But in truth, the tale starts a little earlier.
After 1745, the Scottish Highlands were, on the surface at least, under the thumb of the English redcoats. And as punishment for the temerity of their uprising, and to rub salt in the wounds inflicted at Culloden, the rebel highlanders were banned from wearing the kilt, carrying arms and distilling whisky.
