Mixing with myMix
With myMix it’s simple to create up to 8 independent stereo mixes with up to sixteen channels of audio controlled through an intuitive musician friendly interface.
Instead of trying to remember who is on what channel on a confusing mixing board, myMix allows you to name your unit as well as each input.
Mixing is simply a matter finding the name and instrument you would like adjust, selecting the channel, and making changes to volume, tone, pan and effect send level.
In addition, each channel can be muted or solo’d independently and a master Mute button is available to silence all channels at once.
So if you want that guitar loud, make it loud.
If you want to hear your singer in a huge Hall reverb, dial one up.
If you want to mute the backing vocals, go for it.
Every change you make is strictly for you and doesn’t affect anyone else on the network.
Additional master EQ
myMix has an additional four band parametric master EQ for tailoring the output to headphones, in-ear monitors or stage monitors.

Up to 18 tracks of 24bit, 48kHz time-stamped .wav audio files can be recorded to optional micro SD, standard SD or SDHC cards.
The moment you hit the REC button a new session folder is created and each signal is recorded directly from the preamp to an individual track without processing.
An additional stereo track of your processed mix is also recorded to provide a quick reference.
By pressing the REC button again the session is ended and you are able to either rename the session or simply keep the default name and continue on.
Simply transfer the files from the SD card into your favorite recording software for overdubs, mixing and mastering.

Yes, the maximum number of myMix on a system is eight.
We are a band with four musicians, how many myMix do we need?
We highly recommend one myMix per musician, and have found in our testing with musicians that once they experience the ability to create their very own mix they aren’t very excited about going back to previous monitoring methods.
That doesn’t mean you can’t share a myMix.
Just know that you will be forced to compromise your ideal mix, the very problem myMix aims to solve.
Can I use the headphone outputs and the line level outputs at the same time?
Yes.
The signal being fed to the headphone and line outputs are identical.
So if you want to use an in-ear monitoring system in addition to wedges, go for it.
We are four musicians with seven mics/instruments, but the keyboardist needs three channels.
There are only two inputs per myMix, how would we connect his third input?
If one of the musicians is only using one of his inputs simply plug the keyboardist’s third input into a spare channel.
If we connect our instruments/mics directly to myMix, how do we get the signal to the FOH console?
There are a few of ways to get your inputs to a console.
You can use a Y-cable coming from the source where one end of the Y-cable plugs into your myMix and the other plugs into the console.
Or, if you have a stage splitter box, you can connect the source to the split and send one output to myMix and the other to the FOH console.
Depending on the situation you can even use an additional myMix as the FOH mixer and completely eliminate the console and snake.
What kind of headphones do you recommend, is there something special to look for?
Headphone selection is a very personal choice.
Besides the obvious preferences you may have regarding brand, size, color etc, you should look for headphones that have an impedance rating between **** and *** to ensure you have enough level to satisfy your tastes.
During our beta testing, when musicians opted to monitor through headphones, we witnessed everything from high end studio headphones in use to the cheapest stock mp3 player headsets.
The Master Equalizer in myMix allows you to dial in the stereo output to maximize your particular headphones.
Our singer uses an in-ear system, but our guitar player wants to use his wedge, can we use both for myMix?
Absolutely.
The great thing about myMix is that it doesn’t limit you to a silent rehearsal environment where everyone is forced to use headphones.
Again, the Master Equalizer in each myMix unit lets your guitar player optimize his wedge and your singer dial in his in-ears.
Can I plug my guitar directly into myMix, or do I need a guitar amplifier?
You can, but it isn’t recommended.
The impedance of the myMix inputs is really for mic and line level sources, not instrument level sources.
In our experience we have found very few guitar players who prefer the sound of a direct guitar sound over an amp or even an amp modeler.
So we would suggest some of the following alternatives: use a mic on your amp and plug it into myMix, use an amp modeler directly into myMix, use the recording output or your amp (if it has one) directly into myMix, or plug your guitar into a direct box, then into myMix.

Does myMix require an Ethernet switch?
A system that only uses two myMix units does not require an Ethernet switch.
Simply connect the units directly to each other with an Ethernet cable.
Three or more myMix units require an Ethernet switch.
What type of Ethernet switch do I need for a myMix system?
I want to buy a POE switch for myMix, what should I look for?
myMix uses standard, off-the-shelf Ethernet switches, not pricey proprietary switches used by other products.
You can use either standard switches, or, if you want to completely eliminate the power supply, you can use a switch that provides Power-Over-Ethernet (POE).
While POE switches are more expensive than normal switches they provide an additional level of convenience.
Just make sure the POE switch you choose is capable of providing 15 continuous (not max) watts to each myMix connected to the switch.
We’ve found that you really need to pay attention to the specs provided by the POE switch manufacturer.
If you aren’t sure, contact the manufacturer and make sure the switch is capable of providing a continuous 15 watts to each myMix.
Due to the constantly evolving nature of network products we have a hard time recommending any one particular POE switch.
We can, however, confidently say that you get what you pay for.
Can I use have a myMix system where some units are powered by the included power supply and some are powered by POE?
If you are using a switch that is half POE and half non-POE it is no problem to mix them on a system.
I see a lot of switches with 4 POE ports and 4 non-POE ports.
Are there any POE switches with 8 POE ports?
They exist, you just need to take a little time to search.
Most computer supply retailers carry a wide variety of switches at numerous price points.
We can’t stress enough the need to check the specs and make sure you are getting 15 continuous watts to each myMix requiring POE.

How do I save my settings to profiles?
Once you have recalled a profile, any change you make to your myMix is automatically updated in the current profile.
So, you don’t really have to do anything to save your settings.
Why would one ever want to select Input type Mono, and not just leave dual mono and simply not using the spare input?
Because in mono only one input channel appears in every unit.
It just keeps the user interface free of any extraneous unused channels.
How does the master EQ work?
The Master Equalizer is a four band parametric with selectable high and low shelving, adjustable Q and frequencies.
It affects both the line and headphone outputs.
Do I need the master EQ?
If you didn’t understand any of the language in the answer to the question above, then you don’t need it.
If you do understand, then you will realize the Master Equalizer gives you the opportunity to ring out wedges, add bass to sub-par headphones, liven up a dull set of in-ear buds, or even tune a main PA system to a room.
Save it in a different profile so you don’t have to repeat the process every time you change output devices, or rooms.
How many effects are on myMix?
There is one global effect in myMix that has the option of small, medium, or large room or hall reverbs, or adjustable delay.
You can send as much of each channel into the effect as you desire on the main mix page.

Mixen met myMix
Met myMix maak je heel eenvoudig, via een intuïtieve muzikantvriendelijke interface, tot acht afzonderlijke stereomixen van maximaal zestien geluidssporen.
Je hoeft niet langer te onthouden wie op een verwarrend mengpaneel op welk kanaal zit – op myMix geef je elke unit en elke input een eigen naam.
Mixen is daarna alleen een kwestie van de namen of instrumenten te vinden die je wilt bijregelen, het kanaal te selecteren, en vervolgens Volume, Tone, Pan en Send level van het effect te wijzigen.
Daarnaast kan elk kanaal apart in Mute of Solo worden geschakeld en met de master Mute leg je alle kanalen tegelijk het zwijgen op.
Dus als je die gitaar hard wilt, zet je die gewoon hard.
Als je de zanger wilt omhangen met een mijlenlange Hall reverb, toets je die er even overheen.

Elke wijziging in je mix wordt steeds dadelijk opgeslagen in het actieve profiel.
Als je in verschillende bands speelt, kun je voor elke gig een apart profiel aanmaken.
En mocht de stroom uitvallen, kun je erop rekenen dat je myMix weer zal opstarten onder de laatstgekozen configuratie.
Opnemen met myMix
Zodra je doorhebt hoe leuk het is om je eigen mix te maken, zul je willen horen hoeveel beter de band nu klinkt.
Al eens een geweldig idee gehad tijdens een repetitie en het dan twee weken later helemaal vergeten?
Hoe cool zou het zijn om in het weekend een optreden op te nemen en dat tegen maandag klaar te hebben voor je fans?
myMix is het gedroomde toestel om tijdens de repetitie ideeën op te nemen, een optreden in de plaatselijke club op te slaan, of zelfs je volgende album vorm te geven.
Op de optionele micro SD, standaard SD of SDHC kaarten kunnen tot 18 tracks 24bits, 48kHz wav-audiobestanden met tijdstempel worden opgenomen.
Zodra je de REC-toets hebt ingedrukt, wordt een nieuwe sessiemap gecreëerd en wordt elk signaal zonder toegevoegde effecten rechtstreeks vanaf de voorversterker op een apart spoor opgenomen.

