Comme tous les mammifères nouveau-nés, les lapereaux doivent localiser les tétines de la mère pour s’alimenter. Ils s’orientent grâce aux odeurs, et notamment grâce à une phéromone « mammaire » (le 2-méthyl-2-buténal) contenue dans le lait de lapine . Cette dernière déclenche instantanément le comportement de tétée.
Les chercheurs du CESG avaient identifié la phéromone mammaire en 2003 . Depuis, Gérard Coureaud, Benoist Schaal et leurs collègues ont découvert qu’elle favorise l’apprentissage olfactif du nouveau-né. Ils ont exposé des lapereaux de deux jours au mélange de la phéromone et d’une odeur nouvelle dépourvue de signification. La durée d’exposition - cinq minutes (mais 15 secondes suffisent !) - correspond à la durée de la tétée journalière. Ils ont ensuite testé la réponse des lapereaux à l’odeur nouvelle, présentée seule. Au début, rien ne se produit, mais après 24 heures, l’odeur nouvelle devient aussi active que la phéromone elle-même : les lapereaux cherchent à téter. C’est la première fois que la capacité d’une phéromone à conférer une signification à un autre stimulus odorant est mise en évidence chez les mammifères. Jusqu’à présent, les phéromones étaient considérées comme des déclencheurs de comportement ou des régulateurs de la physiologie. Au vu du cas du lapereau, elles apparaissent désormais capables de déclencher des processus cognitifs chez l’animal qui les détecte : l’exposition du lapin nouveau-né à la phéromone mammaire lui permet non seulement de téter, mais aussi, simultanément, d’extraire des informations de l’environnement afin de les utiliser ultérieurement.

Like all newborn mammals, rabbit pups need to find the mother’s nipples to feed. They use odors to guide them, and particularly a “mammary” pheromone (2-methyl-2-butenal) contained in the mother’s milk . This pheromone instantly triggers suckling.
CESG researchers identified the pheromone in 2003 . Since then, Gérard Coureaud, Benoist Schaal and their team have discovered that it promotes olfactory learning in newborns. They exposed two day old rabbit pups to a mixture of the pheromone and a new odor which had no significance. The length of exposure – five minutes (although 15 seconds is enough!) - corresponds to the daily nursing time. They then tested the response of the rabbit pups to the new odor presented alone. To begin with, nothing happened, but after 24 hours, the new odor became as active as the pheromone itself, and the rabbits tried to locate the nipple. This is the first time, in mammals, that pheromones have been shown to support the learning of another olfactory stimulant. Until now, pheromones were considered to be behavioral triggers or physiological regulators. In rabbit pups at least, they now seem capable of triggering the cognitive process in the animals detecting them. The exposure of the newborn rabbit to the mammary pheromone allows it not only to suckle, but also, simultaneously, to take clues from the environment for later use.
