I studied Japanese at the School of Oriental and African Studies, London University for four years, with a year's sabbatical in Japan in between my second and third year at SOAS.
I graduated in 1987 and moved to Nagoya, Japan, where I lived for the next 8 years. During this time I worked mostly as a translator, interpreter and narrator. I did a lot of work for the Chunichi Shimbun, a big newspaper group that sponsored a major art exhibition in which I was involved. I also did a lot of translation work for Fumio Nanjo, a well-known art critic and now museum director and Maurice Tuchman, then Curator of the Los Angeles Museum of Modern Art. For the Chubu Broadcasting Company I provided a translation and narration service, translating and then narrating the script of promotion videos for regions and towns around Nagoya.
Upon my return to the UK in 1995 I worked as a freelance translator and interpreter for 6 months before joining Canon Research Centre Europe as in-house translator and interpreter. The company was having communication problems with the mother ship in Japan and it was my job to help improve ties with Japan. Over the next 8 years my role expanded to include marketing and communications and PR. The lab specialised in 3D and speech recognition software, and my expanded role included meeting with Business Group Managers in Japan and anlysing what areas of common ground existed, and how we could help bolster Canon's product offerings, mainly through advanced interface systems. I built up a good understanding of software structures, mobile handsets and web-related technologies in particular. I designed and managed the CRE Japanese and English language websites and also designed a Lotus Notes-based CRM application that was implemented by our IT guru. Sadly, Canon closed down the lab in 2002.
After Canon I joined Mitsubishi Securities International as an in-house translator and interpreter and worked with some of Japan's top financial analysts in meetings and telephone conferences, mostly with European investors and fund managers. Through this process I gained an in-depth understanding of accounting and financial terms. I also became registered with the UK Financial Services Authority as a Financial Advisor (CF31). I left Mitsubishi in Oct 2008, since when I have been working as a freelance interpreter and translator specialising in finance-related work. I also managed a major telecoms project for BT in 2009, translating user manuals into Japanese.