Alleen moet je dan wel weten dat je een compromis zult moeten sluiten wat je ideale mix betreft – precies het probleem waarop myMix een antwoord biedt.
Kan ik de koptelefoonuitgangen tegelijk met de lijnuitgangen gebruiken?
Ja.
Het signaal is voor beide outputs identiek.
Als je dus oortelefoontjes wilt gebruiken in combinatie met floormonitors, dan kan dat zonder meer.
Onze band bestaat uit vier muzikanten met zeven microfoons/instrumenten, maar onze toetsenist heeft drie kanalen nodig.
Op elke myMix zitten maar twee ingangen – hoe kunnen we dat derde kanaal aansluiten?
Als een van de muzikanten van slechts één ingang gebruik maakt, kun je het derde kanaal van de toetsenist gewoon op de ongebruikte input aansluiten.
Als we onze instrumenten/microfoons rechtstreeks op een myMix aansluiten, hoe sturen we het signaal dan naar de FoH-console?
Er zijn een paar manieren om jullie output aan te sluiten op de zaalmixconsole.
Je kunt vanaf de bron een Y-kabel gebruiken waarvan je het ene eind op een myMix aansluit en het andere op de console.
Je kunt hiervoor ook een splitter gebruiken; je plugt de bron dan in op de splitter en stuurt vervolgens één output naar een myMix en de andere naar de FoH-console.
Afhankelijk van de situatie kun je zelfs een extra myMix gebruiken als FoH-mixer en de kabelslang en console geheel achterwege laten.
Welk type van hoofdtelefoons bevelen jullie aan – is er iets speciaals waar ik op moet letten?
De selectie van een koptelefoon is een erg persoonlijke zaak.
Naast persoonlijke voorkeuren voor bepaalde merken, groottes, kleuren enz. moet je er ook rekening mee houden dat de koptelefoon een impedantie moet hebben tussen **** en *** om makkelijk een voldoende hoog volume te kunnen produceren.
Tijdens de bètatests waarbij de muzikanten voor monitoring via koptelefoons opteerden, hebben we alles gezien – van gesofisticeerde studiohoofdtelefoons tot de goedkoopste mp3-setjes.
Met de master-EQ van myMix kun je het stereosignaal maximaal optimaliseren voor de koptelefoon die je hebt gekozen.
Onze zanger gebruikt een systeem met oortelefoontjes maar onze gitarist wil zijn floormonitor gebruiken – kunnen wij die allebei gebruiken met myMix?
Absoluut.
myMix beperkt je helemaal niet tot een muisstille repetitieomgeving waarin iedereen wordt gedwongen koptelefoons te gebruiken.
En ook hier geldt dat aan de hand van de myMix master-EQ jullie gitarist zijn monitor optimaal kan afstellen en jullie zanger zijn oortelefoontjes.
Kan ik mijn gitaar rechtstreeks inpluggen in een myMix of heb ik een gitaarversterker nodig?
Dat kun je doen, maar wij raden het niet aan.
De impedantie van de myMix-inputs is eigenlijk bedoeld voor microfoon- en line-input, niet voor instrumenten.
Wij hebben ondervonden dat erg weinig gitaristen het geluid van een rechtstreeks ingeplugde gitaar verkiezen boven dat van een versterker of zelfs een modeler.
Daarom suggereren wij de volgende alternatieven: plaats een microfoon voor je versterker en sluit die aan op myMix, sluit een modeler rechtstreeks aan op myMix, stuur het opname- of versterkersignaal (indien mogelijk) rechtstreeks naar myMix, of plug je gitaar in op een DI-box en sluit deze aan op myMix.
Netwerk
Heb ik voor myMix een ethernetswitch nodig?
Voor een netwerk met slechts twee myMix-units heb je geen ethernetschakelaar nodig.
Je kunt de twee units rechtstreeks met elkaar verbinden met een ethernetkabel.
Voor drie of meer myMix-units heb je wel een ethernetswitch nodig.
Welk type van ethernetschakelaar heb ik nodig voor mijn myMix-systeem?
Ik wil een PoE-switch kopen voor mijn myMix – waarop moet ik letten?
Voor myMix kun je de gewone ethernetschakelaars uit de handel gebruiken; de dure switches die door andere producten worden gebruikt, heb je niet nodig.
Je hebt hierbij de keuze tussen standaardschakelaars en PoE-schakelaars, die voor fantoomvoeding zorgen als je de adaptor liever achterwege laat.
Hoewel PoE-schakelaars iets duurder zijn dan de gewone, bieden zij toch extra gebruiksgemak.
Je moet er wel voor zorgen dat de PoE-switch die je kiest een continu (niet piek-) vermogen van 15 watt kan leveren aan elke myMix die op de switch is aangesloten.
Uit ondervinding weten we dat je hiervoor echt moet letten op de specificaties van de fabrikant van de PoE-switch.
Als je twijfelt, neem je contact op met de fabrikant om er zeker van te zijn dat de schakelaar aan elke myMix-unit een continu vermogen van 15 watt kan leveren.
Omdat de markt van netwerkproducten voortdurend evolueert, vinden we het een hachelijke zaak je één bepaalde PoE-schakelaar aan te bevelen.
Wel kunnen we veilig stellen dat je waar krijgt voor je geld.
Kan ik een myMix-systeem gebruiken waarin sommige units worden gevoed via de bijgeleverde adaptor en andere via fantoomvoeding over het ethernet (PoE)?
Als je een schakelaar gebruikt die half PoE en half niet-PoE is, kun je de units probleemloos op hetzelfde systeem gebruiken.
Ik heb gemerkt dat veel ethernetschakelaars 4 PoE en 4 niet-PoE aansluitingen hebben.
Bestaan er ook PoE-switches met 8 PoE aansluitingen?
Die bestaan, je moet er gewoon wat langer naar zoeken.
In de meeste computerzaken vind je een ruime verscheidenheid aan schakelaars tegen sterk verschillende prijzen.
Wij kunnen hierbij niet genoeg benadrukken dat je op de specificaties van de fabrikant moet letten om er zeker van te zijn dat elke myMix-unit die door PoE wordt gevoed van een continu vermogen van 15 watt wordt voorzien.

Hoe sla ik mijn instellingen op in een profiel?
Telkens als je een profiel gebruikt, worden alle wijzigingen die je op je myMix maakt automatisch in het huidige profiel opgeslagen.
Dus hoef je eigenlijk helemaal niets te doen om je instellingen op te slaan.
Waarom zou iemand ooit Mono selecteren onder Input Mode in plaats van Dual Mono te gebruiken en de extra ingang ongebruikt te laten?
Omdat in Mono in elke unit maar één inputkanaal verschijnt.
Daardoor wordt de interface vrijgehouden van overbodige kanalen.
Hoe werkt de master-EQ?
De master-EQ is een 4-bands parametrische equalizer met selecteerbare shelving voor hoog en laag, regelbare Q en frequenties.
De output naar zowel line als koptelefoon wordt erdoor bijgesteld.
Heb ik de master-EQ wel nodig?
Als je niets begrepen hebt van de termen in het hierboven gegeven antwoord, dan heb je hem niet nodig.
Als die begrippen je daarentegen wel bekend zijn, zie je zo dat de master-EQ je in staat stelt om floormonitors er helemaal te doen uitspringen, bassen te versterken in ondermaatse koptelefoons, een lam setje oortelefoons wat leven in te blazen, of zelfs om een PA-systeem op een bepaalde ruimte af te stellen.
Sla alles gewoon op in een eigen profiel en je hoeft de afstelling niet over te doen telkens als je voor andere apparatuur kiest, of in een andere ruimte speelt.
Hoeveel effecten zitten er in een myMix-toestel?
myMix beschikt over één effect voor alle kanalen dat kan worden ingesteld op de reverbs Hall of Room (small, medium, large), of op een instelbare delay.
In de mix op het hoofdscherm kun je bepalen hoeveel je van elk kanaal naar het effect stuurt.

Preamble
What is ITIL®?
ITIL (IT Infrastructure Library) is the most widely accepted approach to IT service management in the world.
ITIL provides a cohesive set of best practice, drawn from public and private sectors internationally.
It is supported by a comprehensive qualification scheme, accredited training organizations (ATOs), and implementation and assessment tools.
The best-practice processes promoted in ITIL are supported by the international standard for IT service management, ISO/IEC 20000.
ITIL is the only consistent and comprehensive documentation of best practice for IT service management and is used by hundreds of organizations around the world.
ITIL consists of a series of publications giving guidance on the provision of quality IT services, and on the environment needed to support IT.
ITIL has been developed in recognition that organizations are becoming increasingly dependent on IT in order to satisfy their corporate aims and meet their business needs.
This leads to an increased requirement for high-quality IT services.
ITIL was last refreshed in 2007.
Content for the latest update will shortly enter development.
Agreed changes result from a survey of ATOs, an analysis of change control requests logged with The Stationery Office (TSO), and the completion of a scoping exercise.
Purpose of this document
This document gives an overview of the approach to the present update of the ITIL V3 core publications.
It outlines the scope, plans and governance structure of the update work.
It also shows the way in which the proposed structure and scope supports improvements recommended by the ITIL Change Advisory Board.
The Board analysed issues logged between the V3 publication date and November 2009.
Finally, an approximate guide to development timescales is given.

