I and my agency, Lingua, offer such language services as translating, interpreting, composing, correcting and improving texts. While I translate only from Icelandic to English, along with interpreting between those two languages or German, Lingua collaborates with mother-tongue translators in a number of languages that are common in the Icelandic market, including Icelandic, English, German, Danish, Norwegian, French, Polish, Russian, Dutch, Italian and others. All our translators have experience in writing for publication. If they are not translating into their native language, the text is always edited by a person who is qualified for that. In the most frequent languages, particularly Icelandic, English and German, the company works with several translators specialised in different areas, which also allows for delivering a translation at any time of the year. Often my own job is to check over and edit translations by my colleagues.
Service and pricing
Incoming phone calls are always personally answered on weekdays, 9-12 a.m. and 1-4:30 p.m. Icelandic time (GMT), with the exception of Icelandic holidays. Email is always answered at least once on such workdays, though usually much more frequently. Generally, the company is capable of undertaking weekend or evening work, and short assignments are normally finished by the first to third day after reception. As of September 2008, Lingua rates for most translations and for proofreading and interpreting time are as follows:
31 ISK per word, based on English words
35 ISK per word, based on Icelandic words
7,750 ISK per hour
Note that there may also be value-added tax. Discounts can sometimes be given for a lenient deadline, exceptionally easy material not requiring a polished style, regularly repeated tasks, etc., while minimum fees are charged on very short assignments, and surcharges calculated for example for jobs demanding immediate priority or weekend or evening work, as well as for particularly difficult texts such as lists of unrelated technical terms. The company can usually make firm offers, though never without seeing the text to work on. Please see www.islingua.is for more particulars.
