This year’s LATINA Style magazine’s Business Series was held in Chicago and attracted both established businesswomen and budding entrepreneurs.
The event, held June 17, featured talks on securing startup capital, developing marketing strategies and maximizing technology. California-based author and public speaker Maria Marin gave the keynote address on successful negotiating skills.
Panelists also discussed how women can establish businesses in male-dominated arenas such as construction.
“People, this is still a man’s world. It’s not easy and it takes a lot of work,” said Aurora Venegas, president of Azteca Supply Company of Chicago, a supplier of chemical, building and concrete products.
The Small Business Administration offers startup loans ranging from a few thousand dollars up to $1 million for an individual business, said Illinois District Office Director Judith Roussel.
Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley gave the event’s welcoming remarks, saying that Latina business owners are role models for entrepreneurship.
“It doesn’t matter where you’re from. You still can learn how to create a business,” Daley said.
