Перед рассветом Садыков разбудил Джейн и объявил, что река обмелела, почти высохла и можно трогаться. Погост стоял уже запряженный в телегу, угольки ночного костра догорели, оставив горку золы, которую разметал ветер.
Джейн, аккуратно сложила мешок и скатерть, на которой спала. Залезла в телегу, подняла голову и долго смотрела в темное небо, сплошь усеянное крупными звездами. За ближнем холмом едва тлела утренняя заря, солнца еще не видно, но на небе уже проступило серое мутное пятно, медленно меняющее краски на фиолетовые и розовые.
Погост медленно побрел по равнине, норовя свернуть направо. Колеса наезжали на камни, телега, готовая развалиться, скрипела, но почему-то не разваливалась, а ползла дальше. Джейн думала о том, что впереди новый бесконечно длинный день, наполненный солнцем, пылью и бормотаньем Садыкова. Надо набраться терпения и ждать: если они не сбились с дороги, то должны прибыть на место сегодня к вечеру.

Sadykov roused Jane from sleep before dawn with an announcement that the river had grown sufficiently shallow, actually, it had nearly dried. Graveyard, already harnessed to the cart, stood at the ready beside the embers of the night fire, bereft of the last of their red, resigned to let the wind disperse them as they morphed into a hillock of ash.
Carefully, Jane folded up her sleeping bag and the piece of cloth she had used as cover. She climbed into the cart, raised her head to the sky and kept it there a while, tracing the seemingly colossal night stars. Daybreak was cooking just beyond the shoulder of the nearest hill, the sky had already revealed a blurry gray blob, faint and growing, leisurely turning crimson and lilac, paving way for the ascending sun.
Graveyard plodded along the valley, still veering right. The wheels ran over and against rocks big and small, each time the cart creaked an ominous creak, yet somehow continued moving. Jane was engrossed in the prospect of the new day, the infinitely long day of the sun and the dust and Sadykov’s jabber. Patience… unless they strayed from the road, they should reach their destination by nightfall.
“Goddamnit!” Sadykov shouted at Graveyard periodically. “I said go, you filthy beast!”

Секунд двадцать дурманящая никотиновая смесь крутилась по многочисленным альвеолам и слизистым клеткам легких, забитых шлаками предыдущих окурков. Проникнув через микроскопические поры в кровеносные сосуды, сладкая одурь поплыла по течению вместе с кровяными клетками, застревая на крутых изгибах тонких капилляров, подобно щепкам разбитых плотов, пока не добралась до мозга, вызывая легкое головокружение и чувство наслаждения.
Недокуренную сигарету Линда подобрала на улице, тщетно пытаясь сообразить, в какую сторону повернуть, чтобы добраться домой. Мозг отказывался анализировать то, что видели глаза, слышали уши и воспринимали остальные органы чувств: толпы людей, снующих по бесконечным тротуарам Нью-Йорка, сигналы нервных машин, нетерпеливо подрагивающих перед светофорами, витрины магазинов, отражающие упирающиеся в небо дома. Шлепая босыми ногами по липкому немытому полу, она прошла в ванную, тщательно умыла лицо, прополоскала рот и зубы и причесалась. Достав из сумки стертый карандаш, провела по губам. Еще раз посмотрела на себя в зеркало. На нее глядела бледная миловидная женщина лет двадцати пяти с длинными черными волосами, высоким открытым лбом и карими глазами.