1 Introduction
On 8 November 2004, OGC launched a six-month project to define the scope and development plans for a refreshed version of ITIL best-practice guidance.
OGC, with assistance from numerous organizations and individuals, undertook an extensive public consultation to gain the opinions of ITIL users, vendors and educators around the world.
The consultations were very successful in conveying to the project team the views of the information technology service management (ITSM) community.
There was a high degree of consensus, and a summary of the findings formed the scope for what would become Version 3 of ITIL.
The scoping document was published in June 2006.
We believe that basic market needs have not changed significantly since then.
However, since publication in May 2007, the ITSM community has had time to digest and use ITIL Version 3, and there have been some fair criticisms fed back to OGC.
Hundreds of issues have been logged under change control on the best-management-practice website (www.best-management-practice.com).
Following analysis of these, together with views transmitted back to OGC, TSO and APMG from trainers and users, the ITIL Change Advisory Board (CAB) and OGC have agreed that the effectiveness and usefulness of ITIL would be improved by providing an updated Version 3.
2 Aims of the update
The principal aims of the project to update ITIL V3 are to:
Resolve any errors or inconsistencies in the text and diagrams, both in content and presentation
Improve the publication by addressing issues raised in the change control log, as analysed and recommended by the CAB and approved by OGC.
These are largely to do with clarity, consistency, correctness and completeness
Address suggestions for change made by the training community to make ITIL easier to teach
Review the Service Strategy publication to ensure that the concepts are explained in the clearest, most concise and accessible way possible.
There is no notion of simplifying the concepts; rather, improving the exposition of the ideas.
No new concepts or practices will be introduced, and no existing ones will be abandoned.
Where new content is introduced, it will be for completeness, to redress an imbalance in the level of detail, or as part of restructuring for consistency.
2.1 In scope
Look at remedying inconsistencies within the content of the five books:
Roles need to be made consistent across the books, ensuring that the activities apply only to one role
Clarify that the organizational structures given as examples are indicative rather than prescriptive
Restructure the guidance to ensure that all five publications are organized in the same way:
Ensure that each process has goals, purpose and objectives
Look at how the processes are dealt with and ensure a common treatment for all
Ensure that the books are aligned, where relevant, with guidance in MSP™, M_o_R®, PRINCE2® and P3O®.
Give clear explanations and descriptions of roles and responsibilities
Standardize the use of glossary definitions within the five titles.
Ensure that the explanations in the text align with those in the glossary
Update the glossary to take account of the comments made in the Change Control Log
Examine the definition and usage of the roles of Product Manager and Service Owner
Ensure that service catalogue manager appears within Service Operation
Redesign the content according to OGC’s updated style guidelines.
2.2 Out of scope
Any changes which would invalidate the current use of ITIL, whether by organizations which have adopted its use or by individuals who have taken an ITIL qualification and are currently using the method in their workplace.
3 Governance and structure of the development team
For the Version 3 refresh development in 2006, the model used was authors working alongside mentors.
This model will be used in the update, with authors and mentors working together, reporting to the Project Board.
The Governance structure is as follows:
Authors have been recruited through the Call for Participants document.
There will be a single author for each book, and mentors will be assigned to one or more books, often with other responsibilities, to ensure compatibility, harmony and consistency.
The diagram below shows the relationship between these team members.
The Mentors play an important role in the structure.
They have to ensure consistency across the updated books.
Therefore mentor posts were filled by invitation to members of the team original V3 development team.
The reporting route for all individuals is via the relevant book or continuity mentor to the whole project mentor.
Work packages will be created for each book.
They will contain a product description and a detailed scope, including a relevant list of issues recommended for resolution by the CAB.
Products will be reviewed by the Review Group for fitness for purpose.
In effect, this means determining whether they comply with the product description and have satisfactorily resolved all the outstanding issues.
The Review Group is intended to be representative of the ITIL community and will comprise:
Small, medium and large public and private sector users
Vendors
Consultants
Training organizations
International reviewers
Reviewers have also been recruited via the Call for Participants document (www.best-management-practice.com/gempdf/OGC_Call_for_Participants_ITIL_Update_October_2009.pdf) with the intention to create a balanced and representative Review Group.
Individuals may be asked to comment on ideas, proposals, outlines or partial products at any time.
There will also be two formal reviews of each of the six books.
Any particular individual may be asked to review just one book in depth, or the whole set specifically for consistency.
Once the core books are finalized, the Introduction will be updated to match.
This activity must be done at this time, as the Introduction is entirely derivative.
Two rounds of review of the Introduction will be completed.
4 Categories of change
The project mandate (www.best-management-practice.com/gempdf/ITIL_Mandate_for_Change_0909.pdf) is to correct errors, remove inconsistencies and improve clarity and structure.
The Work Instructions to be given to each author will list and describe in detail each relevant issue from the change control log and the CAB’s recommendation for action.
More general criticisms – for example, from the ATO survey – will be passed on in a briefing from the mentors.
It is considered likely that authors, in addressing these various concerns, will discover issues of their own with the material.
We would expect them to address these too.
They will be able to go to their mentor(s), the CAB or to reviewers for views, opinions and guidance.
Many of the change control log issues were identified as typos or errors.
Any unambiguous errors have been sent to TSO Editorial to change, so that the starting point for the update development work will be a clean version of the V3 Word document with obvious errors corrected.
TSO Editorial has also reduced the excessive and inconsistent use of initial capitals on many of the terms, and inserted a revised glossary which reflects the changes approved by the CAB.
Other issues for the development team fall into the following categories:
4.1 Correction
Obvious errors will be addressed.
4.2 Clarity
The new author will ensure such passages are easier to understand and free from ambiguities or confusing statements and references.
They will also receive guidelines on writing international English (note that this is not American English).
By this we mean plain English (with -ize verbal endings in preference to -ise where both spellings are in use) that is comprehensible not only to native English speakers, but also to people who use English as a business language, or speak English as a second language.
This largely means avoidance of uncommon words, unusual meanings of common words, idioms and lengthy sentences.
Getting this right also means that translation becomes easier.
4.3 Consistency
There are many areas where consistency problems exist in the current books.
Although a common structure was created for all the books during V3 development, there are inconsistencies in the extent and coverage of descriptions of practices, functions, processes, roles and activities which need to be resolved.
One of the more significant criticisms is that V3 does not say enough about roles, and what it does say is patchy.
It will be made clear that ITIL does not lay down definitive job titles, just roles, and that organizational structures given are indicative, not prescriptive.
Roles will be made consistent across the books, and activities must apply only to one role.
The description of roles and the depth of detail must be made consistent.
Processes will be clearly identified, and each described in a consistent way.
There will be one location (the most appropriate one) where each process is described in detail, and elsewhere that description will be referred to.
Inconsistencies in definitions of terms will be resolved and aligned with the glossary.
Further, descriptions of concepts or processes in ITIL will be made consistent with their treatment elsewhere in OGC Best Practice.
For example, risk management in ITIL should align with M_o_R®.
Completeness is an issue, and is being treated as part of consistency.
It is not about addition of new concepts.
Part of the authors’ and mentors’ responsibility will be to ensure that each topic contains the right amount of detail, and comparable items – role descriptions, processes etc. – are all present and have comparable detail consistently across all books.
In summary, the author will resolve errors or inconsistencies of detail or extent in text, tables and diagrams, changing, removing or adding material as appropriate.
Mentors and the technical continuity editor will ensure consistency in changes across the series.
4.4 Diagrams
In some cases, diagrams are in error, contradict each other or the text, are not referenced by the text or are repeated in another book, but drawn differently.
Authors will work with the technical continuity editor to ensure that all diagrams are drawn to common standards, are consistent, and are referenced in the text.
As part of improving clarity, some diagrams may be changed, removed or added.
4.5 Service Strategy
Concern has been voiced that Service Strategy is much more challenging for readers than the other books.
OGC required V3 authors to write plain concise international English, but there is room for improvement and this will be encouraged in the update.
Reading and understanding are two different aspects of the perception of a difficult text.
Of all the books in V3, Service Strategy held the most new material.
It included a lot of business-related concepts that were new to many readers at that time, but have since been largely digested and accepted.
However, many respondents still feel that that Service Strategy is too discursive and not instructive enough; that the processes are not clearly identified; and that the treatment of the stages of strategy formulation, leading to the specification of IT services, would benefit from clarification.
Therefore, OGC is giving the Service Strategy update author greater freedom than the other authors to clarify the text and sharpen the presentation.
This work will be carefully appraised, and no changes will be accepted that are not deemed to be improvements.
It probably bears repeating that all OGC desires from this exercise is an improvement in the presentation and exposition of Service Strategy, and thus its usability – not a simplification of the concepts.
5 Consequential changes
Many people will be concerned about how the changes to ITIL will affect other publications and the qualification scheme as well as applications and services based on ITIL.
Any impact is likely to be minor.
5.1 Other publications
Improvements in the core texts will be cascaded first to the Introduction, as part of this project.
Later, other titles will be revised in accordance with the updated ITIL.
There is no schedule available at present.
It is not expected that any of the changes to ITIL resulting from the update will render any current V3 publications seriously incorrect.
The reason for revision would be to improve derivative works in terms of clarity, consistency, improved definitions and the latest diagrams.
5.2 Qualification scheme
Some of the changes are expected to make ITIL easier to teach, and will gradually be incorporated into teaching materials.
There is no intention to change the qualification structure resulting from the update.
Consequential changes required to syllabuses and exams are expected to be minor.
This is because the exams test understanding of the concepts and practices, and these will not be changed.
5.3 Third-party applications
There are many software products, such as service desk support applications, that embody the processes described in ITIL.
Again, it is not expected that the changes in the update will move any existing products out of alignment with ITIL.
Suppliers will determine if there is any benefit in introducing any changes that could be made to their products on an individual basis.
5.4 Commercial ITIL-based IT service providers
ITIL-based providers of IT services should not be affected by the changes.
Some issues may be resolved for them, where insufficient detail was given previously in ITIL, enabling them to improve their service.
Customers will not be affected.
6 Core library translation
OGC and the project team wish to see the fruits of the update project made available globally in many languages as early as possible.
The glossary is the foundation stone upon which all translations are constructed.
Because of the drive for consistency in definitions of terms, it is inevitable that some definitions will change.
The first task therefore will be to roll out a revised glossary for each language in which ITIL is currently published.
On a slower timescale the books will be revised in accordance with the revised glossary and the new English text.

