Het klimaat is snel aan het veranderen. De maatschappelijke gevolgen voor Nederland kunnen ingrijpend zijn, evenals de gevolgen voor natuur en landschap. De precieze impact voor samenleving, natuur en landschap is nog onbekend, maar de eerste tekenen geven al wel aan hoe kwetsbaar Nederland is voor watertekort, wateroverlast en zeespiegelrijzing. Om een sterke klimaatverandering te voorkomen, is een forse reductie van de uitstoot van broeikasgassen nodig.
Ondanks preventieve maatregelen zal het versterkte broeikaseffect op korte termijn ingrijpende keuzes gaan afdwingen, niet alleen in Nederland maar wereldwijd. Berggebieden, mediterrane gebieden, koraalriffen en alle laaggelegen (kust-)gebieden zijn daarbij door het IPCC als meest kwetsbaar aangeduid. Overal in Nederland, langs de kust, langs de rivieren, in het laagveengebied en op de hoge gronden moeten adaptatiemaatregelen genomen worden. Adaptatie is in onze ogen onontkoombaar om Nederland weerbaar te maken tegen de gevolgen van klimaatverandering. Duidelijk is dat er -aanvullend op tal van technische oplossingen- gezocht moet worden naar ruimtelijke maatregelen. Behalve dat ze duurzamer zijn hebben zij als extra voordeel dat ze de kwaliteit van natuur, landschap en onze woon- en werkomgeving ten goede komen. Zo wordt het versterkte broeikaseffect een aanleiding om oplossingen met meerwaarde te zoeken.

Climate is changing fast. The social consequences to the Netherlands can be far-reaching, just like the consequences to nature and landscape. The exact impact on society, nature and landscape is still unknown, but the first signs already show how vulnerable the Netherlands are to droughts, flooding and sea level rise. To prevent a strong climate change from happening, a large reduction of the emission of greenhouse gasses is necessary.
Despite preventive measures the increased greenhouse effect will make it necessary to make radical choices in the short term, not only in the Netherlands, but throughout the world. Therefore, mountainous areas, Mediterranean areas, coral reefs and low-lying (coastal) areas have been indicated as most vulnerable areas by the IPCC . Throughout the Netherlands, adaptation measures have to be taken, along the coast, along rivers, in marsh areas and on the higher grounds. Adaptation is inevitable in our opinion to prepare the Netherlands for the fight against consequences of climate change. It is clear that in addition to a lot of technical solutions, SPATIAL MEASURES will have to be considered. Apart from being longer lasting, there is the added advantage that they positively influence the quality of nature, landscape and our living and working environment. In this way the increased greenhouse effect becomes a reason for looking for solutions with an added value.

Internationale gevolgen klimaatverandering
De internationale gevolgen van klimaatverandering zijn zeer divers. Op het gebied van emissiereductie wordt getracht een mondiale strategie overeen te komen. Maar voor adaptatiemaatregelen is een mondiale strategie lastiger. Wel worden vanuit de UN en GEF fondsen beschikbaar gesteld om ontwikkelingslanden weerbaarder te maken. Ook de HIER! - campagne richt zich in een aantal ontwikkelingslanden op het versterken van de weerbaarheid tegen klimaatverandering.
Over de (ruimtelijke) gevolgen van klimaatverandering voor landen en ecosystemen is veel, maar nog lang niet alles bekend. Een greep uit de effecten van klimaatverandering over onze grenzen: stijgende sneeuwgrens in Noordwest Europa en de Alpen (met onder andere ernstige consequenties voor het skitoerisme en dieren en planten op de sneeuwgrens), afname aan oppervlakte van toendra’s en ontdooien permafrost, droogte en hitte (met ernstige consequenties voor bosbranden, landbouw en toerisme en biodiversiteit in bijvoorbeeld het Middellandse zeegebied), toenemende kans op plagen en ziekten, toenemende verwoestijning, bedreiging van lage eilanden en delta’s wereldwijd door zeespiegelstijging. Er treden belangrijke mondiale veranderingen op, zoals afsmeltende gletsjers en ijskappen, mogelijke veranderende golfstromen in oceanen en veranderingen in luchtcirculaties (zoals bijvoorbeeld El Ñino), verschuiving van soorten en ecosystemen, veranderingen in stroomgebieden van rivieren en estuaria, verdwijnende koraalriffen en mangrovebossen, veranderingen in trekroutes en vermindering van biodiversiteit.

International consequences of climate change
The international consequences of climate change are extremely divers. In the field of emission reduction efforts are made to come to a global strategy. But for adaptation measures, a global strategy is more complicated. UN and GEF funds are provided to make developing countries more able-bodied. The HIER! - campaign is also aimed at making developing countries less vulnerable to climate change.
Much is known about the (spatial) consequences of climate change for countries and ecosystems, but not all. Here is a selection from the effects of climate change across our borders: rising snow lines in Northwest Europe and the Alps (with, among others, serious consequences for skiing related tourism and animals and plants at the snow line), reduction of the area of tundras and thawing of permafrost, droughts and heat (with serious consequences to forest fires, agriculture and tourism and biodiversity in, for example, the Mediterranean), an increasing risks of plagues and illnesses, increasing desertification, danger to low lying islands and deltas worldwide as a result of sea level rise. Important global changes will occur, like melting glaciers and ice caps, possible changing gulf streams in the oceans and changes in air circulations (like El Niño for example), shift of species and ecosystems, changes in basins of rivers and estuaries, disappearing coral reefs and mangrove forests, changes in migration routes en a decrease in biodiversity.
