An example of interdisciplinary approach to the study of musical instruments: the case of the two viola of the Quintetto Mediceo (1690) by Antonio Stradivari.
Introduction
The Musical Instrument Collection of the Conservatorio di Musica “Luigi Cherubini” in Florence, on display at the Musical Instrument Dept. of the Galleria dell’Accademia since 2001, includes about five hundred instruments, and among them a nucleus of about fifty that belonged to the Grand-dukes of Tuscany, Medici and Lorraine. These were transferred directly from their Palace to the Conservatory in 1863, when Tuscany was annexed to the Reign of Italy, and are therefore richly and continuously documented through inventories, maintenance and administrative accounts and iconography from the time of their acquisition by the court – often directly from the maker – to our days.
Two of the most relevant instruments of this group are a tenor viola and a cello made by Antonio Stradivari in 1690 expressly for Grand-prince Ferdinando de’ Medici following a commission by Marquise Bartolomeo Ariberti. The tenor viola, in particular, is renowned for its exceptional conditions of preservation, presently being the only instrument by Stradivari surviving with original fittings (including bridge, fingerboard and tailpiece, and with the neck in the original position). Moreover the original drawings and models used by Stradivari to make the viola still survive in Cremona (Museo Stradivariano) enabling us to ascertain the complete authenticity of the instrument.
The two instruments were part of a quintet (two violins, an alto and a tenor viola and a cello) that was described in the Medici inventory in 1700, but gradually underwent partial dispersion during the last quarter of the 18th century, under the reign of the Lorreine: the alto viola was recorded in 1776 for the last time, one violin is recorded as “lost” in the following year and the second violin, presently preserved in the collection of the Accademia Nazionale di S. Cecilia in Rome, was stolen by a court musician, Giovanni Felice Mosell, and sold to David Ker for the Hill firm in London in 1794.
The reconstruction of the path followed by the alto viola was, instead, more of a difficult task, since no certain document survives concerning its departure from Florence. However, a viola by Stradivari made in 1690 was acquired by a certain Mr. Bright of the London firm Norris and Barnes, and it is presently the property of the Tuscan Foundation and on loan to the Library of Congress in Washington. The instrument was hypothetically connected to the quintet in 1987 by Charles Beare on the basis of the exact dimensional correspondence to the drawings of the Museo Stradivariano.
In the year 2001, on the occasion of the exhibition Music at the Grand-ducal Court, the surviving violin, the two violas and the cello were re-united and displayed together. On the same occasion a documentation campaign and technological studies were carried out in order to further support, or confute the hypothesis that the so called “Tuscan” alto viola had been, in fact, part of the “Medici” quintet.

Introduction
La collection d’instruments de musique du conservatoire de musique "Luigi Cherubini" de Florence, exposée au Département des Instruments de Musique de la Galleria dell’Accademia depuis 2001, comprend environ cinq cents instruments, parmi lesquels un noyau d’environ cinquante ayant appartenu aux Grands Ducs de Toscane, Medicis et Lorraine. Ceux-ci ont été directement transférés de leur Palais au Conservatoire en 1863, à l’époque où la Toscane fut annexée au royaume d’Italie, et ont donc bénéficié d’une documentation abondante et continue, constituée d’inventaires, de comptes rendus administratifs ou de réparation et d’iconographie, depuis l’époque de leur acquisition par la cour — bien souvent auprès de leur fabricant — jusqu’à nos jours .

‘When He Saw Me Move, He Shot At Me.’
A victim of the Fort Hood shooting speaks about his experience, his fallen friends, and the desire to serve his country in Afghanistan.

Alan Carroll laughed when Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan jumped up from his desk in the Soldier Readiness Center at Fort Hood military base and shouted "Allahu Akbar!" Carroll, a 20-year-old private second class, had been waiting all day to get the remainder of his vaccines and medical exams so that he could deploy to Afghanistan. For the past half hour or so, Major Hasan had paced the floor of the spacious, gymnasiumlike room casting suspicious glances at Carroll and three friends, who were also preparing to deploy. But he figured the major—whom he'd never seen before—was just restless and goofing around. Even when the shooting started , and a bullet pierced the left side of Carroll's chest, the private assumed it was some sort of training exercise, maybe designed to test their response to close-range fire. "My first thought was 'Wow that really hurts for a rubber bullet,' " Carroll says. "But he kept shooting and all of a sudden there was blood flying all over the place."
