Vulgarisation scientifique et idéologie
Les gens oisifs aiment à croire, à saisir desrésultats bien prononcés ; le doute, les restrictions les fatiguent ; l'étude les dégoûte. Quoi !il faudra plusieurs années d'un travail assidupour se mettre en état de comprendre deuxcents pages d'algèbre, qui apprendront seulement comment l'axe de la terre se meut dansles cieux ; tandis qu'en cinquante pages biencommodes à lire, on peut savoir, sans lamoindre peine, quand et comment la terre, lesplanètes, les comètes, etc. etc., ont été for-mées. (Avertissement des éditeurs de l'Editionde Kehl aux Eléments de philosophie de Newton, Voltaire, Œuvres complètes, t. XXVIII.)
Du sexe, et de l'expérience de diffusion massive dont il est l'objet, lascience peut tirer quelque bénéfice ou enseignement. Elle ne s'en fait pasfaute, ayant trouvé son public de non-initiés prêts à la profanation : lesprofanes. Avides d'un savoir de culture (savoir qui tourne à vide), ces non-initiés se voient offrir, maquillée en quadrichromie, l'aventure de l'esprithumain ; ils se voient conduits au coeur des congrès scientifiques, acculés àl'écoute du jargon scientifique. Au nom des titres de revues telles que leMillion, Science et Vie, Toute la science, Tout l'Univers, Vous saurez tout,Je sais tout, Clefs des connaissances, Alpha, Spoutnik, Constellation, Sciences et Avenir, Atomes, etc., sous la garantie de ces promesses, un strip-tease s'annonce, celui de la Nature, se défaisant de l'habit pailleté que lui avaientcoupé, dans le tissu des syllabes gréco-latines et des nombres, de pudiquessavants. Monteurs de ce spectacle profanatoire, les vulgarisateurs, traducteurs de l'impossible à traduire (la peau ne peut être traduction du vêtement),se font les dispensateurs bien intentionnés d'une culture qui voudrait fairebon marché de l'effort indispensable à son acquisition.
Science sans douleur, telle se propose d'être la vulgarisation scientifique,impliquant du même coup l'idée d'une « douleur scientifique » dont le hérossouffrant ne peut être que le spécialiste.
Le public a le droit de savoir, dit-on, il a droit de regard sur la vérité, [150] ou du moins sur une part de celle-ci car on veut craindre les effets qu'undévoilement total ne manquerait pas d'avoir. Et le partage une fois délimitéentre ce qui est à dire et ce qui ne l'est pas, se pose la question du « Commentle dire? ». Le problème de la communication du savant au profane estessentiel à une politique culturelle qui voudrait inclure l'accès à la véritéscientifique. On ne peut l'aborder que dans le sens (la direction) qu'il établit du savant au profane par l'intermédiaire du vulgarisateur ; de la science auquotidien par l'intermédiaire d'un savoir ; du langage scientifique aux « idéescommunes » par l'intermédiaire de certains procédés. Voilà ce qui se proposeà l'analyse.
1. Le langage de la science.
Autonome, le discours scientifique se fait subversif quant à l'univers dela signification. En s'effaçant par l'exclusion arbitraire du « je » (remplacéparfois par un « nous » emphatique dont personne n'est la dupe), le savantse signifie sans signifiant. La fonction spéculaire du langage se réduit àcelle d'un miroir sans tain. Le savant s'y ignore dans le lieu qu'il s'assigne,de l'autre côté du miroir, réfléchissant le monde.
La science n'est que discours, publications, textes, dont l'autonomie assurela neutralité, mais non l'innocence. Au contraire, c'est cette neutralité quifonde sa subversion.1 Absolue est la coupure entre telle publication despécialiste et tel autre texte, car de la première surgit ce qui se donne pourvrai (ce qui se nomme vrai et donc passible d'infirmation ou de confirma-lion), quand du second ne se plait à surgir que le vraisemblable (combinatoirede signifiés-conformes). Par son discours, la science se donne un ensemblede signifiants dont le jeu, réglé par ce qui ne peut s'y avouer, à savoir lesavant, ne se suture qu'à sa méthode (son axiomatique), seul indice de saproductivité. Le vrai, comme un furet, y court à travers le chemin signifiantque le savant lui trace, mais la trace du savant manque ; seule la méthodes'y indique d'une manière explicite (instruments matériels ou conceptuels),grâce au privilège qu'elle a de pouvoir être identique à elle-même,2 etdonc, reproductible. Face à son discours, le savant doit pouvoir subirl'épreuve de permutation. Le vrai le congédie au seuil de son propre discours et si le sujet s'en accommode, c'est qu'il y gagne de préserver sondésir de l'usure de l'objet.
La recherche scientifique s'explicite dans son but d'acquérir la connaissance de ce qui n'est pas connu. Dès lors que cette connaissance advient [151] (hasard ou méthode), elle anéantit du même coup le sens d'une activité quin'en avait que grâce à la relation qu'elle entretenait avec l'inconnu. Ledésir de l'objet inconnu, se déporte sur le connu par la découverte, dontl'aspect substitutif, aussitôt reconnu par le savant, ne peut être assumé parlui. Le désir se trouve relancé dans une nouvelle manipulation signifiantedont l'unique signifié plausible est, nommément, l'inconnu, le manque. Dececi, entre autres, il vient que la science ne peut trouver d'achèvement.
Ensemble signifiant, qui, en oubliant sa 'véritable origine, escamote sa finvéritable (sa faim du vrai), le discours scientifique se croit dès lors discoursclos et fait croire à la possibilité de sa clôture dans un savoir universel. Enfait, le signifiant ouvre ici une béance sur le plan du signifié, dont la clôtureest indispensable aux formations idéologiques. L'idéologie se nourrit d'uneclôture du signifié. La science vit de la brèche qu'elle y introduit3 par le jeude ses signifiants dont elle voudrait fournir la clôture impossible. Leur opposition est radicale, leur lutte inévitable. C'est de cette lutte que la vulgarisation scientifique (en tant que littérature) rend compte.
2. De la science au savoir.
« Un savoir, c'est (aussi) l'espace dans lequel le sujet peut prendre positionpour parler des objets auxquels il a affaire dans son discours. »4 Le savoirassigne ainsi son lieu à l'activité du sujet recherchant, lieu qui se soutientde son institutionnalisation marquée (laboratoires, universités, centres derecherches, Princeton de toutes sortes).
