L'origine del toponimo è classica: Forum Livii, “Foro di Livio”. Si ignora nondimeno la data di fondazione, che è possibile collocare fra l'inizio del Secondo secolo a.C. e la metà del Primo. La posizione – una sorta di isola lungo la Via Emilia, delimitata dai fiumi Rabbi e Montone – rende Forlì, per secoli, un tranquillo centro di raccolta e smistamento di merci. Il problema delle piene periodiche dei due corsi d'acqua viene risolto solo intorno alla metà del XII secolo.
Fino al principio del XIII secolo, sul territorio forlivese si succedono Goti, Bizantini, Longobardi, Franchi.
Repubblica ghibellina fin dal X secolo, è schierata apertamente contro la Chiesa a favore degli Imperatori del Sacro Romano Impero Germanico. Per tutto il XIII secolo è in conflitto con le città guelfe circonvicine; l'appoggio a Federico II nella presa di Faenza (1241) merita a Forlì l'aquila sveva sullo stemma civico, la facoltà di coniare moneta e l'onore di vestire di porpora i propri senatori. Nel giro di vent'anni le sorti della casa sveva volgono al peggio: il luogotenente imperiale Guido da Montefeltro ripara a Forlì assumendo la carica di Capitano del Popolo e riporta vittorie contro i Bolognesi (1275), contro la coalizione guelfa che vede fra le sue file i Fiorentini (1276) e, infine, contro l'esercito francese inviato dal Papa Martino IV (1282). Dante Alighieri ricorderà l'episodio nella Commedia: "la terra che fe' già la lunga prova e di Franceschi sanguinoso mucchio" (Inferno XXVI, 43-44). L'ira del pontefice si traduce in minacce tali da costringere il Senato Forlivese alla resa; Guido da Montefeltro abbandona la città, brevemente retta da un Legato Pontificio. Alla cacciata di questo, ottengono e mantengono per quasi due secoli il principato gli Ordelaffi. Ne ricordiamo come esponenti illustri: Scarpetta III, che dà asilo all'Alighieri (1303), e Francesco il Grande che tiene testa al Cardinale Albornoz, inviato per tentare di sottoporre un'ennesima volta la Romagna al Papato. Nonostante una valorosa difesa da parte di Francesco e della moglie Marzia degli Ubaldini – quest'ultima a difesa di Cesena –, gli Ordelaffi escono sconfitti dallo scontro (1359). Pino III tiene la Signoria dal 1466 al 1480; sotto la sua egida, la città si abbellisce di edifici e monumenti, si fortifica con il completamento delle mura perimetrali e con importanti lavori alla Rocca di Ravaldino, raggiungendo alfine una notevole prosperità economica. Morto – forse avvelenato – Pino, Forlì passa ancora sotto diversi Ordelaffi prima di essere reclamata dal Papa Sisto IV per un suo congiunto, Gerolamo Riario, marito di Caterina Sforza. Sposa di tre mariti – oltre a Girolamo, anche di Jacopo Feo e Giovanni De' Medici – e madre di una decina di figli, Caterina diventa la dominatrice indiscussa di Forlì. Il suo regno ha effimera durata, e finisce brutalmente travolto dal disegno egemonico di Cesare Borgia e dello Stato della Chiesa (1500). Tramontata la stella del Borgia, esaurito un effimero ritorno degli Ordelaffi (1503-1504), Forlì è incorporata nello Stato Pontificio per volere di Giulio II della Rovere, che tronca ogni pretesa di autonomia. Seguono tre secoli di un silenzio interrotto solo da cruente lotte fratricide e dalla creazione della Magistratura dei Novanta Pacifici, con il compiti di pubblica sicurezza.
Fra la fine del XVII secolo e la prima metà del XVIII, Forlì conosce il genio di Gian Battista Morgagni (1682-1771), l'intensa attività pittorica di Carlo Cignani e della sua scuola ed il restauro, la ristrutturazione e la costruzione di diversi palazzi e chiese ad opera di Giuseppe Merenda (1687-1767).