ITIL Version 3 is to be updated to provide improvements in presentation
Why are we doing this?
As part of best management practice, a change control log was made available publicly to provide a feedback mechanism from the ITIL community.
Users of ITIL have made numerous suggestions for improvement.
These include minor corrections to text and diagrams, clarifications and clearer explanations of difficult concepts.
Users also pointed out the need for consistency in use of terms and diagrams.
These were all seen as valuable improvements by the CAB, and OGC wishes to include them in an updated release of the books – still Version 3, but with cosmetic, editorial and consistency improvements.
None of this will affect the way you use ITIL, but just improve the communication of ITIL concepts, which themselves remain unchanged.
Below we have tried to anticipate and answer the questions you may have.

Q1 Why do we need a new version of ITIL?
Version 3 was such a change and we don’t want another upheaval so soon.
A1 This is not a new version but an update to Version 3 to make it more usable.
There will be no new concepts.
All we are doing is taking out errors and inconsistencies and in some places, making the text easier to understand.
The ITIL Change Advisory Board recommended an update after considering all the issues submitted to the Change Control Log www.best-management-practice.com/ChangeLog, as well as wider feedback from the wider ITIL community of practitioners, trainers and users.
Q2 So this is Version 4?
A2 No. It is an update.
Think of it as Version 3.1 if you like.
It is the first official release to Version 3.
Q3 Can I have more detail on the scope of the update?
A3 It is all about improving consistency, accessibility and usability of the core publications, including the Introduction to the Service Lifecycle.
We are seeking to improve the coverage and descriptions of roles and responsibilities, improve process descriptions and ensure alignment with MSP®, M_o_R®, PRINCE2™ and P3O®.
We will also standardize definitions between books and align them with the glossary, updating where necessary, and finally, remove inconsistencies in content and structure.
In Service Strategy particularly, explanations will be made more straightforward and accessible where appropriate.
We do not intend to add any new concepts or do anything to invalidate the current Version 3 guidance or implementations or qualifications based on it.
Q4 When will the updated publications be available?
A4 On current plans, we expect to publish in early 2011.
Q5 What effect will the update have on qualifications?
With Version 3, we saw a complete restructuring.
A5 Inevitably, the changes to the ITIL text and diagrams will cascade to training materials, but only to simplify and improve them.
There is no intention at this time to change either the qualification structure or the scope of each qualification because of the update.
Existing certificates that individuals hold will not become out of date because the concepts, roles and processes are not changing; only the descriptions of them will be improved.
Q6 If the changes you make are based on what anyone might have put on the Change Control Log, and whatever comments might have come in from the public, how do I know that the new ITIL will still be global-class best practice?
A6 You can be reassured on that point because none of the changes suggested from any source will be actioned without full review from internationally recognized experts in ITSM.
Also, of course, the concepts and scope of ITIL are not changing so no new or dubious practices will be allowed to creep in.
Q7 Who is doing this work and how is it being managed?
A7 In order to assure the highest quality guidance, OGC and TSO will be using key individuals with a range of experience and expertise in ITIL and IT Service Management.
For each of the books there will be an author to write the updates against the Mandate for Change and the Product Description developed from the issues identified by the Change Control Log and the Change Advisory Board (CAB).
Each author will be supported by a team of three mentors and a Technical Continuity Editor, from the original V3 authoring team.
The role of the mentors is to support and coach the authors, but also to assure continuity and consistency with the existing Version 3, and across all the updated publications.
The Technical Continuity Editor will ensure diagrams are consistent with text and with each other across the library, and also that definitions are consistent in the text and glossary.
The final drafts will be considered by a Review Group comprising Users, Trainers and CAB members, who will ensure the new books comply with the initial detailed Product Descriptions agreed by the authors, mentors and project board.
The day-to-day management of the project will be by TSO, on behalf of OGC, and control of the project will reside with a Project Board constituted by OGC.
The Project Board is made up of a project executive from OGC, a project manager and a team manager from TSO, and two project assurance roles are filled by a member of OGC and a member of APMG Qualifications Team.
The senior user role is filled by an itSMFI Board member and the two senior suppliers roles are represented by members of TSO and APMG.

Q8 I have Version 3 projects underway.
How should I respond to the new update?
A8 For ITIL Version 3 users, the impact on current projects should be negligible, as the content of the guidance will not change.
Q9 Will the update to ITIL affect the alignment with International Standards, in particular ISO/IEC 20000?
A9 As the scope and content of ITIL are not changing, only the way it is presented, the update will not affect the present alignment of ITIL with ISO ITSM standards, but of course, the standards too are continually evolving.
ISO standards are developed by effort and consensus of member countries and are quite correctly kept independent of best practice frameworks such as ITIL.
Neither OGC nor TSO can directly influence the content or direction of ISO/IEC 20000 development.
However, both organizations are represented on and thus able to offer their views to the BSI committee that creates the British contribution to ISO/IEC 20000 direction and development.
Further, there is a desire on the part of ISO to explain how ISO/IEC 20000 works harmoniously with leading best practice frameworks.
In response to an internal study, ISO has recently established an adhoc mapping group at SC7 level, initially for one year, to create mappings of ISO/IEC 20000 to ITIL and COBIT and possibly to other standards, methods and frameworks.
The group is chaired by Dr Jenny Dugmore, Convener of ISO JTC1/SC7 Working Group 25 (ITSM) and Chair of the BSI ITSM Committee.
OGC regards this as a positive development and will cooperate with the group as appropriate.
Q10 What will be the impact on the approved tools scheme?
A10 This update should not affect the tool vendors as the scheme is process based and major changes to the processes are out of the scope of this update.
Any impact will be minor.
The scheme is administered by APMG, part of Best Management Practice which comprises OGC, TSO and the APM Group.
Q11 Do other key players like itSMF think the update is a good idea or would they have preferred a period of stability?
A11 itSMFI have stated...“The update of the existing ITIL Version 3 is ITIL in practice.
An existing service – the core publications – is getting updated because of service requests that have been expressed by users and customers of this service.
This shows as well that best practices are evolving and that the feedback of the user community is adapted.”
Q12 How soon after UK publication will we see translated versions, and what will be the priority languages?
A12 The priority languages are Brazilian Portuguese, French, German, Japanese and Spanish.
These will be available as soon as possible after the updated UK edition is published.
Q13 How soon after UK publication will we see the changes reflected in qualifications in other languages and what will be the priority languages?
A13 See also questions 5 and 12.
There is no intent to change the syllabuses or the qualifications structure and there is likely to be little or no change to exam questions.
The most likely impact of the update on the qualification scheme will to the training materials.
Q14 Will the changes to ITIL affect the way I use it with other best practice frameworks, such as COBIT™?
A14 As the scope, roles and processes in ITIL will not change, relationships with procedures based on other best practice guidance should not be affected.
Hopefully, the improved explanations in the new ITIL will clarify and enhance the interworking of ITIL and other best practices.
Q16 You talk about “improved accessibility”, “more straightforward explanations” etc. Is this code for the fact you are “dumbing down” ITIL in order to reach more people?
A16 A lot of people would argue that ITIL could be simpler and easier to understand.
Yes, we are trying to make it as simple as it can be, but no simpler.
We will not abandon or change any of the concepts.
The aim of this update is to explain things better and remove inconsistencies where they have been found.
ITIL content is not changing; the presentation of that content will improve.
Q17 How can you be sure that the new authors will not change the concepts in Version 3?
They will have their own ideas.
A17 The point of using new authors is not to give them carte blanche to change ITIL as they wish.
It is to gain their new perspective as well as their ideas for the way the text can be improved to meet the new product descriptions.
Maintaining the purity of Version 3 concepts, i.e. continuity from Version 3, is a prime responsibility of the mentors, who will all have either been Version 3 authors or worked on Version 3 development in a key capacity.
Finally, the project board will also consider the views of the Review Group before authorizing publication, so any concerns will have been raised and considered.
Q18 I do not currently use ITIL as the framework for my ITSM service offerings.
Does this update make ITIL more attractive to me?
A18 ITIL Version 3 describes the best approaches to ITSM, endorsed by industry experts globally.
Following ITIL guidance will allow you to offer well planned, effective, responsive, predictable and manageable services, allowing the IT provider to be more efficient and effective, and the business to be more productive.
The new update will add to the value proposition by improving both the communication of ITIL ideas and concepts, and the integration and cohesiveness of the whole.
Q19 Why should I invest in ITIL in the middle of a recession?
A19 ITIL gives you the ability to plan and proactively manage your IT Services effectively and most importantly, to predict what you need to do to support the changing business.
The degree of control over effective IT service provision possible through ITIL will support better business investment analysis and decision making.

