The Impact of Ownership on Small Firm Behaviour and Performance

The impact of ownership on organizational performance has attracted the interest of a large number of scholars. The theoretical underpinning comes from property rights, stewardship and agency theory. The empirical research predominately focuses on the impact of ownership structures on organizational performance, and to a lesser extent on the relationship between ownership type and performance. The relationship between ownership and other organizational factors has received little attention. In this article we examine the relationship between independent and subsidiary plants/operating units and leadership style, culture, emphasis on dimensions of the strategy making process, barriers to the implementation of strategy and a matrix of performance measures. The article offers new insights by using a different ownership type construct, different domain (small and medium-sized manufacturing plants/operating units in engineering and electronics), and more extensive constructs compared with previous studies. Overall we found that independent firms performed better along some but not all dimensions of performance. In addition, they placed less emphasis on dimensions of the strategy making process, faced more implementation barriers, and were more likely to have a transformational style of management. We found differences along dimensions of culture, but no significant difference in cultural strength.

Determinants of Product Innovation in Small Firms

Many studies have investigated the determinants of product innovation in small firms, suggesting product, firm, market and innovation process factors are its key drivers of success. Variations across industries relating to the determinants of product innovation are often expected, but due to a lack of data this is still under-researched. This article explores if composite effects due to broad samples indeed blur one’s view. Drawing upon a database of 1250 small firms across 7 industries, we investigate if any differences are found in the presence and impact of various firm-level determinants. Controlling for size and age differences, the analysis reveals some major differences to the extent small firms use innovative practices, and their connection with new product introductions.

Impact of Functional Integration and Spatial Proximity on the Post-entry Performance of Knowledge Intensive Business Service Firms

Knowledge intensive business service firms (KIBS) are an important element of modern economies, and are thus attracting increasing interest in scientific research. In the existing literature, it is argued that due to the important role of knowledge, innovation and user-producer interaction in the KIBS sector, functional integration and spatial proximity are particularly decisive for a firm’s development. Nevertheless, due to the absence of suitable micro data there is a lack of studies empirically analysing the impact of functional integration and regional proximity using micro firm data. Based upon new firm micro data from three German metropolitan regions, this article supplements the literature by giving a multivariate empirical analysis of the determinants of post-entry performance of KIBS. The results of the estimates of firm growth equations show that functional linkages to knowledge providers, customers and cooperation partners matter indeed for the performance of young KIBS. Regarding spatial proximity, however, a high diversification of geographical reach is proven to be especially crucial.

Training and Performance in Small Firms

This article explores the relationship between training and growth in small manufacturing businesses. Research on training undertaken at the macro-level highlights a series of earnings and productivity returns. However, firm-level research has generally yielded more ambiguous results. A review of small firms research indicates that the relationship between training and growth has rarely been considered within the wider context of other factors that may influence growth. Training literature also appears to be more concerned, perversely, with its impacts on firm inputs (employment growth) rather than output (sales) growth. Other considerations also complicate understanding of the relationship between training and performance, since training may be provoked by employment growth (but not theoretically by sales growth), and has a tendency to be associated with larger firms. These considerations are examined with respect to two types of training (in-house training and ex-house management training) using information from a sample of 114 small manufacturing firms in Wales.

In der vorhandenen Literatur wird argumentiert, dass durch die wichtige Rolle des Wissens, der Innovation und dem Zusammenspiel von Nutzer und Dienstleister in der Branche der wissensbasierten Dienstleistungsunternehmen funktionale Integration und räumliche Nähe besonders entscheidend für die Entwicklung eines solchen Unternehmens ist. Durch fehlende brauchbare Mikrodaten gibt es jedoch zu wenige Studien, die eine empirische Analyse der Auswirkungen auf funktionale Integration und regionale Nähe unter Verwendung von Mikrodaten aus Unternehmen durchführen. Basierend auf neuen Mikrodaten aus drei deutschen Städteregionen ergänzt dieser Artikel die Literatur durch seine multivariate empirische Analyse der Determinanten auf die Überlebenswahrscheinlichkeit von wissensbasierten Dienstleistungsunternehmen. Die Ergebnisse der Schätzungen von Firmenwachstumsgleichungen zweigen, dass funktionale Verbindungen zu Wissensanbietern, Kunden und Kooperationspartnern für den Erfolg von jungen Dienstleistungsunternehmen tatsächlich von Bedeutung sind.

