L: Is there anything you are particularly wanting to know?
H: We are interested in sustainable communities (around) the world, so we are very interested in Crystal Waters... Its operations and system.
L: There was a commune... Are you familiar with the word commune?
H: Commune... Yes.
L: So one person owned all of the land, which is 640 acres, and it sort of fell apart... It didn’t work. Then they got in a consultancy group, and they checked to see if it could be designed by permaculture principles. So they did that and they looked at aboriginal history, in case they were to damage anything....rainfall.... Use of the land, if there were any poisons used here. So they had a whole criteria checklist. If could it be affected by arial spraying, and no it’s not, it’s a small area so the planes won’t be spraying here... and other farmers. So they checked to see if it was possible to create a community that would sustain around, the ideal was around 350 people. That is a workable number for, like, an English village. So small English villages in England or Scotland around 350, in the old days it would be the baker, the dairyman, the candlestick maker, the blacksmith... There would be an economic balance so that one could feed off the other.
Our population oscillates from 200 to 250. So we’re a bit below, so you cannot really make a living just here yet. Because they built it with the idea that the 2.2 family would come to but it’s lots of 1 (single) parents. So, in the population here, 2/3s are single, or single with children. And only 1/3rd are, like myself, coupled, or coupled with a child. Only 1/3rd. So that means the economic balance is still trying to work itself out.
So, people come here and have a really high expectation it’s going to be a big food forest, but that will come with time. We’re very young... They talk about an entity, a community being reflective of a person’s age, and then we are 18. So we are like a teenager who doesn’t want to listen, doesn’t want to be told anything, doesn’t know what we’re doing with our life. As a community, it very much parallels that 18 year-old teenager, which is quite interesting. And if you can understand that, then you can kind of let it go and just wait until it’s ready to grow. And with age, the economic, the social, and the environmental will get balanced. At the moment, they’re out of whack.
So a lot of the things I can point out is the permaculture, the more environmental activities that have been put into place. So, there’s no guttering. And the roads slope slightly different ways. So when it rains, everything is a resource. So we want to keep it. It’s not a matter of putting it in a gutter, in a drain and shooting it off somewhere else, we’ve actually got the land sloped, the driveways and roads sloped so that the water runs off and is being fed evenly over the landscape.
The houses have been placed in plusses, so there’s groups and pockets of houses, and that is to help the social aspect. So that will encourage more social interaction. So over here, there is one, two, three, four on that ridge there. And they make sure that they had a buffer between houses, so there is a wildlife corridor strip. So it in unusual to come to a place where there is an increase in people and also an increase in wildlife. That is very positive, Normally, increase in people, decrease in wildlife. And diversity in wildlife as well. That’s actually increased. Because of our location, we’re relatively close to the coast and the hills, and we attract the bird life. So we get pelicans, swans, and things that live coastally come here as well. So there’s something like 220 different species of birds in Crystal Waters, and different ______, which is pretty magical to have that.
And each block is about 1 acre. So, where the domes are, and there’s a space there, through to the trees, is about 1 acre. All the lots are about that size. And the reason they did that is because you can create quite a self-sufficient garden with 1 acre. So, if you design it intensely, which is what permaculture is about, so you have your house, herd, vegetables, and orchard, and chickens, in an intense area, you can do pretty well with your own food supply. They really would have loved to have a variety of sizes, because what’s happening now is an acre is too big for some people. So what they would have liked but the government council would not allow was to have some quarter acre, half acre, one acre, 5 acres, 20 acres, but they were not allowed to. But that would have been a better way to go, because then you could have moved and... yeah. It would have also been good for people who wanted to have a go at farming at a commercial level, you need more than an acre.
There is opportunity to lease land here. 80% is land in common (common-use land). So it’s the roads, it’s the dams, it’s the little wildlife corridors, it’s up in the hills, and also the river-flats. So the way they did the design was they had an arial photograph and any area that was way too steep and not good for anything, they left. And the river-flats that would be very good for food production, they left. And they went through, and it’s called selection by exclusion. So they excluded different areas. And what they are left with were the house lots. So that’s how they chose where the house lots were. And when the people walked over the house land originally, if they felt something really nice, then they made sure it was left for everybody. So they are quite aware to do that.
Telephone, water and power were put in trenches predominantly underground, but I think they ran out of money, so some is above ground. But it’s underground and it’s all in the same trench. So that minimized the amount of impact and the amount of work that they did. So they didn’t rip everything all out with bulldozers, they just did only what was necessary.
The material for the road, instead of bringing material in, when they did the dam, they used that dirt on the roads. So they tried to not bring very much material -- they tried to work with what was here. So even with the spillways or with the overflows for the dams, it’s part of the road. So when we have floods or when we get lots and lots of rain, then the water actually comes over the road. So it’s all just a design element to minimize cost, to be more efficient, to use your own materials instead of importing all the time.
Ok, so what they did was layer over the different principles of permaculture. Are you familiar with the principles of permaculture?
H: A little. I know a little.
L: So it’s kind of like increasing biodiversity, poly-culture versus mono-culture, that style of thing. So with the diversity, creating more edge, so where there’s an edge, is the most life. So where there’s water, and where there’s grass, and where there’s edge, you get water life and you get grass life. So where the grass goes to the tree, where you get the trees and the grass, you get a lot more life. If you have a straight line, there’s THIS much possible edge. But if you do a curvy line, then there’s THIS much edge. So most of the things are curvy, and unusual shapes, and that’s to increase the biodiversity. So we’re talking about all the way to the microbes in the soil, as well as the insects to the bigger wildlife. The whole kit-and-kaboodle -- the whole lot.

H: I’m associate professor in university for environment education. (laughing) I research nature school in Japan. For kids or adults... youth.
L: So when we plant a tree, we try and make sure at least three reasons -- whether for bee, for bird life, for food, for mulberries, for shade, for beauty, we make sure there’s lots of reasons for doing it. There’s an increase in edible species here -- there’s olive trees here, and a lot of the bamboos are edible bamboos.
Most of the houses have a cabin or small house on them, because they recommend that you live on your land for one year before you build, to feel the drainage, the shadows, to really understand where the wind comes from.
So there are seventeen dams on the _____ . And the history of the land is that it was mulch back in the very beginning, so it would have beautiful timber, and they came in and took all this good timber out and then they had beef cattle and then they put some dairy cows, so they made pasture and when they used up all the goodness, they put it back to beef cattle again. So in the 18 years, many, many trees have been planted. So most of there trees are no more than 18 - 20 years old. There were no trees.
This is the rivers-flat land. It’s kept so that people can lease. And there’s orchards of citrus and pecans, and these paddocks here are for dairy for biodynamics. Are you familiar with biodynamics?
H: Yeah. Biodynamics.
We found many kangaroos yesterday.
L: Yeah... And there should be many out today because it’s cooler.
H: (to kangaroo) Hello.
L: So even in the land, we try to create as much biodiversity as we can. So what looks like a weedy mess, if we were to measure an area about a square meter, there would be something like 80 plus species of _____ and different sorts of species of grass, which is really ideal. And more and more diversity is happening. It used to be just all ladygrass and not much else.
Lots of the trees that are planted, there’s some conflict in Crystal Waters. Some believe just all rain forest, some believe just all permaculture, some believe only natives.
They help fix nitrogen, so they help develop the relationship in the soil. So these are all legumes, and drop-pods, and they reproduce very easily. So the problem for some people is that they can propagate very easily. So it can be a worry, so for some people that is a concern. And it’s just a big experiment. And they are recommending that you plant lots of wattles, and wattle is another nitrogen fixing tree, it’s a native Australian tree. And they now realize, or they now think, that the competition with the moisture, even though it fixes nitrogen, that it robs too much moisture. Because they used to say, plant whatever tree you want and then plant a wattle right beside it. And then chop the wattle back and use to mulch it and help it fix nitrogen. But now they say “no” that it takes too much moisture away. So everything is a continual experiment of how to do things. All a bit of a mystery.
Do you know this sticky horrible weed? It sticks onto your clothes, so watch out for it! We don’t know any use for it, we would love to come up with a use for it. It’s common name is “cobbler’s”. And do you know this ant?

