まず、水中で使うカメラでは気密性が最大のテ－マになる。少しでも水が入れば映像管が割れたり、基板が破壊されて使いものにならなくなる。いちいち海で試験をすることはできないので、テスト機器を作ることから始め、容器の材質、接合部の気密性など、一歩ずつ解決していくしかなかった。また、光量の少ない水中では絶対に欠かせない水中を照らすライトの開発も同時に進行した。
試行錯誤を繰り返しながら約２年をかけてようやくそのカメラは完成。日本で初めて水中専門のテレビカメラが商品化された。
「誰が買うかも、どこに市場があるかも未知でしたが。とにかくオリジナルの製品が自分たちの手でできたことが嬉しかったですね。最初に買っていただいたのは、岸壁などで潜水作業を行う小さな会社でした」

First, it was important that we make a camera which was hermetically sealed. If just a little water entered the camera the picture tube would be ruined and the circuit board would be destroyed. We couldn’t test the camera in the ocean all the time, so we started by making an underwater testing device, selecting the material for the submersible’s body and testing the hermetic seams. We just solved each problem one at a time. At the same time, there was progress in the development of a light that could be used to illuminate the darkness underwater.
After two years of trial and error we finally perfected a camera that could function underwater. It was the first underwater TV camera to be commercialized in Japan.

海外建設協会によると、２００８年度の日本企業による海外建設受注は、過去最高だった前年から４０％減の１兆３４６億円。ピーク時から半減した中東の落ち込みが目立った。建設業界紙「ＭＥＥＤ」の調査によると、２００９年１月時点で、建設中止や延期になったドバイのプロジェクトは日本円換算で２兆８０００億円にも上がった。
当然、ゼネコン各社の業績に影響がないはずはない。主要２７社の２００８年度の決算で、１２社が最終赤字、６社が最終減益となった原因のーつは、過去に受注した海外の赤字工事にあった。最益期の２００６年度に受注した手持ち工事の多くが竣工し、損失認職の時期を迎えたからだ。とりわけ積極的だった***は、２４４億円の新株引受権付き社債の発行を余儀なくされたほどだ。
つめ跡がくっきりと残る直近の決算だが、当のゼネコン関係者らも、海外工事の損失処理はこれからが本番と見ているから恐ろしい。

According to the Overseas Construction Association of Japan, between April, 2007 and March, 2008 overseas construction orders declined by 40% to a record low of 1,346 trillion yen compared to the previous year. What is significant is that construction in the Middle-East has dropped by half from its peek last year. In a survey conducted by Middle East Business Intelligence (MEED) in January, the value of halted or suspended construction projects in Dubai amounted to 2.8 trillion yen.
There’s no doubt that the profits of Japanese contractors will be affected. Among Japan’s 27 leading contractors in the fiscal period between April 2007 and March 2008, 12 firms were in the red and the profits of 6 firms fell. One factor for the decline in profits is that many of the construction projects undertaken in 2006 were completed at a loss. Those losses are now showing up on current financial statements. In particular, *** had little choice but to issue a new 24.4 billion bond with warrant.
Those losses will have a direct impact on the bottom line of Japanese contractors. For those people working at the affected firms, the prospect of actually having to write off the losses of overseas projects is terrifying. |