Il lungo periodo di quiete è interrotto dalla Rivoluzione Francese, che sconvolge l'Europa intera; le truppe giacobine giungono a Forlì nel Giugno del 1796, mentre Napoleone vi fa il suo ingresso trionfale il 4 febbraio 1797. L'adesione alle guerre risorgimentali è generosa; in questo periodo numerose personalità forlivesi emergono nella vita politica e culturale italiana: Piero Maroncelli, compagno di prigionia di Silvio Pellico; Aurelio Saffi, triunviro della Repubblica Romana del '49 e, in seguito, senatore del Regno; Antonio Fratti, garibaldino a Mentana, deputato, caduto a Domokos nel 1897 nella guerra di indipendenza greca. In epoca post-unitaria, nel contesto di un territorio legato prevalentemente all'agricoltura ed alla mezzadria, la partecipazione dei forlivesi alle lotte agrarie degli ultimi anni del XIX secolo e dell'inizio del XX non è meno appassionata. Sull'onda delle modifiche dei patti agrari e della lotta alla disoccupazione bracciantile, si sviluppano i grandi partiti popolari – Repubblicano e Socialista – e le organizzazioni cattoliche di impronta sociale e modernista, da cui derivano le prime società di mutuo soccorso, le leghe sindacali e le prime Camere del Lavoro. Dopo quattro anni di conflitto mondiale, la città viene liberata dal Nazifascismo il 9 novembre 1944. Il passaggio distruttivo della Seconda Guerra Mondiale lascia dietro di sé tante vittime e cumuli di macerie là dove sorgevano alcuni dei tesori monumentali più cari alla storia forlivese: la Torre civica, il Teatro comunale, la Chiesa di San Biagio con gli affreschi di Melozzo degli Ambrogi.

The toponym of the city has classical origins: Forum Livii, that is “Livy’s Forum”. However, its date of foundation is uncertain, possibly settled between the early II and the half of the I century b.C. It is situated on a sort of island along road Emilia, bordered by rivers Rabbi and Montone; this position has made Forlì a commercial centre for the gathering and sorting of goods. The problem represented by the periodic overflows of these two rivers was solved only around the half of the XII century.
Until the beginning of the XIII century, Goths, Bizantines, Lombards and Francs succeeded themselves on the territory of Forlì.
Forlì, a Ghibelline republic from the X century, was overtly against the Church and in favour of the Emperors of the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation. During the whole XIII century, the city was into conflict with the nearby Guelph cities; the city obtained the Swabian eagle on its coat of arms after having supported Frederick II in the conquest of Faenza (1241); moreover, the city was allowed to coin its own money and its senators gained the privilege of wearing purple. In twenty years’ time, the sort of the Swabian dynasty turned badly: the imperial lieutenant Guido da Montefeltro found shelter in Forlì, acquiring the title of Capitano del Popolo and won battles against Bologna (1275), the guelph coalition including Florence (1276) and, finally, the French army, sent by Pope Martin IV (1282). Dante Alighieri mentioned this episode in his Comedy: “The city which once made the long resistance,and of the French a sanguinary heap” (Inferno XXVII, 43-44). The Pope’s wrath gave way to serious menaces, obliging the Senate of Forlì to surrender; Guido da Montefeltro abandoned the city, which was under the rule of a Vatican ambassador for a short period. After the ambassador was driven away, the Ordelaffi family obtained and maintained the princedom for nearly two centuries. Some famous members of this family: Scarpetta III, who hosted Dante Alighieri in 1303, and Francesco il Grande, who coped with Cardinal Albornoz, who was sent in Forlì in order to subdue the region to the Vatican. Despite the courageous defence carried out by Francesco and his wife, Marzia degli Ubaldini, who defended Cesena, the Ordelaffi family was defeated in 1359. Pino III was Lord of the city from 1466 to 1480; under his rule, he embellished the city with building and monuments; in this period, Forlì was also fortified through the completing of perimeter walls and works were carried out on the Fortress of Ravaldino. Moreover, a remarkable economic prosperity was reached. After Pino III’s death - probably by poisoning – Forlì was ruled by various members of the Ordelaffi family, then Pope Sistus IV claimed its rights on the city because of a relative of his, Gerolamo Riario, who had married Caterina Sforza. Caterina, who had been married twice before – to Jacopo di Feo and Giovanni de’ Medici – and had ten sons, unquestionably imposed her rule on Forlì. Her reign was brief, and ended brutally, swept away by an egemonic plot of Cesare Borgia and the Vatican State (1500). After the period under Cesare Borgia, the Ordelaffi family came back to power for a short period (1503-1504); successively, Forlì became part of the Vatican State, according to the will of Giulio II della Rovere, who suppressed every claim of independence. The following three centuries were characterised by cruel internal conflicts and by the institution of the Magistracy of the “Novanta Pacifici”, in charge of public security.
