Source text - English 1. Sector 1: Edku – El Alamein Section 1: Edku – Alexandria This section is located on the Mediterranean coast of the Nile Delta, an eco-region denominated “Deltaic Mediterranean Coast”. The area is included in the coastal belt arid province, characterized by a mild winter and a hot summer. It is under the maritime influence of the Mediterranean Sea, with rainfall of more than 100 mm/year and an attenuated dry period. It comprises a zone of arid land between the Mediterranean Sea to the northwest, intensive coastal development, farmlands and Lake Edku. The Abu Qir area in the eastern part of this sector is less interesting in biodiversity due to the numerous human disturbing and polluting activities that have highly affected the coastal zone. The area also represents a unique meeting point for biological elements from three biogeographical regions: the Mediterranean (extending along the coastal zone), the Saharo-Sindian (relicts isolated in the sand dunes) and the Afro-tropical (extending northwards along the Nile Valley). The most significant habitats in the area are Saharan, represented by isolated relict populations of species cut off from their main range thousands of years ago. 1.1.1 Habitats The area of Alexandria is not of particular interest in terms of biodiversity. The Abu Qir area, in the western part of this sector, is highly disturbed and polluted (Sarwat, 2005), while the rest is fairly disturbed. Fragments of natural habitats still remain along the coast and between the patches of reclaimed land, particularly in the Edku area. The habitats of this landscape are likely to have considerable significance for biodiversity as they represent long isolated relicts of Saharan origin, with several locally divergent elements. The main habitats of this sector, within a buffer of 2km on each side of the road, can be classified as follows: - Beach; - Sabkha; - Salt marsh; - Sand dunes; - Cultivations; and - Towns and villages. A survey of the main terrestrial habitats was conducted by Entec during July 1998, with a dedicated survey of the beach area being conducted by ER Egypt in August 2000 (ERM, 2001). A survey of the Abu Qir area was conducted by Sarwat (2005). 1.1.2 Fauna Amphibians One species of amphibian, namely the Nile Delta Toad (Bufo kassasii) is endemic to the lower Nile Valley and Delta. The species is widespread in the area and has been found at Lake Edku, Rosetta, and numerous rice fields, drains and irrigation canals, and other areas with standing freshwater. Other common species include the Square-marked Toad (Bufo regularis) and the Mascarene Frog (Ptychadena mascareniensis), found in drains and irrigation canals.	Translation - Arabic القطاع 1: إدكو - العالمين القسم 1: إدكو - الإسكندرية يقع هذا القسم على ساحل البحر المتوسط عند منطقة دلتا نهر النيل وهو عبارة عن منطقة إيكولوجية تسمى "ساحل البحر المتوسط الدلتاوي" تقع المنطقة داخل الإقليم الجاف للحزام الساحلي وتتميز بشتاء معتدل وصيف حار. وتقع تحت التأثير البحري للبحر المتوسط مع سقوط أمطار تصل إلى أكثر من 100 مم/عام وفترة جفاف خفيفة. وتتضمن منطقة يابسة جافة بين البحر المتوسط تجاه الشمال الغربي والتنمية الساحلية المكثفة والأراضي الزراعية وبحيرة إدكو.. تعد منطقة أبو قير في الجزء الشرقي من هذا القطاع أقل أهمية من ناحية التنوع الحيوي نتيجة لعديد من أنشطة الإنسان والأنشطة الملوثة التي أثرت على المنطقة الساحلية بشكل كبير. كما تمثل المنطقة نقطة إلتقاء متميزة للعناصر الحيوية من ثلاث مناطق بيولوجية جغرافية: البحر المتوسط (الممتد بطول المنطقة الساحلية) منطقة سنديان الصحراوية "Saharo-Sindian " (بقايا معزولة في الكثبان الرملية) والمنطقة الإستوائية الأفريقية (ممتدة شمالاً بطول وادي النيل). 1.1.1 الموائل تعد منطقة الإسكندرية غير مثيرة للإهتمام فيما يتعلق بالتنوع الحيوي. أما منطقة أبو قير في الجزء الغريب من هذا القطاع فهي تعاني من الخلل والتلوث بنسبة عالية (Sarwat, 2005)، بينما تعاني باقي المناطق من خلل بنسب أقل. ولايزال هناك بقايا من الموائل الطبيعية بطول الساحل وبين قطع الأراضي المستصلحة، خاصة منطقة إدكو. فالموائل في هذه المناظر الطبيعية لها بالأرجح تأثير هام على التنوع الحيوي حيث أنها تمثل مناطق نباتية طويلة معزولة من الصحراء الأصلية مع عديد من العناصر المتنوعة محلياً. يمكن تقسيم الموائل الرئيسية لهذا القطاع داخل حرم بامتداد 2 كم على كل من جانبي الطريق كما يلي: - الشاطئ - السبخات - الأحراش الملحية - الكثبان الرملية - الزراعات - المدن والقرى أجرى مكتب استشارات "Entec" مسحاً على الموائل البرية الأساسية في يوليو 1998 وفي أغسطس 2000 قامت شركة "ER Egypt" بعمل مسح خاص لمنطقة الشاطئ (ERM,2001). وقام Sarwat (2005) بعمل مسح على منطقة أبو قير. 1.1.2 الحيوانات البرمائيات يوجد نوع برمائيات واحد هو ضفدع دلتا النيل (Bufo kassasii) وهو مستوطن في جنوب وادي نهر النيل والدلتا. ينتشر النوع على مدى واسع في المنطقة وعثر عليه في بحيرة أدكو ورشيد والعديد من حقول الأرز والمصبات وقنوات الري ومناطق أخرى تحتوي على مياه عذبة راكدة. كما توجد أنواع شائعة أخرى عند المصبات وقنوات الري مثل الضفدع الطيني (Bufo regularis) والجزاع أبو خطين (Ptychadena mascareniensis).