This is the second time that we have been invited to share Europe Day with you all. We are delighted to be here again. In 2004 our party from Highworth were moved by the level of friendship and warmth with which we were received. Last year we were pleased to be able to host a group from Wassenberg, and we hope and believe, that their visit was a pleasure to them.
Although we are not yet officially twinned with Wassenberg, we look forward to the day, hopefully not too far in the future, when this will happen.
In this last year the EU has been wrestling with a proposed Constitution. When people were asked whether they support this Constitution, the response was not entirely negative, but negative enough to demand a rethinking.
All 25 nations have individual things and ways of life which they wish to protect. They are rarely exactly the same things. How do you satisfy all 25 that pieces of their treasured ways of life will not be compromised? Will we have to give up some of them? If so to what extent, and is it worth it?
I believe that it is important to safeguard the individualities of the various nation states. We should enjoy the differences in ways of life of those nations, because those differences are the spice that
makes the banquet of life delicious rather than bland.
Another problem, I believe, is perhaps one of perception. Few of us identify with those we have elected to the European parliament. We don’t really know what they do. We are left with the feeling that faceless, unelected bureaucrats in Brussels are determining our future for us. Is this perception or reality? This leads to distrust and extreme wariness.
Thankfully it is not my job to answer these questions and solve these problems, but I do realise that there needs to be an effort on everyone’s part to be more understanding of each other. Twinning is a very helpful tool in promoting such understanding, toleration and true friendship. If Europe is to go forward this is vital.
Once again, we would like to thank our hosts, and our friends from Pontorson for allowing us to share these festivities with them.

Wir freuen uns sehr, wieder hier zu sein. 2004 war unsere Delegation aus Highworth sehr bewegt von der Freundschaft und der Wärme, mit der wir empfangen wurden. Im letzten Jahr haben wir eine Gruppe aus Wassenberg bei uns empfangen können, und wir hoffen und glauben, dass ihnen ihr Besuch bei uns Spaß gemacht hat.
Obwohl unsere Städtepartnerschaft mit Wassenberg noch nicht offiziell ist, freuen wir uns schon heute auf den Tag, an dem dies geschehen wird, und hoffen, dass dieser in nicht allzu ferner Zukunft liegt.
Im vergangenen Jahr hat sich die EU um die Einführung einer Verfassung bemüht. Als die Menschen gefragt wurden, ob sie diese Verfassung unterstützen, war die Antwort zwar nicht vollkommen negativ, aber doch negativ genug, um einen neuen Denkansatz zu erfordern.
Alle 25 Nationen haben ihre Eigenheiten und Lebensgewohnheiten, die sie schützen möchten. Diese sind selten gleich. Wie will man alle 25 so zufrieden stellen, dass keiner seine gehegten Lebensgewohnheiten kompromittieren muss? Werden wir einige von ihnen aufgeben müssen? Wenn ja, in wie weit, und ist es das wert?
Ich glaube, dass es wichtig ist, die Eigenheiten der verschiedenen Nationalstaaten zu schützen. Wir sollten uns an den verschiedenen Lebensgewohnheiten all dieser Nationen erfreuen, denn diese Unterschiede sind sozusagen die Würze im Menü des Lebens, das ja sonst eher fahl schmecken würde.
Ein weiteres Problem ist, so glaube ich, das der Wahrnehmung. Nur wenige von uns können sich mit denen identifizieren, die in das Europäische Parlament gewählt wurden. Wir wissen nicht wirklich, was sie tun. Uns bleibt das Gefühl, dass unbekannte, ungewählte Bürokraten in Brüssel unsere Zukunft für uns bestimmen. Ist das nur die Wahrnehmung oder die Realität? Das führt zu Misstrauen und starker Vorsicht.
Gott sei Dank ist es nicht meine Aufgabe, diese Fragen zu beantworten und diese Probleme zu lösen, aber ich erkenne auch, dass jeder seinen Teil dazu beitragen muss, das gegenseitige Verständnis zu verbessern. Städtepartnerschaften sind eine gute Art und Weise, solches Verständnis, Toleranz und wahre Freundschaften zu fördern. Wenn Europa voranschreiten soll, ist das unerlässlich.

3. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG
Im ersten Quartal 2006 wurden insgesamt 50% mehr Produkte verkauft. Als Hauptverkaufsfläche behauptet sich weiterhin das WAP, allerdings ist der Anteil der Web-Verkäufe von rund 10% auf etwa 15% gestiegen. Nur 0,3% aller Produkte werden per SMS Short Codes verkauft.
Im Produktbereich dominieren die Truetones, sie stellen etwa zwei Drittel aller verkauften Produkte. Etwa einen Fünftel stellen die MP3s.
Die erfolgreichsten Tracks und Artists stammen aus dem HipHop/R’n’B-Bereich und sind erfolgreich in den Schweizer Singlecharts vertreten.
Die User sind wesentlich aktiver geworden; sowohl die Zahl der Logins ist gestiegen als auch die Zahl der Neuregistrierungen.
Erstmals konnten bei Gewinnspielen im Web hohe Teilnehmerzahlen erzielt werden. Bei früheren Artistkampagnen lagen diese stets unter 100, bei den Gewinnspielen zu Placebo und Pink hatten wir 420 bzw. 2720 Teilnehmer. Gründe für die rege Teilnahme sehen wir hauptsächlich in der neuen Art der Online-Promotion. Als externe Werbemittel wurden nicht mehr normale Banner verwendet, sondern Floating Ads, die in ihrer Funktion als Werbemittel aggressiver agieren und dadurch mehr Aufmerksamkeit erregen. Entscheidend war auch die Wahl des Themas: Placebo war zwar in den Charts vertreten, allerdings nicht ideal für die Zielgruppe der sunrise musicworld. Pink war sowohl an der Spitze der Charts als auch ein Zielgruppenthema. Diese Kombination führte nicht nur zu hohen Teilnehmer-, sondern auch zu hohen Verkaufszahlen.
Wie schon in der Analyse Oktober bis Dezember 2005 erwähnt, werden für detailliertere Analysen Verlaufsstatisiken benötigt.
Trotz erhöhter Useraktivität im Web empfiehlt es sich, weiterhin über eine Umsetzung von Gewinnspielen im WAP nachzudenken.
Bei der Auswahl späterer Kampagnen sollte darauf geachtet werden, dass die Künstler nicht nur chart- sondern auch zielgruppenrelevant sind.

3. SUMMARY
In the first quarter of 2006, 50 % more products were sold in total. The main sales platform continues to be WAP, but the portion of web sales has increased from 10% to 15%. Only 0.3 % of all products are sold via text message short codes.
The product range is dominated by truetones, they make up about two thirds of all products sold. About one fifth of all sales are MP3s.
The most successful albums come from the domain of HipHop/R’n’B and are successful in the Swiss single charts. The users have become significantly more active; both the number of log ins and the number of new registrations has increased.
For the first time we achieved a high number of participants for competitions on the world wide web. During previous artist campaigns these were below 100, for the competitions for Placebo and Pink we had 420 and 2720 participants respectively. The reasons for the lively participation are mainly the new ways they are promoted online. For external promotion we no longer used simple banners but floating ads, that act much more aggressive in their function as promotion tool and therefore receive more attention. Crucial was also the choice of artists: Though Placebo was in the charts, they are not ideal for the target audience of the sunrise musicworld. Pink was both topping the charts and was in the focus of interest of the target audience. This combination not just resulted in a high number of participants but also high sales figures.
As already mentioned in the analysis covering October to December 2005, we need sales statistics for detailed analysis.
Even with the increased user activity on the web it is recommended to think about a continued offer of competitions via WAP.
When choosing artists for future campaigns, it should be taken into consideration that the artists are not just in the charts but are also popular among our target audience.