L: Ouch, ouch. It’s (from) the family of wasps, so it actually stings with its bottom.
So they also planted, when they came, plants like this, which is also a nitrogen fixer, but it’s actually becoming a bit of a pest. So things that they did 15 years ago, they’re finding out, not such a good idea. But this particular one is a legume and it was planted to help with the nitrogen and build the soil. But what it does is just climb up over the trees, and covers the trees and just kills them.
So these paddocks here, the dairy group has had them just 6 years, and now are just full of woody, woody weeds. So the pasture improvement is very slow, but very good. And more and more they want to get into a rotation of a lot more flashing and the cuttings going back into the ground and hoping that the biodiversity increases.
So the three boundaries, it’s sort of boomerang shaped. One is the river, and there’s another river over the other side, and the third boundary is just the hills. And within that structure, there’s lots of hills, and up and down, and gets kind of confusing.
One of design elements that has been under debate whether it would have been better to move all the houses to the front. So that you could easily to walk everywhere. And you would only come out here if you were going to farm, or going for a walk. Because there are 7 kilometers of road, and you always seem to have to drive a car. A push-bike is really really hard work. And if you’re carrying things and a child.... So that is one disappointment, having to use the car heaps more than what was thought.
Strong permaculture is against hard-hooved animals. So there has been conflict and debate over whether there should be horses over here and cows. But the flip some of that is, is that they do some weed control, and control of the pasture. The other option is fuel-based -- tractors. In one way permaculture is saying yes, no hard-hooved animals but then to use tractors the damage of insects and frogs and things like that with slashers and mowers and stuff compared to animals.

So it’s only more recently, that the cows have been on here only 6 or 7 years, and just at the moment there’s a whole heap of teenage girls that love horses. Just in the last few years we have something like 40 horses over the property, but before that there was none. So very recent. The guy that owned the land originally was a horse breeder. So when everyone came here and did the design, he was asked to leave because of the horses and compaction and the hard-hooves. But it just goes around in a circle and now we have horses again.

H: How long do you live in this area?
L: About 15 years
H: First……first?
L: No, probably about third wave of people coming
When they put the proposal to council, they did it all as a concept. And people just bought a plan, and the way they funded the project was people bought in, and then with that money they then did the subdivision and put the roads and did all the surveying and put the power, water and all that in. Which is quite unusual, because normally they would get a private entity and they would make money on the project, or they get some sort of funding from somewhere to do it, but this to purely self-created. The group that did the consultancy, they didn’t get paid money, they got a block of land that was all by exchange. And even the guy who owned the land, he was given lots of land -- no money exchanged hands for that. And what he did is that the people who had been living with him for a long time in the commune, he actually gives them land as well.

H: How do the residents get daily food?
L: Yeah, they get small percentage they will get from their own lots, but mainly shopping like everyone else. And there’s a little shop down in the village. But mainly very much, even though the general population wanted to do something different and come live here, it is really hard work and I think they go shopping. Everybody likes shopping. And it is a _____ like otherwise you just eat out all the time. So about once a week they go out and have coffee and cake and do shopping and social activities.

L: So this particular block is quite unusual in that it was very very carefully designed. So, he actually did do earthwork before and got really clear. So there is lots of swails ... are you familiar with the term swails? And lots of edible plants. So there’s sugar cane, mugwarts, avocados, humphreys, peaches, nitrogen fixers, cassavas, figs, lychees, tree raisons...designed very carefully. So this is his ____, so he’s made a big sun trap facing this way. Biggest species are here, and very low species are down there. And his house actually is will be over there, and he has 2 small veggie patches which will become part of his house. So this is just a little workshoppy space over here.

L: So this will be his workshop space. So at the moment he’s very strongly influenced by Japanese design with his work, so it’s all recycled materials, and he’s got a very small kitchen.
This is his kitchen. Very tiny. And he has a mattress on the floor for his bedroom. But this eventually just be another space and these pads out here he will build his house on. And this is all for the moment just workshop space.
Outside bathroom..very outside bathroom. So the water that comes out of the shower he’s gotta drain _____ so he’s gotta water plants. So he’s got gingers, bananas, taro, arrow roots, that will help tremendously. ...lemon grass, asparagus. So this lemon grass he can slash and can help use it as mulch, and he has done earthwork so that it is ____. So the moisture comes down and sits here so and when it does rain and will be feeding the trees. And this is all arrowroot, and he would slash all that and use it for mulch. So we pecans and custard apples. So, same thing, really big species coming down to smaller species. So it is a big solar trap. ....passion fruit, garlic chives, lemon thyme, cherry tomatoes... And then in these patches here, he mulches them up and puts sweet potatoes, watermelon, and rock-melon in between... grape vines. And because we’ve had bad rainfall for a long time, then we are all starting to fence off areas and grow veggies, because the wallabies and kangaroos are nicking everything. So this is a very interesting design.
We also have his ______ so the irrigation. This a grafter tree. See how this is root the stalk and this has been grafted onto there, so this is below the root stalk. So this is a very hardy, hardy plant -- the root -- but different fruit tree on the top.
34:30 It seems to be getting hotter each year, so people are starting to put shade on, so that we can actually grow vegetables in summer. So this is more picking greens, so zucchini, button squash, rockets, basil, potatoes, and corn over there...
One thing we tend to do is to have to bring in mulch, so there’s a big thing to try and create your own mulch. So the lemon grass enables Christopher to do that. And just in his little cabin, because of the heat, he’s put these strings to create a cool pocket in between. He doesn’t have that all year-round, in winter he rolls them up.
And all these trees are all edible species.
H: Do they eat them themselves or sell something, when they harvest?
L: Well, with an acre, and because of the diversity that we tend to plant on our acre, there’s not really enough to sell on. Maybe in the future, if people pool together, then they would be able to sell pecans and things, but he has 2 pecan trees, which is maybe enough for him and to share with his friends, but not enough to sell. This is a lemon myrtle, so this is for making tea.
These will be the biggest trees, because they’re all at the back, so mangos. And these trees are all very young. Some plants are here to help fix nitrogen, some are here for mulch, but mostly they’re here for eating.
One thing that is interesting is that, something like this is a native tobacco, not real smoking tobacco, but it is a weed, that by council rules we should take out, but by permaculture belief system, it is just part of the growing process. So the earth wants to be covered -- so first off it will have cobbler’s ____ and grasses, and eventually it will have pioneer species that will come and create some shade for other trees to come up. And it’s (tobacco weed) is very good feed for lots of the native birds. So as long as it doesn’t get out of control, it definitely has its use. They’re also bringing up nutrients and you cut them up and use them for mulch, so it’s providing a different food source for the soil. So it’s quite a different approach than from council, who would just come and poison.

39:33 So in Crystal Waters we have one acre like this by Christopher, and then we have another acre, one-half -- nothing else. So it’s up to the individual what they choose to do. So there’s 2 layers of permaculture: the macro (roads, dams, materials, water system), and there’s the micro -- what an individual chooses to do on their lot. You can see now the potential of what can be done.

H: How about the electricity generation?
L: When they did the subdivision 18 years ago, solar power was not looking so good. The panels only had a 7 year life back 20 years ago. Now it’s changing where it’s 25 to 30 years, what we do we just use the main electricity. Some people are choosing to take the system the feeds back into the grid. Some people have 2 systems: one that’s solar and uses batteries that’s independent, and one where you fit into the grid, but it’s very very expensive.
The water system is tanks, so they actually take water from the rivers. At night it gets pumped up, and gravity feeds it through the rest of the day. Most everyone has main water tanks on their house so everyone is responsible for that line water.
The thing with the power is that there’s a couple of houses that are fully solar, but most houses are on the main electricity. And where it would be triple phase (a 240 volt 3-phase tower), there are lots of cables going in, so you can turn everything on. Some things like welding chains use lots and lots of electricity, but we are under orders as to only owning single phase. And if you turn absolutely everything on, then you will blow a fuse. It is to keep you mindful of how much power you are using.
Probably for me, some disappointment is that we as a community have a body of potentially 80 families, but we have not been creative in keeping up with the times to experiment to be innovative. The governing structure is a body corporate, so we pay money to our own governing council, and they look after our roads, dams, and other problems. So it’s like there’s an Australian government, then a Queensland government, then there’s a local council and then a body corporate as well.
Generally it’s very difficult to get an income here. Peoples’ income dropped dramatically when they came to live here. So that’s a shame, but maybe that will change as we get different people coming in here.

