Nowadays, we face increasing complexity and uncer- tainty that arise from factors such as the diversification of culture, the individualisation of lifestyle, the globalisation of industrial activities, and growing consideration toward our natural environment. The increasing complexity and uncertainty bring about practical and theoretical dif®culties in every stage of product life cycles.
Some notable examples of these difficulties are non-linear phenomena, incomplete dat and knowledge, combinatorial explosion of states, dynamic changes in environment and the frame problem.
However, it is difficult to approach these problems with only existing principles, such as analysis and determinism. New methodologies based on emergence are considered promising to realise an artifactual system that achieves its purpose in unpredictable conditions, while attacking these problems.
This is the central question for synthesis that
interaction with users. By systematically composing an emergent methodology and verifying its effectiveness in solving the problem of synthesis, the project aimed to contribute to the establishment of science of synthesis and increasing its practical applicability.
The research area has strong correlation with and connections to the fields of arti- artificial life, artificial intelligence, evolutionary and emergent computation, soft computing, complex adaptive systems, reinforcement learning, self-organization, and other ®elds where emergence as a phenomenon plays an important role.
Capturing, sketching, studying and exploiting the emergent phenomena for problem solving in synthesis are the main goal that we set for this research area.
IWES '99 covered a wide range of topics relevant to emergent synthesis, from philosophical studies and theore- tical developments to practical applications.
Topics of inter- est included concepts for emergence toward engineering synthesis, emergent synthesis methods for the designing systems of artifacts, emergent synthesis methods for the manufacturing systems of artifacts, emergent computation for utilizing artifactual systems, synthesis of relational emergence in artifactual environment, modelling and simulation of emergent systems, and applications to technical and economical systems.
Out of 35 papers presented at the workshop, about ten papers were first recommended for this special issue by the International Program Committee of the workshop. Al giorno d’oggi, affrontiamo la complessità e l’incertezza che scaturiscono da fattori come la diversificazione della cultura, la personalizzazione dello stile di vita, la globalizzazione delle attività industriali e la crescente maggiore considerazione verso il nostro ambiente naturale. La crescente complessità e incertezza causano difficoltà pratiche e teoretiche in ogni stadio del ciclo di vita del prodotto.
Qualche esempio notevole di queste difficoltà sono i fenomeni non lineari, conoscenza basata su dati incompleti, esplosione combinatoria degli stati,i cambiamenti dinamici nell’ambiente e i problemi intorno.
Tuttavia e’ difficile affrontare questi argomenti con principi pre esistenti, come l’analisi e il determinismo. Nuove metodologie basate sulla emergenza sono considerate promettenti per realizzare un sistema artifattuale che raggiunge il suo scopo in condizioni imprevedibili, mentre cerca di risolvere questi problemi .
Questo e' il problema centrale che sintetizza questa interazione con gli utilizzatori .
Componendo sistematicamente una metodologia emergente e verificando la sua efficacia nel risolvere i problemi di sintesi, il progetto mira a contribuire al consolidamento della scienza di sintesi e all’accrescimento della sua applicabilità pratica.
L’area di ricerca ha forti correlazioni e connessioni ai campi della vita artificiale , l’intelligenza artificiale, la computazione evoluzionaria emergente, il soft computing, sistemi adattivi complessi, l'apprendimento da rinforzo, l'organizzazione personale, e altri campi dove la nascita come fenomeno ha un ruolo importante.
Immortalare, descrivere, e sfruttare il fenomeno emergente per il problem solving in sintesi e’ l’obbiettivo principale che abbiamo per questa area di ricerca.
IWES ha coperto un ampio spettro di argomenti rilevanti alla sintesi emergente , dagli studi filosofici e gli sviluppi teoretici, fino alle applicazioni pratiche .
Argomenti di interesse includono concetti dell’emergenza verso la sintesi meccanica , metodi emergenti di sintesi sistemi di design di artefatti,metodi di sintesi emergente per i sistemi di costruzione degli artefatti ,computazione emergente per l’utilizzo di sistemi artefattuali ,sintesi di emergenza relazionale in ambiente artifattuale ,elaborazione e simulazione di sistemi emergenti, e applicazioni ai sistemi tecnici e economici .
Su 35 lavori presentati al laboratorio circa 10 lavori sono stati raccomandati per questo argomento specifico dal Committe programmatico del laboratorio.
Ulteriore revisione è stata fatta su sei lavori inclusi nell’argomento specifico.

Vision experts found that cranes, bustards and storks were unable to see obstacles straight ahead when they tilted their heads downwards in flight.
Birds often look down during flight to find fellow birds as well as nesting and feeding areas, say the researchers.
The new evidence suggests that the problem cannot be prevented by altering the appearance of power lines.
Millions of birds are thought to be killed by hitting power lines globally each year.
Clear statistics are difficult to obtain because birds' remains are often scavenged before the cause of death can be recorded.
Despite efforts to make power lines more visible through the use of reflective markers and high-visibility tags, certain species still have high mortality rates from power line crashes.
Scientists from the Centre for Ornithology at the University of Birmingham, UK, studied three particularly affected species: kori bustards (Aerdeotis kori) blue cranes (Anthropoides paradisea) and white storks (Ciconia ciconia).
Their findings, published in the journal Biological Conservation, identify that these species share significant blind areas to the front of their heads.
The blue crane's eyesight is better suited to eating than flying.
Although the heavy bustard differs greatly in general body shape from the delicate crane and stork, the birds share a foraging technique - visually guiding their bill to take food items.
This technique requires excellent vision at the end of the bill, resulting in a narrow field of vision and wide "blind spots".
"Once we saw the wisdom of looking at the problem through birds' eyes rather than human eyes, it all made sense," says Professor Graham Martin.