Sleek design and navigation
Built in Flash 8, the site uses 3D floating animation, glow effects on all buttons and text, and transitions that the average user would expect to see in the opening credits of the movie itself.
Motion enhanced rollovers coupled with video alpha channel of the best quality bring each of mutant to life in the Mutant Files. High quality and fast-loading video clips have been seamlessly integrated with the interactive navigation throughout the site, optimising the speed of use and interactivity.
The X-Browser. The site itself looks like a web browser that the X-Men, with their superior technology, would themselves use. Users can access confidential mutant files, the X-Search feature, clips and downloads the way the X-Men would. The X-Browser is a true extension of the film and makes using The Last Stand website a different experience.
The X-Search : a fully working search engine
This in-depth feature can cross-reference thousands of words against a wealth of mutant material. Users typing in a single word will get mutant-related results straight from the world of the X-Men.
With human/mutant tensions reaching an all-time high in the new film, the X-Search generates information about how the searched term can be used to help better integrate human and mutant societies. This reflects the code of tolerance and understanding by which the X-Men live.
The X-Search, like the rest of the site, works in multiple languages and intrepid word searchers may also discover special hidden content.
Finally, using the X-Browser, users can download screen-savers and MSN icons for each mutant, view new material (including video footage of the forthcoming film as it becomes available) and request regular X-Men updates.

Vinnie Jones plays the unstoppable strongman Juggernaut, and Ellen Page portrays Kitty Pride, also known as Shadowcat, a young woman possessing the ability to pass through solid matter by “phasing.” Ben Foster plays Warren Worthington III, or Angel, whose bird-like wings endow him with the gift of flight. Michael Murphy is Warren Worthington, Sr., Angel’s father, whose distress over his son’s mutant powers leads him to spearhead the “cure.”
Also joining the cast are Dania Ramirez as Callisto, whose highly attuned senses allow her to locate and assess the power of other mutants; Eric Dane as Multiple Man, who can create exact physical replicas of himself; Cameron Bright as the power dampener Leech; Olivia Williams as Dr. Moira McTaggert, one of the world’s leading authorities on genetic mutation and Xavier’s longtime colleague and confidante; and Shohreh Aghdashloo as geneticist Dr.Kavita Rao.

Welfare to Work
A4e is the largest provider of New Deal services in the United Kingdom, working on behalf of Jobcentre Plus, the UK government department responsible for employment and welfare.
An introduction to New Deal
People in the UK that claim unemployment benefits do so through Jobcentre Plus. New Deal is a mandatory programme attended by people who have been claiming benefits for six months. It is a combination of learning, training and work experience packages that moves benefit claimants back into work, reduces unemployment and improves the lifestyles of disadvantaged people.
The New Deal segments benefit claimants by age, with three categories: 18-24 year olds, over 25s and over 50s. Other categories include excluded groups such as New Deal for Lone Parents and New Deal for Disabled People. Segmenting the client group enables people in similar situations and facing similar problems to work alongside one another throughout their time on New Deal.
There is no average time spend on the New Deal Programme, as leaving is dependent on securing employment, although training packages that make up New Deal typically last between 2 and 39 weeks.

Herzlich Willkommen bei A4e.
Ich habe A4e 1986 gegründet, um den Menschen, die durch den Zusammenbruch der Stahlindustrie im englischen Sheffield arbeitslos wurden, Weiterbildungsmöglichkeiten zu bieten. Ich wollte Teil eines Unternehmens sein, das das Leben der Menschen positiv verändert, und aus diesem einfachen Wunsch heraus haben wir ein Unternehmen gegründet, das nun Tausenden von Menschen auf der ganzen Welt hilft.
Unser starkes Engagement und unsere Tatkraft zur Verbesserung der Lebensumstände in den letzten zwei Jahrzehnten in allem was wir tun, hat A4e zu der erfolgreichen internationalen Organisation gemacht, die sie heute ist. Wir sind stolz darauf, dass wir Menschen und Organisationen Zugang zu hochqualitativem Training, zu Arbeitsplätzen und Beratung geben können, und alles dafür tun, um soziale Veränderung und voranzutreiben und neue Möglichkeiten zu bieten. Wir tun die Dinge auf die richtige Art, nicht auf die einfache Art. Was wir machen, ist gut. Wie wir’s machen, auch.
Ich bin stolz darauf, dass A4e nun den Menschen in Gelsenkirchen zu positiver Veränderung verhelfen kann und verspreche, dass wir hart daran arbeiten werden, Beschäftigungsmöglichkeiten für die Menschen in ganz Deutschland zu schaffen.

