In December 2004, I was a 19 years old boy from a small countryside village in the Province of Naples. I had started my university career a few months before and, fortunately, had enough awareness of myself to figure out what drew my interests the most: the proliferation of images in our era. Stored, recorded, broadcast, edited, multiplied, everywhere. I was undoubtedly timeless keen on cinema and visual entertainment, especially when that “pleasure” was ready to be enjoyed at home. My house was the most comfortable environment where I usually sat in front of the TV or surfed the internet. In Rudolf Arnheim’s words tough, I looked like:
“The pathetic hermit, squatting in his room, hundreds of miles away from the scene he experiences as his present life, the ‘viewer’ who cannot even laugh or applaud without feeling ridiculous, […] the final product of a century-long development, which has led from the campfire, the market place, and the arena to the lonesome consumer of spectacles today.” (ARNHEIM, 1935 : 198)
In my opinion, it is not a matter of being the laziest student ever, always alone, in someone’s imaginary also a little “nerd”. Simply, in spite of the fact that I really loved watching films, TV series, cartoons etc., I also discovered some years ago the unique agreeable feeling to own these contents. I early started to record my favorite films and TV episodes, collect them in a catalogue, and put all my DVDs on the shelves so that when I entered my room, I felt like I was the owner of something.

Nel dicembre 2004, ero un giovane diciannovenne che viveva in un piccolo paese della provincia di Napoli. Avevo iniziato la mia carriera universitaria alcuni mesi prima e, fortunatamente, ero abbastanza grande da poter capire cosa attirasse maggiormente la mia attenzione: la proliferazione di immagini nella nostra epoca contemporanea. Immagazzinate, registrate, trasmesse attraverso i più svariati canali, modificate, moltiplicate in ogni dove. Ero senza dubbio appassionato, e lo sono tuttora, di cinema e ogni tipo di intrattenimento visivo; in particolare dalla possibilità di “possedere questo piacere”, averlo in casa, nella mia dimensione privata. L’ambiente domestico è il più comodo di tutti gli altri spazi della mia vita e, generalmente, spendevo molto del mio tempo navigando la rete o guardando la TV proprio da casa. Detta con le parole di Rudolf Arnheim, assomigliavo molto al:
"Patetico eremita, ranicchiato nella sua stanza, lontano centinaia di miglia dalla scena a cui assiste come se fosse attuale, lo spettatore che non può astenersi dal ridere o applaudire senza sentirsi ridicolo, [...] il prodotto finale di un processo secolare che, dal campo di battaglia, dal mercato, dall'arena ha portato al solitario consumatore di spettacoli contemporaneo." (Arneim, 1935, 198)
Ma secondo la mia modesta opinione non era tanto il problema di essere uno studente pigro, sempre solo nella sua stanza, nell’immaginario collettivo quello che viene definito un povero inetto. Semplicemente, a dispetto del mio amore per il cinema, le serie televisive, i cartoni animati ecc., alcuni anni fa ho anche scoperto la piacevole sensazione di possedere quei contenuti audiovisivi. Molto presto iniziai a registrare i miei spettacoli preferiti, film e TV, organizzarli in un catalogo e sistemare tutti i DVD sugli scaffali della mia libreria, così quando entravo nella mia stanza mi sentivo il proprietario di qualcosa.
Il progresso tecnologico mi ha dato questa possibilità. |

My name is Sebastiano Carbone and I am a graduate student at the Faculty of Foreign Languages of the University of Naples "L'Oriental", Italy. In my career I decided to focus my attention on the new media branch of sociology and make my personal interests also the core of my profession.
In 2008 I used to study in Utrecht (The Netherlands) for one semester as an exchange student where I broadened the knowledge of my target languages.
In May 2009 I moved to Santiago, Chile where I am now working in translations, subtitling and english/italian classes.
