Source text - English Rethinking Organics Thursday, Aug. 09, 2007 By SANJAY GUPTA, M.D. Few things make you feel better about your health than eating organic fruits and veggies. A diet high in produce is commendable enough, but organic produce? That's a double dose of virtue. What's less clear is how much good that virtue does you. Are there real benefits to going organic? If so, are some organic fruits and vegetables better than others? And how do you choose? One thing is certain: it's easier than ever to find organic produce. As demand for pesticide- and chemical-free foods has grown, the onetime niche product has gone mass market. Sometimes organic produce simply looks or tastes better, which for me is often reason enough to pay the higher price it may sell for. And sure, it makes sense to avoid pesticides as much as possible. At the same time, scientists have yet to document a definite, long-term negative effect of modern pesticides on our bodies, meaning that while organic foods do you no harm, they may not turn out to be as beneficial as you think. The evidence of nutritional advantages is almost as thin. Never mind the idea that organically grown foods fairly burst with vitamins that modern farming techniques drain out of crops. To date most studies have either shown no difference between organic and conventional produce or found very small pluses in the organic column, such as slightly higher levels of vitamin C or other antioxidants. Researchers at the University of California at Davis, however, have recently added to our understanding of hidden benefits in organic foods. In a 10-year study, the longest of its type so far, food chemist Alyson Mitchell and her team compared levels of two antioxidants--quercetin and kaempferol--in tomatoes. They found that tomatoes grown in organic fields yielded significantly higher amounts of these nutrients (an average of 79% and 97%, respectively) than their conventional counterparts.	Translation - Korean 다시 보는 유기농 식품 유기농 과일과 야채를 섭취하는 것만큼 건강이 좋아진다고 느끼게 해 주는 것은 그다지 많지 않다. 농산물을 많이 섭취하는 것만으로도 충분히 유익하다. 그렇다면 유기농산물 섭취는 어떨까? 유기농산물 섭취는 두 배로 유익하다. 그러나 유기농산물이 어느 정도 건강에 좋은가는 그다지 명확하지 않다. 유기농산물 섭취가 실제로 건강에 유익할까? 만일 그렇다면, 유기농 야채와 과일이 일반 식품보다 좋을까? 좋은 식품의 선택 방법은 무엇일까? 한 가지 확실할 점은 최근 들어 유기농산물을 쉽게 찾아 볼 수 있다는 것이다. 무농약친환경 식품에 대한 수요가 증가하면서 한때 틈새시장 상품이었던 유기농산물이 이제는 주류시장에서도 판매되고 있다. 때때로 유기농산물이 보기에도 좋고 더 맛있게 보여서 그 이유만으로도 값이 더 비싼 유기농산물을 사기도 한다. 특히 나의 경우에는 자주 그렇다. 물론, 유기농산물이 농약 사용을 최소화했다는 점도 의미 있는 일이다. 그러나 사실, 현대 농약이 장기적으로 신체에 미치는 부정적 영향에 대한 명확한 과학적 근거는 없다. 즉, 유기농 식품이 우리 몸에 딱히 해가 될 것은 없지만 그렇다고 우리가 기대한 만큼 몸에 이로운 것은 아닐 수도 있다. 유기농 식품에 영양소가 더 풍부하다는 증거는 희박하다. 유기농법으로 재배한 농산물에는 현대 농업 기술로 재배한 작물에 함유된 비타민이 아주 풍부하다는 생각은 차치하고서라도, 지금까지 대부분의 연구 결과를 보면 유기농산물과 일반 농산물 간에 차이가 없으며 설령 차이가 있다 하더라도 비타민 C 함량이 살짝 높거나 기타 노화 방지제가 살짝 더 함유되어 있을 뿐이라는 점을 알 수 있다. 그러나 최근 데이비스(Davis)의 캘리포니아 대학 연구진은 유기농 식품 안에 감춰진 장점을 밝혀 냈다. 식품 화학자 알리슨 미첼(Alyson Mitchell)의 연구팀은 토마토에 들어있는 케르세틴과 캠퍼롤이라는 두 가지 노화방지제 함량을 비교했다. 이들은 유기농장에서 재배된 토마토에서 케르세틴이 평균 79%, 캠퍼롤이 평균 97% 검출되 유기농 토마토가 일반 농장에서 재배된 토마토보다 월등히 높은 노화 방지제를 함유하고 있다는 사실을 밝혀냈다.

Source text - English Teams to Survey N. Korea Facilities U.S., China, Russia to Send Nuclear Experts; Bush Meets With S. Korean Leader In 2005, talks to end North Korea's nuclear program stalled after the Treasury Department alleged that North Korea was involved in illicit counterfeiting and money-laundering schemes. But Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice became intrigued with the idea of offering North Korea a peace treaty as a way of jump-starting the talks, according to "The Confidante," a new book by Washington Post reporter Glenn Kessler. Until Friday, Bush had only hinted at the idea in his public comments. But the book says Bush raised the idea with Chinese President Hu Jintao over lunch at the White House in April 2006. Hu agreed to send an emissary to North Korea to gauge how a peace treaty might be received. Last October, while the six-party talks were stalled, North Korea announced it had conducted its first underground nuclear test. The action spurred the administration to more actively engage the country and agree to abandon the Treasury action. In February, the United States and North Korea agreed to gradually restore diplomatic and economic relations. Last Sunday, North Korean officials announced that they would disclose all of the nation's nuclear activities and disable its nuclear facilities by the end of the year. In July, North Korea closed its main plutonium reactor at Yongbyon after receiving 50,000 tons of heavy fuel oil from South Korea -- the first installment of 1 million tons pledged as part of the February agreement. North Korea's invitation for the inspectors to begin surveying its nuclear facilities "is a sign of the seriousness of purpose that all sides, including the North Koreans, bring to this," Hill said. The announcement came after Bush and Roh made a joint appearance following their meeting here on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum, which ends Saturday.