L: Yeah, so this is the work campground... amenities and there’s a bunkhouse there.
45:50 H: Does your community have its own fund (that it controls)?
L: Well, through the body corporate they have a budget, so we pay something like $800 - $1000, say $1000 and there are 80 (families), so they have an $80,000 budget for the year. And that has to go to weeds, slashing, dams, road maintenance, administration.
H: How did you get the income?
L: Many things... I do tours... I also (work at a school here) and work as a schoolteacher. (Adults who want to study) Science, geography, and environment come and they do water quality testing and learn about alternative energy, or they make solar ovens and things like that. I do tours to show here to show what’s happening here. I also do some office work for a day a week. I have a 5 year-old and I was teaching until I had a child.
(change of topic) Most things here are small and _____ . So, here some alpacas. That’s for their fleece. The lady does spinning and knitting.
H: So every residence pays for the community budget.
L: Yes.
H: How much pay the community every year?
L: It depends... $800 - $1000 I pay to the body corporate. I also pay to the council, so I have 2 fees. And that’s for roads, fires and other things. So, the community makes us pay that money, and there’s a sinking fund that puts aside money for big projects like the reticulated water system, in case we need to get new pumps.
(change of topics) So this is an example of some of the land that has been left for potential food growing. And a group has leased it and they’ve set up a bamboo nursery.
So we’ve pretty well seen the block. We’ve been to the roundabout and seen nearly both directions now of Crystal Waters. And there’s lots up in there where the road doesn’t go. This is an (Australian) wattle ... funny flower. And this is the one that has the pods. There are many many types of wattles, and this is one -- they have the pompoms.
And this is land they have leased, and they have to pay the body corporate when they make any money on it. So they try and encourage people to make some money, and then they pay a small percentage to the body corporate. Persimmons... very Japanese tree... We say we can grow many many things. So we figure there are 30 different bamboos here..

L: No, these are from Japan and China. So they are thinking for furniture, because eventually, Australia will not have enough timber. So this group is planning ahead, thinking bamboo will be more valuable. At the moment, the market is too competitive, because the Asian countries can do it for nothing! But this is a running bamboo here, the one that they use for the musical instruments, and they are controlling it by having a moat.
H: Yes, this is important.
L: Yes.
And these other ones are edible and it has a good flavor, and they harvest this one and sell it at the market.
H: Do you eat bamboo shoots?
L: Yeah, yeah.
H: In early spring?
L: Uhhhh,,, yeah.
H: Wow, this is like Japan.
L: Yeah, (some people) have their weddings here because they feel it is so beautiful.
So, ....... 2004, this one.
55:41 This is one of the creek systems that we have, and it’s very low. Because Crystal Waters has been here 20 years, and in that time the land around is starting to sell more. So our population is 200, but maybe on these river systems is now 600, or 400, I don’t know. So a lot more people using the water. It is something we have to think about and plan, other ways of getting water instead of taking them all from the river systems. When you take the 80 rain water tanks, that water would have eventually gone into the creek. So, we’re taking from the creek and we’re stopping water from going into the creek as well. Impact of humans.... But it is listed as running, but it hasn’t been running for a while.
H: You know we use this bamboo skin for wrapping.
L: Yeah... We are still very much a throw-away society here in Australia. Generally speaking people are so extreme, so no plastic and only glass and everything wrapped in bamboo, or they’re the opposite -- everything in plastic and throwing-away. We need to get in the middle somewhere.
H: Same situation in Japan.
58: 05 L: So I think the common land is not being used as much as it could be, yet. Because people are still building their houses and families. To look after 1 acre is a lot of work. So we’ll go to my house. And it is looking real good because I have tours there with school children. We started to make a natural swimming pool, but everything else we have no time. The mulching, the orchard.... I’m surprised how much work is involved. And once we had a child it has even changed again. We lived in Brisbane where we had a 1/4 acre, and a 1/4 of an acre you can maintain very easily. I need a lot more time to do all the work around here, as well as get an income.
Is it funny to come here and see bamboo?
H: Yeah, that is funny.
L: This particular one they send down to Antarctica to help with communications, for the wind and the storms there. Apart from these and the bamboo shoots, it’s not a getting used a lot yet. They make tomato stakes and such, but there is an issue with the longevity with borers, and trying to come up with a natural way that the bamboo will last.
1:00:54 So, we have a body corporate, and we have one other group in Crystal Waters, and it owns the camping ground, the visitor’s area, and it owns the village greens, where we will go after my place. That’s where the shop is, the cafe, and those buildings. So, the original idea was that when you bought in, you were gifted shares in the co-op. So you were a part of a cooperative. It (the reason) was 2-fold: one for social, and the other for business potential -- you could set up a little shop there. The little bakery is there.... He makes the sourdough bread. So if you wanted you could have a little shop down there, and that money would go to the co-op. So that is another entity that we have within the Crystal Waters structure.
And there’s a lady that’s really keen on miniature horses.
So for jobs here, there’s some people that work away that maybe work in the mining industry, so they are here for a week and then away for 2 weeks, there’s some that live in Brisbane that maybe work for 3 days a week and have their families here and stay down here for a night. I believe the average age of the owners is about 45.

H: Our age. I am 43 years old. Almost the average for here.
L: I am 46.
A lot of the dams are really low. We really need some good rain.
1:05:03 The other interesting thing that is evolving is peoples’ definition of permaculture.
Just up in the hills on the left up here is Derek, and he’s in his 80’s, and he was living some time in England and some times in Australia, but he swails all his lots, and he has mainly planted timber trees. And he has a small veggie patch and a few fruit trees, while other people have all fruit trees. So for him it creating that can be for future generations.
....... Are you familiar with branddirt?
H: No.
L: It is where you use a certain type of dirt, and there is that certain type of dirt in Crystal Waters, and you add a tiny bit of cement, like 3-5%, and then you put up some helmwork and you ram it down in there, take the helmwork away and then you have a wall.
This is our very messy house. So this is the west, and in the west we get a very strong wind, and the setting sun. So on this aspect we have put tall trees, and that also helps because there is a gully down there to bring the wildlife through here. The house has just has small windows on this side and this overhang, to protect it from the westernly conditions. And this is our north side over here, so we have most our glass, verandas.. So we are in the process of building a swimming pool, the idea being that the plants will take up a lot of the extra nutrients. And the darker part over there is the swimming hole.

So we also have slow____ . They are to energize the and oxygenate the water. And the depth of the water is 3 1/2 meters. So very deep to keep the water cold, and the water can move around. If it is too shallow, then it can heat up. So in the water is fish and frogs and snakes, and we swim with them.
H: (speaking about the pool and its heating.)
L: So the water comes up and it does a figure 8.
H:Is this rain water?
L: This is pond water. .... We’ve not had it in long, and the water has been sitting there 2 years. So we need to get more plants, and we need to have this running more so it will fill up that. As you can see we haven’t finished. Over here we’re going to make a beach, where the bigger rocks are we’re going to fill that up with sand, and then put mulch around the rest. Peter’s still working on drains and building rockwalls and he’s going to put steps here. So, big job... 2 years..... in between jobs and family...
H: Big work.
L: Most of the houses have solar panels. This house has been designed so that in the winter when the sun is lower, the sun comes straight in through the windows and hits those walls inside, so it’s designed for warming. And then we have a veggie patch and then we go into an orchard. So this is a kind of skinnier block. So it’s kind of a more textbook-permaculture design... So these are all different herbs... and there’s a crayfish pond... and there’s a solar panel on the cabin, and that pumps the water around.
And also, below that is the gray water system. So all our toilets and shower waste comes through. In the first container it is full of worms, and it is sloping this way so the water will come through. In the second container down the hill slopes this way and it is full of sand, so the sand filters it. And the third, you can see the top of that black round thing, that’s just the water tank. And that’s also connected up with the (solar) panel that pumps it around to our orchard. So this composting toilet system you would want the liquid, not solid, so the amount of liquid that’s flushing through, it takes all the nutrients with it. So a wet composting system we’re using water -- a dry composting system you’re letting it rot down and you’re take the solid waste out and use as compost. But for this one, the goal in the water.
So then we have water chestnuts.
1:13:33 This is an egg-laying chook (chicken) and you can get meat chooks. They’re different sorts. So we just had them in a chook tractor, so they have lots of green ticks.
In this orchard, we have half of it setting up our food for us, and half is for just citrus. Citrus, pecans and macadamia nuts grow really well here. So this half is more just to walk through and pick (what you want), so there’s passion fruit, mangos, lychees, a whole heap of different things, and there’s chickens in there as well, and they are helping with manure.
So this one is just so we can move it around, and they can get lots of grain to eat, and as you can see if you leave them alone, they totally weed an area for you.
1:16:05 And the visitor’s area is just through there. It’s interesting how the land falls back on itself. So eventually when there is more of a canopy, we will plant more of an understorage. At the moment we just have some pineapples and gingers, passion fruits dropping lots of... So it actually seeds itself and the leaves drop down and it creates its own mulch.

