I started translating in 1996 from Hungarian to English for several south Slovakian villages seeking EU funding. Then in the next year I was assisting a language school in translations from German and Slovak to English. But despite this start, I only seriously began translating as a sideline in 2003 for a local agency where I had been teaching English. Today I am working with my Slovak wife, who has just started a translating agency, for over a dozen private clients and translating agencies. With eight years as an assistant auditor and in-house translator for an accounting firm and over twenty years prior to that working in industry and teaching in both America and Europe, I have gained much experience in translating several language combinations for demanding clients and agencies, rising to the highest level at one of the major agencies in Slovakia. It was only a recent decision by my wife and me, prompted at the request of an important institution in Bratislava, to devote ourselves full time to translating. We would welcome networking with other translators and clients for solutions.
My specialty fields are audit, accounting and finance from my experience with a mid-tier international accounting network plus legal contracts, statistical reports, insurance policies, advertisements and company directives from projects we have done with the translating agencies. Both my wife and I have also translated mathematics, chemistry and history papers and documents for a large chemical plant and mining company near us.
Much of the translating I do is from either Slovak to German to English, though translations from Czech have been steadily increasing in recent years. My wife does translations from English, German and Czech to Slovak and also interprets between Slovak and English. Both of us often work together on most of the translations we do.
As a native English speaker with over 15 years living in Central Europe, there are certain advantages for a customer who needs a translation to English that is clear to the reader and expresses accurately what the customer wants to say.