Carroll, a short, stocky soldier whose physique hints at his days as a high-school wrestler, dove to the ground face down. For the next several minutes he alternated between playing dead and scanning the horrified crowd for his friends. When the gunman wasn't looking, he pulled one comrade—who'd also been shot in the chest—out of a chair to the floor. Across the room, he saw another friend tangled in a bunch of chairs, screaming. With one eye on the gunman, who was still walking the room firing random shots, Carroll crawled to the other private. "Every time the major came in my direction I would stop moving, put my head down and play dead," he said. "And when he saw me move, he shot at me."
By the time he reached the other soldier, Carroll had sustained two additional bullet wounds: one in his left arm, one in his left leg. Still, when the gunman wasn't looking, Carroll scurried to untangle his friend from the mess of chairs. When he accidentally knocked a chair over, he froze. "I knew [the shooter] heard it, and I knew he was coming back to me," he says. "I was trying to pull my buddy out, but my leg wouldn't cooperate anymore." When the gunman fired a fourth shot at Carroll, hitting him in the right shoulder, Carroll fell to the floor. Soon after, Hasan turned his attention elsewhere, walking to the far end of the large room. Stunned and badly wounded, Carroll fled, half running, half stumbling through a nearby door. It would take another hour before medics reached him. Neither of the soldiers he tried to save would make it out alive.
In the days since, the young soldier has struggled to come to terms with the loss, and with his newfound status. "Everyone keeps calling me a hero," he says. "But I don't agree. If I was a hero, my buddies would still be alive." On Saturday, George W. Bush paid Carroll and his fellow soldiers a visit. The former president's first question: where was Carroll wounded? "When I told him, he said 'Wow! That'll show 'em it takes more than a few bullets to put a good soldier down.' "
Carroll had been out of boot camp for just over a year when last week's massacre claimed the lives of 13 soldiers. With multiple generations on both sides of his family having served in the armed forces, Carroll considers the military his family business. He describes the edict of "never leave a fallen comrade behind" as the most sacred of his duties. Friends and family describe Carroll as loyal, dedicated and eager to help others. He joined the National Guard at 17 but quickly decided one weekend a month was not enough. "I wanted to call myself a soldier," he says. "And I figured it was my time to honor the family tradition of military service." So when he turned 18, he joined the Army. Family and friends say it's the only plan he ever really had for his life, and recent events have not changed that.
"He's an unbelievable soldier, and he's in it for the long haul," says his mother, who flew down to Texas from her home in New Jersey immediately after the shooting, along with Carroll's stepfather and younger brother. "I couldn't be more frightened, but I couldn't be more proud."