"These birds can see straight ahead in flight but they only need to pitch their heads forward by a small amount and they will be blind in the direction of travel."
Many species of bird have been observed looking down during flight, possibly to locate fellow birds and suitable foraging and nesting sites.
Narrow binocular fields combined with birds' tendencies to look down effectively means certain species cannot see power lines until it is too late.
"Not all birds will be blind ahead when they look down but we can certainly suggest that this will apply in all crane and bustard species and probably in larger raptors including eagles and vultures," Professor Martin tells the BBC.
This new evidence could help to inform both ornithologists and power distribution companies seeking to avoid crashes.
"Simply putting devices on power lines to make them more conspicuous will not work in many situations... ways need to be found of decoying birds away from power wires at sites where collision rates are high," says Professor Martin.
Of the African birds studied, the blue crane is the most vulnerable according to the IUCN red list.

Secondo gli esperti gli uccelli volano contro i cavi dell'alta tensione perchè avrebbero dei punti ciechi nel loro campo visivo.
Alcuni esperti sulla vista degli animale hanno scoperto che le gru, le otarde e le cicogne non erano in grado di vedere ostacoli di fronte a loro quando ,durante il volo ,guardavano verso il basso.
I ricercatori affermano che,durante il volo, spesso gli uccelli guardano in basso per trovare i loro compagni cosi' come per nidificare o per cercare posti in cui nutrirsi.
Nuove prove dimostrano che il problema non può essere evitato alterando l'aspetto dei cavi dell'alta tensione.
Si stima che ogni anno milioni di uccelli in tutto il mondo muoiano scontrandosi contro i cavi dell'alta tensione .
Non e' facile stilare statistiche incontrovertibili perchè i resti degli uccelli morti spesso vengono spazzati via prima che possa venire accertata la causa della morte.
Nononostante gli sforzi fatti per rendere i cavi dell'alta tensione maggiormente visibili mediante placche catarifrangenti e strisce ad alta visibilità, per alcune specie si registra ancora un alto tasso di mortalità dovuto agli scontri contro i cavi dell'alta tensione .
Gli scienziati del centro di Ornitologia dell'Università di Birmingham nel Regno Unito, hanno studiato le tre specie maggiormente colpite da questo fenomeno: l' Aerdeotis Kori, la gru blu (nome scientifico Anthropoides paradisea) e la cicogna bianca (nome scientifico Ciconia ciconia).
La loro scoperta, pubblicata nella rivista “Biological conservation”, dimostra che queste specie hanno in comune la presenza di punti ciechi davanti alle loro teste.
La vista delle gru blu, inoltre, si adatterebbe meglio alla ricerca del cibo che al volo .
Nonostante, per quanto attiene alla forma generale del loro corpo, le otarde pesanti siano estremamente diverse dalle delicati gru e dalle otarde, questi uccelli condividono tecniche di approvigionamento, ossia la guida visiva con il loro becco per prendere il cibo .
Questa tecnica richiede una vista eccellente all'estremità del becco, che si traduce in un campo visivo piuttosto ristretto e in grandi punti ciechi .
“Una volta che abbiamo avuto l'intuizione di vedere il problema dal punto di vista degli occhi degli uccelli piuttosto che da quelli umani, tutto è diventato chiaro” ha detto il Professor Graham Martin .
Questi uccelli riescono a vedere dii fronte a loro, ma una leggera inclinazione della loro testa in avanti basterebbe a non permettergli più di distinguere dove si stanno dirigendo.
Sono state osservate molte specie di uccelli che guardano giù durante il volo, probabilmente per localizzare i compagni nonchè un approvigionamento ideale e i luoghi per nidificare.
“Non tutti gli uccelli sono ciechi quando guardano verso il basso ma possiamo certmente affermare che ciò avviene per le gru e le otarde e probabilmente anche per i grossi rapaci inlcuse le aquile e gli avvoltoi” ha detto il Professor Martin alla Bbc.
Questa nuova prova potrebbe essere d'aiuto sia agli ornitologi che alle compagnie elettriche che cercano di evitare gli scontri di questi uccelli .
“In molte situazioni un semplice posizionamento dei dispositivi per renderli più visibili non funziona. Bisogna trovare il modo per allontanare gli uccelli dai cavi dell' alta tensione nei luoghi dove il tasso di collisioni e' più elevato” ha detto il Professor Martin.
Secondo la lista di emergenza della IUCN, tra gli uccelli africani studiati, la gru blu è la più esposta al rischio di collisione.
