Skinless flesh or fleshless skin, such a fruit would strike us as lacking some part. How about art, then? And how about life? The philosophers of the past, including Plato, have held the flesh of art of utmost importance. Their view meant that art should teach the truth and the good ways. Works of art that were merely pleasant to look at were to be denounced and oppressed, since they were like fleshless skin, wrapped around a hollow core. The philosopher Kant overthrew such an history of Philosophy. In fact, Kant had been a strict person himself who postulated that good deeds done out of personal pleasure could not be inherently moralistic. Only the deeds that are done out of respectful adherence to the laws of morality, and thus responsibility, could ever be truly moralistic in his eyes. Seeing that Kant was that particular concerning morals, it is all the more surprising then that he should have freed art from oppression and burden, of all people. No matter what art meant to express, he stated, all was good as long as it was beautiful (or attractive). "Beauty is not the expression of the beautiful object, but the beautiful expression of the object!" Although art might as well express truth, the expression of truth never could serve as the measuring stick for the evaluation of art or the nature of art. The nature of art was to lie within the beautiful expression, and hence, the skin.
The Musical "The Covenant Journey" which has been performed in the Seoul Arts Centre's Towol Theatre from 26th September to 5th October, supplies us with an artistic logic to escape a despairing reality, even where there is no glimmer of hope left. That same logic even enables prisoners to realize their own precious self-worth. It is, alas, to believe that there is a God who is with us wherever we go. Defying its origins as a purely Korean-made musical, the backdrop of the story is an Elite Private School in the US east coast, which feels refreshing. Via this setting, various realities of different lives are unfolded, such as a child brought up by homosexual parents, or one of a mixed-ethnic marriage. Karyn's story is that she dreams of forming a rock band, but instead becomes entangled in a drug crime and lands in prison for it. This storyline is gradually intertwined with that of Joseph, who is sold off as a slave by his ragingly jealous brothers, and the two main protagonists unfold to be the metaphors of each other. Truth be told, the story of Joseph might in fact be an illustration within the musical, but is more than apt to dominate the original story, with thanks to the stage design, costumes, and the sheer mysterious quality of the tale. As a consequence, the viewer is enchanted by a religious atmosphere without realizing it. As a rule, whenever religiousness permeates in an artwork, it must duly align itself with accepted human norms in order to break the shackles of a missions objective for one religion in particular. Only then can it gain the empathy of all, having surpassed religious categories. Luckily for this musical, the protagonist's escape from despair forms a synergy for the viewer, so that a moon of the name of hope may rise for him or her also. A turn of events to the positive is pursued, and therefore, a decidedly joyous step is taken, into the area of human common sense.
The actors' dance and song, the shining stars of the night sky, and the gold-gilded palace are beyond beautiful. If a musical gives the solution to life and is splendid to watch at the same time- that might just be the skin and flesh combined, a satisfying fruit altogether. Considering that it even comes with the flesh, which Kant once declared to be not categorically necessary- even Kant himself might shower it with compliments.
What is the skin of life and what is the flesh? Is the flesh thus survival and life, and does skin not equal art? The flesh of life must be enveloped by beautiful art, in order for us to live a more noble and rich life. Alas, flesh and skin are relative as well. For somebody, art might be the flesh of life.

Fruchtfleisch ohne Schale, oder Schale ohne Fruchtfleisch? Eine solche Frucht wird zwingend so aussehen, als fehlte ihr etwas. Wie ist es mit der Kunst, oder mit dem Leben? Die Philosophen der Vergangenheit, einschliesslich Plato, legten ihr Gewicht auf das Fruchtfleisch der Kunst. Ihre Ansicht demzufolge war, dass die Kunst das Wahre und das Gute zu vermitteln hatte. Ein bloss schön anzusehendes Kunstwerk konnte nicht mehr sein als eine Schale ohne Fruchtfleisch, und der betreffende Kuenstler war unterdrückt zu werden. Der Philosoph Kant jedoch überwarf diese Geschichte der Philosophie. Es war die Ansicht Kants- selbst eine strenge Persönlichkeit- dass eine aus Selbstmotivation erfolgte Gute Tat keine wirkliche Tugend tragen könne, und dass stattdessen nur die aus Moralstreue und Pflichtgefühl ausgefuehrten Taten moralisch seien. Es kommt als komplette Überraschung, dass gerade solch ein strenger Moralist die Kunst aus ihrer Unterdrückung und Zwängen befreiten sollte. Kant vertrat die Meinung, dass Kunst bloss schön (attraktiv) zu sein hatte, unabhängig von dem was es auszudrücken suchte. "Nicht Ausdruck eines Schönobjekts, sondern schöner Ausdruck des Objekts!". Kunst darf zwar die Wahrheit ausdrücken, doch der Wahrheitsausdruck darf nicht Messlatte sein fuer die Kritik an der Natur der Kunst oder der Kunst an sich. Folglich liege die Natur der Kunst in dem schönen Ausdruck, also in der Schale.