H: You know, we are coming from Kyoto, Japan.
Man: Kyoto is the best place to go for that?
H: Many ... zen gardens. Very good. We grew up in Kyoto.
Man: Got a little bit more to finish, getting close now. As soon as I can get my back (better). Been maybe 2 months now
H: Be careful. Big project.
Man: Yeah, big project to do part-time. Should be nice.. because when we finish we can do the garden, and the planting, which is the part you get a lot of satisfaction, when the project is being completed. We’re lucky to have such a beautiful setting with the natural forest behind.
H: Did you bring lots ... anywhere?
Man: Yes, we brought them in, yeah...
There are some places in there where Concrete Works, where they get the gravel, they sift for sand, and the bigger rocks are left behind, and they don’t really care about them -- it’s a by-product usually. But I can go down there and pick the better rocks. There are a couple of places like that. Some of the orange rocks -- that’s basalt -- that comes from up on the “black ol’ “ range. Usually most of that I’ve been collecting for years, from road works where they just bulldoze the rocks out of the way. Lucky to have the resource because if you had to buy them, it’d be very expensive. But if I go down to Concrete Works, $20 I get a full supply of rocks. The utility is very cheap.
H: So how many trucks?
Man: I don’t know... Probably hundreds. Huge number. The rocks that were here... We had a pond before. We landscaped that with these, but it was a clay pond and when we dug it up I really used these rocks up here, but I was collecting those rocks for a few years, when we first moved here. Too old for that now!
What sort of work do you do at home?
5:06 H: My work? Associate professor in a University for environmental education in Japan. And she is a graduate student.
Man: So would you have things to see on the Gold Coast, or is the Gold Coast more the holiday part of your trip?
H: Yes, holiday, but these 2 days are research.
Man: Have you seen some interesting things?
H: Yes. We are very interested in sustainable communities in this area.
How long do you live in here?
Man: 12 years.
H: What is your occupation?
Man: I’ve done a number of (jobs)... I used to be a phys. ed. teacher, but not since we left Brisbane. I haven’t done that for probably 14 years. But since moving here I’ve been working with lots of different jobs. The Rammed Earth building, for building walls, I work with a friend John who’s a builder. I’ve worked there a number of years doing the Rammed Earth. Painting ... landscaping work ... and gardening. At the moment, I’m working with another friend who does concrete polishing ... with a machine, so you polish them to bring out the aggregates so it can come out looking like a polished granite thing. I’m only really just doing it to earn a living really, it’s not a passion. I’d like to do this sort (probably referring to the garden) of work but I think that as you get older it gets harder to do. Probably just too much physically to do this full-time. But I like to do creative things.
On the other side of the bamboo through to where it becomes more narrow, it’s will be a sandy beach. Which will be quite nice. And then the rest will be a pathway, just a mulch pathway. And then we’ll do some more planting down on the bank to hold it together a bit more. It’ll be interesting when the water plants become more established.
H: Lotus.
Man: No, it’s the water lilies. Lotus are very beautiful, but they’re very aggressive. Might take over too much. Did you meet my little boy, Natty?
H: Matty? Yes, yes. Hi.
Man: Where are you staying on the Gold Coast?
H: Paradise Resort. There are many children. So many children.
Man: And what will you do? Beach... and nice restaurants... that sort of thing?
H: Yes, and pools.
Man: Be nice for children to grow up here. It will be good for their sense of adventure.

H: Ah, yes.

H: Yes, a good private university, Christian-based.
11:02 L: The walls and the floor are made from brushbox, which is a local timber, and the walls have been oiled, and the floor has an acrylic, and it has a really lovely pink color. So we would like to try and keep the light color. Most of the doors and windows are secondhand.
So this one is rammed earth. So they put up some wallwork on the outside, and then they mix it up, not very much clay, and it’s like decomposed granite. And then shovel it in, and then ram it down. And they keep adding, you can see the small panels. Once it is there, they can pull it all down, and straightaway it stays, and then it cures -- it dries over time. It has a small amount of cement in it.
Another man: Do they use rammed earth in Japan? Are there any old buildings with rammed earth?
H: Not so much.
Man: China -- that was what, China, wasn’t it?
L: What about the cobb style ... the earth style, it was more cobb.
H: Cobb.
L: So this in winter, the sun comes through and ......... (can’t make out what she is saying.)

L: A person who’s using an experiment to learn is Pat. He started off with 2 dairy cows. So, he started off milking, and then he introduced bulls. With the young ones he started to butcher, for their meat, and then producing milk, and then mate with the young ones, and even the dairy he ....Next door they have 300, so it’s a monoculture, just dairy -- big 100 acre irrigator, computerized. All chemical fertilizers. The farmer knows it’s not good but for money, the pressure, it’s the only option.
Where here, Pat is able to experiment. He has maybe a dozen girls (dairy cows) now. And across the road they’re building up to milk 3 times a day. The life of a cow for the milker is maybe 4 - 5 years, but the life of a dairy cow for Pat will be 25 years. Because he milks in the morning, and he puts the calf on, and the calf and the mother are very happy, and then he takes the calf away overnight so the milk builds up, and then puts the calf back on. So, he’s only milking once a day as opposed to 3 times. And because he’s using a beefbowl, we’re actually able to eat the meat that comes from that. Then he’s got bees as well, and he has a chook tractor like that John, but he has rectangular ones, and he has meat chickens in there. So they grow very quickly. He maybe has 55 in there one day and he moves them 3 or 4 times a day, so they get lots of grain and they manure as they go, feeding back into the soil. And then he also has about 700 egg-laying chickens. So in the paddocks he has rotating around, he has the cows moving, and the chickens coming, and the bees. He is not so much with plants, but with animals as an integrated system. And using vitaminix, so he adds a bit of rock____ and some 501.. That’s about all he’s doing. And the increase in the plants just themselves, the clovers and the grasses and other plants are coming without him introducing it at all. Quite amazing. So he’s only had the egg-layers now for 2 - 4 months. So it will be interesting (to see) how the system works eventually.
H: Thank you very much!
8:30 L: So that’s monoculture. Big irrigator -- very different. So you can see the thell grazing and the chickens, and the dairy cows, and this here is the market garden. So it is organic, but not permaculture because it would use more mulching. But because of the commercial setup, it’s not all lettuce -- he does lettuce, corn, and tomatoes, so he swaps it around.
H: Now, our fields are this type ... not permaculture.
L: Permaculture has more trees in the system. Providing more mulch and more feed. And I think he wants to do that, but he is 55...
See the chickens for cell grazing? So there’s a run in the middle, and then the cows can access water in the middle. And where you see the dark green, that’s where the chickens have been, and they’re fertilizing the paddocks. He would like to get more trees in, but it’s just time and money. He needs your university to come and help him! So the farm is producing honey, chicken meat, beef, milk, yogurt, cheese, eggs (like 60 dozen a day). So, he has a very long day -- he starts at 5 in the morning and goes to bed at 10 o’clock at night, every day.
12:20 Most of the houses are on the north, they get good sunlight for growing. This here is on the south, so it is set up as a wood lot, so this is many types of mixed hardwood. They grow it and harvest it every 5 years. They are timber for making houses.

