| English to Korean: VDay General field: Bus/Financial Detailed field: Other | Source text - English What is V-Day ?
V-Day is an annual, international campaign to stop violence against women and girls.
It started in 1998 in the USA and has now become a global movement, providing a way for concerned citizens to collaborate, unite and make a positive difference.
This year, people in over 130 countries are taking part, organising V-Day events in a total of 47 different languages.
V-Day events strengthen communities, increase awareness and raise funds which are donated directly to local organizations working to stop violence against women and girls. The vision is to create a world in which women live safely and freely.
The 'V' in V-Day stands for Victory, Valentine and Vagina.
What are “The Vagina Monologues” ?
The Vagina Monologues, first performed in 1996 by the writer Eve Ensler, were the inspiration for V-Day.
They are based on interviews that the writer carried out with over 200 women about their views on sex, relationships and violence against women.
This collection of experiences was first put together as a theatrical production to celebrate femininity and has since evolved into a movement to stop violence toward women and girls. It is a poignant, brave, sometimes hilarious and always moving experience for both the audience and the actresses.
Who is JWAU?
We are proud to make the Jeonbuk Women’s Association United (JWAU) the beneficiary of our V-Day 2010 event. JWAU has been at the forefront of eliminating all forms of violence and discrimination against women in Jeonbuk since it was established in February 1988. Its aim is to unite the power of women organizations working towards women's rights and democracy.
To date, JWAU has 10 member organizations and regional organizations representing the progressive women's movement in Jeonbuk.
JWAU’s goal is to build an equal society, free from institutional discrimination, in which women can enjoy equal rights to men and live with dignity and pride. JWAU is building a democratic society where one's political, economic, social and cultural rights are fully guaranteed.