Das Musical "The Covenant Journey" wurde aufgeführt vom 26.9. bis zum 5.10. im Towol-Theater des Seoul Arts Center. Es lockt uns mit einer künstlerische Logik, die uns den Ausbruch aus einer verzweifelten Realität ermöglicht, auch wenn keine einzige Hoffnung übrig zu sein scheint. Jedermann, und sogar Inhanftierte im Gefägnis, kommt dadurch zur Erkenntnis ihrer eigenen wertvollen Existenz. Es ist der Glaube an die Präsenz Gottes, welcher mit uns ist egal wohin wir gehen. Obgleich ein rein in Korea produziertes Musical, ist es erfrischend zu sehen, dass sich das Stück an einer Elite-High School der Ostküste Amerikas abspielt. Sie stellt die Kulisse für diverse Lebensrealitäten, wie z.B. einem Kind welches unter einem homosexuellen Ehepaar aufwächst, oder auch aus einer ethnischen Mischehe stammt. Zwei Handlungsstränge ueberlappen in dem Stück: Vorerst die Geschichte Karyns, die eine Rockband formieren will, aber in einen Mord-und Dorgendelikt verwickelt wird und ins Gefängnis kommt; Bald gesellt sich zur Handlung Josef aus der Bibel, der von seinen eifersuchtsblinden Bruedern als Sklave wegverkauft wird. So werden beide Protagonisten zu einer gegenseitigen Metapher. Die Wahrheit ist, dass die Geschichte Josephs zwar eine illustrative Rolle im Stück einnimmt, sie jedoch die ursprüngliche Handlung einzunehmen vermag dank dem Bühnen-und Kostümdesign und ihrer mysteriösen Qualitäten. Als Folge vertieft sich der Zuschauer in eine Art religiöse Andacht, ohne es zu merken. Eine im Stück enthaltene Religiösitaet kann nur dann von allen Empathie erlangen, wenn sie mit dem konventionellen Anspruch kooperiert und somit aus der Missionierung einer spezifischen Religion entflieht, um alle Religionsarten zu transzendieren. Glücklicherweise schafft es dieses Musical, dass die Hauptfigur, gleichzeitig mit ihrer Flucht aus der Verzweiflung, auch dem Zuschauer einen Mond Namens Hoffnung in seinem Leben aufgehen lässt. Auch wird eine Wendung gen dem Positiven angestrebt, sodass es einen entschiedenen Schritt in die gemeinsame Verträglichkeitszone verkörpert.
Gesang und Tanz der Darsteller, sowie das Sternenleuchten des Nachthimmels und der goldglänzende Palast sind schön ohne Gleichen. Wenn ein Musial die Lösung des Lebens vermittelt und dazu wunderschön ist, mag dies wohl eine zufriedenstellende Frucht samt Schale und Fruchtfleisch sein. Und sogar mitsamt Fruchtfleisch, welches von Kant als nicht kategorisch nötig betrachtet wurde- auch Kant würde da mit Komplimenten nicht sparen.
Was ist die Schale des Lebens, und was ist das Fruchtfleisch? Ist das Fruchtfleisch nicht Existenz und Leben, und die Schale die Kunst? Das Fruchtfleisch des Lebens muss mit schöner Kunst eingehüllt werden, damit wir ein nobleres und hehreres Leben führen können. Im Grunde sind Fruchtfleisch und Schale relativ. Fuer jemanden mag die Kunst auch Fruchtfleisch des Lebens sein.