Voorwoord
Wat is ITIL®?
ITIL (IT Infrastructure Library) is wereldwijd de meest gangbare benadering van IT service management.
ITIL biedt een samenhangend corpus van best practices die werden overgenomen uit zowel openbare als privésectoren uit verschillende landen.
De ITIL-leidraad wordt ondersteund door een allesomvattende kwalificatieregeling, opleidingen door geaccrediteerde ATO’s, en implementatie- en kwaliteitsbewakingstools.
De processen voor best practices die in ITIL worden aangevoerd, worden onderschreven door de internationale norm voor IT service management, ISO/IEC 20000.
ITIL is de enige consistente en allesomvattende documentatie van best practices voor IT service management en wordt gebruikt door honderden organisaties over de gehele wereld.
ITIL bestaat uit een reeks publicaties die als leidraad dienen bij het aanbieden van kwaliteitsdiensten in de IT-sector, en bij het creëren van een optimale IT-omgeving.
ITIL werd ontwikkeld als antwoord op de toenemende afhankelijkheid van informatietechnologie die vele organisaties ondervinden nodig te hebben voor de realisatie van hun bedrijfsdoeleinden.
Dit heeft aanleiding gegeven tot een verhoogde vraag naar hoogkwalitatieve IT-dienstverlening.
ITIL werd het laatst bijgewerkt in 2007.
De inhoud van de nieuwste update zal zeer binnenkort de ontwikkelingsfase bereiken.
Tot de reeds overeengekomen wijzigingen werd beslist na een enquête onder de ATO’s, een analyse van de wijzigingsverzoeken die aan The Stationery Office (TSO) werden overgemaakt, en het afronden van een onderzoek naar de reikwijdte van de leidraad.
Doel van dit document
In dit document wordt een overzicht gegeven van de benadering van de huidige update van de kernpublicaties van ITIL v3.
Het biedt een schets van de reikwijdte, de planning en de beheerstructuur van het werk aan de update.
Ook wordt getoond hoe de voorgestelde structuur en reikwijdte de verbeteringen zal verwezenlijken die door de ITIL Change Advisory Board werden aanbevolen.
De CAB heeft alle problemen geanalyseerd die in het logboek werden gemeld tussen de publicatiedatum van versie 3 en november 2009.
Ten slotte wordt een tentatief tijdschema gegeven voor de verdere ontwikkeling.
Dankbetuiging
De TSO en de Office of Government Commerce (OGC) wensen hun erkentelijkheid uit te drukken jegens de volgende personen en organisaties voor hun bijdrage aan het onderzoek naar de reikwijdte van de update van ITIL v3.
Al deze participanten hebben tijd noch moeite gespaard om ervoor te zorgen dat de reikwijdte van de update rekening houdt met reële problemen in het bestaande materiaal en dat de ITIL best practices verbeterd werden.