Between the end of the XVII and the first half of the XVIII century, Forlì’s artistic life was dominated by the genius of Gian Battista Morgagni (1682-1771), the intense activity of painter Carlo Cignani and his school, and, finally, the restoration and construction of many palaces and churches, by Giuseppe Merenda (1687-1767).
This long period of peace was interrupted by the French Revolution, upsetting all Europe; the Jacobin troops arrived in Forlì on June 1796, while Napoleon made his triumphal entrance on the 4th of February, 1797. The participation to the Risorgimento wars was massive; in this period, many notables from Forlì emerged in the political and cultural life of Italy: Piero Maroncelli, who was imprisoned together with Silvio Pellico; Aurelio Saffi, triumvir of the 1949 Roman Republic and, afterwards, senator of the Reign; Antonio Fratti, who followed Garibaldi in Mentana, was a deputy and died in Domokos in 1897, during the independence war in Greece. In the post-unification period, even if the territory of Forlì mainly depended on agriculture and sharecropping, the citizens’ participation to the agrarian struggles taking place between the end of the XIX and the early XX century was still passionate. The great popular parties –the Republican and Socialist ones - developed thanks to the re-elaboration of agrarian pacts and the struggle against unemployment in agriculture, together with the Catholic organisations, social and modernist-oriented; the first mutual aid, labour unions and Labour Chambers derived from these organisations. After World War II, the city was freed from Nazism and Fascism on the 9th of November, 1944. The conflict caused many casualties and serious damage to the city: the Civic Tower, the Communal Theatre and the Church of St. Biagio, embellished by Melozzo degli Ambrogi’s beautiful frescoes were reduced to heaps of rubble.

NEL TERRITORIO DI FORLI’-CESENA
Alla scoperta de prodotti tipici all’ombra della Rocca di Forlimpopoli
FORLIMPOPOLI.- Oggigiorno siamo sempre più affacciati su un ideale di globalizzazione portato ai massimi livelli e su tutti i settori, compreso naturalmente quello agro-alimentare e merceologico. Basti pensare alla diffusione dei prodotti semilavorati, ai sughi già pronti, o alla diffusione della neo ristorazione, con capogruppo la catena americana Mc Donalds, che ha come conseguenza l’appiattimento dei gusti personali, una standardizzazione dei sapori e, per ultimo, l’abbandono della stagionalità degli alimenti. Certo, poter reperire i prodotti alimentari durante tutto l’anno, poiché provenienti da tutto il globo, è un vantaggio, soprattutto per la ristorazione, senza contare il fascino che alcuni prodotti esotici o pregiati esercitano sulla psiche umana (prodotto raro o innovativo = essere alla moda, superare gli altri), anche a scapito di un prezzo elevato.
Ma così facendo andiamo automaticamente ad escludere gli alimenti per così dire “comuni” di cui disponiamo in abbondanza, che troviamo sul mercato ad un prezzo molto più ragionevole e soprattutto bilanciati nutrizionalmente, in quanto la natura predispone i prodotti ortofrutticoli in base al territorio in cui nascono ed al periodo di raccolta ( ad esempio,un’anguria nel mese di dicembre sarebbe assolutamente inutile, in quanto ricca d’acqua in un periodo dell’anno in cui servono calorie, così come le castagne nel mese di agosto sono fuori tempo in quanto apportano energia in un periodo in cui c’è bisogno di freschezza.)
Proprio nei prodotti tipici, quindi, ma soprattutto nelle certificazioni DOP (Denominazione di Origine Protetta) e IGP (Indicazione Geografica Protetta) invece, sta la capacità di un Paese come l’Italia di valorizzarsi e di competere con altri mercati europei e mondiali, dando sempre più significato al concetto di “libero mercato”, con la garanzia per il cliente, però, della sicurezza della provenienza del prodotto. Suddette certificazioni, infatti, hanno lo scopo di disciplinare (e da qui deriva il termine volto a definire l’insieme di regole da seguire) tutte le fasi di produzione, prodotto per prodotto, garantendolo in relazione con il territorio e con le fasi della produzione stessa (DOP) oppure solamente in una delle sue fasi principali svolta all’interno del territorio di appartenenza (IGP).
