Nous avons observé une interaction statistiquement significative entre le statut tabagique et l'apport en beta-carotène (p = 0,017). Les résultats des modèles stratifiés sur le statut tabagique sont présentés dans la Figure 1. Nous n'avons pas mis en évidence d'hétérogénéité significative entre les fumeuses et les ex-fumeuses. Le risque absolu de cancer sur 10 ans pour 10 000 femmes non fumeuses était de 181,8 cas pour un apport faible de beta-carotène et 81,7 cas pour un apport élevé; pour 10000 femmes fumeuses, il était de 174,0 cas pour un apport faible de beta-carotène et 368,3 cas pour un apport élevé.

A statistically significant relationship between beta-carotene intake and smoking status was seen (p = 0.017). The results of stratified analysis models of smoking are seen in Figure 1. The risk of cancer decreases with increased beta-carotene intake in women who never smoked.
Multivariable relative risks of all smoking-related cancers were 0.72 (95% CI = 0.57 to 0.92) for the second tertile and 0.44 (95% CI = 0.64 to 1.01) for the third tertile, and 0.44 (95% CI = 0.18 to 1.07) for the high intake of beta-carotene tertile, as compared to the first tertile of dietary intake, with P (trend) = 0.03.
This contrasts with the findings in women smokers in whom the consumption of beta-carotene increased the cancer risk. The comparable relative risks were 1.43 (95% CI 1.05-1.96), 1.20 (95% CI 0.86- 1.67) and 2.14 (95% CI 1.16-3.97), with P (trend) = 0.03.
No significant differences were found between smokers and former smokers. The absolute rates over 10 years in those with low and high beta-carotene intake were 181.8 and 81.7 cases, respectively, per 10,000 women in non-smokers who never smoked and 174.0 and 368.3 cases, respectively, per 10,000 women in women who had ever smoked.
This contrary effect of beta-carotene in smokers and non-smokers was specific to tobacco-linked cancers and was not found in cancers that are not linked to tobacco such as breast cancer and other cancers.

Limites de séjour
