Dla osób, którym historia kojarzy się z opasłym podręcznikiem i mozolnym "kuciem" zawartych w nim dat i faktów, te studia mogą być pewnym zaskoczeniem. Historia uprawiana (i nauczana) na uniwersytecie jest bardzo daleka od podręcznikowych pewników i poszufladkowanej faktografii. Wiedza, którą staramy się przekazać nie ma charakteru zamkniętego. Studenci mają szansę zetknięcia się z "gorącą" nauką, z badaniami jeszcze nie publikowanymi, z tym, co jest hipotezą, próbą nowego spojrzenia, przedmiotem dyskusji między historykami.
Większość czasu poświęconego na studiowanie historii zajmuje analiza źródeł - różnego typu tekstów i zabytków z interesującej nas epoki. Centralną kwestią w czasie tych studiów jest przyswojenie sobie umiejętności analitycznych - najpierw podstawowej "metody historycznej", a potem bardziej skomplikowanych technik badawczych, często czerpiących z dorobku innych dziedzin nauki. Jest to droga do samodzielności badawczej, do tego poziomu umiejętności, który potrzebny jest na etapie pisania pracy magisterskiej.
Studia w IH mogą być intelektualną przygodą - szeroka oferta zajęć, praca w małych grupach, bliski kontakt z pracownikami naukowymi, dorobek naukowy tych badaczy pozwalają na bardzo ciekawe spędzenie tych pięciu lat. Ale studia humanistyczne nie są taśmą produkcyjną, na której wmontowuje się studentowi kolejne podzespoły umiejętności i porcje wiedzy - wymagają one aktywnego stosunku do tego, z czym ma się do czynienia na zajęciach. Ostateczny pożytek wyniesiony ze studiów zależy w ogromnym stopniu od samego studenta.
Na nasz program studiów składają się:
Ćwiczenia warsztatowe. Są to zajęcia z poszczególnych epok - na I roku po jednych ćwiczeniach w każdym semestrze z historii starożytnej, w następnych latach po dwa ćwiczenia w semestrze z rozbiciem na historię Polski i historię powszechną - kolejne epoki to średniowiecze, epoka nowożytna (XVI-XVIII w.), XIX w., lata 1918-1945, oraz historia najnowsza po 1945. Jest to zatem 12 zajęć w ciągu trzech i pół roku.
Ćwiczenia polegają na wspólnej lekturze i interpretacji źródeł - są to zajęcia w formie dyskusji i udział w dyskusji jest podstawą oceny. Ich głównym celem jest wyrobienie umiejętności analitycznych. Zastanawiamy się nad autentycznością i wiarygodnością danego źródła, staramy się odczytać ukryte treści, wskazać kolejne warstwy tekstu itp. Można powiedzieć, że w przeciwieństwie do kursów szybkiego czytania, uczymy czytania wolnego - uważnego i wnikliwego, nie ograniczonego do powierzchownego uchwycenia treści. Chcielibyśmy, żeby ćwiczenia warsztatowe dawały przedsmak pracy badawczej, by wdrażały w taki tryb pracy, jaki będzie potrzebny przy samodzielnych badaniach.
W zasadzie ćwiczenia warsztatowe nie służą przygotowaniu do egzaminu. Na późniejszych latach są często silnie zmonografizowane - dotyczą jakiegoś wycinkowego problemu na przestrzeni kilkunastu - kilkudziesięciu lat. Przy takiej formule zajęć, staramy się pokazać jak te same wydarzenia i procesy można uchwycić korzystając z bardzo odmiennych źródeł (np. pamiętników, wierszy, artykułów gazetowych, raportów policyjnych, ilustracji itp.).
Tematyka zajęć jest zwykle bliska badaniom prowadzącego je pracownika czy doktoranta. Chodzi tu o pokazanie własnego warsztatu naukowego, co zwykle jest ciekawsze niż teoretyczne rozważania na temat pracy historyka. Ważne jest też, by temat zajęć był naprawdę interesujący dla samego prowadzącego, aby pytania, które pojawiają się w trakcie analizy tekstów na ćwiczeniach, miały jakiś związek z pytaniami naukowymi, które sam sobie stawia.

These courses may come as a bit of a surprise to all those who associate studying history with laborious cramming of dates and facts from a voluminous tome. The history we practise and teach at the University is far removed from textbook certainties or a fixed list of facts. The knowledge we try to impart is not closed in itself. Students have a chance to encounter cutting-edge science and research as yet unpublished; something that is still a hypothesis, an attempt at a new approach and a topic of discussion among historians.
Studying history is, most of the time, analysing sources such as various texts and artefacts relating to the period of interest. The main concern during these studies is acquiring analytical skills: initially it involves basic historical methodology, while more complex, interdisciplinary research techniques come later. It is a route to scientific independence and to the level of competence needed at the stage of writing the Master's thesis.
Studying at the Institute can be an intellectual adventure. A varied choice of classes, working in small groups, close contact with researchers and their scientific output – all this can make for very interesting five years. Studying humanities is not some educational production line designed to churn out pre-programmed graduates. It demands a proactive attitude to the coursework. The ultimate benefits to be derived from the course are largely dependent on the students themselves.
Our programme of study comprises:
Workshop Classes
These are classes in respective time periods: in the first year, one class per semester in Ancient History, in subsequent years, two classes per semester (one class in History of Poland and one in General History) with the following time periods studied : Middle Ages, Early Modern Era (16th -18th c.), 19th Century, 1918-1945, and Recent History after 1945. In total there are 12 classes spread over three and a half years.
The classes involve collective reading and interpreting of primary texts and are based on discussion, with participation in this as the basis for students' assessments. The main aim is to develop analytical skills. We consider here the authenticity and reliability of a primary text, attempt to uncover its true meaning and identify successive text layers, etc. As opposed to a speed-reading course, we could call it teaching the art of slow reading, attentive and careful, going beyond skimming the surface. We designed the workshops to offer a taste of scientific work, instilling methodology required in autonomous research.
Workshop classes are not actually geared towards exam preparation. Later on in the studies workshops are often decidedly thematic, focusing on an isolated issue on a timescale of one or several decades. With this formula we try to show how to tackle the same processes or events using very different source materials (e.g. diaries, poetry, press, police reports and images, etc.).
The subject matter of workshop classes is usually closely linked to the teacher's own research. This allows the teacher to show his or her own research skills, which is far more interesting than theorizing about working as a historian. It is also important in making the classes interesting to the teacher by connecting students’ questions during the class to those that he or she has poses in his or her research.
