Раздвоение происходило не сразу, а незаметно, постепенно, – так незаметно в марте тает снег или изнутри долго сгнивает ствол многолетнего дерева. Правда, первое подозрение сумасшествия закралось сразу по приезде в Нью-Йорк... или нет, еще раньше, задолго до приезда – в последние дни, когда Якоб бродил по городу, по его заснеженным улицам, и силуэты прохожих в серых пальто и черных меховых шубах казались тенями, неприкаянно снующими в царстве мертвых. Вернее, тенью был он, а все вокруг – город, знакомые с детства переулки, стволы каштанов, изогнутые фонари, мемориальные доски, где с фуражек вождей и писателей свисали в ряд тонкие прозрачные сосульки, как гребешки с поломанными зубьями, даже звезды над головой, – все вдруг стало вывернутым наизнанку, очутилось по ту сторону зеркального мира, где жили все люди, все, кроме Якоба. Его ждал отъезд.
Тогда он впервые ощутил странное состояние, когда все как бы проходили сквозь него, смотрели сквозь него, разговаривали не с ним, будто в один миг сговорились, условились, что его больше не существует. А его душа, словно отлетевшая, точнее, после бесконечных экспериментов воображения давно перелетевшая океан, уже нетерпеливо ждала на другом берегу того, кто звался Якобом, но им уже не был. И только авиаперелет, который дался относительно легко, так и остался в памяти последним реальным эпизодом: Якоб ощущал в себе жизнь каждой клеточкой, чувствовал прилив сил в руках, во всем теле, старался улыбаться и забыть про страх.
Спустя годы, сидя в кресле, уставившись в оконное стекло, в котором отражались его облысевшая голова, напоминающая хорошее страусиное яйцо; открытые дверцы кухонного шкафчика, где между стаканов и тарелок, словно биржевые брокеры, пробегали тараканы; угол плиты со свистящим на ней чайником, Якоб отчетливо представлял тот перелет. Яркая вспышка озаряла сознание, он делал отчаянную попытку ухватиться, вернуться к себе, но вдруг все гасло, нога словно соскальзывала в пропасть, в оконном стекле ломались линии предметов, все искажалось, удваивалось – и перевернутый мир снова вступал в свои права.

Такое состояние раздвоенности, однако, необходимо для занятий литературной деятельностью. Якоб, писатель средней руки, покинул Россию потому, что все, что мог и хотел написать о своей российской жизни, уже написал.
...Он шел по Эммонс-авеню. С одной стороны возвышался собор Святого Марка с высокой колокольней, с другой – тянулся ряд бакалейных лавок и здание банка. На асфальте валялись объедки, обрывки газет, рекламные флайерсы и прочий мусор, которого всегда в избытке на торговых улицах. Якоб возвращался откуда-то, как обычно погруженный в себя, но в то же время с писательским любопытством изучал все вокруг: сосредоточенные лица людей у банковских автоматов, выложенных на лотках рыб, даже мокрый кленовый листик, прилипший к шине «Шевроле», где сидела девушка в вызывающе открытой кофточке, лица ее он не разглядел.
Он вдруг замер, замер внутренне, внешне же продолжал идти, глядя перед собой остекленевшими вмиг глазами. На соборной колокольне ударил колокол. Густой могучий гул «бам-м-бам-м-м» поплыв в сентябрьском воздухе, пытаясь заглушить рев машин, хлопанье дверей, стук колес поезда на эстакаде и голоса прохожих. Якоб замер вторично и тут же едва не упал, задетый крепким, бандитского вида, мужчиной в кожаной куртке.
Translation - English The split did not happen right away. It occurred in an unnoticeable fashion, gradually, like snow melts in March or the trunk of a longstanding tree slowly rots from the inside. In truth, the first hint of insanity crept up immediately after the arrival to New York. No, it was even earlier—long before the arrival, during the last few days, when Jacob roamed the snowy streets of the city, and the silhouettes of the passersby in gray cloaks and black fur coats seemed like shadows, restlessly scurrying about in a land of the dead. To be more precise, he was the shadow, while everything around him (the city; the alleyways he knew since childhood; the trunks of the chestnut trees; the curved street lights; the commemorative plaques, where from the caps of great leaders and writers hung rows of thin, transparent icicles, resembling combs with broken teeth; and even the stars up above)—everything was twisted inside out. Everything was suddenly on the other side of a mirror-like world, where all people, everyone except Jacob, lived. Meanwhile, Jacob was about to depart.
For the first time, he experienced a strange state, in which everyone seemed to pass right through him, to look through him, to speak to someone other than him, as if they instantly decided, agreed that he no longer existed. Meanwhile, it was as though his soul flew up, or rather flew across the ocean after infinite experiments of the imagination, and was impatiently waiting at the farther shore for the one who was called Jacob but no longer was him. And only the flight, which passed with considerable ease, remained in his memory as the last real episode. It was then that Jacob felt life with every cell of his body. He felt the flow of energy in his arms and his whole body. He tried to smile and to forget about fear.
Several years since, sitting in a chair and staring into the window pane, reflecting the toll taken on his bald head, which now resembled a nice ostrich egg; open doors of the kitchen cabinets, where amid the glasses and plates, cockroaches ran around like stockbrokers; and the edge of the stove with a shiny tea kettle, Jacob distinctly remembered that flight. A bright flash enlightened his consciousness, and he made a desperate attempt to hold on, to return to himself, but everything suddenly faded, his foot seemed to slip into an abyss, the lines of objects in the window pane broke, everything became distorted and doubled, and the inverted world regained its authority.

This state of duality, however, is imperative for engaging in literary work. Jacob, a run-of-the-mill writer, abandoned Russia because everything he could and wanted to write about his Russian life, he already had.
…He was walking along Emmons avenue. On one side, extended the Church of St. Mark with its tall bell tower; on the other was a line of grocery shops and a bank. The pavement was covered by food leftovers, snippets of newspapers, promotional fliers, and other garbage, which is always in excess in such shopping strips. Jacob was returning from somewhere, absorbed in himself as usual, but at the same time, studying his surroundings with a writer’s curiosity. He took notice of the concentrated faces of the people by the ATM’s, the fish laid out on the boats, and even the wet maple leaf, glued to the tire of a Chevy, where a girl whose face he could not make out was sitting in a provokingly-open shirt.
Suddenly he froze—froze on the inside but on the outside continued to walk, staring ahead with a suddenly blank expression. The bell-toll sounded from the bell tower. It was a thick, powerful clash—“Bam-m-bam-m-m”—that reverberated through the September air in an attempt to drown the howls of cars, the slams of doors, the wobbling sound of the train on the platform, and the voices of the passersby. Jacob froze for the second time and almost fell over from being jostled by a husky man in a leather jacket, having the appearance of a criminal.