L： 何か特に知りたいものはありますか？
H：世界中の持続可能なコミュニティについて関心があります。その意味でも Crystal Watersのことが知りたいのです。オペレーションやシステムのことを・・・
L：もともとここはコミューンでした。コミューンという言葉はご存知ですか？
H： コミューン、ええわかります。
L：ある人がこの約２５９ヘクタールの土地を持っていましたが、行き詰まってしまいました。で、この土地をpermacultureの原理に基づいて利用することが可能であるかどうかをコンサルタント会社に相談しました。それに、アボリジニの歴史も考慮して、彼らに何か悪い影響が出ないか、雨量、過去ここで農薬（毒物）を使っていたどうか、など多くの項目について調べました。この地域における空中散布の影響も調べましたが、ここは小さな地域ですから、空中散布はしないと判断しました。次に、ここで約３５０人ぐらいのコミュニティを作ることが可能かどうかを検証したのです。３５０人という数は昔のイギリスやスコットランドの村の規模として適当なサイズだったのです。パン屋、ロウソク屋、鍛冶屋などがあって、村の中での経済的なバランスが保たれ自給自足が成立していました。
我々のコミューニティの人口は２００人から２５０人の範囲で変動しています。まだ理想な人数より少ないですから、ここのコミューニティだけで自立した生活はできません。
両親と子供二人という平均的な家族を基準としてCrystal Watersが創立されたのですが、今の時点では、片親世帯が多いのです。全体の２／３が独身、または子持ちの片親。１／３程度が、私も含めて、子持ちか、子供のない夫婦。ですから今はまだ経済的なバランスをどうやって取るかを模索しているところです。
ここにやってくる人は、ここが大きな食料宝庫（big food forest)になると期待していますが、そうなるには時間がかかります。ここはまだまだ成長段階です。年齢１８歳ぐらいのコミューニティです。まさに話を聞かない、他の人から何かを言われるのが嫌い、これからの人生をどうやって生きるのかがまだわからない、ティーンエージャーそのものです。そう分かった上で、直接指導するより、成長を見守るのが必要です。歳を取るにつれて、経済・社会・環境がバランスが取れてくるのです。今はまだ不均衡な状態です。
パーマカルチャーについて多くのことをお話しできますが、ここで実践されていることは単なる環境活動以上のものだと言えます。樋（とい）がありませんよね、全てが貴重ですから、雨が降れば、それを樋を通してどこかに流してしまうのではなく、自然に任せます。庭やガレージが水に浸かったようになってもやがて水は周りの地形に沿った形で自然に引いていくのです。
住宅は十字の形をした集合住宅です。これは住民達が交流できやすくしています。あの高くなったところには１・２・３・・４軒の家がありますね。家と家の間に緩衝地帯があるように、そこに野生動物地帯を作りました。ここでは人の数が増えると野生動物増えることになります。普通なら人が増えると野生動物は減るのですけれどね。野生動物の 種類も減ることが多いですが、この比較的海に近い丘陵地に、ペリカンや白鳥などもやってくるのです。Crystal Watersには２２０種類もの鳥がいます。これはすばらしいことですね。
一軒あたりの敷地面積はほぼ１エーカーです。木立の中に住宅と、たっぷりしたスペースを取るとほぼ１エーカーになります。自給するための効率よい農耕地帯を作り出すことができる大きさが１エーカーなのです。パーマカルチャーの概念をしっかりザインをすると、（１エーカーの中に）家を建て、家畜小屋、野菜畑や果樹園を作り、そして鶏を飼うとして、ほぼ自給が可能になります。しかしこれからは色々なサイズの土地区分にしたいと考えています。実際、１エーカーが大きすぎる人もいるのです。１／４エーカー、１／２エーカー、１エーカー、５エーカー、２０エーカーなどの土地区分で（地方）政府の許可を得たいと考えています。現在はまだ許可されないのですが、この方がより良い方法だと思っています。農業を本格的に、商売としてやっていきたい人には１エーカー以上が必要になりますから。
ここでは土地をリースすることもあります。Crystal Waters 全土の８割が共有地です。共有地には、道路、ダム（堰）、野生生物地帯、丘陵、川沿いの平地などです。ここをデザインする時にまず地形を航空写真で撮って、利用するのが難しい区域と作物の耕作に良い川沿いの平地とを選別しました。Selection by exclusion（除外による選択）という方法を通して土地を分類しました。最終的に残った土地は住宅地としました。人々がここに最初にやってきた時、この自然の素晴らしさを感じ、その素晴らしさをみんなのために残しておくことが大切ですし、そうすることがみんなにとっての喜びになるのです。
電話・水道・電気は地下に通す努力をしたのですが、資金が足りなくなり、地上に出ている部分もあります。一つの溝の中に敷設して、できるだけ自然のままで目立たないようにしてあります。ブルドーザーを使った作業も必要最小限にとどめるようにしています。
道を作る時も、材料を持ち込むことはしませんでした。ダムを造った時も、道の土を固めてつくったのです。できるだけここにあるものを使おうということです。ダムの排水溝も道の一部になっています。雨が一杯降って洪水になると、道に水が流れることになるのです。何もかも外部から持ち込むことなく、それを最小限にしてこの地形を利用して費用を最小限にとどめるデザインをしていくのです。
ここではpermacultureの理論を積み上げていったのです。この理論はご存知ですか？
H：少し知っています・・・
L：生物の多様性を確保する、つまり同一作物の栽培でなく、できるだけ多種類の作物を栽培するというようなことです。多様性はより「側面・利点・接点」（edge）を増すことになります。水の流れる場所、草の生えている場所がもしまっすぐな線であるなら、edgeはこれぐらいのものですが、もしそれがカーブしているなら、これぐらいになるのです。ですからカーブしているとか、普通でない形というものからより多い多様性が生まれてくるのです。多様性とは土の中の微生物や小さな昆虫から大きな野生動物まで一切合切を意味しています。
さて、ドライブを続けましょう。
あなたのお仕事は何ですか？
H：大学の環境学の助教授です。日本の中だけです・・子どもや若者・おとなの自然教室を運営しています。
L：木を植える時、少なくとも３つの理由を考えます。みつばちや鳥のため、食料のため、木陰を作るため、景観ためなど、できるだけ多くの理由が考えられるようにするのです。食用になる品種を増やす傾向があります。オリーブや食用の竹をたくさん植えてあります。
住宅地の殆どには小屋がありますね。家を実際に建てるまで、小屋に生活して、一年間土地の様子を見るようにアドバイスしています。その期間に水の流れ具合、木の陰の様子、風の吹く方向などをチェックするのです。
Crystal Waters の土地の歴史を振り返ると、もともとここは奇麗な森林で覆われていたのです。立派な材木を切り出したあと、肉牛と乳牛の牧場となりました。その後、牧草が乳牛の生育に十分ではなくなり、肉牛のみの飼育になりました。私たちがここにやってきてから、この１８年に数多くの木を植え、今このあたりにある木の殆どは樹齢が１８から２０年ぐらいなのです。その前は木は殆どなかったのです。
ここは川沿いの平地です。貸すための土地として確保されています。向こうは柑橘類とピカン（ナッツ）の果樹。そこの小屋（paddock）は乳業のbiodynamics（生物力学）のために作られています。Biodynamicsはご存知ですか？
H：はい知っています。
昨日はカンガルーをたくさん見ました。
L：そうですか。今日は涼しいので、たくさん見るかもしれませんね。
この土地で、我々はできるだけ多様性を取り入れようとしています。ただの雑草だけに見えるかもしれませんが、１平米の土地をよく見ると、８０種類以上の微生物（？）や草があるのが理想ですね。今も多様性が増しているのです。以前はladygrassばかりで他にはほとんど何もなかったのです。
Crystal Watersに多くの木が植えられてきたのですが、どんな種類の木を植えるかには議論のあるところです。ある人達は全て亜熱帯の木にするといい、permacultureの原理通りに従うという人もあり、またオーストラリアの自生植物にするという人もいます。
植物 は窒素を固定し土壌改善に役立ちます。これらは豆科食物でとても繁殖力が旺盛です。実はあまりにも繁殖するので、心配に思う人々がいるほどです。大きな実験をしているとも考えられるのです。
一方オーストラリア原産のアカシア(Wattle)を植えることが勧められていました。この木は窒素を固定するのには有用ですが、他の食物に影響を与える程湿気を採りすぎるということがわかってきました。以前はどんな木でもそれを植えたらそのすぐ横にアカシアを植えるようにといわれていました。アカシアを切り倒して根囲い(mulch)をすれば窒素の固定には有効ですが、現在ではあまりにも湿気を吸収しすぎるので、これは行われなくなりました。このように何事を行うにも実験が継続されているといえるのです。まだまだ解明されていないことが一杯あります。
この雑草、「ひっつきむし」分かりますか？服にすぐにくっついてしまうから気をつけて！ここに何の用もないような雑草です。「Cobbler’s」と呼ばれています。何か利用方法があればいいんですけど。この蟻もご存知ですか？
H：うわぁ、大きい蟻がいる。
L：いたい！ジガバチ科に属する蟻ですので、お尻で刺を刺します。
１５年前にこのような植物を土壌改善のため植えたんですが、結果的にあまり良いアイディアではなかったようですね。これも窒素固定する豆科食物ですが、木を這いあがって生長し、木を枯らすこともあります。
この辺のパドックは、乳牛用に作られて６年たっていますが、雑草だらけです。牧草地改善は進んでいますが、とても時間がかかりますね。多様性を増加するために有効な方策を考えようとして多くの模索が続いています。
三つの境界線がありますね、土地がブーメランのような形になっています。一つ目はここの川で、二つ目は向こうのもう一つの川で、三つ目は丘陵です。境界線の中でも色々な丘陵があって、ちょっと分かりにくいかもしれません。
デザインを考える上で、住宅地を前方にするのがいいかどうか、目下議論されています。農場に行くにも、散歩するにも、どこにでも歩いていけて便利です。ここは７キロの道路があって、普通の自転車で移動するのは大変疲れるのです。物を運んだり、子どもを連れていたら、車を運転せざるを得ない状態です。車に頼りすぎるのは残念ですね。
厳密なpermaculture理論は「有蹄動物」（hard-hooved animals）を受け入れません。そのため、Crystal Waters に牛や馬を入れさせるかどうかという論争ありました。ですが、牛や馬は雑草や牧草地の管理に貢献します。牛や馬を導入しなければ、他の選択は燃料を消費するトラクターです。permacultureは牛や馬をある意味では否定しますが、トラクターの他の動物（昆虫や蛙など）への悪影響を考えると、森の倒木の処理や畑を耕すことなどには必要だと思われるのです。

