1976, a mild summer evening in Montreal. Just as the ASICS Olympic team is getting ready to finalise its work, the starting signal for the 5,000 metres is a few hours away. For those experts, there is no time to celebrate Lasse Viren defending his Gold for the 10,000 metres; they have work to do. While analysing precisely how Viren’s feet hit the ground, they realise the soles of his running shoes might be too thick for the next challenge. The pressure is on to perfect Lasse’s shoes before the 5,000-metre race – especially as Lasse Viren is eager to defend his second title from Munich 1972. So, while Viren recovers, the ASICS specialists shave the soles very carefully, reducing the thickness by exactly 2mm – in time for the 5,000-metre race. And again, it is Lasse Viren who crosses the finishing line first, becoming the only runner to win both competitions at two successive Olympic Games. In the moment he holds up his shoes on his glorious victory lap, every single member of the ASICS Olympic team feels proud to have contributed towards this magnificent victory. The dialogue we maintain with men and women in the field of sports is a vital part of the ASICS approach. The insights we gain thereby help us to advance the technologies we develop, because shoes and apparel that are comfortable and enhance performance form an integral part of our holistic design philosophy.
