I have just completed a M. Phil. in Literary Translation in Trinity College Dublin. Prior to this, I completed a 4-year Honours Degree in Applied Languages and Translation Studies in Dublin City University and am now working as a freelance translator. My final grade was 2:1 (Second Class Honours, Grade One).
I spent the third year of my degree on Erasmus in Salamanca, Spain and was employed there by the Computer Science Faculty of the University of Salamanca. The work consisted of translating papers and presentations for the BISITE research group. The content was mainly related to Artificial Intelligence, Multi-Agent Systems, Cloud Computing, Case-Based Reasoning Systems etc.
During the academic year I took a year-long practical module which involved translating documents for various NGOs working with Rwanda and The Democratic Republic of Congo.
When I returned to Dublin, I was again employed by the University of Salamanca. This work involved translating webpages dealing with the history of the University, application procedures, information on research groups etc.
For my postgraduate dissertation, I completed an annotated translation of a series of short stories from the collection "Buicéad Poitín agus Scéalta Eile" by Irish author Pádraic Breathnach from Irish to English.
For my undergraduate dissertation, I subtitled a short film about domestic violence from Costa Rica which involved the translation of a poem as well as intertitles and on-screen text . I also wrote 10,000 words on the subtitling process, applying the work of various translation theorists, including Venuti and Nord.
Although I have just finished my studies, I am experienced and very eager to work. |