L’ Emilia-Romagna, risulta addirittura al primo posto della classifica delle regioni con più certificazioni, seconda la Lombardia, grazie alla gamma di salumi e insaccati, aceti balsamici, ortaggi e formaggi che presenta al suo interno, anche se, in effetti, la maggior parte delle DOP si fermano al di là del Reno, in Emilia, tra cui il Culatello di Zibello, il Prosciutto di Parma, l’Aceto Balsamico Tradizionale di Modena, la Coppa Piacentina, ect.. restano comunque da ricordare tra gli olii l’olio Brisighello DOP e il Colline di Romagna DOP. Identificare quindi un prodotto come tipico e certificato della nostra provincia di Forlì-Cesena risulta senz’altro un compito assai gravoso e complesso. Con il clima di montagna dell’Appennino, fino al clima più mite costiero passando attraverso la lingua più meridionale della Pianura Padana con il clima prettamente continentale, il risultato che viene a crearsi è una molteplicità di prodotti con caratteristiche simili, a volte, ma nel contempo diverse.
Un’ulteriore influenza s può rilevare attraverso le tradizioni locali delle zone di confine: Sogliano al Rubicone, al confine con i nostri cugini riminesi, Mercato Saraceno e Sarsina, al confine con il Montefeltro (Marche), il parco delle Foreste Casentinesi sul confine con la Toscana sono solo alcuni esempi di come alcune influenze esterne toccano le nostre tradizioni enogastronomiche. Un esempio su tutti può essere il formaggio di fossa prodotto a Sogliano con il suo “clone” toscano, il formaggio di grotta.
La piadina è un ulteriore prodotto tipico che cambia, e questa volta non per modo di dire, da città a città: partendo da quella più sottile in assoluto fatta a Riccione, fino a quella che tutti conosciamo, spessa intorno ai 4-5 mm, fatta proprio nel forlivese. Non a caso, nell’ultimo anno, a proposito di una possibile certificazione, si è spesso discusso su quale tra le varie ricette meriterebbe di fregiarsi, in fututo, del titolo di “Piadina di Romagna” IGP.
Un altro prodotto importante nella nostra agricoltura, anche se non propriamente nostro, è il kiwi, frutto tipico della Nuova Zelanda, praticamente ai nostri antipodi, che detiene ancora il primato mondiale della produzione, seguito però dall’Italia, ed in particolare dalla Romagna. Tipico caso di impianto colturale riuscito alla perfezione. Ma tra tutti i prodotti IGP si evidenzia per la speciale diffusione nella provincia forlivese-cesenate della Pesca Nettarina di Romagna IGP.
Conosciuta come coltura dal XIV secolo partendo proprio dalla pianura romagnola, che ancora oggi detiene uno dei più alti livelli di produttività, tanto da essere l’unica IGP italiana nel gruppo delle pesche. Un prodotto da consumarsi prevalentemente in estate, grazie alla presenza di acqua e alla mancanza di grassi, dissetando senza appesantire stomaco e fegato e con grandi quantità di vitamina C e di potassio, senza dimenticarci del betacarotene, precursore della vitamina A, agenti importanti per la lotta contro i radicali liberi e contro le sostanze cancerogene.
Situata tra Bologna, Forlì-Cesena, Ravenna, Ferrara e Rimini, trova nella nostra provincia l’epicentro ideale della sua zona di produzione. Altro aggancio con la nostra provincia, e precisamente con la cittadina di Forlimpopoli, è la presenza nel libro dell’Artusi “La scienza in cucina e l’arte di mangiar bene” di una ricetta riguardante le pesche.

