“A conservação da biodiversidade passa por questões profundas de justiça social e da melhoria da qualidade de vida das populações mais carentes”. A frase é do biólogo e primatologista José Márcio Ayres que, ao desembarcar na região do médio Solimões no início da década de 1980, encontraria o que se tornaria o seu maior objetivo: criar e gerir unidades de conservação em áreas ecologicamente importantes para promover a conservação da biodiversidade brasileira, integrando nesse processo a população que as habita.
Aproximadamente dezenove anos depois, nascia o Instituto de Desenvolvimento Sustentável Mamirauá (IDSM), formado para acompanhar a implantação da Reserva de Desenvolvimento Sustentável Mamirauá (RDSM). Reserva de Desenvolvimento Sustentável é uma nova categoria de unidade de conservação e incorporada ao Sistema Nacional de Unidades de Conservação (SNUC) em 2000. Seu objetivo básico é conciliar a preservação da natureza à melhoria da qualidade de vida dos seus habitantes.

“The conservation of biodiversity goes through deep issues of social justice and life quality improvement for the less favored population”. The quote belongs to the biologist and primatologist José Márcio Ayres who, when disembarking in the middle Solimoes region, in the early 1980s, found what would become his biggest goal: to create and manage conservation units in ecologically important areas in order to promote the protection of brazilian biodiversity, integrating the inhabiting population to this process.
About nineteen years later the Mamirauá Sustainable Development Institute (IDSM) was created, organized to follow up the implementation of the Mamirauá Sustainable Development Reservation (RDSM). The Sustainable Development Reservation is a new category or conservation unit added to the National System of Conservation Units (SNUC) in 2000. Its main objective is to ally nature preservation to the population’s life quality improvement.
