Before We Begin:
There is no single microphone that is “The Greatest Microphone in the World!” I know you want me to tell you which microphone is the best microphone you can buy – because you want the best – and that’s good! Unfortunately, there is no single “best” microphone. While there are some hard and fast rules concerning microphones and their usage, we will be looking at guidelines and common practices. I will make specific suggestions along the way – including brands, model numbers and prices. However, the only person who can determine which microphone is best for you is YOU! This tutorial will point you in the right direction; but as with most aspects of music, the ultimate decision-making tool is YOUR EARS! Maybe someday you will be able to tell me which microphone is “The Greatest Microphone in the World!”
INTRODUCTION
What is a Microphone?
A microphone is a device that converts sound waves into electrical signals. These electrical signals can then travel through cables or even transmitted through the air. Microphones are used in many everyday applications and can be found all around. If you have ever had a conversation on a cell-phone, then you have spoken into a microphone!
My First Microphone
Over the years, as a performer and recording engineer, I have built up a nice collection of microphones; and each microphone has its own sonic characteristics and preferred uses. However, I, like most people, started out with only enough money to buy one microphone. I needed a microphone to use primarily as a vocal microphone for live performances. So, I went to my local music store and asked the salesman’s advice. That night, I became the proud owner of a brand-new Shure SM-57.

My Shure SM-57 has been put to use in my studios recording guitars, horns, vocals, drums, and anything else I needed to record! It had to be used to record every sound source because at one point, it was the ONLY microphone I had! This same SM-57 served in live sound reinforcement for vocals, drums, percussion and guitars! I use this microphone (mic) to this day!!! It still works!
CHOOSING A MICROPHONE
When selecting a microphone, three main questions should be addressed. Keep these questions in mind when choosing your microphone:
1) What is the microphone going to be used for?
2) Where is it going to be used?
3) How much money do you want to spend?
If I Had to Choose Just One Microphone
If I were forced to choose only one microphone to cover all of my needs: for use on the stage for live sound reinforcement and for use in the studio, I would choose the Shure SM-58. You can buy one for around $100.00 and they sound great. The Shure SM-58 is reliable, durable and works well on many different sound sources. Unlike the Shure SM-57, the SM-58 has a rounded grill on the top of the microphone that makes it more comfortable for most people to sing into. Thus, the SM-58 (and others of similar shape) is called a vocal mic; and the SM-57 (and others of similar shape) is called an instrument mic (low profile / no pop-filter in the grill).

If you are a beginner and not sure if you will be recording vocals or instruments, performing live, or doing all of these activities, this is the microphone for you. The Shure SM-58 will be able to cover all of your basic needs. It is my top choice for an all-around / multi-purpose microphone for studio and stage AND it is very affordable.
Shure now offers the SM58-X2u package ($200) that includes an SM-58 microphone and the X2u - an XLR-to-USB signal adapter bundle. The adapter eliminates the need for an audio interface when hooking this mic up; simply use the adapter to plug your microphone directly into your computer’s USB port. The X2u is compatible with Windows Vista, XP, 2000, and Mac OS X 10.1 or later. This is a good all-in-one solution for recording.
Shure SM-58: Durability
You can find 58s in the top recording facilities as well as on many stages around the world – from the smallest coffee shops and karaoke bars to the biggest arena and stadium concerts. Dubbed as the one of the music industry’s workhorses, it has gained a very favorable reputation amongst musicians and engineers. These microphones are road-worthy and can really take a beating! The way I see it, if an SM-58 can withstand the punishment singers like Roger Daltrey (The Who) and Henry Rollins (Black Flag / Rollins Band) dish out, they can stand up to just about anything!

If the best studios in the world realize the value of stocking Shure SM-58s amidst a collection of microphones costing 2x – 100x more, we should probably take note.
Choose the Right Microphone for YOUR NEEDS!
