TECTONIC MOVEMENTS
It should be evident to anyone in business that companies today operate in an environment of enormous and continuous change. Changes on a massive scale, which once occurred rarely, are now everyday parts of the landscape. And it is unlikely that we will ever return to simpler times.
Just take one example: the number of autonomous countries in the world--with their myriad of self-regulated markets and market structures--has increased sharply in the past decade. These new countries and markets--many of which were closed for decades--are not only opening up, they are also producing tough new competition for existing companies almost overnight. The corporation is in the middle of many of these changes and will--at a minimum--have to continually adjust to survive.
There are a number of major forces driving this age of change:
Markets are globalizing, as are the companies that compete in them. In 1993, 43 percent of the sales of the world's 50 biggest companies came from outside the headquarters country. | Translation - Estonian

Igale äris olevale inimesele peaks olema ilmne, et firmad peavad tänapäeval tegutsema tohutute ja pidevate muutuste keskkonnas. Suured muutused, mis varem esinesid harva, on nüüd ärimaastiku igapäevasteks osadeks saanud. Ja on vähetõenäoline, et me eales lihtsamatesse aegadesse naaseme.

Detsembris 1918 jõudis Eesti esimese välisministri Jaan Poska juhitud Eesti delegatsioon Londonisse, et sealt edasi Pariisi rahukonverentsile minna. Erakorraliste olude tõttu oli Poska delegatsioonile antud äärmiselt suured volitused – sellel oli õigus iseseisvalt otsustada kõiki Eestit puudutavaid küsimusi. Sel ajal olid nii Eesti kui ka Läti välispoliitika peamised eesmärgid sõjas eluliselt tähtsa varustuse hankimine, liitlasriikidelt de jure tunnustuse saamine ja suveräänsuse tagamine. Neist viimase jaoks peeti vajalikuks tihedat koostööd teiste äsja Venemaa küljest eraldunud riikidega.
Suhtlemine ja koostöö Eesti, Läti ja teiste Venemaa küljest Esimese maailmasõja käigus eraldunud riikide esindajate vahel Londonis ning Pariisis annab pildi sellest, kuidas noored demokraatlikud maad üritasid end poliitilisel areenil nähtavaks teha ja oma eesmärke saavutada. Eesti, Läti ja teised noored riigid hoidsid memorandumite esitamise ja teiste riikide diplomaatidega suhtlemise teel endil pidevat liitlasriikide tähelepanu. | Translation - English
In December, 1918, the mission lead by the first Estonian Foreign Minister Jaan Poska arrived in London, to travel onward to the Paris Peace Conference. Due to extraordinary circumstances the Poska mission was granted exceptionally extensive powers – it had an authority to singly decide all questions pertinent to Estonia. At that time the main goals of both the Estonian and Latvian foreign policy were the acquisition of supplies vital for the war, the de jure recognition by the Allied States and the guarantee of sovereignty. For the last objective a close cooperation with other states, recently seceded from Russia, was deemed necessary.
The communication and cooperation between the representatives of Estonia, Latvia and other states seceded from Russia during the First World War in London and Paris gives a picture how young democratic countries tried to make themselves seen on the political arena and reach their goals. Estonia, Latvia and the other young states caught the attention of the Entente permanently by submiting memoranda and associating with the diplomats of other countries. |