L'institution autorise la recherche du savant, la soutient avec la force del'arbitraire, lui donne son faux-sens essentiel dont se nourrira la littératurede vulgarisation. Car le sens de cette recherche ne se signifie que dans sonrapport à l'ignorance de ce qu'elle veut connaître. L'institution fonctionnecomme couverture. Elle ne développe ses règles formelles qu'en fonction dujeu qu'elle doit rendre possible, et non de quelconques impératifs de rentabilité attachés aux exigences d'une production. Ignorante de ce qu'elle veutdécouvrir, la recherche se scande dans des rythmes aléatoires qui doivent setrouver des justifications institutionnelles. Indispensable, l'institution l'està la science, comme la conscience, perpétuel faux-sens, l'est à l'inconscient.
Mais le savoir est également le biais par lequel s'instaure le contact entredeux types d'ignorance : celle du savant et celle du profane, celle de celuiqui doit apprendre et celle de celui qui doit oublier, pour trouver. Les situations sont analogues (le face à face avec l'inconnu) mais engendrent desactivités très différentes. Dans la première, l'inconnu, déjà formulé, exigeune activité qui, de l'existence tangible de son but, tire son caractère labo-rieux. Dans la seconde, l'absence d'une forme de l'inconnu permet le librejeu d'une activité qui s'invente au fur et à mesure de sa progression signifiante.5 La première peut faire l'objet d'une stratégie dont la rentabilité [152] fondera la validité. Les règles s'y déduisent du but à atteindre. La secondesuppose des mouvements tactiques dont le court terme réjouit le chercheuren déjouant sans arrêt son attente (sevrage des résultats escomptés et surprisede la découverte qui s'improvise d'elle-même). Une psychologie des enthousiasmes et des déceptions scientifiques dont la démesure ne peut s'expliquerque par l'aspect tactique de la recherche, devrait confirmer cette hypothèse.Le travail d'apprentissage (learning) ne dispose pas à de telles réjouissances.Ce que l'on trouve devait être trouvé dans la forme même où on le trouve.L'apprentissage se réduit dans l'acquisition de la formule.
Toutes les méthodes heuristiques de la science6 ont ce commun dénominateur de créer par l'application de règles, une combinatoire de signifiantsdevant susciter l'inquiétude questionneuse du « Qu'est-ce que ça va donner? » ;ce qui justifie la réponse de ce spécialiste de bon sens à qui l'on demandaitquels critères de vérité il appliquait pour valider le résultat d'une expérience : « L'essentiel, dit-il, c'est que ça marche ! »
Le savoir, donc, est ce qui, d'une combinatoire signifiante, fait surgir dessignifiés, dont la neutralité ne pourra pas préserver l'innocence par rapportà l'univers idéologique. Ce savoir, de gré ou de force, se verra greffé à l'arborescence des grands axes sémantiques sous-jacents aux formations idéologiques. L'opération de greffe caractérise le passage du vrai au vraisemblable,la littérature de vulgarisation.
3. Vulgarisation et enseignement.
Cette littérature, il s'agit de ne pas la confondre avec l'enseignementqui, tout en mettant en place une situation structurellement identique (communication de celui qui sait à celui qui ne sait pas), s'en trouve cependantformellement et fonctionnellement distinct. Dans son mode même de communication, la vulgarisation se donne essentiellement sous la forme d'untexte7 alors que l'enseignement est, d'une manière idéale, acte de parole. [153] Evanescence par excellence, la parole ne permet la rétention par l'auditeurque du processus réflexif lui-même et c'est ce qui lui confère son aspectinitiatique. Jusque dans la défroque du cours magistral, elle est possibilitéd'échanges, exigence de questions, production de sens de part et d'autrede l'échange. Le texte au contraire se donne d'emblée comme sens gestaltisé,signification close. Le sens n'y est pas à trouver mais à re-trouver.
Enserré entre son début et son achèvement, le texte de vulgarisation estimmédiatement spectacle, monstration simple de ce qui fut dé-montré, défilécarnavalesque de concepts qui, grace à d'ingénieux ciselages métaphoriques,se sont trouvés les masques propres à les déléguer, à les fixer, dans l'universidéologique.
Cette différence formelle entre vulgarisation et enseignement, texte etparole, se dédouble (ou se confirme) dans une différence fonctionnelle : l'enseignement se fait initiation à une certaine parole et à une certaine pratiquequi convergent dans une certaine mentalité (souvent dite « esprit scientifique »). L'enseigné, par le respect des règles rituelles d'acquisition, prend sesdistances avec l'expérience immédiate, et l'écartement ainsi produit est faitde désimplication, détournement, désappropriation de son propre langage,nécessaires au vouloir-connaître ce qu'on ne connaît pas... Par contre, lavulgarisation, définie par la formule du vouloir-savoir ce qu'on savait déjà,est faite de réappropriation du discours scientifique par le langage courant,abolition de la distance. Le savoir s'y forme à coups d'implications (et nond'ex-plications), conquête des signifiants scientifiques par le signifié idéologique. Comme la science se réalise par la technique, elle se signifie par lavulgarisation.
4. Le langage de la vulgarisation.
En tant que texte, la vulgarisation s'offre ainsi à une analyse plus profonde. Les remarques qui vont suivre, destinées à indiquer l'intérêt decertains angles de vue et à poser quelques repères méthodologiques, ne prétendent pas à l'exhaustivité. La scène dressée par le vulgarisateur met enjeu de multiples phénomènes qui pourront faire penser, dans la présentationque nous voulons en faire, à un certain éclectisme méthodologique. En fait,les différentes perspectives adoptées auront l'intérêt non seulement de souligner les multiples facettes de notre objet et sa complexité, mais égalementde poser le problème d'une réunion des différentes tendances méthodologiques évoquées.
L'accès que nous nous proposons d’ouvrir pour délimiter la spécificité du langagede la vulgarisation par rapport à d'autres « langages » (langage de la science,de l'enseignement, etc.) doit passer par l'étude des textes et de ce qui règleleur production dans l'opération qui consiste à les vraisemblabiliser.8 Mais [154] cette opération, dans le cas de la littérature de vulgarisation, doit satisfaireà une double exigence. En effet, les textes doivent mettre en jeu une première conformité au vrai qui est censé s'étaler à la surface du discoursproprement scientifique dont nous avons dit qu'il était pure combinatoiresignifiante ; et deuxièmement, une conformité au vrai qui est sécrété parl'idéologie conçue comme la cohérence propre au système du sens régi par unmodèle culturel. Ces deux exigences sont à traiter séparément bien que lessolutions qu'elles suscitent soient étroitement imbriquées pour former uncertain type de discours. Enfin, il nous faudra rendre compte de ce processusd'imbrication en montrant comment le texte se trouve une cohérence intégratrice.