IN THE TERRITORY OF FORLÌ - CESENA
The discovery of typical products in the shade of the Fortress of Forlimpopoli
FORLIMPOPOLI.- Today, we are more and more into an idea of globalization at its maximum levels and covering all fields, obviously including the agroindustrial and commercial ones. It only takes to think about the spreading of half processed products, ready-made sauces or of the new restauration, led by American Mc Donald’s chain. These elements result in the homologation of individual tastes, the standardisation of flavours and, finally, the abandoning of the seasonality of products. Thanks to globalization, it is possible to find a product in every moment of the year, which is an advantage for restaurants above all. Moreover, certain exotic or rare foodstuffs have a particular charm (using a rare or innovative product means being trendy, surpass the others), despite their elevate price.
However, in this way, the so-called “common” foodstuffs, available in large amounts, are automatically excluded, even if they have a more reasonable price. Moreover, these products are nutritionally well-balanced: in fact, fruit and vegetables naturally grow in a particular area and season (for instance, a watermelon in December is totally useless, since it contains a huge quantity of water and calories are needed in winter; likewise, chestnuts in August are useless because they are an energetic product and fresh products are needed in summer.)
As a consequence, typical products and DOP (Denomination of Protected Origin) and IGP (Protected Geographic Denomination) products represent the ability of a country – Italy, in this case – of making the most of itself and competing with other markets both in Europe and worldwide, giving more and more significance to the concept of “free market”, still keeping the guarantee of the products’ safe origin. In fact, these certifications have the purpose of regulating every production phase, for every single product, ensuring it with reference to the territory and the production phases (DOP) or only in one of their production phases, taking place in the product’s territory of origin (IGP).
Emilia Romagna is the Italian region having the largest number of DOP and IGP certifications, immediately followed by Lombardy. The region owes this first place to its wide range of cold cuts and sausages, aromatic vinegars, vegetables and cheeses, though the majority of DOP products come from Emilia, on one side of the Reno river. Among them: Zibello “Culatello”, Parma Ham, Modena Traditional Aromatic Vinegar, Piacenza “Coppa”” etc. Among the oils, the DOP Brisighello and the DOP Colline di Romagna oils are surely worth mentioning. Obviously, it is a complex, hard task to identify and certify a typical product in the province of Forlì-Cesena. Many types of climate coexist here: mountain climate on the Apennine, a milder climate on the seacoast, continental climate in the Pianura Padana area. As a consequence, there is a variety of products which are sometimes very similar, but slightly different at the same time.
Local traditions of borderlands are another element influencing the products’ characteristics: Sogliano al Rubicone, at the border with Rimini, Mercato Saraceno and Sarsina, at the border with Montefeltro (Marche), the Foreste Casentinesi Park on the border with Toscana are only a few examples of the way external influences touch our oenogastronomic traditions. The main example could be pit cheese, produced in Sogliano, and its Tuscan “clone”, cave cheese.
Piadina is another typical product changing from city to city, and this is not only a way of saying.
The thinner version is a typical product from Riccione, while the piadina we all know, about 4-5 mm thick, is made in Forlì. Which one of the two piadina versions deserves the “Piadina di Romagna” IGP certification best? It is not a chance that, during last year, this matter has been greatly discussed.
Another important product of our agriculture, even if it is not really from Romagna, is kiwi, a typical fruit from New Zealand, geographically at our antipodes. New Zealand still detains the world primacy for kiwi production; however, it is followed by Italy, and especially by Romagna. This is a typical case of successful planting of a product from one country to another. However, among all the IGP products, the most widespread in the province of Cesena-Forlì is definitely the “Pesca Nettarina di Romagna IGP” (nectarine peach).
The nectarine peach was already known in Romagna’s plain during the XIV century; today, it still detains one of the highest production levels, so much so that this is the only IGP-certified type of peach. This fruit is to be eaten prevalently in summer, since it contains a great quantity of water and is fat-free; as a consequence, it is thirst-quenching and doesn’t lay heavily on stomach and liver. Moreover, it contains huge quantities of vitamin C and potassium, but also betacarotene, which can be converted into vitamin A: these elements are important to limit the onset of free radicals and carcinogenic substances.
The ideal epicentre of nectarine peaches production area is our province, situated among Bologna, Forlì-Cesena, Ravenna, Ferrara and Rimini. Nectarine peaches are also related to Forlì-Cesena – in particular to the town of Forlimpopoli – because the book “La scienza in cucina e l’arte di mangiar bene” (The science of cookery and the art of eating well) by Artusi includes a recipe where they are employed.