牛はここ６、７年前から導入され、最近馬が大好きな若いティーンエージャーの女の子たちが多くなって、Crystal Waters に馬４０頭ぐらいが飼われるようになりましたが、それ以前は一頭もいませんでした。この土地の元所有主は実は馬の育種家でした。この人は馬の所有者であったが故に、Crystal Watersの計画が持ち上がった時に、この土地を去ることになりましたが、現在は百八十度の転換をして、結局また牛と馬を飼うようになっているのです。

H：どのくらい前からここに住んでいらっしゃるのですか？
L：１５年ぐらい前からです。
H：最初から？
L：いいえ、たぶん三度目ぐらいの人が流入した時期だったと思います。
（市）議会に申し出た時、その提案はただの概念でした。企画を持ち込み、その企画の資金は参加者が持ち寄ったお金でした。その資金で測量や分筆をし、道路・水道・電線などを設置しました。これはとても稀なことですね。普段はお金を儲けるつもりの企業や他の団体から資金を出してもらうのですが、ここでは全て自分たちで作り出していったのです。例えば、コンサルタントをしてくれた団体には、お金を支払う代わりに、土地を提供したのです。土地の元所有主もお金ではなく、大きい敷地をもらいました。その人は彼と一緒にコミューンに永く住んでいた人々に敷地をゆずったのです。

L：何か質問はありますか？
H：居住者はどのようにして日常食材を手に入れますか？
自分の土地から少し自給用食料ができますが、殆ど一般の人と同じように買い物をします。外の村に小さなスーパーがあります。居住者はここにやってくる前には、食材は全部自給しようと思っていたのですが、そうすることは大変な作業ですし、いずれにしても買い物をすることになります。大体みんなは週に一回出かけて行って買い物やコーヒーを飲んだりの社交的活動をします。

L：この一角の敷地はとてもユニークで、細かい部分までデザインされています。始めに土木工事をしっかりやって整地してあります。Swailsがたくさんいます。Swailsってご存知ですか？可食植物がたくさん集まっています。サトウキビ、ヨモギ、アボカドの木、humphreys、桃の木、窒素固定する植物、キャッサバ、イチジク、ライチ、tree raisons・・・綿密によく設計されています。これからこの土地の所有主が建てた sun trap （太陽光エネルギーを保持する建物？）にお連れします。サイズの大きい植物はここで、小さいのは向こうの下がった所です。彼の家はそこにあって、そばに二つ菜園がありますね。この場所は小さな作業スペースのようになっています。
CD 29:36 L：こちらはテイトさんです。
Tate：ここは私の家じゃありませんけれどね！
L：ここはテイトさんの工作部屋の場所になります。今は日本の伝統スタイルから影響を受け、作業に取り入れようとしていて、台所は小さく、リサイクルされた材料を使用しています。
ここはさっき言った台所ですね。とても小さいです。しかも、床にマットレスを敷いてベッドルームにしています。しばらくすればここに家を建てることになりますが、今は作業場のようなものです。
トイレは屋外便所です・・・排水管はシャワーからここまでつながっていて、シャワーで使った水は植物の水やり用になります。ここにはショウガ、バナナ、タロイモ、アロールート（クズウコン））、レモングラス、アスパラなどがあります。レモングラスは刈ったら、マルチとしても使えます。（ちょっと聞き取れない。たぶん土工事によってレモングラスを利用するようである。）雨が降ったら水はここにたまって、木はそれを吸収します。これらのアロールートも刈って、マルチとして使われています。ピカン、カスタードアップル・・・ここも同じパターンが見られますね：上は大きい植物、下は小さい植物で、sun trapになります。パッションフルーツ、ニンニク、レモンジャコウソウ、チェリートマト・・・この菜園にもマルチを敷いて、サツマイモ、スイカ、ロックメロン、ぶどうの蔓も植えたりします。このところほとんど雨が降らないので、ワラビーやカンガルーが作物を食べにきます。それを防ぐために柵を巡らせています。とてもおもしろい設計ですね。
（灌漑のことあまり聞き取れない）これは接ぎ木ですね。この根はここに接ぎ木したんですね。根はとても丈夫で、上は果樹です。
CD 34:30 年々暑くなって来ているようですから、夏に野菜が作れるように日よけを作っています。この菜園には、ズッキーニに、ペポカボチャ、ロケット（花大根）、バジル、ジャガイモ、トウモロコシがあります。
マルチを大量に使いますから外部から持って来てもらうこともよくありますが、できるだけ自分で作り出す工夫をするのが大切です。クリストファーさんはレモングラスの利用によってマルチは自給できます。彼のキャビンには暑さよけのためにスクリーンが付いています。冬は巻き上げておいて使いません。
この辺の木は全部可食植物です。
H：収穫したら、自分たちで食べるのですか、それを売るのですか？
L：一つの敷地は１エーカーで、色々なものを植えているので、実は売るほどできません。将来、仲間が一緒になれば、ピカンなどが売れるようになるかもしれません。彼の二本のピカンからは、自給用と友人に分けるぐらいは収穫できますが、売るほどはありませんね。
これはレモンギンバイカです。お茶になります。
これらの木はマンゴで、将来一番大きくなるので後方に植えられています。まだ若い木です。ここに植えられている木の中には窒素の固定用やマルチを供給するためのものもありますが、殆どは食材になるものです。
ここにおもしろいものがあります。これはタバコですけれど、喫煙するタバコではありません、雑草です。Crystal Watersの地方議会は、この雑草は除去すべきだと判断していますが、permacultureの原理によると、自然にそのまま残しておこうとします。土壌が自然に覆われるには、まず草や雑草が生えて、木のために陰になったり、鳥にも良いえさになったり、土壌に栄養を与えたり、マルチになったりします。増えすぎない限り、このタバコも役に立つのです。地方議会はこれを農薬で除去しようとするのです、アプローチがずいぶん違いますね。
CD 39:33 Crystal Watersには、このクリストファーの（土地の）ような（よく計画された）１エーカーや他のタイプの１エーカー、半エーカーなどが存在します。敷地のエーカーをどうするかというのは世帯主が決めます。permacultureには二つのレベルがあって、一つはマクロ規模のインフラ整備：道路・ダム・機材・水道システムであり、もう一つはミクロ規模として世帯主が自分の土地で何をするのかを自由に決められる取り組みです。今後何ができるか、可能性が見えるてくることでしょう。
H：発電はどうされていますか？
L：土地を分譲した１８年前、太陽光発電設備はまだいいものではありませんでした。２０年前のパネルの寿命は７年ぐらいのものでした。今では寿命は２５～３０年ぐらいになっていて、Crystal Watersではそれをメインに使っています。普通に電力会社が提供する電気を使っている人もいます。独立した太陽エネルギーの蓄電システムと普通の供給される電気のシステム、二つを利用している人もいますが、とても高いものになります。
水道システムはタンクを使っていて、川からの水を利用してタンクに保存しています。夜にくみ上げてその重さが水の圧力となって水を供給できるのです。各個人がそれぞれのタンクを使っていて、自分の責任において水の供給をしています。
電気に関して、数軒の家は太陽エネルギーのみ使用していますが、残りの住宅は普通の電気に頼っています。 もしtriple phase (240ボルト 3-phase tower) を使うと、配線もたくさんあり、電気を同時にいっぱい使うことができます。溶接機などは電気をたくさん使います。しかしCrystal Watersでは single phase を使用するように言われています。電気製品を全部同時に使ってしまうと、ヒューズがとんでしまいます。電気を意識的に使うためにはこれは効果的と言えます。
Crystal Watersは８０家族が居住できるだけのコミュニティなのに、その数を維持する創造的な活動ができていないことが私にとって、とても残念です。管理の主体は 法人組織（body corporate ）で、この自治組織が道・ダムの管理や種々の問題解決に当たり、メンバーは管理費を払っています。管理の構造はオーストラリア政府、クイーンズランド州政府、地方議会それと管理会議（body corporate ）ということです。
ここで収入を得ることはなかなか難しいのです。ここにくると居住者の収入は激減します。残念なことですが、将来新しい人たちがやってくれば、状況は変わってくるかもしれません。