1 Inleiding
Op 8 november 2004 startte de OGC een project, dat zes maanden moest duren, om de reikwijdte en ontwikkelingsplannen te definiëren voor een vernieuwde versie van de ITIL-leidraad voor best practices.
Bijgestaan door talrijke organisaties en individuele personen begon de OGC een uitgebreide publieke consultatieronde om wereldwijd naar de mening van ITIL-gebruikers, -verkopers en -trainers te vragen.
De consultatieronde leverde het projectteam een gedroomd inzicht op in de zienswijzen die leven in de ITSM-gemeenschap.
Er was een sterke consensus, en een samenvatting van de bevindingen vormde de grondslag van wat ITIL versie 3 zou worden.
Het basisdocument werd in juni 2006 gepubliceerd.
Wij menen dat de fundamentele behoeften van de markt sedertdien geen significante wijzigingen hebben ondergaan.
Sinds de publicatie in mei 2007 heeft de ITSM- gemeenschap evenwel ruimschoots de tijd gehad ITIL v3 in de praktijk te testen en is de OGC enige terechte kritiek voorgelegd.
Honderden aanmerkingen werden in het logboek genoteerd op de best-management-practice website (www.best-management-practice.com).
Na analyse van deze kritiek en van opmerkingen, van trainers en gebruikers, die werden doorgegeven aan de OGC, de TSO en de APMG, besloten de ITIL Change Advisory Board (CAB) en de OGC dat de efficiëntie en bruikbaarheid van ITIL baat zou hebben bij een update van versie 3.
2 Doeleinden van de update
De hoofddoelen van het updateproject voor ITIL v3 zijn:
Het wegwerken van fouten en inconsistenties in de tekst en diagrammen, zowel in de inhoud als in de presentatie
Het verbeteren van de publicatie door een antwoord te bieden op de aanmerkingen uit het logboek, zoals geanalyseerd en aanbevolen door de CAB en goedgekeurd door de OGC.
Deze hebben voornamelijk betrekking op duidelijkheid, consistentie, correctheid en volledigheid
Het verwerken van suggesties tot wijziging, gemaakt door trainers, om het aanleren van ITIL makkelijker te maken
Het opnieuw bekijken van de Service Strategy publicatie om ervoor te zorgen dat de concepten worden uitgelegd op een zo heldere, beknopte en toegankelijke manier als mogelijk is.
Het is niet in het minst de bedoeling de concepten te simplificeren; veeleer moet de uiteenzetting van ideeën worden verbeterd.
Er zullen geen nieuwe concepten of practices worden geïntroduceerd; evenmin zullen er bestaande worden geschrapt.
Waar toch nieuwe inhoud wordt opgenomen, dient deze uitsluitend de volledigheid ten goede te komen, of een onevenwicht in de mate van detailinformatie recht te trekken, of als onderdeel van een herstructurering t.b.v. de consistentie.
2.1 Binnen de reikwijdte
Inconsistenties in de inhoud van de vijf boeken verhelpen:
De rollen moeten over alle boeken consistent worden gemaakt, waarbij erop moet worden toegezien dat bepaalde activiteiten aan slechts één rol worden toegewezen
Verduidelijken dat de organisatorische structuren die als voorbeeld worden gegeven indicatief zijn bedoeld, en niet prescriptief
De leidraad herstructureren zodat de vijf publicaties allemaal op dezelfde manier zijn georganiseerd:
Er moet voor worden gezorgd dat voor elk proces doeleinden, een intentie en objectieven bestaan
Bekijken hoe de processen worden behandeld en ervoor zorgen dat de behandeling van alle processen op een gelijkvormige manier gebeurt
Erop toezien dat op alle relevante plaatsen de boeken in overeenstemming zijn met de leidraden in MSP™, M_o_R®, PRINCE2® en P3O®.
Heldere uitleg en beschrijvingen geven van de rollen en verantwoordelijkheden
Het gebruik van definities uit de verklarende woordenlijst over de vijf titels standaardiseren.
Ervoor zorgen dat de uitleg in de tekst overeenstemt met die in de verklarende woordenlijst
De verklarende woordenlijst bijwerken rekening houdend met de aanmerkingen in het controlelogboek
De definities en het gebruik van de rollen van Product Manager en Service Owner nader onderzoeken
De rol van service catalogue manager moet in Service Operation zijn opgenomen
De inhoud uitlijnen op de bijgewerkte stijlgids van de OGC.
2.2 Buiten de reikwijdte
Alle wijzigingen die het huidige gebruik van ITIL zouden ondergraven, zowel zoals gebruikt door organisaties als door individuele personen aan wie een ITIL-kwalificatie werd toegekend en die momenteel van de methode gebruik maken in hun onderneming.
3 Beheer en structuur van het ontwikkelingsteam
Voor de ontwikkeling van de vernieuwde v3 in 2006 werd een model gebruikt waarin de auteurs werden begeleid door mentors.
Dit model zal ook voor de update worden gebruikt, met auteurs die samenwerken met mentors, en verslag uitbrengen bij de Projectraad.
De beheerstructuur is als volgt:
Er werden auteurs aangeworven via het Call for Participants document.
Voor elk boek zal één auteur worden aangewezen, en mentors zullen aan een of meer boeken worden toegewezen, vaak met uiteenlopende verantwoordelijkheden, om compatibiliteit, overeenstemming en consistentie te verzekeren.
In het diagram hieronder ziet u de relaties tussen deze teamleden.
De mentors spelen in deze structuur een belangrijke rol.
Zij moeten erop toezien dat de bijgewerkte boeken onderling consistent zijn.
Daarom werd de functie van mentor ingevuld door leden te inviteren uit het oorspronkelijke ontwikkelingsteam voor v3.
Alle betrokken personen doen verslag via de toegewezen boek- of continuïteitsmentor aan de mentor voor het hele project.
Voor elk boek zullen aparte werkpakketten worden aangemaakt.
Daarin wordt een productbeschrijving opgenomen en een gedetailleerde reikwijdte, met inbegrip van een toepasselijke lijst van punten waarvoor de CAB een oplossing heeft gevraagd.
De producten zullen worden geëvalueerd door de Review Group en op hun gebruiksgeschiktheid beoordeeld.
Concreet betekent dit dat wordt nagegaan of zij in overeenstemming zijn met de productbeschrijving en op alle aangehaalde punten een bevredigend antwoord bieden.
De Review Group moet representatief zijn voor de gehele ITIL-gemeenschap en zal bestaan uit:
Gebruikers uit kleine, middelgrote en grote ondernemingen uit de openbare en privésector
Verkopers
Consultants
Opleidingsorganisaties
Internationale revisoren
Ook de aanstelling van revisoren gebeurde via het Call for Participants document (www.best-management-practice.com/gempdf/OGC_Call_for_Participants_ITIL_Update_October_2009.pdf) met de bedoeling een evenwichtige en representatieve Review Group op te zetten.
Aan individuele personen kan worden gevraagd commentaar te geven op ideeën, voorstellen, samenvattingen of partiële producten.
Ook zullen voor elk van de zes boeken twee formele evaluaties worden gemaakt.
Om het even wie kan worden verzocht om een grondige beoordeling van één bepaald boek, of van de hele reeks indien het specifiek om de consistentie gaat.
Zodra de kernpublicaties zijn afgewerkt, zal de Inleiding ermee in overeenstemming worden gebracht.
Dit kan niet vroeger gebeuren aangezien de Inleiding in haar geheel een afgeleide is.
De Inleiding zal twee evaluatierondes doorlopen.
4 Wijzigingscategorieën
Het projectmandaat (www.best-management-practice.com/gempdf/ITIL_Mandate_for_Change_0909.pdf) bestaat uit het corrigeren van fouten, wegwerken van inconsistenties en verbeteren van helderheid en structuur.
De werkinstructies die aan elke auteur zullen worden overhandigd, zullen een lijst en een gedetailleerde beschrijving bevatten van elk relevant punt uit het controlelogboek en de aanbevelingen van de CAB.
Meer algemene opmerkingen – bijvoorbeeld uit de enquête van de ATO – zullen in een briefing door de mentors worden behandeld.
Het wordt waarschijnlijk geacht dat de auteurs tijdens hun werk aan de verschillende punten in het materiaal op nieuwe problemen zullen stuiten.
Wij verwachten dat zij ook deze zullen aanpakken.
Zij kunnen zich daarbij tot hun mentor(s), de CAB of de revisoren richten voor hun mening en verder advies.
Vele van de in het logboek genoteerde aanmerkingen betroffen tikfouten of vergissingen.
Alle onweerlegbare fouten werden voor wijziging voorgelegd bij de TSO Editorial, zodat het startpunt voor de ontwikkeling van de update een schone versie is van het v3 Word-document waaruit alle evidente fouten zijn weggewerkt.
De TSO Editorial heeft ook ingegrepen in het excessieve en inconsistente gebruik van beginhoofdletters voor veel van de termen, en een herziene verklarende woordenlijst bijgevoegd waarin alle wijzigingen werden opgenomen waartoe door de CAB werd besloten.
Andere punten voor het ontwikkelingsteam vallen in de volgende categorieën:
4.1 Correctie
Evidente fouten zullen worden rechtgezet.
4.2 Helderheid
De nieuwe auteur staat ervoor in dat dergelijke passages makkelijker te begrijpen zijn en vrij van dubbelzinnigheden of verwarrende uitspraken en verwijzingen.
Er zullen ook richtlijnen worden uitgevaardigd over het schrijven van internationaal Engels (het weze opgemerkt dat dit niet gelijkstaat aan Amerikaans Engels).
Hiermee bedoelen we gewoon Engels (waarbij de voorkeur wordt gegeven aan uitgangen op -ize als ook een spelling op -ise voorkomt) dat niet alleen begrepen wordt door moedertaalsprekers van het Engels, maar ook door mensen die het Engels als omgangstaal gebruiken in het bedrijfsleven, of het Engels als tweede taal spreken.
In het algemeen betekent dit dat ongewone woorden moeten worden vermeden, of ongebruikelijke betekenissen van gewone woorden, of ook idiomatisch taalgebruik en te lange zinnen.
Zodra dit het geval is, wordt ook de vertaling makkelijker.
4.3 Consistentie
In de bestaande boeken worden op vele plaatsen consistentieproblemen aangetroffen.
Hoewel tijdens de ontwikkeling van versie 3 voor alle boeken een gemeenschappelijke structuur werd gecreëerd, bestaan er inconsistenties in de volledigheid en de behandeling zelf van beschrijvingen van best practices, functies, processen, rollen en activiteiten die moeten worden weggewerkt.
Een van de belangrijker punten van kritiek is dat v3 niet genoeg uitleg geeft bij de rollen, en dat het weinige wat erover gezegd wordt, fragmentarisch is.
Er zal worden verduidelijkt dat ITIL geen definitieve functietitels opgeeft maar alleen rollen, en dat de vermelde organisatorische structuren indicatief zijn en allerminst prescriptief.
De rollen zullen consistent worden gemaakt over alle boeken heen, en activiteiten mogen aan slechts één rol worden toegewezen.
De beschrijving van de rollen en de mate waarin in detail wordt getreden, moeten consistent worden gemaakt.
De processen moeten duidelijk worden geïdentificeerd, en elk proces moet op een consistente manier worden beschreven.
Er mag hooguit één locatie (de meest geschikte) zijn waar elk proces gedetailleerd wordt beschreven; op alle andere plaatsen moet naar deze beschrijving worden verwezen.
Inconsistenties in de definities van termen moeten worden weggewerkt; de definities moeten in overeenstemming worden gebracht met de verklarende woordenlijst.
Voorts moeten de beschrijvingen van concepten of processen in ITIL consistent worden gemaakt met hun behandeling op andere plaatsen in de OGC best practices.
Bijvoorbeeld moet het risicomanagement in ITIL worden uitgelijnd met de M_o_R®.
Volledigheid vormt een probleem op zichzelf, en wordt aangepakt als onderdeel van de consistentie.
Dit gaat niet over de toevoeging van nieuwe concepten.
Het valt onder de verantwoordelijkheid van de auteurs en mentors ervoor te zorgen dat elk onderwerp niet gedetailleerder dan nodig wordt besproken, en dat vergelijkbare items – rolbeschrijvingen, processen enz. – allemaal worden behandeld en dit met een vergelijkbare mate van detailconsistentie over alle boeken heen.
Samengevat betekent dit dat de auteur alle fouten of inconsistenties wegwerkt wat betreft de gedetailleerdheid of de hoeveelheid tekst, tabellen en diagrammen, en hiervoor wijzigingen aanbrengt of materiaal toevoegt of verwijdert zoals aangewezen.
De mentors en de redacteur die instaat voor de technische continuïteit zullen hierbij instaan voor de consistentie van de wijzigingen over hele reeks.
4.4 Diagrammen
Hier en daar staan er fouten in de diagrammen, of spreken zij elkaar of de tekst tegen, of wordt er in de tekst niet naar verwezen, of worden zij overgenomen in een ander boek maar dit in een andere vorm.
De auteurs zullen samenwerken met de redacteur die instaat voor de technische continuïteit om ervoor te zorgen dat alle diagrammen volgens gemeenschappelijke standaarden worden uitgetekend, consistent zijn, en dat ernaar verwezen wordt in de tekst.
Als onderdeel van het verbeteren van de helderheid kunnen sommige diagrammen worden gewijzigd, verwijderd of toegevoegd.
4.5 Service Strategy
Er werd ons meegedeeld dat Service Strategy door de lezers veel moeilijker wordt gevonden dan de andere boeken.
Hoewel de OGC aan de auteurs van versie 3 had gevraagd om een helder en beknopt internationaal Engels te gebruiken, blijft hier ruimte voor verbetering in de update.
Lezen en begrijpen zijn twee verschillende aspecten in de perceptie van een moeilijke tekst.
Van alle boeken in v3 bevatte Service Strategy de grootste hoeveelheid nieuw materiaal.
Dat bestond onder andere uit heel wat bedrijfsgerelateerde concepten die destijds voor vele lezers nieuw waren maar onderhand in brede kring zijn doorgedrongen en geaccepteerd.
Toch vinden vele respondenten nog steeds dat Service Strategy te wijdlopig is en niet instructief genoeg, dat de processen niet helder worden geïdentificeerd, en dat de behandeling van de stadia voor de formulering van een strategie die uitmondt in de specificatie van IT-diensten, baat zou hebben bij een verduidelijking.
Om die reden zal de OGC de auteur van de update van Service Strategy meer dan de andere auteurs de vrijheid laten om de tekst te verhelderen en de presentatie aan te scherpen.
Dit werk zal zorgvuldig worden nagekeken, en er zullen geen wijzigingen worden aanvaard die niet als verbeteringen worden beschouwd.
Het kan mogelijk niet genoeg worden herhaald dat alles wat de OGC verlangt van deze update een verbetering is van de presentatie en het exposé van Service Strategy, en vandaar de bruikbaarheid ervan – en allerminst een simplificatie van de concepten.
5 Indirecte wijzigingen
Nogal wat mensen maken zich misschien zorgen over de mate waarin de wijzigingen aan ITIL andere publicaties of de kwalificatieregeling zullen beïnvloeden, of over de invloed ervan op toepassingen en diensten die op ITIL zijn gebaseerd.
De impact ervan is hoogstwaarschijnlijk miniem.
5.1 Andere publicaties
Verbeteringen in de centrale teksten zullen het eerst zichtbaar worden in de Inleiding, en dit als onderdeel van dit project.
Later zullen ook andere titels in overeenstemming worden gebracht met de bijgewerkte ITIL.
Er bestaat hiervoor op dit ogenblik geen tijdschema.
Het wordt niet verwacht dat er door de wijzigingen aan ITIL die het gevolg zijn van de update in de huidige v3-publicaties ernstige fouten zouden optreden.
Een reden voor herziening zou de verbetering zijn van afgeleide werken wat betreft hun helderheid, consistentie, verbeterde definities en toevoeging van de nieuwste diagrammen.
5.2 Kwalificatieregeling
Van sommige wijzigingen wordt verwacht dat zij ITIL makkelijker aan te leren zullen maken; deze zullen geleidelijk in de lesmaterialen worden opgenomen.
Het is niet de bedoeling dat door de update de kwalificatiestructuur wordt gewijzigd.
Er zouden slechts kleine wijzigingen zijn vereist aan de syllabi en examens.
In de examens wordt immers het begrip van de concepten en best practices gepeild, en aan deze wordt niets veranderd.
5.3 Toepassingen van derden
Er bestaan heel wat softwareproducten, zoals toepassingen voor de helpdesk, die een realisering zijn van ITIL-processen.
Opnieuw wordt niet verwacht dat er door de wijzigingen in de update bestaande producten niet langer in overeenstemming zouden blijken met ITIL.
De leveranciers van deze producten zullen zelf uitmaken of zij er baat bij hebben bepaalde wijzigingen door te voeren.
5.4 Commerciële IT-providers onder ITIL
IT-providers die volgens de ITIL-leidraad werken zouden van de wijzigingen geen invloed mogen ondervinden.
Misschien raken sommige problemen opgelost voor ze, bijvoorbeeld waar in vroegere versies van ITIL onvoldoende informatie werd gegeven, waardoor zij nu hun dienstverlening kunnen verbeteren.
De klanten zullen niet de minste invloed ondervinden.
6 Vertaling van de kernbibliotheek
De OGC en het projectteam zouden willen dat het resultaat van het updateproject zo snel mogelijk in een voldoende aantal talen wereldwijd beschikbaar wordt gemaakt.
De verklarende woordenlijst vormt hierbij de hoeksteen waarop alle vertalingen zich dienen te baseren.
Wegens het voortdurende streven naar consistentie in de definitie van termen is het onvermijdelijk dat sommige definities toch nog zullen worden gewijzigd.
Het is daarom eerst en vooral belangrijk een herziene verklarende woordenlijst ter beschikking te stellen voor elke taal waarin ITIL tot nog toe werd gepubliceerd.
Op langere termijn zullen alle boeken in overeenstemming worden gebracht met de herziene woordenlijst en de nieuwe Engelse tekst.