4.1. La conformité au « vrai » scientiftque. La littérature de vulgarisationne ménage pas ses lecteurs. Ainsi, on n'y parle jamais de ferments, maisd'enzymes, de bleus, mais d'ecchymoses, de maux de tête, mais de céphalées,de saignements de nez, mais d'épistaxis, etc. Si la science peut justifierl'usage de ces « imprononçables » qui lui permettent d'ouvrir, au niveau dessignifiés, cette béance nécessaire au recueillement de la découverte, si cestermes constituent par là, ce qu'il y a d'essentiel à la ponctuation signifiantede la vérité scientifique, alors il faut que la vulgarisation en use comme signes que ce qu'elle raconte est bien semblable au vrai.
Qu'on se garde de croire, avec Etiemble, que, s'il est possible aux mathématiciens de parler de « platitude et privilège », d'« algèbres intègres et sanstorsion » ou de « surfaces de Rieman insuffisamment pincées »,9 les mêmespossibilités d’élégance peuvent échoir aux chimistes, médecins, biologistes,physiciens et autres. Pour français qu'ils soient, ces termes n'en sont queplus subversifs quant à leurs significations courantes auxquelles il est interditde croire si l'on veut les comprendre. A ce propos, il est utile de remarquerque plus un domaine scientifique se trouve autonomisé par rapport au réelet indépendant de lui quant aux règles qui instituent sa progression signifiante, moins il est vulgarisable bien que son vocabulaire soit plus simple.La médecine, dont le jargon est pourtant l'un des plus complexes qui soient,est néanmoins un domaine hautement vulgarisable s'il faut en croire lafréquence des articles et le nombre de revues qui en traitent d'une manièreexclusive. Un tel paradoxe n'est qu'apparent si l'on tient compte du faitque la science ne se développe qu'à partir de la neutralisation d'un réelqui ne peut se soustraire aux effets de polarisation du langage courant. Conçuencore comme instrument d'appréhension du réel, le langage développe surle plan des signifiés une cohérence qui doit se trouver une adéquation avec lacohérence postulée du référent. Le degré d'ajustement entre le réel et sonreflet langagier, ou entre le langage et son reflet référentiel, donne la mesurede la résistance d'une formation idéologique et garantit la consistance de lalogique intégratrice qui préside à l'articulation des signifiés.
L'usage des signifiants scientifiques dans la littérature de vulgarisationrelève donc d'une fonction qui est moins de signifier que de marquer lavraisemblance. « Est vraisemblable tout discours qui est en rapport de simi- [155] larité, d'identification, de reflet avec un autre », disait Julia Kristeva,10 justifiant du même coup l'ironie qui consiste à dire qu'à l'image de son modèle,la vulgarisation est « science », mais « science pour ignorants ». Reflet dudiscours scientifique, elle en tire, pour ses besoins d'identification, ce qu'ilen est le plus facile d'extraire, les éléments lexicaux, sans savoir que ceux-cin'ont valeur que de signifiants, c'est-à-dire, ponctuation méthodologique dela découverte.
Pour reprendre une image de notre début, le vulgarisateur est celui quiétame le miroir du discours scientifique et change le savant de place afin dele suturer au monde spéculaire qu'il construit. Le vulgarisateur interviewele savant et le force à dire « je » au milieu de son jargon.
En tant que marques du vraisemblable, les signifiants scientifiques fontcroire, par-delà le mystère de leur signification, à la vérité du récit quigravite autour d'eux. Ils deviennent ferments de connotations libres, c'est-à-dire non-asservies par un noyau de sens précis. Leur apparition au gré descontextes, tout en étant imprévisible au plus haut degré, n'ont aucun effetsur la redondance bien connue et pourtant paradoxale des textes de vulgarisation. Points d'ancrage du vraisemblable, ils n'ont aucune influence surla logique des possibles narratifs propres au récit de vulgarisation. Exclus,en tant que porteurs de sens, de la structure narrative des récits, ils secomportent comme ces « notations insignifiantes », « apparemment soustraites à la structure sémiotique du récit », que Roland Barthes relevait et analysaitrécemment.11 Dès lors, on comprend également qu'ils puissent devenir leslieux où les récits s'incurvent dans des directions imaginaires donnant lieuà tous les phénomènes d'extrapolation abusive qui stupéfient les savants eux-mêmes. Grâce à eux, le rêve (ou la foi) avec ses mystères créés par les symboles, devient possible, comme en témoignent des revues comme Planète quiréclame de ses lecteurs, dans son auto-publicité, « un égal appétit de rêve etd'imagination ».
4.2. Procédés rhétoriques : la métaphore. Deuxième exigence du vraisemblable la conformité du texte au vrai idéologique. Alors qu'auparavant,nous avions mis en évidence la manipulation par le vulgarisateur d'une sériede signifiants-conformes, nous allons voir maintenant dans quelle mesurece vulgarisateur se fait producteur de signifiés-conformes. Une telle production s'origine dans la rhétorique qui est art de produire le sens à partir dujeu des figures du discours, art de faire produire le sens par la langue enexploitant les possibilités d'équivalences qu'elle structure au niveau dessignifiés. De l'une de ces figures, la vulgarisation fait un usage privilégié : la métaphore, et on ne peut s'empêcher, en lisant certains articles, de pensersouvent à La Bruyère qui vulgarisa si bien, par un emploi presque exclusifde ce procédé, les racines grecques.
Cependant, ce n'est qu'à partir du moment où la science se structure ensavoir que le jeu des équivalences est possible. La compréhension y trouveson compte grâce à la conjonction comme, prélude à tous les exemples et àtoutes les digressions. C'est aussi cette conjonction qui permet une réinsertion plausible des résultats scientifiques dans la logique des idées propre à [156] l'idéologie. La métaphore est ainsi à l'origine de la création de paradigmesparticuliers destinés à rendre possible l'intégration des signifiants scientifiques à l'intérieur du système de la langue.
