I remember reading once that some fellows use language to conceal thought, but it's been my experience that a good many more use it instead of thought.
A businessman's conversation should be regulated by fewer and simpler rules than any other function of the human animal. They are:
Have something to say.
Say it.
Stop talking.
Beginning before you know what you want to say and keeping on after you have said it lands a merchant in a lawsuit or the poorhouse, and the first is a short cut to the second. I maintain a legal department here, and it costs a lot of money, but it's to keep me from going to law.
It's all right when you are calling on a girl or talking with friends after dinner to run a conversation like a Sunday-school excursion, with stops to pick flowers; but in the office your sentences should be the shortest distance possible between periods. Cut out the introduction and the peroration, and stop before you get to secondly. You've got to preach short sermons to catch sinners; and deacons won't believe they need long ones themselves. Give fools the first and women the last word. The meat's always in the middle of the sandwich. Of course, a light butter on either side of it doesn't do any harm if it's intended for a man who likes butter.
Remember, too, that it's easier to look wise than to talk wisdom. Say less than the other fellow and listen more than you talk; for when a man's listening he isn't telling on himself and he's flattering the fellow who is. Give most men a good listener and most women enough note-paper and they'll tell all they know. Money talks -- but not unless its owner has a loose tongue, and then its remarks are always offensive. Czytałem kiedyś, że niektórzy mówią po to, by ukryć myśli - ale z doświadczenia wiem, że więcej jest takich, którzy mówią zamiast myśleć.
Mowa biznesmena powinna rządzić się prostszymi i mniej licznymi regułami niż jakakolwiek inna czynność ludzkiego zwierzęcia. Oto one:
Miej coś do powiedzenia.
Powiedz to.
I siedź cicho.
Przedsiębiorca, który mówi zanim pomyśli co powiedzieć i mówi dalej, kiedy już to powie, kończy albo w sądzie albo w przytułku – a z pierwszego do drugiego droga niedaleka. Utrzymuję tu cały sztab prawników i wydaję na nich fortunę, ale to wszystko właśnie po to, żeby uniknąć sądu.
Kiedy odwiedzasz dziewczynę albo gawędzisz po obiedzie z przyjaciółmi, możesz śmiało dosiadać konika, ruszać na wycieczkę i zrywać po drodze kwiatki gdzie tylko masz ochotę, lecz w pracy twoje zdania powinny zmierzać najkrótszą drogą od kropki do kropki. Daruj sobie wstęp i podsumowanie; kończ zanim powiesz: „po drugie.” Grzesznika nawrócisz tylko krótkim kazaniem, a świętoszek i tak nie uwierzy, że potrzebuje długiego. Pozwalaj głupcom mieć pierwsze słowo, a kobietom ostatnie. To, co najsmaczniejsze, jest zawsze w środku kanapki. Masełko po obu stronach oczywiście nie zawadzi, o ile kanapka jest dla kogoś, kto je lubi.
Pamiętaj też, że łatwiej wyglądać na mądrego niż mądrze mówić. Mów mniej niż inni i słuchaj więcej niż mówisz, bo słuchając nie mówisz nic, co mogłoby ci zaszkodzić, a przy tym schlebiasz rozmówcy, który właśnie się pogrąża. Uważnie słuchaj mężczyzn i bądź hojny dla kobiet, a większość z nich powie ci wszystko, co wie. Pieniądze mówią – ale tylko jeśli ich właściciel ma długi język, a wtedy ich słowa zawsze obrażają. Bieda też mówi, tyle że nikt jej nie chce słuchać. |

1. TRANSLATION

2. RESEARCH AND TEACHING
- 2003-2010 - seven years of experience as an academic teacher in the Institute of English at John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin and its Off-Campus Faculty in Tomaszów Lubelski (English literature, introduction to literature, and practical English conversation, lexis, writing, academic writing)
- Since 2008 - employed in the Language Teacher Training College in Chełm (literature, translation).
The six years of research work, although not actually crowned with a PhD, broadened my horizons immensely and helped me develop qualities very much needed in a translator: thoroughness and attention to nuance. They also enabled me to master the conventions of academic writing way beyond what is required at the M.A. level.
My academic interests and research embraced the field of literary studies and interdisciplinary cultural studies, extending into theology, philosophy, anthropology, and media studies. I delivered presentations at international conferences and published English-language research papers in conference proceedings.
Among my seminar colleagues I gained a reputation for being a thorough proofreader of peer work.
3. JOURNALISM
2003 - journalist internship in the Catholic Information Agency (KAI), Foreign Section.
2003 - journalist internship in Kurier Lubelski, a local daily.
1999-2003 - contributor to and co-editor of Cool Times, an English-language student's magazine.