ITIL versie 3 krijgt update met verbeterde presentatie
Waarom doen we dit?
In het kader van best management practices werd een controlelogboek beschikbaar gemaakt waarin de ITIL-gemeenschap haar feedback kon geven.
De ITIL-gebruikers hebben daarin talrijke suggesties voor verbetering geformuleerd.
Die slaan bijvoorbeeld op kleine correcties in teksten en diagrammen, meer toelichting en duidelijkere uitleg bij ingewikkelde concepten.
De gebruikers wezen hierbij ook op de behoefte aan consistentie in het gebruik van vaktermen en diagrammen.
Al deze suggesties werden door de CAB aanvaard als waardevolle bijdragen en de OGC wenst deze dan ook op te nemen in een bijgewerkte uitgave van de boeken – nog steeds versie 3, maar met cosmetische en redactionele verbeteringen alsmede een verhoogde rechtlijnigheid.
De manier waarop u gebruik maakt van ITIL wordt hierdoor niet in het minst beïnvloed; wel wordt de communicatie van ITIL-concepten, die zelf ongewijzigd blijven, erdoor verbeterd.
In wat volgt proberen we alvast een antwoord te geven op de vragen die u nog zou kunnen hebben.

V1 Waarom is een nieuwe versie van ITIL nodig?
Versie 3 hield al een grote verandering in en we zitten echt niet uit te kijken naar alweer zo’n drastische ingreep.
A1 Dit is geen nieuwe versie maar een update van v3 om die bruikbaarder te maken.
Er worden geen nieuwe concepten geïntroduceerd.
Het enige wat we nu doen is fouten en inconsistenties verwijderen en de tekst op bepaalde plaatsen begrijpelijker maken.
De ITIL Change Advisory Board heeft tot een update besloten na overweging van zowel alle aanmerkingen die in het controlelogboek (www.best-management-practice.com/ChangeLog) werden gemaakt, als van de feedback van de ruimere ITIL-gemeenschap van praktijkbeoefenaars, trainers en gebruikers.
V2 Dus dit is versie 4?
A2 Nee. Het is een update.
Desgewenst kunt u deze als versie 3.1 zien.
Het is de eerste officiële bijgewerkte versie van v3.
V3 Kunt u mij iets meer vertellen over de draagwijdte van de update?
A3 Centraal staan de verbetering van de consistentie, toegankelijkheid en bruikbaarheid van de belangrijkste publicaties, alsmede de inleiding tot de Service Lifecycle.
We willen ook meer aandacht besteden aan zowel de rollen en verantwoordelijkheden zelf als aan hun omschrijvingen, en proberen de procesbeschrijving te verbeteren en conformiteit met MSP®, M_o_R®, PRINCE2™ en P3O® te verzekeren.
Daarenboven worden de definities die in de verschillende boeken worden gebruikt, gestandaardiseerd en worden deze afgestemd op de verklarende woordenlijst en bijgewerkt waar aangewezen; ten slotte worden ook inhoudelijke en structurele inconsistenties weggewerkt.
Met name in het onderdeel Service Strategy zullen de toelichtingen worden vereenvoudigd en indien nodig toegankelijker gemaakt.
Het ligt geenszins in onze bedoeling nieuwe concepten aan te brengen of op om het even welke wijze de geldigheid van versie 3 te ondergraven noch van implementaties of kwalificaties die erop zijn gebaseerd.
V4 Wanneer zullen de bijgewerkte publicaties beschikbaar worden gemaakt?
A4 Volgens de huidige planning zal dat gebeuren in het voorjaar van 2011.
V5 Welke invloed zal de update hebben op kwalificaties?
Met versie 3 hebben we al een volledige herstructurering meegemaakt.
A5 De wijzigingen aan de ITIL-tekst en -diagrammen zullen ongetwijfeld doorsijpelen in de oefenmaterialen, maar die zullen er alleen vereenvoudigd en verbeterd door worden.
Het is op dit ogenblik niet de bedoeling dat door de update de kwalificatiestructuur noch de reikwijdte van elke kwalificatie wordt gewijzigd.
De certificaten die reeds werden uitgereikt, behouden hun geldigheid omdat de concepten, rollen en processen ongewijzigd blijven; alleen de beschrijvingen ervan worden verbeterd.
V6 Als de aangebrachte wijzigingen zijn gebaseerd op dingen die door om het even wie in het controlelogboek kunnen zijn gezet, en op allerlei aanmerkingen die vanuit het brede publiek zijn gemaakt, hoe kan ik er dan zeker van zijn dat de nieuwe ITIL nog steeds een best practice is van wereldklasse?
A6 Op dat punt kunnen wij u helemaal geruststellen; geen enkele suggestie tot wijziging, van welke bron ook, zal worden opgevolgd zonder dat een team van internationaal erkende ITSM-experts deze eerst volledig heeft doorgelicht.
Daarnaast blijft het natuurlijk ook zo dat de concepten en reikwijdte van ITIL niet worden veranderd, waardoor de invloed van nieuwe of twijfelachtige richtlijnen volledig wordt afgeblokt.
V7 Door wie wordt dit werk uitgevoerd, en hoe wordt het gemanaged?
A7 Om ook nu in een leidraad van de hoogste kwaliteit te kunnen voorzien, zullen de OGC en de TSO een beroep doen op sleutelfiguren met een brede ervaring en expertise in ITIL en IT Service Management.
Voor elk boek zal een auteur worden aangeduid om de updates te schrijven conform de Mandate for Change en de Product Description ontwikkeld op grond van de aanmerkingen in het controlelogboek die door de Change Advisory Board (CAB) in overweging werden genomen.
Elke auteur wordt voorts bijgestaan door een team van drie mentors en een Technical Continuity Editor uit het oorspronkelijke redactieteam van versie 3.
De rol van de mentors bestaat erin de auteurs te begeleiden maar evenzeer in het toezicht op continuïteit en consistentie met zowel de bestaande v3 als alle bijgewerkte publicaties.
De Technical Continuity Editor staat ervoor in dat de diagrammen zowel met de tekst als onderling consistent zijn, en dit over de gehele bibliotheek; ook moet hij of zij toezien op de consistentie van de definities in de tekst en de verklarende woordenlijst.
De uiteindelijke tekstversies zullen worden geëvalueerd door een Review Group die uit gebruikers, trainers en CAB-leden bestaat, en die erover moet waken dat de nieuwe boeken in overeenstemming zijn met de oorspronkelijke Product Descriptions zoals in detail overeengekomen tussen de auteurs, de mentors en de projectraad.
Het dagelijkse management van het project berust bij de TSO dat namens de OGC handelt; de supervisie van het project gebeurt door een projectraad die door de OGC wordt samengesteld.
De Projectraad bestaat uit een project executive van de OGC, een project manager en een team manager van de TSO, en twee project assurance rollen die worden ingevuld door een lid van de OGC en een lid van het APMG Qualifications Team.
De rol van senior user wordt ingevuld door een lid van de itSMFI Board en de twee senior suppliers rollen door leden van de TSO en de APMG.