Please understand that while the Shure SM-58 sees plenty of use in my studio and live performances, it is by no means the only microphone I use! Do not get the impression that this one microphone is the only one you will ever want or need! There are many excellent microphones to choose from. Depending upon your situation and career path, you may end up having over forty microphones in your collection! Every microphone has its very own sonic personality and strengths.
The Shure SM-58 might not be the best microphone for your needs. For example, if you are certain that you are only going to be recording vocals in your home studio and you have an unlimited budget, a nice pre-amp and a source of phantom power (to learn about Phantom Power, please read the Common Types of Mircophones Tutorial)(link please), then the Shure SM-58 would not be my first choice for your purposes; rather a high-quality condenser microphone would best suit your needs.
Sound professionals keep a wide variety of microphones on hand to cover the many situations they might encounter. They also know that there is rarely one “best” choice for any given situation. This is why it is most important that you trust your ears! Your ears must be your guide!
Good Microphones for Recording Vocals in Your Home Studio
If you know that the sole purpose of your microphone is for recording vocals (maybe some acoustic instruments like acoustic guitar, buzuq, oud, riq) in your home studio and you have a source of phantom power, the following microphones are best for you. They are reasonably priced and perform very well. Some of these mics come with assorted accessories like: shock mount, windscreen and / or carrying case.
If $100 is your limit - (good beginner’s microphones):

Seek help from other musicians, engineers, salesmen, Yallafan members. Get second (even third and fourth) opinions on what we have presented here. Microphone choice can be a very heated subject for some people. Just remember: the final choice is yours and nobody else’s! It’s your money and your path!
Budget Considerations
When selecting a microphone, be reasonable. Try to match the quality and price-level of all the parts of your signal chain. Unless you are planning to upgrade every piece of gear in your signal chain in the near future, it doesn’t make much sense to invest in a very expensive microphone. Why have a state of the art microphone paired up with a system that cannot perform at the level of the microphone? Even the “best microphone in the world” will not sound very good if the rest of the signal chain is terrible. However, when determining your budget, remember that: In audio, the saying “you get what you pay for” tends to hold true. Sage advice from a man named Rick also holds true: “Don’t buy ‘B’ if you really want or need ‘A’.”
Microphone prices are generally gauged for three groups: beginners, hobbyists (part-time musicians), and professionals. They are priced accordingly.
When you pay more for a microphone – this is what you are getting:
- - Better sound quality
- - Less operating noise
- Improved gain before feedback
- Wider and smoother frequency response
- Sturdier construction with better parts
- Greater durability
As explained above, you need to make sure you purchase the microphone that best suits your needs. After all, music gear tends to be expensive; and these mistakes can add up to be very costly! Learn as much as you can now as any knowledge gained will surely be of benefit in the future.
For most beginners, a dynamic microphone like the Shure SM-58 will cover your needs. However, it is wise to figure out your options. Please take the time to do your research! And remember: the microphone is only the first part of your signal chain! Accessories such as pop-filters, cables and stands will need to be considered. Interfaces and recording software are also necessary items for recording. Keep these things in mind when planning your budget.

Summary
This work was conducted at the biotechnology laboratory, Faculty of Science, Tanta University, throughout the period of 2002-2004.
This work aimed to:
Find out easy reproducible tissue culture technique that allows mass production of pear rootstocks (Pyrus communis) that were considered difficult to root by cuttings and it is possible to supply the growers with number of uniform plants.
This study included four stages:
1-Establishment of none contaminated cultures.
This stage contained two experiments for eliminating browning:
a- Effect of adding 100 mg/L ascorbic acid plus 150 mg/L citric acid or adding 100 mg/L ascorbic acid plus 150 mg/L citric acid and 2.5 g/L activated charcoal to culture medium on browning and survival percentages.
b- Effect of two periods of incubation (7 and 14 days) and two incubation temperatures (5 and 25 oC) on browning and survival percentages.