II est remarquable de voir à quel point certains textes du genre multiplient les métaphores. A titre d'exemple, on tire d'un article paru dans Sélection du Reader's Digest consacré aux pulsars,12 les équivalences suivantes, avantmême que n'apparaisse dans le texte le terme dont l'article se voudrait uneexplication :

Ainsi, peu à peu, le terme de pulsar se donne des dimensions propres àl'intégrer dans le langage courant. Toutes les métaphores utilisées gravitentd'ailleurs autour d'un nombre restreint d'axes sémantiques construits surles oppositions

dont la combinaison peut donner lieu à une infinité de formulations différentes, intégrables, grâce au sens, à la logique de l'idéologie. [157]
Ces métaphores qui renvoient à différents plans de significations intégrés (anthropomorphiques, mécaniques, psychologiques, cosmologiques, etc.) sontdestinées à permettre au lecteur de se faire des idées manipulables en tantqu'idées à l'intérieur d'une logique préexistante. La vulgarisation provoqueainsi une augmentation purement quantitative du capital d'idées disponiblessans en changer l'agencement qualitatif. Le fond idéologique reste le mêmeet définit l'orthodoxie de la manipulation des notions vulgarisées, l'orthodoxie des échanges auxquels ces notions se prêtent dans les conversations debistrot ou de salon,14 Il s'agit donc bien d'une application de la formule dusavoir ce que l'on savait déjà, dans la mesure où les règles d'utilisation ducapital d'idées restent inchangées quel que soit le niveau quantitatif de ce capital. Ce sont ces règles d'utilisation dont la vulgarisation s'oblige à assurerla permanence - celle-ci ayant été mise en question pour un moment, celuide la découverte scientifique - qui constituent l'idéologie à proprementparler.
La vulgarisation est essentiellement présentation des réponses que la sciencedonne à certains problèmes. Mais pour que ces réponses puissent avoir unimpact sur le public des profanes, il faut qu'elles correspondent à des interrogations préexistantes à l'intérieur de leur subjectivité. Le jeu des questionsagencées selon des règles idéologiques préexiste au jeu des réponses et cetteantériorité marque l'échec d'une vulgarisation qui tendrait à devenir moyenprivilégié de transmission des connaissances. Tout le travail du vulgarisateurconsistera à reformuler le « vrai problème »15 scientifique pour le ramener àune interrogation vraisemblable pouvant susciter des réponses vraisemblables.Le déjà-là des questions marque la limite idéologique des réponses que sontles résultats scientifiques vulgarisés. Alors que la recherche du spécialiste sedéfinissait dans la combinatoire signifiante qu'il suscitait pour poser un vraiproblème sachant que sa solution pressentie (l'hypothèse) devra être validéepar la reproductibilité des règles qui fondent le nouvel agencement desdonnées, la recherche du profane, elle, est une tentative de sécuriser ses interrogations personnelles ( « d'où vient le monde? d'où est-ce que je viens?qu'est-ce que la mort? suis-je normal? où est la maladie? où se trouventles limites? etc. ») en les validant par l'intermédiaire des résultats scientifiques vraisemblabilisés.
4.3 Ebauche d'un schéma actantiel.16 La double conformité vraisemblabilisante (imbrication des signifiants-conformes et des signifiés-conformes) que [158] nous venons d'indiquer ne suffit pas, en fait, pour garantir l'impact que peutavoir la science sur la société. Il faut encore que le texte se trouve une cohérence globale, justifie ses créations paradigmatiques en mettant en placeune dimension syntagmatique qui puisse camoufler le jeu des métaphores.Du discours scientifique, le vulgarisateur va tirer un récit dans lequel ondoit retrouver les catégories actantielles, justificatrices d'une structure narrative. Le schéma actantiel sous-jacent aux récits dont il est question doit enoutre pouvoir s'appliquer à la plupart des textes de vulgarisation. Il doit présenter une invariance structurale qui seule pourra expliquer l'accession de lavulgarisation à la dignité d'un « genre littéraire » comme le voulait Pierrede Latil. Le schéma actantiel doit rendre compte de ce que pourraient êtrecertaines règles du genre.
La vulgarisation se pose d'emblée comme le récit de « l'aventure humainede tous les temps », « l'aventure de l'esprit humain ». Au vu de cette annonce,il faut s'apprêter à prendre connaissance d'une action dont le déroulementaventureux constitue l'intrigue ou le thème des différents récits. De pluscette action se circonscrit dans des lieux qui la distinguent de l'activité quotidienne et banale, des lieux propres à la recevoir dans toutes ses particularités,de sorte que, d'une manière idéale, rien ne pourra échapper à l'investigationdu conteur qui se voudrait absolument fidèle. La localisation spatio-temporelle de l'action est l'une des premières exigences du récit qui va être conté.En effet, le temps va également être immédiatement situé. C'est, en principe,l'actualité, mais il faut que celle-ci soit capable de faire débuter l'actionrelatée et donc, que la coupure avec ce qui se faisait auparavant soit nettementmarquée.

Les lieux de l'action se prêtent d'ailleurs parfaitement à cette action aventureuse de l'esprit humain : laboratoires (où se devine le danger d'explosionssubites), centres de recherches, universités, etc.
Dans ces lieux donc, privilégiés par rapport à nos lieux quotidiens, s'agitent, discutent, expérimentent, la foule de nos héros, les savants, tout occupésde leur désir des connaissances que la Raison (celle qui a remplacé le Dieude Descartes) destine au genre humain, à l'Humanité. Dans leur activité,les savants se trouvent puissamment aidés par l'Etat, fournisseur de crédits,fondateur d'institutions, fabricant de techniques. Enfin, ce qui s'oppose à lasatisfaction du désir scientifique, c'est la Nature, qui ne pardonne pas l'erreur,obstacle dans ce qu'elle maintient en elle d'irrationnel, de mystérieux voirede dangereux. Le savant est en effet présenté comme perpétuellement enlutte contre une nature rebelle à son appréhension, qui s'efforce de déjouerses expériences, qui se venge par des explosions ou des radiations, qui brouilleconstamment les cartes qu'il tente d'ordonner. Le récit de vulgarisationcorrespondrait ainsi au schéma suivant :

Il est aisé de voir qu'une telle structure narrative ne correspond absolument pas à la réalité structurelle du travail scientifique.
a) Le savant est devenu un héros, susceptible par là de vedettisation (récupération idéologique de l'homme subversif, c'est-à-dire déviant par rapportau modèle - découpé par l'idéologie - de l'homme moyen, normal).
b) Son désir se porte sur un objet, les connaissances, ce qui transformele savant en un érudit, désireux d'augmenter son capital de connaissances.Or nous avons justement défini le désir du savant, comme un pur désir,désir sans objet. Le savant est celui qui donne corps à son désir dans saprogression signifiante vers l'inconnu. Si un objet se proposait comme dési-rable, le désir se trouverait défini et donc inapte à faire surgir la combinatoiresignifiante nécessaire à la découverte.
c) Les textes de vulgarisation postulent (d'une manière souvent implicite)l'existence d'un Destinateur et d'un Destinataire. Or il est évident d'unepart, que la recherche du savant ne peut se définir en fonction de sentimentsaltruistes (le savant n'est ni bienfaiteur, ni malfaiteur par rapport aux applications de ses découvertes), d'autre part, que les connaissances dont il sevoit le possesseur ne lui viennent pas d'un Autre quelconque.
d) Enfin, s'il existait un opposant à la recherche scientifique, ce ne pourrait être que l'opinion ou la méconnaissance, qui n'est que reconnaissanceanticipée, seule source de l'erreur scientifique. C'est le sens, tel qu'il se structure dans le sens commun, le bon sens, ou le sens idéologique, qui oppose à larecherche du savant son obstacle essentiel. Quant à l'adjuvant, bien plus [160] que l'Etat, ses institutions et ses crédits, nous dirons que dans la recherchedu savant, c'est sa méthode.
