The Astrikas Estate olive groves are located in the small village of Astrikas, within the PDO (Protected Denomination of Origin) area of Kolymbari in northwestern Crete. They were acquired by the Dimitriadis family in the mid-18th century and are farmed today by 5th generation descendants. George Dimitriadis founded Biolea in 1997; the company specializes in artisan production of organic, stone milled and cold pressed extra virgin olive oil. Biolea’s olive oil is exclusively estate-produced and bottled.
Biolea is based on principles of self-reliance, innovation an environmental consciousness. It operates from a solid scientific base, applying the soundness of the traditional ways of farming and extracting olive oil to modern standards thereby improving olive oil quality, preserving and promoting tradition and supporting sustainable agriculture on the island Crete.
Biolea’s objective is to offer to the health conscious person who appreciates and understands “gourmet” foods and who has a keen sense of value, an olive oil from a specific “terroir” untainted in its quality and taste, and which reflects the uniqueness of the organoleptic properties of our soil, local microclimate and the traditional olive oil production method.
Tasting notes: "Intensely herbaceous aromas with grassy apples and lettuce leaves followed through to a complex flavour of mixed salad greens. This is followed by light bitterness and a good burst of pepper. Herby sorrel tones return on the long aftertaste."