H： コミュニティとしての運営ファンドがあるのですか？
L： Body Corporate が予算を作り、居住者は$800~$1000を body corporateに払っています。$1000だとすると、８０家族かける$1000は年に$80,000の予算になります。そのお金は雑草駆除・伐採業務・ダムや道路の管理、運営費用などに使われています。
H： あなたご自身の収入は？
L：色々やっていますね。ここでツアーガイドとして働いています。教師として、地理、科学、環境学を教えたりしています。代替エネルギーの勉強、水質診断方法や太陽光調理（solar oven）などに興味を持つ人たちが私の生徒になります。他に週に一回事務室で働いています。今は５歳の子供がいて、教師はもうやっていませんけどね。
ここでやっていることは全て小規模で趣味のようなものです。このアルパカから作ったフリースですが、ある女性が糸作りから編み物まで自分でやっているのです。
H： 住人みんなが地域予算に支出しているのですね？
L： はい、そうです。
H：どれぐらい払うのですか？
L：事情によって異なりますね。私は $800~$1000ぐらい body corporate に払っています。councilにも払いますから、二つの納付金を払っているわけです。それが道路管理や消防などに使われる経費になるのです。コミューニティが支払ったものから一部は償却資金としてプールされ、水道網の整備やポンプを新しくするなどの大きなプロジェクトに使用されます。
(change of topics) これは食物生産の可能性を探るための土地です。今はあるグループがここを借りていて、竹の苗畑として使っています。
をほぼ一巡しましたね。ラウンダバウトにも行きましたし、Crystal Watersのほぼ両方向を見ましたね。道のないところにも色々なものがありますよ。これはオーストラリアアカシアです。ちょっと変わった花ですね。莢（さや）ができます。本当に多くの種類のアカシアがありますが、これはポンポンをがついていますね。
借地を借りている人も収入があれば body corporate にお金を払わなければなりません。ですから、土地を借りて収入をあげるようにと奨励しています。柿・・・とても日本的な木ですね。Crystal Waters ではいろんな種類の植物が植えられています。この畑には３０種類ぐらいの竹があります。

H： 竹はオーストラリアに自生していますか？
L：いいえ、これらは中国や日本から持ってこられました。オーストラリアも将来材木が不足することが考えられるので、家具の材料として使おうと考えられているのです。この土地を借りているグループは竹が将来貴重なものになると考えて計画しているのです。今の時点では、アジアからタダ同然の値段で竹材が入ってくるので、マーケットはとても厳しい状態です。この畑の竹は楽器に使います。竹の周りに堀を巡らして生育を抑制しています。
H：それは大切なことですね。
L：はい、その通りです。こちらの種類は食用でとてもおいしいのです。マーケットで売ったりしています。
H：竹の子を食べるのですか？
L：はい、食べますよ。
H：早春の時期に？
L：そうですね。
H：日本と同じですね。
L：そうですね。この風景がとても気に入って結婚式を挙げる人たちもいますよ。

L：これはここのクリークシステムの一つの小川ですが、水量がとても少ないです。Crystal Watersが設立されて２０年ぐらいになりますが、居住者がだんだん増えました。ですから、消費する水の量は多くなって来ました。Crystal Watersの人口は２００人ぐらいですが、この小川から流れてくる川の水を消費する外の人々を含むと、４００人か６００人か・・はっきりしませんが、それぐらいになりますね。川から水を取ることだけでなく、他の計画を考慮しなければなりません。雨水を８０タンク分ためれば、それが次第に川に流れ込むのです。川から取水すると同時に、川に流れるべき水を止めてしまっているとも考えられます。人間の影響ですね・・・これは流れのある川となっているのですが、実際はこのところ水は流れていません。
H：日本では竹の皮をラッピングに使うことをご存知ですか？
L：はい知っています。オーストラリアはまだ使い捨て社会ですね。一般的に言って、プラスチックはダメで、ガラスだけ、竹の皮で何でも包む・・そんな人もいれば、全てプラスチックを利用して捨てている全く逆の人もいる。その中間の考え方であるべきですね。
H： 日本でも事情は同じです。

L：共用土地はまだ十分に利用されているとは言えません。居住者達はまだ家を建てたり、家族が増えていく段階ですから、１エーカーを十分に使いこなすのは相当な仕事なのです。
これから私の家に行きましょう。よく子ども達をツアーで連れて行く、いい家ですよ。今はナチュラルプールを作っている所ですが、他のことには時間がありません。マルチ作りや、果樹園の作業・・・これらがいかに大変な作業か自分でも驚いています。子供ができて、また状況が変わりました。ブリスベーンにいた時に１／４エーカーの土地に住んでいたのですが、管理は簡単でした。収入を得るためにここでの作業を全てこなすには、もっともっと時間が必要です。
ここで竹を見るのはおかしいですか？
H： ええ、とても奇妙ですね。
ここにある竹を南極大陸に送って、そこの通信施設の風や嵐よけの囲いとして使われます。そんな利用方法や竹の子の収穫を除いて、ここの竹はあまり利用されていませんね。トマトの支柱などに使いますが、中が空洞であることで寿命に関しての問題があり、竹が長持ちする自然な利用方法を探っているところです。

Body corporateの他に、Crystal Watersにはもう一つのグループがあり、キャンプグラウンド、ビジターズセンターと、私の家の後に見に行く共有草地（Village Greens） を所有しています。店や喫茶店のある建物です。当初の考え方として、会員になったら（bought in）したらco-opから割り当て分をもらえるというものでした。co-op組織のメンバーなのです。co-opには二つのねらいがあり、一つはメンバー同士の社交目的、そしてもう一つば小さな店を経営するというビジネス目的です。あそこに小さなパン屋さんがあります。サワードーパンを焼いています。これもCrystal Watersの機構の一部です。
ミニチュア馬にとても興味を持つ女性もいます。
居住者達の職業についてですが、ある人はここから離れた鉱業の仕事などに就いて、２週間は仕事先で滞在して、１週間はここで暮らすことにしています。家族はここで暮らしていて、本人はブリスベーンで週３日働いて１日ここに戻るというような生活をしている人もいます。世帯主の平均年齢は約４５歳ぐらいだと思います。。
H： 私たちの年代ですね。私は４３歳です。ほぼここの平均年齢ですね。
L：私は４６です。
多くのダムの水位は非常に低いです。雨がしっかり降ってほしいものです。