Ainsi, par une application très élémentaire du modèle actantiel de Greimas,il nous est permis de rendre compte de la manière dont la vulgarisationassure l'opération idéologique qui consiste à récupérer tout ce que la sciencea de profondément subversif, son langage en particulier. Cette récupérationest automatique, immédiate. En outre, elle se camoufle derrière le butexplicite qu'elle se propose et qui est de transmettre des connaissances. Elleocculte son aspect idéologique par l'illusion culturelle qu'elle provoque.
Cette analyse sommaire avait pour but de mettre en évidence le précipitéidéologique déclenché par l'insertion des signifiants scientifiques à l'intérieurdu langage courant. Par cet amalgame particulier, les découvertes scientifiques se trouvent captées par les pôles aimantés des grandes oppositionssémantiques distribuées par l'idéologie dans l'univers de la signification.
L'idéologie a horreur du vide et en particulier de ce vide que se plait àcreuser, au niveau des signifiés, la combinatoire formelle des signifiantsscientifiques. L'univers de la signification doit être clos et, garant de cetteclôture, est l'axe partitif qui sépare le bon du mauvais, l'utile du non-utile,le beau du laid, etc. Dans cette mesure seulement, tout ce qui se donnecomme signifiant à l'intérieur de la langue, doit être décidable quant aureflet qu'il porte sur l'écran du signifié. Ce qui est indécidable quant ausens est subversif. Or, tout signifiant scientifique est, par définition, indécidable, susceptible d'être l'usurpateur d'un sens et de se trouver rejeté horsdu champ de la vérité, susceptible de désigner l'erreur aussi bien que lavérité et c'est de cette ambivalence, de cette incertitude quant à ce qu'ilsignifie qu'il développe sa subversion.
Par le biais de ce qui se propose comme origine d'une culture scientifique,nous avons indiqué l'un des problèmes fondammtaux de toute politiqueculturelle qui tenterait de développer chez l'individu sa créativité. L'individupeut chercher satisfaction à ses désirs culturels dans des produits dont lessignifiés se meuvent sous appellation contrôlée, se trouvent garantis conformespar le sceau de l'idéologie. Par contre, ces désirs ne peuvent pas se cherchereux-mêmes leur progression signifiante, ils ne peuvent pas s'autodéterminerdans l'incertitude de leur aboutissement. Le savant détient ce privilège qu'ilpaye en s'excluant de son discours. Pour que cette exclusion soit possible, ilfaut que le savant se soutienne d'autre chose l'institution. De même le foudont on renforce la folie en l'excluant de son discours, en empêchantl'assomption de sa parole par l'Autre, grâce à l'asile. Seul, l'artiste a puobtenir grâce pendant longtemps ; mais c'est que sa création se situait auniveau du signifié et non du signifiant. Ce n'est qu'aujourd'hui qu'il devientsubversif et donc soumis aux mêmes mécanismes de vedettisation que lesavant.

Scientific and ideological vulgarisation
Idle people like to believe, to seize clearly stated results; doubt and restrictions tire them; studying disgusts them. What! Several years of sustained work will be needed to understand two hundred pages of algebra, which will only teach how the axis of the earth revolves in the skies; whilst in fifty pages of easy read, one may know, without the slightest labour, when and how the earth, the planets, the comets, etc., etc. where formed. (Warning to the editors of the Edition of Kehl to the Elements of philosophy of Newton, Voltaire, Complete works, t.XXVIII.)
From sex, and from the experience of massive diffusion of which it is the object, science may reap some benefits or teachings. It doesn't pass on the opportunity, having found an audience of non-initiates willing to profane: lay people. Eager to have a knowledge of culture ( knowledge which spins on thin air), these non-initiates are offered, made-up as four-colour printing, the adventure of the human mind; the are taken to the heart of scientific colloquia, forced with their backs to the wall to listen to scientific jargon. In the name of reviews such as Le Million (the Million), Science et Vie (Science and life), Toute la science (All of science), Tout l'Univers (All of the universe), Vous saurez tout (You shall know all), Je sais tout (I know all), Clefs des connaissances (The keys to knowledge), Alpha, Spoutnik, Constellation, Sciences et Avenir (Sciences and Future), Atomes (Atoms), under the guarantee of such promises, a strip-tease is taking place, that of Nature, leaving the sequined clothes that chaste scientists cut out for it from the cloth of greco-latin syllables and numbers. Creators of this profanating spectacle, the vulgarisors, translators of the impossible to translate ( skin cannot translate clothes), put themselves in the position of purveyors of a culture that would like to sell cheaply the indispensable effort required for its acquisition.
A painless science, that is what scientific vulgarisation proposes to be, thereby implying the idea of a “scientific pain” of which the suffering hero can only be the specialist.
The public has a right to know, it is claimed, it has the right to oversight, [150] at least partially, for one wants to fear the effects that a total unveiling would unmistakably have. Arises the question of “How to say it?”, once a clear delimitation has been achieved of what must be said and what must not. The communicational problem between the scholar and the lay person is essential to a cultural policy aiming to include access to scientific truth. It can only be approached in the sense (direction) established between the scholar and pay person via the vulgarisor; daily science through the intermediary of a knowledge; from the scientific language to “common ideas” via the intermediary of certain processes. This is what shall be analysed.
1.The language of science
Autonomous, the scientific language becomes subversive when it comes to the universe of meaning. Taken out of the picture by the arbitrary exclusion of “I” (sometimes replaced by an empathic “We” fooling no one), the scholar signifies without signifier. The reflecting function of language is reduced to that of a two-way mirror. The scholar ignores him/herself in the place that it has assigned him/herself, on the other side of the mirror, reflecting the world.