Carroll was released from the hospital Saturday evening and is staying with his grandmother who lives near Fort Hood. He's received a steady stream of visits and phone calls from other members of his unit. He'll return to work after two weeks rest, and still hopes to be in Afghanistan by January. But while his doctors expect him to make a full recovery, they can't say for certain when he'll be ready for combat. "They won't give me any timeframe," he says. "I've still got a bunch of holes that need to heal up." | Translation - French

Quand le Major Nidal Malik Hasan saute de derrière son bureau et crie "Allah Akbar !", au Centre de Préparation du Soldat de la base militaire de Fort Hood, Alan Carroll rigole. Ce soldat de deuxième classe, vingt ans, attend depuis le début de la journée de pouvoir passer ses ultimes examens médicaux et de recevoir ses derniers vaccins avant d'être déployé en Afghanistan. Le Major Hasan vient de passer la dernière demi-heure à arpenter la pièce, aux dimensions proches d’un gymnase, coulant des regards suspicieux en direction de Carroll et de ses trois amis qui se préparent également à être envoyés en Afghanistan. Carroll se figure que le major — qu’il n’avait jusqu’ici jamais rencontré — ne tient pas en place et fait l’imbécile. Carroll, un soldat plutôt râblé et de petite taille, dont le physique reflète les années de lycées consacrées à la lutte, plonge au sol tête la première. Au cours des minutes suivantes, il alterne entre faire le mort et balayer la foule terrifiée à la recherche de ses amis. Profitant d’un instant où le tireur regarde ailleurs, il tire au sol un de ses camarades, lui aussi blessé à la poitrine, mais resté sur sa chaise. De l’autre côté de la salle, il repère un autre de ses amis coincé au milieu d’un tas de chaises, criant. Un œil rivé sur le tireur, qui continue de parcourir la salle en tirant au hasard, Carroll rampe en direction du soldat. "À chaque fois que le major venait vers moi, je cessais d’avancer, je baissais la tête et je faisais le mort", raconte-t-il. "Mais quand il m’a vu bouger, il m’a tiré dessus".
Avant de pouvoir atteindre l’autre soldat, Carroll s’est fait toucher deux fois : au bras gauche et à la jambe gauche. Néanmoins, pendant que le tireur regarde ailleurs, Carroll essaie de dégager en toute hâte son ami du tas de chaises. Peu après, l’attention d’Hasan étant attirée ailleurs, Carroll s’enfuit, moitié courant, moitié titubant, par une porte située non loin. Il attendra encore une heure l’arrivée des secours. Aucun des soldats qu’il a tenté de sauver ne survivra.
Depuis, le jeune soldat doit s’efforcer d’affronter cette perte, et d’accepter son nouveau statut : "On ne cesse de me dire que je suis un héros", dit-il, "mais je ne suis pas d’accord. Si j’étais un héros, mes copains seraient toujours vivants". Samedi, George W. Bush a rendu visite à Carroll et ses camarades. Première question de l’ancien président : où a été blessé Caroll ? "Quand je lui ai répondu, il a dit 'Wow, ça leur apprendra qu’il faut plus que quelques cartouches pour se débarrasser d’un bon soldat".
Au moment du massacre de la semaine dernière, qui s’est soldé par la mort de 13 soldats, Carroll avait terminé ses classes depuis à peine plus d’un an. Issu des deux côtés de sa famille de plusieurs générations de militaires, il considère l’armée comme l’entreprise familiale. À ses yeux, "on n’abandonne pas un camarade à terre" est le plus sacré des préceptes. Famille et amis décrivent un garçon loyal, dévoué et désireux d’aider les autres, qui s’est engagé dans la garde nationale à 17 ans, avant de décider qu’un week-end par mois n’était pas suffisant. "Je voulais pouvoir me dire soldat", dit-il, "et je pensais que l’heure était venue d’honorer la tradition familiale du service militaire". Alors, dès 18 ans, il s’engage. Famille et amis confirment qu’il s’agit du seul projet qu’il ait jamais envisagé pour son avenir, une chose que les événements récents n’ont pas changé.
"C’est un soldat incroyable, et il s’y voit pour longtemps", raconte sa mère, qui a immédiatement pris l’avion pour le Texas, depuis le New Jersey où elle vit, accompagnée du beau-père de Carroll et de son jeune frère. "Je n’ai jamais eu aussi peur, mais je suis plus fière qu’on puisse l’être".
Carroll est sorti de l’hôpital samedi et réside chez sa grand-mère, à proximité de Ford Hood, où il reçoit un flot continu de coups de fil et de visites d’autres membres de son unité. Il doit retourner au travail après un repos de deux semaines et espère être en Afghanistan avant janvier mais. Cependant, bien que les médecins s’attendent à le voir récupérer en totalité, ils ne peuvent lui indiquer avec certitude quand il sera prêt au combat. "Ils ne veulent pas me donner de date", confirme-t-il, "j’ai encore pas mal de trous qui doivent se refermer".
