Glance back fifteen minutes before midnight on our twenty-four-hour journey, and we find ourselves on the threshold of a momentous geological event that has dramatically altered the course of recent human history. Mountains made by the crashing of the Indian continental plate into the southern flank of Asia, starting about forty millions years ago, may seem irrelevant to the story of man and his attempts to master nature over the last few thousand years. But historically the Himalayas have a lot to answer for.
Scientists think that the enourmous height of this dramatic range has played a vital part in controlling the earth's temparature. For millions of years massive monsoons have been formed by the cooling of moisture-laden air as it passes over the towering Himalayan peaks (see page 84).