껍질 없는 알맹이 또는 알맹이 없는 껍질...이런 과일은 뭔가 부족하게 보인다. 예술은 어떨까? 또 인생은 어떤가? 플라톤을 비롯한 과거의 철학자들은 예술의 알맹이를 중시했다. 예술이라면 진리와 선을 가르쳐주어야한다고 본 것이다. 아름답기만 한 예술작품은 속이 빈 껍질이라면서 예술가를 억압했다. 철학자 칸트는 이런 철학사를 뒤엎었다. 사실 칸트는 엄격한 사람으로서 좋아서 한 선행은 진정한 도덕성을 갖지 못하며 오로지 도덕법칙을 존중하는 마음 즉 의무감에서 한 행위만이 도덕적이라고 보았다. 도덕에서 그렇게도 까다롭던 칸트가 예술을 억압과 부담에서 해방시킨 것은 너무도 의외이다. 칸트는 예술이 무엇을 표현하든지 간에 아름답기만 하면(매력적이기만 하면) 된다고 보았다. “아름다운 대상의 표현이 아니라 대상의 아름다운 표현!” 예술이 진리를 표현할 수도 있지만 진리의 표현은 예술의 본질 또는 예술을 평가하는 잣대는 아니라는 것이다. 예술의 본질은 아름다운 표현 즉 껍질에 있다는 것이다.
9월 26일부터 10월5일까지 예술의 전당 토월극장에서 공연된 뮤지컬 ‘언약의 여정’은 아무런 희망도 남아있지 않은 것같은 절망적 현실에서 빠져나올 예술적 논리를 제공한다. 그것은 누구든지 심지어 죄수까지도 소중한 존재임을 깨닫는 것이며 어딜가든지 항상 함께하는 하느님이 계시다는 것을 믿는 것이다. 국내에서 창작한 뮤지컬임에도 미국 동부의 명문고등학교를 배경으로 한 점이 신선하게 보이며 그럼으로써 게이 부부밑에서 사는 아이, 혼혈아등 보다 다양한 삶의 현실들을 등장시킨다. 멋진 밴드를 꿈꾸지만 살인과 마약사건에 연루되어 투옥된 캐린의 이야기가 질투로 인해 형들에 의해 노예로 팔려간 성경속의 요셉과 교차되면서 서로가 서로의 은유가 된다. 사실 요셉이야기는 이 뮤지컬 속의 삽화임에도 무대나 의상 그리고 이야기의 환상성으로 인해 본래의 스토리를 압도하고도 남는다. 그래서 감상자는 종교적 분위기에 자신도 모르게 젖어든다. 작품 속에 스며든 종교성은 인간보편성과 합일할 때만이 특정 종교의 전도에서 탈피하여 종파를 초월하여 모든 이에게 공감을 획득할 수 있다. 다행이도 이 뮤지컬은 주인공의 절망에서의 탈출과 더불어 감상자의 삶에 희망이라는 달이 뜨도록 하고 긍정적인 쪽으로의 전환을 노림으로써 이미 인간보편성에 발을 성큼 들여놓고 있다.
배우들의 춤과 노래 그리고 밤하늘의 별빛, 이집트의 찬란한 황금빛 궁전은 더없이 아름답다. 뮤지컬이 인생의 해답을 주면서 아름답다니 그것은 껍질과 알맹이가 모두 갖춰진 만족스런 과일일 것이다. 칸트가 없어도 무방하다고 본 알맹이까지 가졌으니 칸트가 봐도 칭찬을 아끼지 않을 것이다.
인생의 껍질은 무엇이며 알맹이는 무엇인가? 알맹이는 생존과 생명이며 껍질은 예술이 아닌가? 삶의 알맹이를 아름다운 예술로 감싸 보다 품위있고 풍요로운 인생을 살아야한다. 사실 알맹이와 껍질도 상대적이다. 누군가에게는 예술이 인생의 알맹이일 수도 있다.