Science is mere discourse, publications, texts, whose autonomy guarantees its neutrality, but not its innocence. All to the contrary it is this neutrality that lays the basis for its subversion.1 There exists an absolute break between such and such specialist publication and any other text, for from the former comes what asserts itself as true (that which is named true and is therefore liable to be confirmed or invalidated), whilst from the latter only arises what is likely (the combination of conformed signified). Through its discourse, science gives itself a series of signifiers whose game, ruled by what cannot be admitted, that is the scholar, is sawn onto the method only (its axiomatic), sole indicator of its productivity. The true, much like a ferret, runs through the signifying path that the scholar has delimited for it, but the trace of the scholar is lacking; only the method indicates itself in an explicit manner (material or conceptual instruments), thanks to the privilege it has of being identical to itself2, and thus, reproducible. In the face of his discourse, the scholar must face the test of permutation. The true sends him off at the threshold of his own discourse, and if the subject makes do of it, it is because he can save his desire to preserve the object from wearing out.
Scientific research becomes explicit in its goal to acquire knowledge of what is unknown. As soon as this knowledge comes into being [151] (by chance or method), in the same move it destroys the meaning of an activity that only had one through the relationship it had with the unknown. The desire for the unknown object is displaced on the known through discovery, whose substitutive aspect, immediately acknowledged by the scholar, cannot be assumed by him. The desire is launched into a new signifying manipulation of which the only plausible signified is, namely, the unknown, that which is lacking. From this, amongst other things, comes the fact that science cannot find an completion.
A signifying whole, which, as it forgets its true origin, sabotages its true ending (its hunger for the real), the scientific discourse therefore sees itself as closed and endeavours to make believe in its closedness within a universal knowledge. In fact, the signifier opens up a gulf on the level of the signified, whose closedness is indispensable to ideological formations. Ideology feeds on a closedness of the signified. Science lives from the crack it introduces3 via the game of its signifiers for which it would like to provide the absolute closedness. Their opposition is radical, their struggle unavoidable. It is for this struggle that scientific vulgarisation (as literature) accounts.
2.From science to knowledge
“A knowledge is (also) the space in which the subject can take a position to talk about the objects with which it has to do in his/her discourse.”4 Knowledge thus assigns the location of the activity of the researching subject, a location which is sustained by its marked institutionalisation (laboratories, universities, research centers, Princeton of all types).
The institution authorises the research of the scholar, supports it with the strength of the arbitrary, gives it its essential fake-sense from which it will feed the vulgarisation literature. For the meaning of this research only signifies itself in its relationship to the ignorance of what it wishes to know. The institution works as a cover-up. It develops its formal rules only in function of the game that it must render possible, and not in function of some imperatives of viability attached to the requirements of production. Ignoring what it wishes to discover, research is scanned in random rhythms which must find institutional justifications. The institution is indispensable to science, in the same fashion as consciousness, perpetual fake-sense, is indispensable to unconsciousness.
But knowledge is also the means by which the contact is initiated between two types of ignorance: that of the scholar, and that of the lay person, that of who must learn and who must forget, to find. The situations are analogous (facing the unknown), but generate very different activities. In the first case, the unknown, already formulated, requires an activity, which, from the tangible existence of its goal, gets its labo-rious character. In the latter case, the absence of a form of the unknown allows for the free play of an activity which invents itself in the course of its signifying progression5.The first may be the object of a strategy whose viability will lay the basis for its validity [152]. Rules are deduced from the goal to be achieved. The second supposes tactical movements whose short term rejoice the researcher constantly tricking his expectations (weaning of the expected results and surprise of the discovery which improvises itself). A psychology of the scientific enthusiasms and disappointments, whose disproportion can only be accounted for by the tactical aspect of research, should confirm this hypothesis. The process of learning does not have such rejoicings. What is found had to found in the form in which it is found. Learning is reduced in the acquisition of the formula.
All heuristic methods of science6 have the common denominator of creating, through the application of rules, a combination of signifiers with the purpose of giving rise to the question “What will this yield?”; which justifies the response of this sensible specialist to whom it was asked what criteria he applies to validate the result of an experiment: “The most important, said he, is that it works!”.
Knowledge therefore is a signifying combination leading to the surge of the signified, whose neutrality cannot protect the innocence in the face of the ideological world. This knowledge, willingly or forcefully, shall be grafted onto the arborescence of the great semantic axis underlying ideological formations. This graft operation symbolises the shift from true to likely, the vulgarisation literature.
3.Vulgarisation and teaching
This literature must not be confused with teaching, which, whilst it sets up a structurally similar situation (communication from the one who knows to the one who does not know), is nonetheless formally and functionally distinct. In its very mode of communication vulgarisation exists mainly in the form of a text7, whereas teaching is, in an ideal fashion, an act of speaking [153]. Evanescent per se, speech only allows the listener to retain the reflexive process itself, thus conveying it an initiation aspect. Right up to the unmasking of the prestigious lecture, it is the possibility of exchanges, the requirement of questions, a production of meaning on either side of the exchange. On the other hand, the text gives itself straight away as a gestaltised meaning, a closed meaning. Meaning is not to be found in it, but to be found again.
Enclosed between its beginning and ending, the vulgarisation text is immediately a spectacle, a mere showing of what was demonstrated, a carnival like parading of concepts, which, thanks to ingenious metaphorical chiselings, found the appropriate delegates to represent and fixate them in the ideological universe.
This formal difference between teaching and vulgarisation, speech and text, is doubled up by (or is confirmed) a functional difference: teaching is the initiation to a certain speech and practice which converge in a certain mentality (often coined “scientific spirit”). The material taught distance itself with immediate experience, through the ritualised rules of acquisition, and the rift thus produced is constituted by lack of involvement, avoidance and loss of property of one own language, necessary to the wanting to know what one does not know...On the other hand, vulgarisation, typified by wanting to know what one already knew, is a process of reclaiming the scientific discourse through common language, the abolition of the distance. Knowledge is shaped through implications (and not explanations), the conquest of scientific signifiers by the ideological signified. As science is realised through technique, it is signified by vulgarisation.
4.The language of vulgarisation
As text, vulgarisation may be analysed in more depth. The following remarks, aimed at indicating the interest of certain angles from which to look at the object and to set some methodological barrings, do not pretend to be exhaustive. The scene set up by the vulgariser puts in motion multiple phenomena which might make one think of a methodological eclecticism, in the presentation we would like to make of it. Actually, the different perspectives adopted here have the advantage of not only underlining the multiples sides of our object and its complexity, but also to put forward the question of a re-union of the various methodological tendencies evoked.
The access route we are suggesting in order to delimit the specificity of the language of vulgarisation in comparison to other “languages” (language of science, of teaching, etc.) must necessarily pass through the study of texts and of what regulates their production in the operation that seeks to likelyse them8. But [154] this operation, in the case of the vulgarisation literature, must satisfy a double requirement. Indeed, the texts must involve first a conformity to the true meant to be displayed at the surface of the properly scientific discourse, of which we said that it was mere signifying combination; secondly, a conformity to the true which is exuded by ideology, conceived as the coherence inherent to the system of meaning ruled by a cultural model. Both requirements must be treated separately though the solutions they create are tightly imbricated to form a certain type of discourse. Finally, we shall account for this imbrication process by showing how the text finds its own integrating coherence.