人々のpermacultureに対する認識が変化しているという興味深い現象があります。
左向こうの丘の上にDerekという８０歳のおじいさんが住んでいます。彼は以前イギリスに住んだりオーストラリアに住んだりしていました。自分の土地を全てをswale（畝などの間の谷間）にして、主に材木用の木を植えました。小さな菜園と果樹を数本だけ植えたのです。他の人は果樹ばかり植えていたのですけれどね。彼は将来の世代のことを考えたのです。
Branddirtはご存知ですか？
H：いいえ。
L：あるタイプの土を使うことです。Crystal Watersにも独特のタイプの土があります。それに少しのセメント、３～５％位を混ぜて、型枠の中に押し込んで、型枠をはずせば、壁ができあがります。
これは私達の家です、ちょっとちらかっていますけれど。この方角は西で、強い風と西日が当たります。ですから、こちらの側に背の高い木を植え、あちらにあるくぼみ（gully）を通って野生生物がやってくるようにしました。西風を防ぐために、窓は小さくして、出っ張りをつけました。こちらの北側は大きい窓やベランダがあります。今は水泳プールを作ろうとしている最中で、周りの植物が栄養をたっぷり吸収出来るためにいいだろうと思っているからです。あそこの黒くなった所はプールの深い所です。

L：水を溜めてから２年間たっています。もっとたくさんの植物を植えて、もっとしっかり水をくみ上げて一杯にする必要があります。ご覧の通り、まだ完成していません。ここに大きい石と砂を入れて、それをマルチで囲んだ「ビーチ」を作ろうと思います。Peterが石の壁と排水溝を作りかけていて、ここに階段を作る予定です。２年がかりです・・・仕事や家事の合間にする大仕事です。
H：本当に大仕事ですね。
L：ほとんどの家には太陽パネルがあります。この家は、冬、太陽が低い時、窓から直接光が入って、内側の壁に当たる、つまり家を暖めるようなデザインになっています。次は菜園と果樹園ですね・・・ここ敷地はかなり細長いです。Permacultureの教科書的デザインです。各種のハーブ、ザリガニの池・・・キャビンの屋根に水ポンプを動かす太陽パネルが付けてあります。
下はトイレとシャワーの水を流す 家庭雑排水（grey water）システムです。最初のタンクにはミミズが一杯はいっていて、そこに排水が勾配を伝って入ってきます。次に、丘の斜面の下にある、砂が詰まった濾しタンクに入ります。砂がフィルターの役目をするのです。最後に、あそこの黒い丸い物見えますか？あれは水タンクです。そこも太陽パネルに繋がっていて、果樹園まで水を送っています。この堆肥化トイレシステム（composting toilet system）では固形物ではなく、液体が重要なのです。栄養物を含んだ液体と一緒に流させます。これが液体堆肥システム（wet composting system）です。固体堆肥システム（dry composting system)は、固体排泄物を腐らせて堆肥として利用します。ここでは液体堆肥が目的です。
ここに菱(water chestnut)がありますね。

これらは卵用の鶏です。肉用の鶏もいます。種類は違います。前まで鶏小屋に飼っていたので、緑の壁蝨（しらみ）がついている。(Seems strange, but I can’t think of what else she could mean.)
この果樹園での半分は自給用で、半分は柑橘類となっています。柑橘類、ピカンとマカデミアの生育は旺盛です。この半分は通りすがりに好きな果物をもげるようになっています。パッションフルーツやマンゴやライチ、色々ありますね。肥やしになるために、ここにも鶏がいます。
鶏はあちこちを動き回って穀類(grain)をたくさん食べることができ、放っておくと雑草も徹底的に食べ尽くします。

ビジターセンターはここを抜けてすぐです。ぐるっと巡り回って来て元の場所に戻れて面白いですね。将来、林冠（canopy）大きくなったら、下層植物（understorage）を植えるつもりです。現在は、パインアップル、パッションフルーツ、ショウガがありますね。自生しているようなもので、葉っぱが落ちて、自然のマルチに変わるのです。

H: 禅の庭園がたくさんあります。とてもいいですよ。私たちは京都で育ちました。
Man: もう少し完成するところです。もうちょっとです。腰が良くなってから終わらせます。多分今から２ヶ月ぐらいのはずです。

H: どこからか石（？）をたくさん持ち込んだのですか
Man: はい、たくさん外から持って来ました。 Concrete Works という砂利の会社では、ふるいにかけて砂取りますから、大きめの石が後に残るのです。副産物とも言えるものです。私はそこから良い石を選んでもらってくることができます。そんな場所が数カ所あります。オレンジ色の石は玄武岩で、それは黒い丘陵のあたりから取れます。石の多くはブルドーザーで石をより分けた道路の工事現場などから、数年かけて集めたものです。このような大きな石を買うとするととても高いですから、石の「供給源」があるのはとても助かります。Concrete Works に行けば、たった＄２０で石がいっぱい手に入ります。機材の代金などはしれたものです。
H: トラック何台分ですか？
Man: さぁね。数百台かな、大きな数ですよ。以前池があったのです。その池を取り入れて庭を造っていったのです。掘った時には土の池でしたが、ここにあった石を入れていきました。引っ越してきた頃に、数年間かかって石を集めたのですよ。でももう年ですからちょっと無理ですね。仁志さんはどんな仕事をされていますか？

L: 色々な試みをしながら学んでいるPatという人がいます。最初は乳牛２頭からスタートしました。搾乳を始め。次に雄牛を導入しました。生まれた子牛を肉牛用にしたり、雌雄をかけ合わせたり、乳製品を作ったりしました。
一方、隣に３００エーカー（？）のモノカルチャーの酪農場では、１００エーカーにコンピューター化された灌漑装置があり、化学肥料が使われています。農場主はそれが良くないことと分かっていますが、お金を稼ぐためのプレッシャーにはそうするほかないのです。
だがここでは、Patは実験を行うゆとりがあります。乳牛は１２頭ぐらいを飼っています。道の向こうの酪農場で日に３回搾乳します。通常乳牛の寿命は４、５年ぐらいですが、Patの乳牛は２５年にもなります。Patは朝に搾乳して、それから子牛を授乳させるのですが、これは母牛にとっても仔牛にとっても幸せなことです。夜に乳が溜まるように子牛を離す、という方法でやっています。搾乳は通常の日に３回ではなく１回だけです。And the babies just go to fertilizer (maybe she means the calves suck on formula milk instead of its mother's milk??).And because he’s using a beef pull, we’re actually able to eat the meat that comes from that.
蜂を飼ったり鶏トラクターを所有しています。ジョンのようなトラクターですが、Patのは形が四角です。肉用の鶏は成長が速いのです。約５５わの鶏をあちらこちらに移動させ、多くの穀物を食べさせながら土地に肥料を施させています。卵用の鶏も７００匹ぐらい飼っています。パドックの中では牛・鶏・蜂をそれぞれに動かしています。Patは植物にはあまり関心を示していませんが、家畜に関してはシステム化を図っています。Vitaminixや５０１を少し使っていますが、それぐらいが彼のやっていることなのです。植物は自然に任せた状態で、クローバーや芝生などが、植えたのではないのに、増えてきています。とても素晴らしいことです。卵用の鶏を飼ってまだ２～４ヶ月ぐらいです。今後このシステムがどう展開していくかはとても興味深いことですね。

L: あれは単式農法です。とても大きい灌漑装置を使ってpermacultureとずいぶん違いましね。あそこ鶏と牛のcell grazingが見られます。そこはマーケットガーデンです。有機栽培ですがマルチをたくさん使用するpermacultureではありません。商業用に考えられていますから、レタスだけではなく、トウモロコシ、トマトなどの転作をしています。
H: 日本の農業もこんな感じですね。permacultureではありません。
L: Permacultureのシステムには木がたくさん使われます。マルチや飼料をもっと使うのです。彼もそうしたいと思っているはずですが、彼ももう５５歳なので・・・
今そこに鶏のcell grazingが見えてますか？真ん中には 樋（とい）があって、牛が水桶から水を飲むことができます。ダークグリーンの所は、鶏がそこで放し飼いにしてあったので、土地が肥えている場所です。彼は木を植えたがっているかもしれないが、お金と時間がかかるだけです。あなたの大学からの援助が必要ですね！農場では蜂蜜、鶏肉、牛肉、牛乳、ヨーグルト、チーズ、卵（日に約６０ダース）を生産しています。彼の一日はとても長いですね。毎日５時に起きて、夜の１０時に寝留生活です。