2- Multiplication of axillary shoots.
This stage contained three experiments of multiplication:
a- Effect of different concentrations of cytokinins (Benzyladenine or kinetin) at (0.0, 0.5, 1.0 and 2.0 mg/L) on axillary shoot proliferation through two subcultures.
b- Effect of different combinations of BA (0.5, 1 and 2 mg/L) and IBA (0.1 and 0.2 mg/L) on axillary shoot proliferation through two subcultures.
c- Effect of various salt strengths of MS medium (half-strength, three quarter-strength and full-strength) on axillary shoot proliferation through two subcultures.
3- Rooting of shoots.
This experiment was carried out to determine the best concentration of IBA (0, 0.5, 1, 2 or 4 mg/L) and the best medium strength (full-strength MS and half strength MS) on rooting of proliferated shoots of pear.
4- Acclimatization of plantlets.
Plantlets were successfully acclimatized and transferred to soil but the survival percentage did not exceed fifty percent because of the fungal infection.
Results of the experiments.
The best results for establishment stage were obtained by culturing the explants on MS medium supplemented with 100 mg/L ascorbic acid plus 150 mg/L citric acid and 2.5 g/L activated charcoal and incubated for 7 days at 5 oC.
The best results for the multiplication stage indicated that BA was more effective than Kin for all the tested characters and 1 mg/L of either BA or Kin was the best concentration. Medium supplemented with 2 mg/L BA 0.2 mg/L IBA gave the highest values but the obtained shoots on this medium was not the best, showing malformation presented in narrow and non expanded leaves. While the medium supplemented with 1 mg/L BA 0.2 mg/L IBA followed the previous medium in most of the studied characters but with normal shoots and well expanded leaves as half-strength MS was best than full-strength MS for shoot multiplication.
The best results for the rooting stage were obtained from half-strength MS medium supplemented with 2 mg/L IBA which significantly increased number of roots and rooting percentage as compared to the other treatments. While the length of roots was significantly increased by using half-strength MS medium supplemented with either 0.5 or 4 mg/L IBA.
Plantlets were successfully acclimatized and transferred to soil but the survival percentage did not exceed fifty percent because of the fungal infection.
Recommendations
The best results have been obtained by culturing nodal segments of pear rootstocks (Pyrus communis) on MS medium supplemented with 1 mg/L BA 0.2 mg/L IBA.
For the rooting of shoots, MS medium at half strength supplemented with 2 mg/L IBA gave satisfactory results and plantlets with good quality.

أجريت هذه الدراسة بمعمل التكنولوجيا الحيوية بكلية العلوم جامعة طنطا خلال الفترة من عام 2002 إلى 2004. وقد أجرى البحث على أصل الكمثرى كميونس.
كان الهدف من البحث
إيجاد بروتوكول مناسب لإكثار أصل الكمثرى كميونس الصعب الإكثار بالطرق التقليدية ولاسيما العقلة لصعوبة تجذيرها وذلك لإمداد المزارعين بشتلات متجانسة.
وقد اشتملت هذه الدراسة على أربعة مراحل هي:
1- مرحلة التثبيت.
وقد تضمنت هذه المرحلة تجربتين للحد من التلون باللون البني:
أ- دراسة إضافة 100 مجم/لتر حامض أسكوربيك مضافا إليه 150 مجم/لتر حامض ستريك أو إضافة 100 مجم/لتر حامض أسكوربيك مضافا إليه 150 مجم/لتر حامض ستريك مضافا إليهم 2.5 جم/لتر فحم منشط إلى بيئة الزراعة وتأثير ذلك على نسبة التلون البني ونسبة البقاء.
ب- دراسة تأثير التحضين لمدة 7 أو 14 يوم في الظلام وتأثير درجة حرارة التحضين (5 أو25 درجة مئوية) على نسبة التلون البني ونسبة البقاء.
2- مرحلة التضاعف.