4.1. Conformity to the scientifically true
Vulgarisation literature does not take it easy on its readers. Thus, there is never talk of leaven, but of enzymes, no talk of bruises, but of ecchymosis, or of headaches, but of cephalgia, or again of nose bleedings, but of epistaxis, etc. If science can justify the use of such “unpronouncables” allowing it to open up at the level of the signified this breach required for the contemplation of discovery, if these terms therefore constitute what is essential to the signifying punctuation of scientific truth, then vulgarisation must use them as signs that what it is telling is similar to the truth.
One must not think, like Etiemble that if it is possible for mathematicians to talk of “platitudes and priviledges”, of “honest and un-bendable algebra” or of “surfaces of Rieman not sufficiently pinched”, 9 the same possibilities of elegance fall in the hands of chemists, doctors, biologists, physicists and others. However French/English these terms might be, the terms are nonetheless highly subversive regarding their common meaning, which one cannot believe if one wants to understand them. On this matter, it is useful to note that the more a scientific domain becomes autonomous from reality and independent from the rules that institute its own signifying progression, the less it is easy to vulgarise though its vocabulary is simpler. Medicine, with one of the most complex jargon there is, is however an easily vulgarised domain if one is to believe the frequency of articles and the number of reviews treating this topic exclusively. Such a paradox only comes to light when one takes into account the fact that science only develops from the neutralisation of a 'real', which itself cannot escape from the polarisation effects of lay language. Understood as a tool to seize reality, language develops on the level of the signified a coherence that must find an adequacy to the postulated coherence of the referent. The degree of adjustment between the real and its linguistic reflection, or between language and its referential reflection, gives a notion of the resistance of an ideological formation and guarantees the consistency of the integrative logic presiding over the articulation of the the signified.
The use of scientific signifiers in vulgarisation literature thus have less to do with signifying the likelihood than marking it. “Any discourse in a relation of similarity [155], of identification, of reflection with another is likely.” said Julia Kristeva10, thereby justifying the irony that consists in saying that mirroring its model, vulgarisation is “science”, but a “science for ignorants”. A reflection of the scientific discourse, for its identification needs it draws from it what is easiest to extract, the lexical elements, knowing that those only have a value as signifiers, that is as methodological punctuation of the discovery.
To use again an image from the beginning, the vulgariser is the one who turns the scientific discourse into a mirror and changes the place of the scholar grafting him/her onto the mirroring world he/she constructs. The vulgariser interviews the scholar and forces him/her to say “I” in his jargon.
As traces of the likely, scientific signifiers make one believe, beyond the mystery of their signification, in the truth of the story that gravitates around them. They become leavens of free connotations, that is non-subjugated to a kernel of precise meaning. Their appearance according to contexts, whilst unpredictable to the highest degree, have no effect on the well-known, yet paradoxical, redundancy of vulgarising texts. Anchors of likelihood, they have no influence on the logic of the possible narratives inherent to the vulgarisation story. Excluded, as bearers of meaning, of the narrative structure of stories, they behave like “insignificant gradings”, “apparently relieved of the burden of the story's semiotic structure”, which Roland Barthes recently noted and analysed11. It thus also becomes clear why they may become locations where stories bend according to imaginary directions, making all phenomena of abusive extrapolation possible, stupefying even scholars themselves. Thanks to them, dreaming (or faith), with its symbols generated mysteries, becomes possible, as Journals like Planet show, asking of its readers in its self-publicity an “equal appetite for dreaming and imagining”.
4.2. Rhetorical processes: metaphor
Second requirement of likelihood, the conformity of the text to ideological truth. Whilst earlier we highlighted the manipulation by the vulgariser of a series conforming-signifiers, we shall now see to what extent the vulgariser become producer of conforming-signified. Such a production stems from rhetorics, the art of producing the meaning from the game of the figures of speech, art of having meaning produced through language by exploiting the equivalence possibilities that it structures at the level of the signified. Vulgarisation makes a particular use of such a figure of speech: metaphor, and one cannot help but think, reading certain articles, of La Bruyère who himself vulgarised the Greek roots using this process almost exclusively.
However, it is only when science structures itself as knowledge that this equivalence game is possible. Comprehension gains from the conjunction of like, prelude to all examples and digressions. This conjunction also renders possible a plausible reinsertion of scientific results in the logic of ideas inherent to [156] ideology. Metaphor is at the source of the creation of particular paradigms, aimed at making possible the integration of scientific signifiers at the heart of the system of language. It is remarkable to see how certain texts of that type multiply the use of metaphors. Exemplifying this, we draw on an article published in the Selection of the Reader's Digest12 dedicated to pulsars, the following equivalences before the term which the article aims to explain even appears:

In this fashion, the term pulsar gradually gains dimensions allowing it to be integrated into common language. All the metaphors used actually gravitated around a restricted number of semantic axes built on the oppositions

Terrestrial – extra-terrestrial
Continuous – discontinuous,
which, combined, can give rise to an infinity of different formulations integratable , thanks to meaning, to ideological logic. [157]
These metaphors, which refer to different planes of integrated signification (anthropomorphical, mechanical, psychological, cosmological, etc.), are meant to allow the reader to come up with ideas easily manipulated as ideas within a pre-existing logic. Vulgarisation thus permits a purely quantitative increase of the available capital of ideas, without modifying its qualitative arrangement. The ideological backdrop remains the same and defines the orthodoxy of the manipulation of the vulgarised notions, the orthodoxy of the exchanges to which these notions lend themselves in the framework of mundane talk, be it in public houses or in high society14. It is thus indeed an application of the formula to know what one already knows, for the rules in applying the capital of ideas remain unchanged, regardless what the quantitative level of this capital is. It is the rules of their use that vulgarisation forces itself to ensure the permanence of.- this permanence having been called into question at a point, the one of discovery- for they constitute ideology per se. Vulgarisation is essentially the presentation of the answers science provides to certain problems. But, for these answers to have an impact on the lay people, they must correspond to pre-existing wonderings from within their subjectivity. The game of questions arranged according to ideological rules predates that of answers, and this anteriority signals the failure of a vulgarisation aiming towards becoming a privileged means of knowledge transmission. The work of vulgariser wholly consists in reformulating the true scientific “problem”15 in order to bring it down to a likely questioning, calling for likely answers. The ‘already there’ of the questions designates the ideological limitation of the answers that are vulgarised scientific results. Whilst the research of the specialist consisted in the signifying combination that he called for to raise a true problem, knowing that its felt solution (the hypothesis) would have to be validated by the reproductibility of the rules founding the new arrangement of the data, the research of the lay person is an attempt to secure his/her personal wonderings (“Where does the world come from? Where do I come from? What is death? Am I normal? Where is disease? Where are the limits? Etc.) by validating them through scientific results made likely.
