Several devices are available for monitoring the effectivness of oxsygen and ventilation.The two devices most commonly used in prehospital care are pulse oximeters and carbon dioxide monitors.
Puls oximetry is now widely used in emergency care.It is a device that measures oxygen saturation in peripheral tissues.It is not invasive ,rapidly applied,and easy to operate .
Puls oximetry readings are accurate and reflect,on continuing basis ,any changes in peripheral oxygen delivery.In fact,oximetry often detects problems with oxygenation before blood pressure,pulse,and respirations would detect a problem.
Peripheral oxygen saturation is obtained by placing a sensor probe on a peripheral capillary such as fingertip,toe,or ear lobe.In infants,the sensor can be wrapped around the heel and secured with tape.
The sensor contains two light-emitting diods and two sensors.The wavelenght of light emitted from one diode is specific for oxygenated hemoglobin(near red),while the other is specific for deoxygenated hemoglobin(infared).Eache heomglobin state absorbs a certain amount of emitted light,preventing it from reaching the corresponding sensor.
The less light to rach the sensor ,the greater the quantity of the specific type of hemoglobin present.The oximetar then compares the difference between these absorbed colors and calculates a ratio called the oxygen saturation percentage(spO2).

Nekoliko uredaja su dostupni radi pracenja efektivnosti oksigena i ventilacije.
Dva najcesce koristena u pred bolnickoj njezi su puls oksimetar i karbon dioksid monitori.
Puls oksimetar se siroko koristi u urgentnoj pomoci.To je uredaj koji mjeri saturaciju oksigena u perifernom tkivu.Ne zauzima prostor,cesto koristen ,i lak za rukovanje.
U dugotrajnoj primjeni ocitavanja su tacna te reflektuju bilo kakve promjene periferalnog dotoka oksigena.U stvari oksimetar ukazuje na probleme sa oksigenom prije nego nam krvni pritisak,puls i disanje ukazu na problem.
Periferalna saturacija oksigena se dobija postavljajuci senzor diodu na periferalni kapilar kao sto su vrh prsta,nozni prst ili usna skoljka.Kod djece senzor se omotava oko pete i osigurava trakom.
Senzor se sastoji od dvije diode i dva senzora.Valna duzina emitirajuceg svjetla od jedne diode je specificna za oksigenizirani hemoglobin(blizu crvene),dok je druga specificna za deoksigenizirani hemoglobin(infra crvena).Stanje hemoglobina absorbuje odredenu kolicinu emitiranog svijetla,sprecavajuci kontakt sa korespondirajucim senzorom.Sto manji kontakt sa svijetlom dovodi do vece kolicine pristutnosti odredenog tipa hemoglobina.Oksimetar tada uporeduje razlike izmedu absorbiranih boja te racuna omjer nazvan procenat saturacije oksigena(spO2).