Nelle immediate vicinanze della città, ai piedi delle colline di Calisese, si trova la Valle dei Conti. L’azienda agricola è nata nel 1962 con l’arrivo della Famiglia Drudi, ma l’agriturismo prende vita nel 2004, quando Silvano con Alba ed Elio decidono di realizzare un vecchio sogno. I fratelli Drudi hanno ereditato dal padre l’amore per la campagna, e tutti i componenti della famiglia hanno collaborato per realizzare il tutto. Oggi l’Agriturismo vanta un notevole successo dovuto alla molteplicità delle proposte e alla buona cucina. La struttura è composta dall’edificio principale e da due villette laterali ristrutturate. Sono presenti anche antiche fosse risalenti al ’700, che servivano come deposito del grano e dove venivano stagionati i formaggi. Nel laghetto si pratica la pesca sportiva: si trovano carpe da 3 a 13 kg da pescare e poi liberare. Il Museo dell’Antica Civiltà Contadina ricopre una superficie di 200 mq e raccoglie numerosi oggetti che rappresentano il lavoro antico della campagna: carri da trasporto per vari usi, oggetti per la casa, tini e accessori per la vendemmia, utensili per il lavoro nei campi. Chi desidera soggiornare può scegliere fra 10 camere arredate in modo diverso (arredi in arte povera con letti in ferro) e dotate di ogni comfort: aria condizionata, TV, telefono e bagno riservato. In attivazione anche il servizio Internet in ogni camera. La cucina tipica romagnola è un punto di forza dell’azienda, con i suoi piatti fatti in casa, pane compreso. Il giovedì e il venerdì, si trova il menù tradizionale “E Magnè d’una Volta”, che riporta in tavola i piatti della cucina povera, come maltagliati con i fagioli, trippa in umido con polenta alla brace, patate in camicia e dolci, come il “latteruolo” o la ciambella con Albana. I vini sono scelti dalle aziende locali, che offrono una buona qualità di Sangiovese Superiore o DOC, Trebbiano, Pagadebit e Albana dolce o Passita da servire con i dolci.
Un ampio parco giochi consente ai bambini di correre liberamente e ai genitori di rilassarsi in mezzo al verde, prendendo anche il sole su comodi lettini di fianco al laghetto. I bambini possono anche ammirare gli animali da cortile, come oche, galline, gallo romagnolo, conigli e caprette, che si trovano in un recinto di fianco al Museo. Un luogo ideale per trascorrere un fine settimana all’insegna del relax, della buona cucina e del divertimento, immersi nel verde, a poca distanza dalla città e dal mare.

La Valle dei Conti is in the city’s nearest surroundings, at the foot of Calisese’s hills. Today, La Valle dei Conti boasts a great success, due to the variety of initiatives and to good cooking. The structure is composed by a main building and two restored small cottages. There are also ancient pits dating back to the XVIII century, employed for wheat storage and cheese seasoning. In the small lake, there are carps weighing from 3 to 13 kg, which can be fished and then freed again. The Museum of Ancient Rural Civilisation displays, on a surface of 200 square metres, many objects representing ancient life and work in the country: carts, household objects, vats and tools employed for grape harvest and for the work in the fields. 10 rooms providing every comfort (air conditioning, TV, phone, toilet) are available for guests; all are furnished differently, with iron-wrought beds and “arte povera” furniture. Internet connection will be soon available. Regional cooking is one of the farmhouse’s tenets: all is home made, even bread. On Thursday and Friday, the traditional menu “E Magnè d’una Volta” is on offer, with simple country recipes such as: maltagliati with beans, stewed tripe with barbecued polenta, and poached potatoes. Sweets include the typical “latteruolo” and ring-shaped cake with Albana wine. Wines are bought from local wine makers, offering a good quality of Sangiovese, Superior or DOC, Trebiano, Pagadebit and Albana (also in the “passito” version, to be served with sweets).
A huge park with outdoor games allows children to play, while parents can relax and sunbathe comfortably on the deckchairs near the lake. Children can also see farm animals (geese, hens, cocks, rabbits and kids) kept in an enclosure beside the Museum:. La Valle dei Conti is the ideal place to spend a relaxing and amusing weekend, enjoying the excellent cooking and in close contact with nature, near the city and the seaside.