Linda Bright inhaled the cigarette smoke and held her breath to draw out the pleasure. For twenty odd seconds the nicotine twisted and looped along the lungs’ air and mucous cells, brimming with cinder of smokes past. Having weaved its way through microscopic pores and into blood vessels, the balmy stupor drifted alongside blood cells, getting stuck around the sharp bends of slender capillaries, like raft debris, until it reached the brain, inducing wooziness and a sensation of pleasure.
Linda had picked up the cigarette butt on the street, amidst vain attempts to get her bearings and work out her way home. The brain refused to analyze all that the eyes saw and the ears heard and the other senses managed to pick up: hordes of pedestrians scurrying along the endless streets of New York, signals of restless cars dithering anxiously at street lights, reflections of skyscrapers in shop windows. It had been several days since she had had real food, getting by on random refuse salvaged from garbage cans. Her most successful sally resulted in a half-eaten McDonald’s burger, trashed minutes earlier by a little boy. That was two days ago, or so it seemed.
Clad in a wrinkled robe over bare skin, the woman lay on a bed, which, judging by its harsh odor, hadn't known fresh sheets or clean pillows in quite some time. The rest of the room didn't look any better: limp cigarette butts floating in the murky liquid of dirt-stained glasses, rock-hard food leftovers stuck to unwashed plates, piled up on a small coffee table by the TV. Rounding out the peculiar still-life were empty bottles of cheap whisky, crumpled paper bags with fat stains, randomly scattered clothes, and a small rug of indiscernible color with ends rolled up. The crown jewel of this pig’s breakfast was a broken vacuum cleaner smack center of it all, as if put on display for a purpose utterly unknown.
Linda sat up on the edge of the bed and stared into the black TV screen, hoping that out of the glass deep there will rise an answer to the question: where can you get some cash if you feel bad but still look pretty good?
She moved into the bathroom, bare feet smacking against the sticky filthy floor. There she sprinkled her face, gargled some mouthwash, worked her toothbrush and fixed up her hair. Then fished a worn lip liner out of a bag, traced her lips and shot another glance in the mirror. Looking back at her was a comely young woman in her mid twenties, pale with long dark hair, dark eyes and a high prominent forehead.
When he first spotted the young woman, Vito Graziani, the heavyset scruffy owner of both a tiny meat store in downtown Manhattan and a massive gut, hanging over his skinny legs like a terrace, wiped his hands hastily on a bloody apron, then barked at his assistant, a scrawny cross-eyed lad with jumbo ears, to watch over the store.
Linda followed the butcher into the storeroom adjoining the shop floor. The disarrayed dusty room was crammed full of carton and plastic boxes, rolls of wrapping paper and torn posters of grinning cows, alongside piles of metal components from various devices of obscure function.
Vito shut the door from the inside, leaned back against the wall and unzipped his pants, hands trembling with excitement. He pulled them down in one fell swoop, underwear and all, and froze in fervent anticipation. The woman squatted in time to behold a slightly bent male genitalia, enframed by almost colorless curls — a sight that wasn’t entirely unfamiliar. Her nostrils were assaulted by the vile odors of a clammy crotch and old underwear with urine stains; it had clearly been a while since soap and water paid a visit to either region. She gave the scrotum a gentle tap and proceeded to rub the flaccid pecker with both hands, causing the man to feel a pleasant stiffness below the belly. Without waiting for the penis to get fully erect, Linda seized the head with her lips and settled into a familiar motion. The butcher’s breath became more rapid and his poorly shaved face took on a vermillion hue; the increasing frequency of loud moans forebode an impending release. This grimy, ever-hungry woman didn’t come quite as often as he’d like, which only added to these occasional meetings. And she knew what she was doing, unlike his old wife, who had relinquished her marital duties what seemed like ages ago.
“A-ah!” Vito sent forth a wild cry of pleasure, as he felt the sperm rush through him in pulsating thrusts.