وقد تضمنت هذه المرحلة ثلاث تجارب:
أ- دراسة تأثير التركيزات المختلفة من السيتوكينين (BA أو kin) بتركيزات (صفر، 0.5، 1.0 و 2.0مجم/لتر) على تكوين الأفرع الجانبية خلال نقلتين.
ب- دراسة تأثير التداخلات المختلفة بين BA بتركيز (0.5، 1.0 و2.0 مجم/لتر) و IBA بتركيزات (0.1 و0.2 مجم/لتر) على تكوين الأفرع الجانبية خلال نقلتين.
ج- دراسة تأثير القوى المختلفة لبيئة MS (نصف قوة، ثلاث أرباع قوة و قوة كاملة) على تكوين الأفرع الجانبية خلال نقلتين.
3- مرحلة التجذير.
أجريت هذه التجربة لتحديد أفضل تركيز من IBA (صفر، 0.5، 1.0، 2.0 و 4.0 مجم/لتر) وأفضل قوة لبيئة MS (قوة كاملة أو نصف قوة) على تكون الجذور العرضية على أفرع أصل الكمثرى.
4- أقلمة النبتات الناتجة من زراعة الأنسجة.
نتائج التجارب:
1- أظهرت الدراسات أن أفضل النتائج في مرحلة التثبيت تم الحصول عليها من زراعة المنفصلات النباتية على بيئة MS تحتوى على 100 مجم/لتر حامض أسكوربيك مضافا إليه 150 مجم/لتر حامض ستريك مضافا إليهم 2.5 جم/لتر فحم منشط والتحضين لمدة سبعة أيام في الظلام على خمسة درجات مئوية قبل نقلها لظروف التحضين العادية (25 درجة مئوية و16 ساعة إضاءة).
2- النتائج في مرحلة التضاعف تشير إلى أن BA أفضل من kin بالنسبة لكل الصفات المدروسة وأن 1 مجم/لتر لكل منهما هو أفضل تركيز أما بالنسبة للتداخلات بين BA وIBA فأن أفضل النتائج بالنسبة لعدد الفروع المنتجة تم الحصول عليها عند الزراعة على بيئة تحتوي على 2 مجم/لتر BA 0.2 مجم/لتر IBA ولكن هذه الفروع أظهرت تشوهات تتمثل في ضيق وعدم اتساع أنصال الأوراق بينما البيئة المحتوية على 1 مجم/لتر BA 0.2 مجم/لتر IBA تلت البيئة السابقة في معظم الصفات ولكن الفروع كانت طبيعية والأوراق مفرودة وقد كانت بيئة MS بنصف قوتها أفضل من بيئة MS كاملة القوة بالنسبة لتضاعف الأفرع.
3- بالنسبة لتجارب التجذير فإن أفضل النتائج تم الحصول عليها عند الزراعة على بيئة MS بنصف قوتها مضافا إليها 2 مجم/لتر IBA والتي أظهرت زيادة معنوية في عدد الجذور ونسبة التجذير بالمقارنة بالمعاملات الأخرى بينما تأثر طول الجذور معنويا عند الزراعة على بيئة MS بنصف قوتها مضافا إليها إما 0.5 أو 4 مجم/لتر IBA .
4- تم أقلمة النبتات بنجاح ونقلت إلى التربة ولكن نسبة البقاء لم تتجاوز 50٪ بسبب الإصابات الفطرية.
التوصيات
يوصى باستخدام بيئة MS مضافا إليها 1 مجم/لتر BA 0.2 مجم/لتر IBA لإكثار الأفرع الجانبية لأصل الكمثرى كميونس عن طريق زراعة الأجزاء الساقية المحتوية على براعم.
كما يوصى باستخدام بيئة MS بنصف قوتها مضافا إليها 2 مجم/لتر IBA لتجذير الفروع وإنتاج نبتات ذات صفات جيدة.
