America-hating has become a badge of identity, making possible a chest-beating, flag-burning rhetoric of word and deed that makes men feel good. O grande matemático David Hilbert acreditava que toda a Matemática deveria ser desenvolvida axiomaticamente, a exemplo do que conseguira para a Geometria. Uma das suas preocupações centrais era a questão da coerência da Matemática. Em particular, a coerência da sua axiomatização da Geometria era conseguida fornecendo um modelo baseado nos reais. Mas, a coerência da Análise levantou grandes dificuldades pois usava modelos baseados em conjuntos. Recorde-se que a Teoria de Conjuntos na altura enfrentava os problemas levantados pelo paradoxo de Bertrand Russell (ver carta original dirigida a Gottlob Frege em [1]). | Translation - English
The great mathematician David Hilbert believed that all Mathematics should be developed axiomatically, in a manner analogous to what he had achieved for Geometry. One of his main worries was the issue of consistency of Mathematics. In particular, the consistency of his axiomatization of Geometry was achieved by presenting a model based on the reals. However, consistency of Calculus raised serious difficulties, since it relied on models based upon sets. Recall that, at the time, Set Theory faced the problems raised by Bertrand Russell's paradox (see his original letter to Gottlob Frege in [1]). |

I am a Mathematics graduate with a Phd in Computer Science from the University of Nijmegen (Netherlands), having taught at the Department of Informatics of the University of Nijmegen, at the Department of Mathematics at Instituto Superior Técnico (Portugal) and at the Departament of Informatics of the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon. Together with my professional activity, I have formal training as a musician (Gregorian Chant degree, from the Gregorian Institute of Lisbon), and work as a part-time professional musician since 1995.
I speak and write fluently in English (having lived in the USA as a child), Dutch (NT2 diplomma, July 2003) and French. In the past I completed translation and scientific reviewing tasks for Editorial Estampa and Instituto Superior Técnico. |
