Die Fernwartung (Remote Control) von Computern gewinnt beim Support von Hard- und Software zunehmend an Bedeutung. Durch die immer stärkere Vernetzung der Computer über das Internet, den Aufbau von firmeninternen Intranets und herkömmliche Telekommunikationswege (ISDN, Telefon) erweitern sich die Möglichkeiten der direkten Unterstützung im Support. Nicht zuletzt wegen der Einsparmöglichkeiten bei Reisekosten und die bessere Ressourcennutzung (Personal und Technik) werden Produkte der Fernwartung zur Kostensenkung in Unternehmen genutzt.
Fernwartungsprogramme ermöglichen es dem entfernt sitzenden Servicetechniker, direkt auf den zu wartenden Rechnern Aktionen durchzuführen. Tastaturanschläge und Mausbewegungen werden übertragen. Der Servicetechniker sieht die Bildschirmausgabe auf dem eigenen Bildschirm.
Auf dem Markt gibt es mittlerweile ca. 200 Produkte mit unterschiedlichen technologischen Ansätzen und Leistungsparametern.
Wurden in der Vergangenheit Telefonverbindungen (analog oder ISDN) oder direkte Verbindungen über das hauseigene Netzwerk zum Einsatz gebracht, verdrängen mittlerweile webgestützte Fernwartungsprogramme die klassischen Programme.
Die Vorteile sind offenkundig:
--schnellerer Zugang über DSL
--Unabhängigkeit vom Standort der Kunden
--Unabhängigkeit vom Standort des Kundenbetreuuers (bei einigen Produkten)
--Keine vorherige Softwareinstallation (bei einigen Produkten)
== Sicherheit ==
Sicherheitsbedenken spielen bei der Entscheidung zum Einsatz von Fernwartungssoftware immer eine Rolle. Neben den rein technischen Parametern, sollten organisatorische Regelungen bei dem Einsatz von Fernwartungssoftware in die Überlegungen einbezogen werden. Fernwartung heißt nicht zuletzt, dass ein Vertrauensverhältnis zwischen Sender und Empfänger bestehen muss. Sinvoll sind vertragliche Vereinbarungen, die die Fernwartung regeln.
Der Datenschutz muss in jedem Fall berücksichtigt werden. Computerkriminalität und der fahrlässige Umgang mit Daten können große Schäden verursachen. Fernwartung und Sicherheit müssen sich aber nicht widersprechen. Eindeutige Identifizierungsverfahren, sichere [[Firewall]]-Einstellungen und hohe Verschlüsselungen (256 Bit) können einen hohen Sicherheitsstandard gewährleisten.

Remote Control of computers is becoming increasingly important in the support of hardware and software. The ever-growing interconnection of computers through the internet, through both internal company intranets and tradition telecommunication methods (ISDN, telephone), expands the opportunities for direct service by support personnel. Not to mention that, because of the savings in transportation costs and better resource usage (personnel and equipment), companies can use remote control software to significantly cut costs.
Remote control software allows service technicians to directly carry out corrective action from a remote location. Key presses and mouse movement are transmitted to the remote system. The service technician sees the screen output on his own screen.
There are around 200 products with different underlying technology and features.
In the past, the applications made use of telephone connections (via modem or ISDN) or direct connections over an internal network, however web-based programs are now replacing the more traditional applications.
The advantages are obvious:
--faster access over DSL
--Not dependant on the customer's location
--Not dependant on the location of customer service personnel (with some products)
--No pre-installed software (with some products)
== Security ==
Security concerns always play a role in the selection of remote control software. Besides the solely technical features, organizations should consider putting regulations in place regarding the use of remote control software. Remote control requires first of all that a mutual trust exist between the sender and receiver. It is sensible to set forth a contractual agreement as to the use of remote control access.
Data security must always be taken into account. Computer crime and carelessness with data access can cause enormous damage. Remote control and security are not, however, mutually exclusive. Positive identification procedures, secure Firewall settings, and high encryption (256 Bit) can guarantee high security.