4.3. Outline for an dramatis personae schema16
The double likening conformity (imbrications of conforming-signifiers and conforming-signified) that [158]we have just pointed does not suffice, in fact, to guarantee the impact that science can have on society. Firstly the text must find a global coherence, justify its paradigmatic creations by setting a syntagmatic dimension hiding the metaphor game. From the scientific discourse, the vulgariser must draw a story from which the justifying categories of the dramatis personae can be found again for a narrative structure. The dramatis personae schema underlying the stories in question must, what is more, be applicable to most vulgarisation texts. It must possess a structural invariance, which alone will be able to explain how vulgarisation reached the status of a “literary genre”, as called for by Pierre de Latil. The dramatis personae must account for what certain rules of that genre could be.
Vulgarisation from the onset is pictured as the story of “human adventure of all times”, “the adventure of the human spirit”. Given this announcement, one must be ready to become familiar with an action, whose adventurous unravelling makes up the intrigue or the theme of the various stories. Furthermore, this action is restricted to locations that distinguish it from daily and common activity, locations fit to receive it in all its specificities, so that, in an ideal way, nothing can escape the investigation of the narrator who would strive to be absolutely faithful. The spatial-temporal location of the action is the first requirement of the story that will be told. Indeed, time will also be situated. It is in principle news, but it must be able to start the action told, and hence that the break with what was done before be clearly made.
“Physicists no longer want to see molecules…Today, the position of physics is no longer the same…It is no longer a time of making do….”17
“We are discovering the real face …Since a few weeks…In the past, accounts…But, again, the situation has profoundly changed…”18
“A few weeks ago, the Jean Charcot was leaving Toulon…The research underway (…) raise hopes…A third observation was about to ruin the hypothesis…”19
“In 1839, a German scientist…Biologists are beginning…It effectively now appears possible…”20

One could multiply these examples of spatial-temporal localisation that are reminiscent of the inaugural formula of the stories of the Scriptures: “In these times, Jesus was in …”
The locations of the action are indeed perfectly suited to the adventurous action of the human mind: laboratories (where one imagines the possibility of sudden explosions), research centres, universities, etc.
Thus, in those places, privileged in comparison to common locations, the mass of our heroes, the scholars, is energetically at work, talking, experimenting, all wrapped up in their desire for knowledges that Reason (who took over from Descartes’ god) destined for the human kind, to humanity. In their activity, scholars are powerfully aided by the State, provider of subsidies, founder of institutions, producer of techniques. Finally, that which stands in the way of the fulfilment of scientific desire is Nature, unforgiving of mistakes, obstacle in that it retains a portion of irrationality, mystery and even danger. The scholar is indeed presented as constantly fighting a nature rebellious towards his/her apprehension, attempting to outwit his experiences, taking revenge through explosions or radiations, constantly shuffling the cards he/she attempts to put in order. The vulgarisation story would thus correspond to the following schema:

It is easy to see that such a narrative structure does not at all correspond to the structural nature of scientific work.
a)The scholar has become a hero, liable of being turned into a start (ideological appropriation of a subversive man, that is deviant in regards to the model – cut by ideology- from the average, normal man)
b)His/her desire is directed at one object, knowledge, turning the scholar into an erudite, eager to increase his/her knowledge capital. Now, we have just defined the desire of the scholar as a pure desire, one without object. The scholar is the one who gives flesh to his/her desire in his/her signifying progression towards the unknown. Should an object offers itself as desirable, desire would become defined and thus unable to give surge to the signifying combination required for research.
c)Vulgarisation texts assume (in an often implicit manner) the existence of a recipient and sender. Now, it is obvious on one hand, that the research of the scholar cannot be defined according to altruistic feelings (the scholar is neither benefactor, nor wrongdoer in relation to the application of his/her discoveries), on the other hand that the knowledge of which he/she becomes the holder does not come from whichever Other.
d)Finally, should there be an opponent to scientific research, it could only be public opinion or misappreciation, which is mere anticipated recognition, only source of scientific error. It is meaning, as it is structured in common sense, good common sense, or ideological sense, that poses to the scholar his/her major obstacle. Regarding the adjuvant, more [160]than the state, with its subsidies and institutions, we must say that in the scholar’s quest, it is the method.
Thus, by applying in a rudimentary way Greimas’ Dramatis personae model, we have been able to account for how vulgarisation ensures the ideological operation consisting in recuperating all that is deeply subversive in science, particularly its language. This recuperation is automatic, immediate. Moreover, it is camouflaged behind the aim it set itself, to transmit knowledge. It occults its ideological aspect with the cultural illusion it provokes.
This succinct analysis was aimed at highlighting the ideological precipitate set off by the insertion of scientific signifiers at the heart of common talk. Through this peculiar amalgam, scientific discoveries are caught by the magnetised poles of great semantic oppositions distributed by ideology in the universe of signification.
Ideology despises void, especially this void that likes to dig, at the level of the signified, the formal combination of scientific signifiers. The universe of signification must be closed, and, warrant of this closure is the partitioning axis that separates the good from the bad, the beautiful from the ugly, etc. In this way only, all that affirms itself as signifier in language must be decidable as to the reflection it bares on the screen of the signified. That which is undecidable at the level of meaning is subversive. Now, all scientific signifier is, by essence, undecidable, liable to usurper of a meaning and to be thrown out of the realm of truth, liable to designate equally well error and truth, and it is from this ambivalence, this uncertainty as to what it means that it develops its subversion.
Through what presents itself as a scientific culture, we have pointed out one of the fundamental problems of any cultural policy attempting to develop within the individual his or her creativity. The individual can look for satisfaction of his or her cultural desires in products whose signified are moved under certified origin, guaranteed certified by ideological seal. But, these desires cannot seek on their own for their signifying progression, they cannot determine themselves in the uncertainty of their achievement. The scholar holds this privilege by excluding him/herself in his/her discourse. For this exclusion to be possible, the scholar must support him/herself with something else, the institution. Equally, the madman whose madness is reinforced by excluding him from his discourse, preventing the assumption of his speech by the other, through the asylum. Only the artist had respite for some time; it is because his/her creation functioned at the level of the signified, not the signifying. It is only now that it is becoming subversive, thus subjected to the same processes turning him/her into a star as the scholar.