V8 Ik heb een paar v3-projecten op stapel staan.
Hoe moet ik omgaan met die nieuwe update?
A8 Voor gebruikers van ITIL versie 3 zou de impact op lopende projecten verwaarloosbaar moeten zijn; de inhoud van de leidraad blijft immers onveranderd.
V9 Heeft de ITIL-update invloed op de overeenstemming met internationale normen zoals de ISO/IEC 20000?
A9 Omdat alleen de presentatie, en niet reikwijdte noch inhoud, van ITIL gewijzigd wordt, heeft de update geen invloed op de huidige conformiteit van ITIL met de ISO ITSM normen; deze normen zelf zijn natuurlijk wel voortdurend aan verandering onderhevig.
De ISO-normen worden door de lidstaten gezamenlijk en bij consensus ontwikkeld en worden daarbij geheel terecht als onafhankelijk gezien van referentiekaders voor best practices zoals ITIL.
De OGC noch de TSO kunnen een rechtstreekse invloed uitoefenen op de inhoud of de richting waarin de ISO/IEC 20000 zich ontwikkelt.
Beide organisaties worden evenwel vertegenwoordigd in het BSI-comité dat de Britse bijdrage levert tot de verdere ontwikkeling van de ISO/IEC 20000 en kunnen daar wel degelijk hun ideeën te berde brengen.
Anderzijds bestaat er aan ISO-zijde evengoed het verlangen om uit te leggen hoe ISO/IEC 20000 harmonieus samengaat met de meest vooraanstaande referentiekaders voor best practices.
Als antwoord op een intern onderzoek heeft de ISO onlangs een adhocgroep op SC7-niveau opgezet, aanvankelijk voor de duur van één jaar, om de verhoudingen in kaart te brengen tussen enerzijds ISO/IEC 20000 en anderzijds ITIL en COBIT, en eventueel ook tussen andere normen, methodes en referentiekaders.
De groep wordt voorgezeten door dr. Jenny Dugmore, secretaris van ISO JTC1/SC7 Werkgroep 25 (ITSM) en voorzitter van het BSI ITSM Comité.
De OGC beschouwt dit als een positieve ontwikkeling en zal met de groep samenwerken zoals aangewezen.
V10 Welke invloed zal dit hebben op de bestaande regeling voor goedgekeurde tools?
A10 De verkopers van de tools zouden geen enkele invloed mogen ondervinden omdat de regeling procesgebaseerd is en belangrijke proceswijzigingen buiten het bereik van deze update vallen.
Hoe dan ook zal de impact ervan miniem zijn.
De regeling wordt geadministreerd door APMG, een onderdeel van Best Management Practice dat bestaat uit de OGC, de TSO en de APM-groep.
V11 Vinden andere belangrijke spelers zoals de itSMF de update een goed idee of hadden zij liever een langere periode van stabiliteit gezien?
A11 itSMFI heeft te kennen gegeven...“De update van de bestaande ITIL versie 3 is ITIL in praktijk gebracht.
Een bestaande dienst – de kernpublicaties – krijgt een update wegens serviceverzoeken die werden ingediend door gebruikers en klanten van deze dienst.
Hierdoor wordt evenzeer aangetoond dat best practices evolueren en dat de feedback van de gebruikersgemeenschap over wordt genomen.”
V12 Hoe lang zal het duren voor wij na publicatie in het Verenigd Koninkrijk over de vertaalde versies kunnen beschikken, en welke talen krijgen hierbij voorrang?
A12 Voorrang wordt gegeven aan het Braziliaans, Frans, Duits, Japans en Spaans.
Deze zullen zo snel mogelijk ter beschikking worden gesteld na publicatie van de bijgewerkte versie in het VK.
V13 Hoe lang zal het duren voor wij na publicatie in het Verenigd Koninkrijk kunnen zien welke invloed de wijzigingen hebben op kwalificaties in andere talen, en welke talen krijgen hierbij de voorrang?
A13 Zie ook vragen 5 en 12.
Er bestaat geen enkele intentie tot wijziging van de syllabi of de structuur van de kwalificaties, en aan de examenvragen zullen waarschijnlijk geen of hooguit minieme wijzigingen worden aangebracht.
Wat de kwalificatieregeling betreft, heeft de update hoogstwaarschijnlijk alleen invloed op de oefenmaterialen.
V14 Zullen de wijzigingen aan ITIL iets veranderen aan de manier waarop ik het met andere referentiekaders voor best practices gebruik, zoals COBIT™?
A14 Omdat de reikwijdte, rollen en processen in ITIL niet worden gewijzigd, horen de relaties met procedures die op andere leidraden voor best practices zijn gebaseerd niet te worden beïnvloed.
Hopelijk zorgen de verbeterde toelichtingen in de nieuwe ITIL ervoor dat de interoperabiliteit van ITIL en andere best practices wordt verhelderd en zelfs verhoogd.
V16 U hebt het over “verbeterde toegankelijkheid”, “vereenvoudigde toelichtingen” enz. Is dit codetaal voor wat in feite een “verkleutering” is van ITIL om meer mensen te kunnen bereiken?
A16 Heel wat mensen zullen ermee instemmen dat ITIL een stuk eenvoudiger en makkelijker te begrijpen kon zijn.
Dus, ja, we proberen het zo eenvoudig mogelijk te houden, maar niet eenvoudiger dan dat.
We zullen geen enkel concept laten vallen of wijzigen.
Het doel van deze update is betere toelichtingen te geven en inconsistenties te verwijderen waar deze werden aangetroffen.
De inhoud van ITIL wordt niet gewijzigd; alleen de presentatie van die inhoud zal worden verbeterd.
V17 Hoe kunt u er zeker van zijn dat de nieuwe auteurs de concepten in versie 3 niet zullen veranderen?
Zij hebben waarschijnlijk wel zo hun eigen ideeën.
A17 De nieuwe auteurs werden niet aangetrokken om ze carte blanche te geven en ITIL naar hun hand te laten zetten.
Wel hopen we van hun nieuwe perspectief te profiteren en van hun ideeën over hoe de tekst kan worden verbeterd om te beantwoorden aan de nieuwe productbeschrijvingen.
De zuiverheid behouden van de v3-concepten, d.w.z. de continuïteit van versie 3, is een hoofdverantwoordelijkheid van de mentors, die allen ofwel als auteurs aan v3 hebben gewerkt, of in een sleutelpositie de ontwikkeling ervan hebben gestuurd.
De projectraad zal ten slotte nog de opmerkingen van de Review Group in overweging nemen alvorens in te stemmen met de publicatie, zodat alle mogelijke vragen gehoord zullen zijn en beantwoord.
V18 Momenteel maak ik geen gebruik van ITIL als referentiekader voor mijn ITSM-dienstenaanbod.
Wordt ITIL door deze update aantrekkelijker voor mij?
A18 In ITIL versie 3 worden de beste benaderingen van ITSM beschreven, precies zoals die wereldwijd door topmensen uit de industrie worden onderschreven.
Met ITIL als leidraad zult u in staat zijn goed doordachte, efficiënte, flexibele, betrouw- en beheerbare diensten aan te bieden, waardoor de IT-provider zowel efficiënter als doortastender kan optreden en uw zaak een stuk productiever wordt.
De nieuwe update zal voor uw zaak toegevoegde waarde creëren door de verbetering van zowel de communicatie van ITIL-ideeën en concepten als van de integratie en cohesie van het geheel.
V19 Waarom zou ik in ITIL investeren terwijl we nog volop in een recessie zitten?
A19 ITIL biedt u de mogelijkheid uw IT-diensten efficiënt te plannen en proactief te beheren en, meer nog, te voorspellen wat u als dienstverlener te doen zal staan in een zich onophoudelijk vernieuwende omgeving.
De mate waarin u middels ITIL een efficiënt aanbod van IT-diensten kunt beheren, zal u aanzienlijk helpen bij het maken van financiële analyses en investeringsbeslissingen.