Было воскресенье, вторая половина дня. И все было в порядке — исправный Land Cruiser, выспавшийся водитель, асфальтированная дорога. В тот год у нас было модно спать в багажнике, раскинув спальник по диагонали. Я сладко дремал, как вдруг джип решил, что он — самолет, и полетел…
Он летел, вращаясь в воздухе, и периодически бился то крышей, то колесами о землю.
Еще толком не проснувшись, я сгруппировался в позе зародыша и крутился внутри багажника, как в центрифуге. Последний удар был самый страшный, и у меня мелькнула мысль, что, скорее всего, из экипажа в живых остался я один. Я вылез из багажника. Машина дымилась, начали открываться двери: по одному из машины вываливались люди. К нашему общему изумлению все оказались живы и на первый взгляд почти здоровы. Стойки кабины не сложились, потому что крышу прикрывал большой сплошной багажник. Лобовое стекло было выбито, колеса разбортировались. Как ни странно, продолжала играть музыка.
Боковым взглядом я отметил, что Оксана Никоненко, самая первая сотрудница нашей компании, с которой мы трудимся уже 16 лет, после нескольких шагов легла на землю. «Травма позвоночника», — подумал я. В багажнике нашлась пара бутылок настоек, час назад купленных в Мандрогах. Чтобы снять у группы психологический шок, я залил в рот каждому по стакану. В таких ситуациях важно, чтобы группа сохраняла бодрость духа, самообладание и могла здраво отнестись ко всему происходящему. И глядя на лежащую на земле Никоненко, у которой, как мы тогда и думали, травма оказалась самой серьезной, я сделал следующее (эта история звучит в значительной части моих лекций и интервью, и Никоненко уже перестала сердиться, когда я ее рассказываю). Я расстегнул ей джинсы и сказал:
— Никоненко, смотри, я здесь буду сейчас мастурбировать. Если ты кончишь, это значит, что сигнал дошел до мозга. А как он может дойти до мозга мимо позвоночника? Следовательно, если это произойдет, твой позвоночник — целый.

It was Sunday afternoon. Everything was in perfect order: our Land Cruiser was fully functional, our driver was rested, and we were on a paved road. That year it was fashionable to sleep in the trunk, with your sleeping bag laid out diagonally. I was napping sweetly, when suddenly the vehicle decided it was a plane, and went airborne…
It soared, spinning in midair, and periodically hitting the ground with either the roof or the wheels.
Not yet quite awake, I curled up in the fetal position and spun around inside the trunk like in a centrifuge. The final blow was the worst, and I couldn’t help thinking that I would probably be the only survivor out of our whole team. I climbed out of the trunk of the smoking SUV. The doors began to open, and people tumbled out, one by one. To our shared surprise, everyone was alive and apparently well, at least at first glance. The roof rack had prevented the passenger compartment from collapsing. The windshield had been knocked out and the tires had come off the rim. Oddly enough, the music was still playing.
Out of the corner of my eye I saw Oksana Nikonenko, our company’s very first employee and my colleague for over 16 years, take a few steps and then lie down on the ground. Whiplash, I thought to myself. There were a few bottles of medicinal drinks in the trunk, bought only an hour before in Mangrodi. To ease the psychological shock for the whole group, I poured a glass into each person’s mouth. Of course, we immediately called Moscow, and a rescue team was already on its way to the airport. Of course, the St. Petersburg doctors were alerted, including friends of Vasiliy Mozhukhin, who was a surgeon as well as our irreplaceable film director. Of course, Moscow was already phoning the Podporozhye regional office, which was deploying an ambulance to our location.
In situations like this it’s important for the team to stay positive and composed, allowing a sensible assessment of what’s happening. Looking at Nikonenko lying on the ground with what we already thought was, and in fact did turn out to be, the most serious injury, I took the following action (this story figures in so many of my lectures and interviews that Nikonenko no longer gets mad at me for telling it). I unbuttoned her jeans and said:
“Nikonenko, listen up, I’m going to masturbate you right now. If you come, that means the signal has reached your brain, and how could it reach your brain except through your spine? Therefore, if it happens, your spine is intact.”
What a scene! Someone who just broke her back ten minutes earlier is lying there and cracking up.

I was feeling woozy, not yet aware of the flattened vessels in my neck, tailbone, and middle back, several broken ribs, and an injured hand — petty details that didn’t warrant immediate attention. I gave the woman’s hand a hard squeeze and said:
