Джейн, аккуратно сложила мешок и скатерть, на которой спала. Залезла в телегу, подняла голову и долго смотрела в темное небо, сплошь усеянное крупными звездами. За ближнем холмом едва тлела утренняя заря, солнца еще не видно, но на небе уже проступило серое мутное пятно, медленно меняющее краски на фиолетовые и розовые.
Погост медленно побрел по равнине, норовя свернуть направо. Колеса наезжали на камни, телега, готовая развалиться, скрипела, но почему-то не разваливалась, а ползла дальше. Джейн думала о том, что впереди новый бесконечно длинный день, наполненный солнцем, пылью и бормотаньем Садыкова. Carefully, Jane folded up her sleeping bag and the piece of cloth she had used as cover. Climbed into the cart, raised her head up to the sky and kept it there for a while, tracing the seemingly colossal night stars. Daybreak was cooking just beyond the shoulder of the nearest hill, the sky had already revealed a blurry gray blob, faint and growing, leisurely turning crimson and lilac, paving way for the ascending sun.
Graveyard plodded along the valley, still veering right. The wheels ran over and against rocks big and small, each time the cart creaked an ominous creak, yet somehow continued moving. Jane was engrossed in the prospect of the new day, the infinitely long day of the sun and the dust and Sadykov’s jabber. Patience… unless they strayed from the road, they should reach their destination by nightfall.
“Goddamnit!” Sadykov shouted at Graveyard periodically. “I said go, you filthy beast!”

Linda Bright inhaled the cigarette smoke and held her breath to draw out the pleasure. For twenty odd seconds the nicotine twisted and looped along the lungs’ air and mucous cells, brimming with cinder of smokes past. Having weaved its way through microscopic pores and into blood vessels, the balmy stupor drifted alongside the blood cells, getting stuck around the sharp bends of slender capillaries, like raft debris, until it reached the brain, inducing wooziness and a sensation of pleasure.
Linda had picked up the cigarette butt on the street, amidst vain attempts to get her bearings and work out her way home. The brain refused to analyze all that the eyes saw and the ears heard and the other senses managed to pick up: hordes of pedestrians scurrying along the endless streets of New York, signals of restless cars dithering anxiously at street lights, reflections of skyscrapers in shop windows. It’s been several days since she has had real food, getting by on random refuse salvaged from garbage cans. Her most successful sally resulted in a half-eaten McDonald’s burger, trashed minutes earlier by a little boy. That was two days ago, or so it seemed.
Clad in a wrinkled robe over bare skin, the woman lay on a bed, which, judging by its harsh odor, hasn’t known fresh sheets or clean pillows in quite some time. The rest of the room didn’t look any better: limp cigarette butts floating in the murky liquid of dirt-stained glasses, rock-hard food leftovers stuck to unwashed plates, piled up on a small coffee table by the TV. Rounding out the peculiar still-life were empty bottles of cheap whisky, crumpled paper bags with fat stains, randomly scattered clothes, and a small rug of indiscernible color with ends rolled up. The crown jewel of this pig’s breakfast was a broken vacuum cleaner smack center of it all, as if put on display for a purpose utterly unknown.
Linda sat up on the edge of the bed and stared into the black TV screen, hoping that out of the glass deep there will rise an answer to the question: where can you get some cash if you feel bad but still look pretty good?
She moved into the bathroom, bare feet smacking against the sticky filthy floor. There she sprinkled her face, gargled some mouthwash, worked her toothbrush and fixed up her hair. Then fished a worn lip liner out of a bag, traced her lips and shot another glance in the mirror. Looking back at her was a comely young woman in her mid twenties, pale with long dark hair, dark eyes and a high prominent forehead.
When he first spotted the young woman, Vito Graziani, the heavyset scruffy owner of both a tiny meat store in downtown Manhattan and a massive gut, hanging over his skinny legs like a terrace, wiped his hands hastily on a bloody apron, then barked at his assistant, a scrawny cross-eyed lad with jumbo ears, to watch over the store.
Linda followed the butcher into the storeroom adjoining the shop floor. The disarrayed dusty room was crammed full of carton and plastic boxes, rolls of wrapping paper and torn posters of grinning cows, alongside piles of metal components from various devices of obscure function.
Vito shut the door from the inside, leaned back against the wall and unzipped his pants, hands trembling with excitement. He pulled them down in one fell swoop, underwear and all, and froze in fervent anticipation. The woman squatted in time to behold a slightly bent male genitalia, enframed by almost colorless curls — a sight that wasn’t entirely unfamiliar. Her nostrils were assaulted by the vile odors of a clammy crotch and old underwear with urine stains; it has clearly been a while since soap and water paid a visit to either region. She gave the scrotum a gentle tap and proceeded to rub the flaccid pecker with both hands, causing the man to feel a pleasant stiffness below the belly. Without waiting for the penis to get fully erect, Linda seized the head with her lips and settled into a familiar motion. The butcher’s breath became more rapid and his poorly shaved face took on a vermillion hue; the increasing frequency of loud moans forebode an impending release. This grimy, ever-hungry woman didn’t come quite as often as he’d like, which only added to these occasional meetings. And she knew what she was doing, unlike his old wife, who had relinquished her marital duties what seemed like ages ago.
“A-ah!” Vito sent forth a wild cry of pleasure, as he felt the sperm rush through him in pulsating thrusts.

Я уже пыталась заводить дневник. Во втором классе учительница велела нам следить за природой и отмечать наиболее интересные явления. Первая запись в моем дневнике гласила: «Бабушка боится мышей». Вторая: «Живая мышь — 1 руб. 30 коп. Дохлая — 2 руб.»
В честь поступления в университет мама подарила мне адресную книжку небывалой красоты: атласная бумага, кожаный переплет. Похабить ее телефонами ЖЭКа у меня рука не поднималась, и я начала записывать туда мысли.
На букву «А»: «А на меня Извольский смотрит!».
На букву «Б»: «Баранова — дура».
На букву «В»: «Верность — вот чем я его замучаю!».
Летопись обрывалась на странице с буквой «Ж». Понятно, что на ней было написано.
В течение последующих двадцати лет я писала все, что угодно, кроме дневника, — романы, уставы и заявления в ЗАГС. Вчера мой психоаналитик Арни сказал, что без дневника мне больше нельзя.

In honor of my admission into college my mother presented me with an address book of wondrous beauty: leather-bound with silk paper. I dared not debase it with numbers of local plumbers, and so it became a venue for me to record my thoughts.
For “A” there was: “A boy looked at me today in the cafeteria.”
For “B”: “Boris is an idiot.”
For “C”: “Courtesy — I will kill him with it!”
The chronicle ended abruptly on the page with the letter "F." You can guess what was written there.
Over the course of the subsequent twenty years I've written all sorts of things except a diary — novels, statutes, official claims to the Civil Registry Office. But yesterday Arnie, my shrink, decided that I cannot do without a diary any longer.
"Write down everything that worries you. Ask yourself: who are you?"
Who am I? I am a person of an unconventional biography and even less conventional sorrows.
My name is Marge Tensh. Once it was Margarita Tenshova, but the Russian pieces of my name chipped with time.
I live in North Hollywood, the lousiest town ever.
