos quando andamos na montanha-russa. Fiquei contente, é claro, mas... valha-me Deus. Ser pai era para… pais.
E assim fiquei, de olhos esbugalhados e todo a transpirar, como uma personagem animada mal desenhada, com os pontos de interrogação a pairar à volta da minha cabeça, enquanto me tentava preparar para todos os cuidados e responsabilidade que teria por outro ser vivo, para além do meu gato. Sou responsável por assegurar que este pequenino ser humano não cresce e se transforma num perfeito monstro. Se a criança se tornar num parvalhão social – a culpa será minha! Se o bebé não conseguir situar Luxemburgo no mapa, culpem-me por não lhe dar melhor educação! E precisará de terapia... e isso, claro, será também da minha responsabilidade. Não faltam oportunidades para errar!
Lembro-me do dia em que o meu pai se sentou comigo e veio com a conversa dos pássaros e das abelhas; foi talvez a meia hora mais dolorosa e constrangedora das nossas vidas. Não posso fazer o mesmo a outro ser humano.
Mas talvez esteja a exagerar… Eu consigo fazer isto. Serei um excelente pai. O meu filho ou filha será criado como um cidadão às direitas, educado e honesto e não me odiará.
E depois imagino o bebé, ainda seguro nos confins do ventre da minha mulher, abrindo de súbito um olhito admirado, à medida que o pensamento lhe aflora a mente: "E se o meu pai não der conta do recado?"

I remember reading once that some fellows use language to conceal thought, but it's been my experience that a good many more use it instead of thought.
A businessman's conversation should be regulated by fewer and simpler rules than any other function of the human animal. They are:
Have something to say.
Say it.
Stop talking.
Beginning before you know what you want to say and keeping on after you have said it lands a merchant in a lawsuit or the poorhouse, and the first is a short cut to the second. I maintain a legal department here, and it costs a lot of money, but it's to keep me from going to law.
It's all right when you are calling on a girl or talking with friends after dinner to run a conversation like a Sunday-school excursion, with stops to pick flowers; but in the office your sentences should be the shortest distance possible between periods. Cut out the introduction and the peroration, and stop before you get to secondly. You've got to preach short sermons to catch sinners; and deacons won't believe they need long ones themselves. Give fools the first and women the last word. The meat's always in the middle of the sandwich. Of course, a light butter on either side of it doesn't do any harm if it's intended for a man who likes butter.
Remember, too, that it's easier to look wise than to talk wisdom. Say less than the other fellow and listen more than you talk; for when a man's listening he isn't telling on himself and he's flattering the fellow who is. Give most men a good listener and most women enough note-paper and they'll tell all they know. Money talks -- but not unless its owner has a loose tongue, and then its remarks are always offensive. Lembro-me de ter lido certa vez que alguns indivíduos usam a linguagem para dissimular o pensamento, mas diz-me a minha experiência que muitos mais a usam em vez do pensamento.
A conversa de um empresário devia reger-se por menos e mais simples regras do que qualquer outra função do animal humano. São elas:
Ter uma palavra a dizer.
Dizê-la.
Parar de falar.
Começar antes de saber o que pretende dizer e continuar mesmo depois de o ter dito pode meter o comerciante num processo legal, ou pior, num asilo, e o primeiro é um mero atalho para o segundo. Eu mantenho aqui um departamento jurídico e claro que é dispendioso, mas é para evitar que vá parar aos tribunais.
Compreende-se se estiver a cortejar uma rapariga ou a falar com os amigos após o jantar, que tenha uma conversa do tipo excursão escolar de Domingo, com paragens para colher flores; mas no escritório as suas frases devem limitar-se ao mínimo. Esqueça a introdução e a peroração e pare antes de chegar aos “entretantos”. Há que pregar sermões curtos para apanhar os pecadores; e nem os diáconos acreditam que aqueles devem ser longos. Dê a primeira palavra aos tolos e a última às mulheres. A carne está sempre no meio da sanduíche. Claro que barrá-la com um pouco de manteiga de ambos os lados não faz mal nenhum, se for destinada a um homem que goste de manteiga.
Lembre-se também que é mais fácil parecer sábio do que falar com sabedoria. Fale menos do que o outro indivíduo e ouça mais do que fala; porque quando um homem está a ouvir, não se denuncia, estando, ao mesmo tempo, a bajular o indivíduo que o faz. Dê à maioria dos homens um bom ouvinte e à maioria das mulheres papel suficiente e contar-lhe-ão tudo o que sabem. O dinheiro fala – mas nem sempre, salvo se o seu proprietário tiver o hábito de soltar a língua, e depois as suas observações são sempre ofensivas. Je ne m´aime pas. Je n'éprouve que peu de sympathie, encore moins d'estime pour moi-même; de plus, je ne m’intéresse pas beaucoup. Je connais mes caractéristiques principales depuis longtemps, et j’ai fini par m’en dégoûter. Adolescent, encore jeune homme je parlais de moi, je pensais à moi, j’étais comme empli de ma propre personne ; ce n’est plus le cas. Je me suis absenté de mes pensées, et la seule perspective d’avoir à raconter une anecdote personnelle me plonge dans un ennui voisin de la catalepsie. Lorsque j’y suis absolument obligé, je mens.
Paradoxalement, pourtant, je n’ai jamais regretté de m´être reproduit. On peut même dire que j’aime mon fils, et que je l’aime davantage à chaque fois que je reconnais en lui la trace de mes propres défauts.

Não gosto de mim. Sinto pouca simpatia e ainda menos estima por mim mesmo ; aliás, não me interesso muito por mim próprio. Há já muito tempo que conheço as minhas principais características e acabei por me cansar delas. Quando adolescente, jovem ainda, falava de mim, pensava em mim, estava como que cheio de mim próprio; tal já não acontece. Abstraí-me dos meus pensamentos, e a simples perspectiva de ter que contar uma história pessoal mergulha-me num tédio próximo da catalepsia. Quando a isso sou absolutamente obrigado, minto.
No entanto, paradoxalmente, nunca me arrependi de me ter reproduzido. Pode mesmo dizer-se que amo o meu filho, e que o amo ainda mais, sempre que nele reconheço a marca dos meus próprios defeitos.