„Welfare to Work”
A4e ist Großbritanniens größte Provider von „New Deal” Programmen im Auftrag von Jobcentre Plus, Dienstelle der britischen Regierung zuständig für Arbeit und Soziales.
Eine Einführung in den „New Deal”
In Großbritannien beziehen Arbeitslose ihr Arbeitslosengeld durch Jobcentre Plus. Der „New Deal“ ist ein Pflichtprogramm, das jeder absolvieren muss, der seit 6 Monaten Arbeitslosengeld bezieht. Es ist eine Kombination aus Lernen, Weiterbildung und Arbeitserfahrung, die den Beziehern von Sozialleistungen hilft, in die Arbeitswelt zurückzukehren; es reduziert die Arbeitslosigkeit und verbessert die Lebensweise von benachteiligten Menschen.
Der „New Deal“ ordnet die Bezieher von Sozialleistungen in drei Alterskategorien; 18-24 Jahre, über 25; und über 50. Andere Kategorien sind beispielsweise ausgeschlossene Gruppen wie Alleinerziehende und Menschen mit Behinderung. Die Aufteilung der Kunden in Gruppen ermöglicht Menschen in ähnlichen Situationen und mit ähnlichen Problemen während ihrer Teilnahme am „New Deal“-Programm miteinander zu arbeiten.
Es gibt keine durchschnittliche Zeitspanne, die die Menschen im „New Deal“-Programm verbringen, da das Verlassen des Programms vom Erhalt eines festen Arbeitsplatzes abhängt. Die Trainingsprogramme, die den „New Deal“ ausmachen, laufen jedoch zwischen 2 und 39 Wochen.

Wir bieten Dienstleistungen im gesamten britischen Raum für Menschen in sozial benachteiligten Innenstadtregionen und für Menschen in abgelegenen ländlichen Regionen.
Unsere Stärke liegt darin, eine erfolgreiche Sozialreform zu fördern, die den Menschen, Gemeinden, Arbeitgebern und der Gesellschaft als Ganzes hilft. Wir bringen Energie, Dynamik und Leidenschaft in die Arbeit, die wir machen und erzielen Ergebnisse – wir entwickeln innerhalb des sozialen Systems eine Kultur, in der die Arbeit wieder im Mittelpunkt steht, um so die öffentlichen Ausgaben zu reduzieren.
Unser Geschick liegt in der Arbeit mit Kunden, denen wir helfen, die Barrieren und Probleme, die sie vom Eintritt in die Arbeitswelt abhalten, abzubauen. Bei einigen dauert das nur einige Wochen – für einige weniger Glückliche kann dies auch Monate dauern.
Unsere Vorgehensweise spiegelt sich in drei einfachen Fragen wider:
Was würden Sie gerne arbeiten?
Was hält Sie davon ab?
Was können wir beide tun, um Sie dorthin zu bringen, wo Sie gerne wären?
Diese Herangehensweise nimmt sich die Person „als Ganzes“ vor – durch das Abbauen der erkennbaren Barrieren gegenüber der Arbeit und das Aufzeigen ihrer Träume, Ziele und Sehnsüchte. Das ist der Weg, der unser „Welfare to Work“-Methode definiert.
Diese Strategie ermöglicht es den Kunden, neues Vertrauen und neue Qualifikationen aufzubauen und am Ende ihr gesamtes Potenzial zu verwirklichen.
